In this episode of Great Practices, I'm talking with Ruth Pearce, owner of Pearce Insights, a firm dedicated to creating workplaces that foster mental health using research-based practices that are easy to implement. Listen in as she shares the principles she's learned from her hybrid AI coaching model and discusses how these principles can be applied to the PMO and Project Management landscape. Plus, you'll see why there's a need to have a healthy dose of skepticism when it comes to AI, and how guessing Ruth's weight shows the importance of independent thought. Did you know that there are certain character strengths that are more likely in PMO and project practitioners and some that are scarce? This gap is leading to some challenges in our ability to lead teams through change to deliver the high-IMPACT we're intending on our projects. As a long-time program manager, coach and character strengths practitioner, Ruth Pearce wanted to know if there are any positive personality characteristics that show up more (or less) in project personnel than in other people in the team or the general population. She collected data from hundreds of project, program, and PMO Leaders and the data was quite interesting…and very telling. In this episode, Ruth will discuss those findings and how you can close any gaps you see in yourself or your teams. Thanks for taking the time to check out the podcast! I welcome your feedback and insights! I'd love to know what you think and if you love it, please leave a rating and review in your favorite podcast player. Are employee's weaknesses the best place to spend your time as a project manager? Ruth Pearce doesn't think so. Listen in as Ruth Pearce, owner of Alle, LLC and author of the book “Be a Project Motivator: Unlock the Secrets of Strengths Based Project Management” discusses why it's better to build on strengths rather than focus on weaknesses, what can be done to shore up any weaknesses that may crop up, and how to transform your PMO from an ‘obstacle to everything” to a “solution for everything”.

“Focus some attention on your people and knowing those people, and understanding what their core strengths are because those are their drivers. Those are the things that really motivate them to show up and get stuff done.” If you lead projects, you’ve likely had battles with motivation in project management—whether it’s to find motivation to complete your own work, or to mobilize an entire team to meet a goal successfully. You may have won a battle here and there, but sometimes it can feel like the topic of motivation can become an all-out war. But by instilling some basic values and using some helpful tools to help you figure out what motivates people, you can win that war before it even starts. On this episode, Brett interviews Ruth Pearce, who is an accomplished project manager and coach, and the author of Be a Project Motivator: Unlock the Secrets of Strengths-Based Project Management. In conversation, they cover: Strengths-based project management The strengths that PMs possess Techniques used to motivate team members (and yourself) How to you keep your team motivated in the face of tight deadlines or other challenges How to build influence Quick tips and tactics to keep people motivated Resources mentioned in this episode Be a Project Motivator: Unlock the Secrets of Strengths-Based Project Management VIA Character strengths survey (this is a free link for our listeners) Ruth Pearce’s website (includes a blog and other valuable resources) Article on ProjectManagement.com: Team building for success - from the Project Manager up! In our second highlight reel, we will be showing clips of some of our favourite moments in the last four talks from the first day of our Transforming Spaces Conference that we will be publishing. The full talks will be released weekly so make sure to check them out as they pop up. This episode touches on the topics of sports, pregnancy, prisons, and making change. We are running a project on trans inclusion in sport: we aim for sport / physical activity organisations to become more knowledgeable and more confident in their ability to create and implement realistic, everyday trans inclusive practices. Alongside this, we aim to encourage trans people themselves to take up, or return to, physical activity and sport and all the benefits that can bring. If you are trans/non-binary and aged 16 or over, we would love to hear about your experiences and opinions about sport and physical activity! We have a survey open until May 31st 2019, so please do follow the link and let us hear you: http://genderedintelligence.co.uk/project/trans-inclusion-in-sport Unfortunately we won’t have a conference in 2019, but keep an ear open for the 2020 conference!
