Since Roe was overturned, the stories of those who've had abortion have become a central part of our national conversation. In part, that's due to the work of many activists in the reproductive rights and justice movement, like Renee Bracey Sherman, reproductive justice activist, abortion storyteller, and writer. She is the founder and executive director of We Testify, an organization dedicated to the leadership and representation of people who have abortions and share their stories at the intersection of race, class, and gender identity. Her path as a bi-racial Black woman to do the work that unabashedly centered abortion rights as a human right and communities that disproportionately seek abortion care (people of color) was not easy. Renee and I do a deep dive on her personal and professional journey as an activist and advocate. She also shares her thoughts on everything from the current moment we're in politically on abortion rights, why she has always chosen to be uncompromising in her fight for abortion access, the payoff from committing to finding your own path, some great tidbits from her recently released first book Liberating Abortion and more! This week is the one-year anniversary of the Dobbs decision, when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. Politicians think reproductive freedom isn't that big of a deal – “just a bunch of women, talking about their Dobbs again!” – but the truth is that women haven't forgotten. We're continuing to talk about it and share our personal stories, because those stories are how we connect with each other. We're “heart-wired” to respond to them. We're joined by Jen Perez, Red Wine & Blue's program director in Ohio. Jen tells her personal story about why she left her high-powered corporate job to get involved in politics, and the personal reasons that Dobbs motivated her to step up. Jen also shares some updates about the ballot measure to protect reproductive freedom in Ohio and how women across her state have been banding together to fight for their rights. After that, Amanda sits down with Renee Bracey Sherman, the founder of We Testify, an organization dedicated to uplifting and telling the stories of people who have abortions. Renee discusses what it's been like to lead an abortion storytelling organization in the wake of Dobbs and how she founded We Testify to make sure that people who have abortions don't just have a seat at the table but a seat at every table. Finally, Amanda, Rachel and Jasmine raise a glass to congressional aides, letters from camp, and celebrating half-birthdays in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”If you love this podcast and you want to help us bring more listeners into our community, we would love it if you could go into your podcast app and leave us a rating and review. June 24th, 2023 marked one-year since the overturning of Roe v. Wade via the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization Supreme Court case. Between July and December 2022, an estimated 66,000 people have not been able to access abortion care in their home state. Becca Andrews, reporter at Reckon News and author of No Choice: The Destruction of Roe v. Wade and the Fight to Protect a Fundamental American Right, talks to us about the myriad of ways in which the abortion landscape has changed in the past year, including the ways anti-abortion ideology has led to a chipping away at democracy.  The lives of providers, clinic staff, patients, abortion storytellers, abortion fund workers, reproductive health, rights, and justice advocates and reporters have changed dramatically in the past year. In abortion hostile states, many providers and clinic staff have been prevented from providing care or are hesitant to provide care due to vague legal limits. Reporters like Becca, who follow stories on abortion access and care, are being silenced algorithmically on social media. Abortion fund workers scramble, against extreme time frames and travel requirements, to put together funding for procedures and transportation. The denial of human rights is leading to a steady building of authoritarianism. States are telling patients and doctors what care they can access or provide, newsrooms (particularly those that are local and state-based) are shrinking, and mis-and disinformation is rapidly spreading (Reminder: the disinformation that informs anti-abortion sentiment also informs the anti-LGBTQI+, anti-democracy, and anti-science sentiment). Without access to information and up-to-date news or social media, people do not have immediate interaction with necessary knowledge and the national conversation is stifled more broadly. This prevents them from fully realizing their human right to sexual and reproductive health care.      Take Action Follow Becca Andrews on Twitter, find her pieces on Reckon News, and check out her book. Set up reoccurring donations to BIPOC- and low-income and queer-led abortion funds. These grassroots organizations are providing safe, dependable mutual aid for those who are particularly in need. Support organizations like We Testify, who are erasing abortion stigma one story at a time. As appropriations season ramps up, tell your Congress members that reproductive health and rights is funded—that UNFPA, Title X, international family planning is funded, and the Helms amendment and Hyde amendment is repealed. Democrat Pro-Abortion Witness Suggests Black People Better Off Aborted Than Being Born

