“I just love storytelling,” Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, in regards to how she got involved with screenwriting. “I loved writing as a kid. I wrote children's books. I loved telling stories. I loved putting on shows in my living room. At more core, I love storytelling and the theater of it.” As a writer, Jennifer's credits include the TV series Sweet/Vicious, and the movies Someone Great, Unpregnant, Do Revenge, and Thor: Love and Thunder. “I like playing in different genres, but what I do lean towards are stories about women and stories about trauma, told in entertaining packages.” “The sweet spot, in terms of the stories I tell, is finding these emotional stories and putting them in these heightened environments.” In her premiere series, for example, Sweet/Vicious was about two vigilantes in collect who wanted justices for campus abuse. The “guttural” idea was “what if Quentin Tarantino wrote Girls? What would that look like?” This idea excited her and stayed with her. When she sold this script, she had about ten years of experience meeting people and “trying to figure out where there's a crack in the door where I can open the door further to step through the door.” Subscribe for video interviews on YouTube: www.youtube.com/c/CreativePrinciples?sub_confirmation=1 If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? "WE'RE GAY AND WE'RE PREGNANT!!!"If you're listening from America, you probably already know why we chose this week's show. We're here to talk about UNPREGNANT, an abortion road trip movie that tackles the severity of the lengths people are willing to go when they're denied abortion access, without ever feeling like a bad time. The world and the government are making us feel bad enough, we don't need a movie to make it even worse. This film was dropped on HBO Max during 2020 quarantine and went criminally underseen, but might be one of the best movies to watch to help process any feelings you may be having about Roe v. Wade being overturned. Television and film often allow people to make sense of the world. With abortion being center stage in many national conversations and with so many myths circulating about this type of care, it is especially important that TV and film represent abortion stories accurately. Steph Herold, researcher studying abortion in television and film at Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH), sits down to talk with us about abortion depictions onscreen and what Hollywood could include in storytelling to be more representative of those seeking abortion care.  Television and films have been telling abortion stories for a very long time, but sometimes the depictions aren't realistic. Often, abortion is portrayed as a risky or unsafe procedure (which is fundamentally untrue—it's one of the safest medical procedures a person can receive). In addition, characters that receive abortions in television and film don't often reflect those who receive abortions in real life; most abortion patients in real life are people of color, struggling to make ends meet, many of whom are already parents, yet the character onscreen who receives an abortion is often a young, white, single woman. In addition, characters don't face barriers to the care they need, including waiting periods, traveling, financial concerns, and gestational bans. Lastly, medication abortion is largely underrepresented onscreen. Still, over the last couple of years, TV and film have done a better job at telling compassionate and accurate abortion stories. 2020 saw the most abortion stories told on television in a year, and included Never, Rarely, Sometimes Always, Unpregnant, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Premature and St. Francis. Each showed a person accessing different types of abortion with the support of a friend or family member. More characters of color are accessing abortion on TV, including Olivia Pope on Scandal, a queer, Black character on the Bold Type, and Vic on Station 19.  LinksANSIRH on TwitterANSIRH on FacebookAbortiononscreen.org Take Action Follow ANSIRH on Twitter and Facebook. Visit abortiononscreen.org and find a list of over 500 TV shows and film that feature an abortion plotline. In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing UNPREGNANT (2020), which is currently streaming on HBO Max. The film, based on the book by Jenni Hendriks and Ted Caplan, with screenplay credits to Jenni Hendriks, Ted Caplan, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, Rachel Lee Goldenberg and Bill Parker, is directed by Rachel Lee Goldenberg. The story follows Veronica (Haley Lu Richardson) an ambitious teenager whose life is thrown into chaos when she discovers she is pregnant. With no one else to turn to, she asks an estranged friend from her childhood, Bailey (Barbie Ferreira) to help her make the trip across state lines to get an abortion 900+ miles away. Along the way, their time together brings them closer but also discoveries are made that drive them apart. Will Veronica make her appointment and get her procedure? Will Bailey still be there to bail her out? Not a perfect film but really enjoyable and a film that can be the catalyst to open up dialog with the young people in your life, especially after today's disastrous news of the SCOTUS overturning Roe v. Wade. The film has a run time of 1 h 43 m, and is rated PG-13. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Fortunately, they found four films that at least one of them had never seen before - some originals to the services and one dating back quite a few decades - to center the theme around this month. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. Hi friends! Thanks for your patience on this episode. After two days stuck in Tasmania, our editor @india_raine has gotten back to Brisbane safely. After a quick catch-up we dive into the first viral fashion trend of 2022; the Miu Miu skirt. Next up, we discuss the Vibe Shift. Coined by trend forecaster, Sean Monahan, the idea took the internet by storm after The Cut's Alison P. Davis wrote about it in a piece ‘A Vibe Shift Is Coming, Will Any Of Us Survive It?'. We chat about the idea, whether it's simply millennials not wanting to age, and how it relates to writer Haley Nahman's piece ‘The Death Of Sex' from her newsletter, Maybe Baby. This week, news broke around a change in Australian influencer laws. New advertising rules for social media influencers will change the way they're allowed to promote health products, like sunscreen, skincare, vitamins, protein powders, collagen powders and other supplements. We ask whether this is necessary or simply another way for women and LGBTIQA+ people to be financially penalised. We reference this article by The Australian and read comments made by scientist and content creator @ms_hannah_e. In recommendations, Maggie recommends a movie available on Binge titled ‘Unpregnant' while Jas recommends Netflix's ‘Inventing Anna'.If you want to support people in NSW and QLD who are impacted by the devastating floods, head here. It's been a while since we've talked about "the procedure", so prepare yourself for an education as Brenna reviews the state of reproductive health in Canada and the US (caveat: we use the term "women's" reproductive health, but should have acknowledged that non-binary and trans people also get abortions). It's in-depth, and disappointing (we might get a touch upset!) but it's in service of our discussion of Caplan and Hendriks' delightful book that does a lot of heavy lifting in a funny, quick-to-read package.Plus: comparing the book's crappy men to their film counterparts, Haley Lu Richardson and Barbie Ferreira's great film chemistry and just how many times will Joe say the A word?If you want more "Big A" talk, check out episodes 1.01 "Perks of Being a Wallflower"  and 2.32 "Never Rarely Sometimes Always (And More Sex!)Wanna connect with the show? Giancarlo Esposito can speak at length about his strategy for navigating a career in the arts, but what it all boils down to is quite simple: “Do what means something, and then don't be exclusive.” As first a child actor doing musical theater, then a voiceover and radio artist (Backstage magazine in hand), then as an award-winning scene-stealer onscreen, Giancarlo has pursued every role with the kind of passion required to persevere in such a fickle industry. “Your intention is proved out over time,” he tells his fellow artists. “If you feel like you're connected to that gift, then pursue that, whatever that is.” Born in Copenhagen and raised in Manhattan, Giancarlo spent his teenage years in Broadway musicals, then turned a radio and television communications degree at Elizabeth Seton College into a screen career. His Hollywood breakout came courtesy of Spike Lee in “School Daze,” then “Do the Right Thing,” “Mo' Better Blues,” and “Malcolm X,” as well as “Taps,” “The Usual Suspects,” “Ali,” “Once Upon a Time,” “Revolution,” “Okja,” and last year's “Unpregnant” and “Star Girl.” He's recently dominated prestige TV, earning five Emmy Award nominations—including this year as Moff Gideon on Disney+'s “The Mandalorian” and, most famously, as Gus Fring on AMC's “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul”—and has appeared on Netflix's “Dear White People,” Epix's “Godfather of Harlem,” and Amazon's “The Boys.” To read more of Giancarlo's wisdom, head over to backstage.com: https://bit.ly/3m7FL5f -- Backstage has been the #1 resource for actors and talent-seekers for 60 years. New movies discussed include recommendations: Boys State (8:00); The Devil All The Time (16:00); The Social Dilemma (24:45); Get Duked! (29:15); House of Hummingbird (32:10). And a few we urge you to avoid - Unpregnant, Mulan, I Used to Go Here, She Dies Tomorrow, Misbehaviour, Extra Ordinary (... yup, it was that kind of month). Plus, two genuine classics before the bow.