Another pro-abortion activist called to ‘testify' by Democrats in the House suggested Tuesday that it is better for minorities in America to be aborted than to be born and that she ‘owes her life' to an abortion. The House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations panel heard from Renee Bracey Sherman, the founder and executive director of abortion ‘storytelling group' We Testify. As such, GOP representatives were faced with another child like person up on the stand, speaking in a cringe inducing passive aggressive tone and clearly unable to control her emotions. Bracey Sherman had even used a sharpie to scrawl the pronouns “SHE/HER” on the name plate provided to her by the house. She told the panel that when she was 19 years old and pregnant she considered throwing herself down the stairs and drank “an unsafe amount of alcohol,” in the hope off achieving a miscarriage, which she admitted she counts as a “successful abortion”. “That was when it [abortion] was legal in every state. Now, it is not [not true] and I know some will try the methods that I did,” she asserted. “And I want them to know that there are safe methods to self-managing their abortions according to the World Health Organization,” the witness added, going on to promote ‘self managed' abortions by taking pills. At one point Bracey Sherman claimed that immigrant children once born are ripped from their families and caged, while ‘trans children' are “turned into political fodder,” and ‘black and brown children' live in fear of the police. She further claimed that all these issues are “not separate from abortion,” and should be taken into account by women when considering whether to go ahead with their pregnancy. The clear insinuation here is that it might be better for some minority children not to be born alive. Insane. Bracey Sherman also claimed that she owes her life to an abortion because her mother had one before she was born because she “wasn't in a relationship that was right for her.” “I share that to exercise my right to free speech because there are organizations and legislators who want to make what I just said a crime,” Bracey Sherman concluded, further claiming “Everyone loves someone who has abortions.” Democrats keep calling people as witnesses who sound and look like they are on the verge of a nervous breakdown to spew their cult like ideology. They refuse to define what a woman is, they claim denying men can get pregnant is ‘transphobic' and that disagreeing with them incites violence. Elsewhere during the hearing, a Democratic Rep. suggested that while discussing abortion the word ‘abortion' shouldn't be used, because it has “been weaponised” and has negative connotations. Incredible. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/world-voices/support

Gloria is joined by Jessica Arons, senior policy counsel at the ACLU, to talk about the decades-long legal battle by abortion rights opponents to overturn Roe. They discuss how we got here, what's being done to get our rights back, and what the Dobbs decision will mean for our already inadequate child care system. We're two weeks into the Roepocalypse and surprise, surprise, the conservative sun-dried turds against abortion are STILL burning down America AND still being evil as balls trying to hijack our uteri. How many total abortion bans went into effect this week? What's happening to abortion clinics and funds? Who the fuck is trying to force 10 year old rape victims to be moms? And is there ANY good news surfacing amongst this chaotic shitshow? (Spoiler alert: there's some bright spots!) Your favorite Buzzkills from Abortion Access Front's “Feminst Buzzkills Live!” podcast are here to pour y'all some piping hot bodily autonomy tea and deliver ALL the answers and updates on this week's latest anti-abortion BS from the invasive misogynistic species trying to get all up in your junk.  Helping us bulldoze through this week's bullshit are two special, iconic, womb warrior guests! First, we've got THE Beyoncé of Abortion Storytelling and founder and executive director of We Testify, Renee Bracey Sherman, here to blab with us about two of our favorite things: abortion and shitting on the Dems and Biden! She's dropping her knowledge on who the actual leaders of the abortion rights movement are (hint, it's people who have had aboritons), the power of storytelling, how language around abortion needs to change (“camping,” we're looking at you), and the dope origins of We Testify and what they're doing for folks who have abortions.  PLUS! The hilarious, whacktose intolerant comedian and co-host of Betches Sup Podcast, Milly Tamarez, is in the house! How has she been coping with all the shit that stays spewing out of America's misogynistic henchmen's mouths? By trolling and bullying these lame clowns, DUH! Across the pond, the United States Supreme Court made the decision to overturn Roe v Wade, meaning 33 million women in America were stripped of the right to an abortion. Many US states have already introduced new restrictions on abortion. Women and people who need abortions are having to travel further, often across state borders, and pay more. As expected, this ban will affect the most marginalised: poor women, queer people, women of colour and migrant women. The news has been dominated by the decision - but how many of us here in the UK know that abortion is a crime in England, Scotland, and Wales? This week, Media Storm speaks to doctors, activists, people who have had abortions, and leading abortion care providers in the UK, to find out just how restrictive the system here actually is. Plus, we hear from reproductive rights activists in Northern Ireland, about why decriminalisation without the services to match it means nothing. We're joined in the studio by Renee Bracey Sherman, founder of We Testify, and hailed as the ‘Beyoncé of Abortion Storytelling', to discuss the why abortion is still seen as a taboo in the mainstream media, the history of the 'debate', and how a minority of anti-abortionists got so loud. In light of the Supreme Court leak that threatens Roe v. On this special feed drop episode of the Choose Your Struggle Podcast, Jay plays a story from the podcast Abortion, With Love Titled To My Strength followed by a conversation between Omkari Williams and Renee Brown Sherman on Ms. Williams' podcast Stepping Intro Truth. Ms. Williams is a storyteller who teaches women how to use their stories to make a change. Ms. Brown Sherman is the Founder and Executive Director of We Testify, an organization dedicated to the leadership and representation of people who have abortions, increasing the spectrum of abortion storytellers in the public sphere, and shifting the way the media understands the context and complexity of accessing abortion care. After Monday night's leak, Jay didn't feel comfortable putting out the episode intended for this week. This moment is too big; too important. We have to be honest with what's happening in this country. This ruling will simply be the latest attack on everyone who isn't white, rich, and male in this country perpetrated by the Republican Party and allowed by the ineptitude and/or willful ignorance of the Democratic Party. Our system is broken and we're seeing real consequences. Jay and his wife Lauren attended a march Tuesday night in their city of Philadelphia that was sponsored by the organization behind the series of Women's Marches, and the Socialist Party. The march called for numerous outcomes including protecting the riot of abortion for all and the formation of a new party that accurately represents those the Democrats pretend to represent. If you or someone you love needs more info on an abortion, please visit your local Planned Parenthood. Bell Hooks once wrote, “If we want a beloved community, we must stand for justice,” & thanks to y'all, it looks like we're doing a pretty kickass job. With your support, @AbortionAccessFront is diving right into 2022, full throttle baby! In episode 5 of “Feminist Buzzkills Live!” we're wrapping up this reproductive rollercoaster of a year with a special co-host, founder & director of “We Testify,” co-author of upcoming book Countering Abortionsplaining, Renee Brace Sherman (aka the Beyoncé of abortion storytelling). She helps us narrow down the best & the 3rd worst abortion laws of 2021 (since it's pretty obvious which ones landed in 1st & 2nd) and she shares with us her predictions for 2022. Plus, abortion's #1 cis-male fan, professional Prooper, “The Smartest Man in the World” podcaster, & crew member of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” – Greg Proops.  We'll be streaming a “Best Of” episode next week but we will back live on Jan 13th. In this episode, we are on the ground after the oral arguments in one of the most important Supreme Court cases of a generation. On December 1, the Supreme Court held oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization—a case that some believe could overturn Roe v. Wade. The case involves a Mississippi abortion provision, banning most abortions after 15 weeks, with no exceptions for rape or incest. So, what's at stake in Dobbs—both in terms of abortion rights, and in terms of the Supreme Court's legitimacy?    Joining me to address these issues and more are a group of special guests:  Hillary Schneller: Hillary Schneller is a senior staff attorney at the Center for Reproductive Rights, and is co-lead counsel (along with Julie Rikelman) in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which the Supreme Court heard earlier this month.   Brigitte Amiri: Brigitte Amiri is deputy director of the ACLU's Reproductive Freedom Project and expert in reproductive rights law.   Aziza Ahmed: Aziza Ahmed is a professor of law at the University of California, Irvine. She is also the author of the forthcoming book Feminism's Medicine: Law, Science, and Social Movements in the AIDS Response, to be published by Cambridge University Press.   Renee Bracey Sherman: Renee Bracey Sherman is an activist, writer and reproductive justice activist, focusing on the visibility and representation of people who have abortions in media and pop culture. She is the founder and executive director of We Testify, an organization dedicated to the leadership and representation of people who have abortions.  Shannon Brewer: Shannon Brewer is the clinic director at Jackson Women's Health Organization, the last remaining abortion clinic in Mississippi. She has worked at the clinic for 20 years.   Special thanks to the contributing journalist Anoa Changa for interview work on this episode. Support the show (http://msmagazine.com)

The calls of activists have forced a national reckoning with the legacy of white supremacy in our country. That reckoning has led us to an examination of systems that exert control over Black lives, from policing to reproductive health care. There is a long history of the ways that reproductive freedom has been denied to Black women. And there is an important story of the ways that people of color, led by Black women, have built movements to liberate themselves and reclaim freedom. Joining us to discuss is Renee Bracey Sherman, the founder and executive director of We Testify, an organization dedicated to telling the stories of people who have had abortions.

We also dig into the abortion case currently in front of the supreme court, and talk about other cases being heard by the Supreme Court this year. Then we talk about Title X and dive into how reproductive rights figure into the 2020 election. About Bad on Politics: Bad on Politics is a monthly bonus episode where we invite a guest expert to help us break down a political topic. This week we had the opportunity to connect with Ash Williams, who is the Volunteer Coordinator for the Carolina Abortion Fund, and is also one of the architects of the Charlotte Uprising which they've been on the show before to talk about. I felt very lucky to get to talk with them again about the work they've been doing with Carolina Abortion Fund, but also about abortion in general and about expanding the meaning of reproductive justice work to encompass de-colonial views on care and healthcare work, environmental racism such as is going on in Flint Michigan, climate catastrophe, how this topic fits into a broader scope of reproductive capabilities being stolen from people, and many other aspects. They also spoke on how we talk about abortion from their own perspective as a Black trans person, and how transmisogyny, the erasure of transfeminine experience, and transphobia can play into how this issue is thought of. They also give suggestions for folks already doing reproductive justice work moving forward to create intentional access for all who need or want that. Abortion stigma is real, y’all! It can be scary, intimidating and anxiety-inducing to talk positively about abortion -- which is why Traitor Radio host Andrea Grimes launched the Taco or Beer Challenge, a month-long fundraising movement to support abortion access. It's the most delicious homework assignment we've given you on the show so far. Our storyteller on this episode is Aimee Arrambide, a badass reproductive justice crusader, lawyer and Texan of Mexican and Filipino descent who is part of We Testify, a group of storytellers working to bust abortion stigma. Aimee’s story is about abortion, of course, but it’s about so much more: It’s about her mental health journey, her professional career, and her relationship with her father -- who was also an abortion provider. Aimee’s story beautifully weaves her abortion experience into the larger fabric of her life -- she talks about what an important  decision it was for her, and how essential it was that she had access to abortion during a time in her life when, as she’ll tell you, she was approaching “rock bottom.” Listen, then take the Taco or Beer Challenge by eating a taco or drinking a beer (or both) and donating to your local abortion fund.
