This week, we're sharing an interview Ian conducted with cartoonists Isabella Rotman, Sage Coffey, and Marnie Galloway on the subject of the Abortion Pill Zine: A Community Guide to Misoprostol and Mifepristone out now from Silver Sprocket (and freely readable on their website). They discuss the process by which this resource was assembled, the benefits of local, focused abortion organizing, the timeliness and timelessness of the fight for safe abortion care, and the power of comics to disseminate valuable and complex information. Delve into the fierce debate over abortion rights in the U.S. and how recent measures could alter the course of reproductive freedom. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: The 2022 Supreme Court ruling to overturn Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health dramatically changed the political scene. Still, just two years on, we are witnessing another watershed moment in the struggle for abortion rights. This Election Day, 10 states will vote on whether to enshrine abortion rights in their state constitution. Since 2022, every ballot measure to protect abortion rights has passed while every measure to restrict or weaken those rights has failed. Meanwhile, extremist Republicans are pushing for a total national abortion ban and seem to have Trump on their side. He told Fox News just days ago that a national abortion ban is “off the table,” but “we'll see what happens.” Joining us to share what's at stake and what can be done are Nadine Smith, the director of Equality Florida who heads the state's largest organization dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Heidi L. Sieck is a Political Strategist & Founder of VOTEPROCHOICE that focuses on reproductive freedom at the state and local levels. And Renee Bracey Sherman, a reproductive justice advocate is the co-author of the just-released book, “LIBERATING ABORTION: Claiming Our History, Sharing Our Stories, and Building the Reproductive Future We Deserve.” Together they unpack how abortion, access to trans health, contraception and freedom from sterilization abuse are all part of the far Right's agenda to control bodies. Could reproductive rights leap forward in 2024, not back? Plus a commentary from Laura.“. . . Just last month we had the Gender Liberation March in DC . . . We had a tent for banned books because as they're banning sex ed, as they're banning trans youth healthcare, trans healthcare and abortion, they're also banning books . . . It's the same people. They're just fighting about a different thing on a different day. And so when we come together, we'll be able to stand against them.” - Renee Bracey Sherman“We have to remember that this is an infrastructure investment issue . . . For decades, the money on the anti-choice side has been going to investments in these local infrastructure. We don't operate like that on the progressive and political Democratic side. Most of our investments are going into the federal infrastructure, and that is the problem.” - Heidi L. Sieck“The governor in Florida has been so extreme. He has sent investigators to people's homes for signing the petition that got the constitutional amendment on the ballot that would restore access to abortion in Florida . . . Since Roe was overturned, the stories of those who've had abortion have become a central part of our national conversation. In part, that's due to the work of many activists in the reproductive rights and justice movement, like Renee Bracey Sherman, reproductive justice activist, abortion storyteller, and writer. She is the founder and executive director of We Testify, an organization dedicated to the leadership and representation of people who have abortions and share their stories at the intersection of race, class, and gender identity. Her path as a bi-racial Black woman to do the work that unabashedly centered abortion rights as a human right and communities that disproportionately seek abortion care (people of color) was not easy. Renee and I do a deep dive on her personal and professional journey as an activist and advocate. She also shares her thoughts on everything from the current moment we're in politically on abortion rights, why she has always chosen to be uncompromising in her fight for abortion access, the payoff from committing to finding your own path, some great tidbits from her recently released first book Liberating Abortion and more! What would a progressive vision of reproductive justice look like instead? As part of YES! Magazine's new initiative, Progress 2025, we explore that question with Renee Bracey Sherman.
Reproductive health access has become a major issue in U.S. elections in the nearly two years since Roe v. Wade was overturned. A series of elections and ballot initiatives in which reproductive rights have been at stake have driven high turnout, and more critical decisions for voters are on the horizon. Meanwhile, human rights advocates and activists link the issue to civil and human rights, specifically, the right to privacy and bodily autonomy. In our latest IJNotes episode on reporting on reproductive health, we spoke with Regina Mahone, a senior editor at The Nation magazine and co-host of The A Files: A Secret History of Abortion podcast alongside Renee Bracey Sherman. Mahone and Sherman are also co-authors of the forthcoming book, “Liberating Abortion.”Mahone discussed how reproductive rights are linked to the health of democracy in the U.S., and detailed how reporters can cover the wide-ranging issue in the context of the country's upcoming presidential election. Renee Bracey Sherman is a Chicago-born writer and reproductive justice activist committed to the visibility and representation of people who have had stigmatized experiences. In this episode, we discuss why it's so important to share your own story, how you can stand strong in speaking your truth, and how you can embrace the collective hug of support that comes along with joining a movement for change. Because your voice and story matters.
Abortion rights activist and founder of We Testify Renee Bracey Sherman joins the podcast to discuss how gerrymandering is an issue for both voting rights and abortion rights. Bracey Sherman talks with Marc about how we can't secure reproductive rights for all until fair ballot access is secured for all. ⭐️⭐️⭐️Sign up for Democracy Docket's new premium membership! This week is the one-year anniversary of the Dobbs decision, when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. Politicians think reproductive freedom isn't that big of a deal – “just a bunch of women, talking about their Dobbs again!” – but the truth is that women haven't forgotten. We're continuing to talk about it and share our personal stories, because those stories are how we connect with each other. We're “heart-wired” to respond to them. We're joined by Jen Perez, Red Wine & Blue's program director in Ohio. Jen tells her personal story about why she left her high-powered corporate job to get involved in politics, and the personal reasons that Dobbs motivated her to step up. Jen also shares some updates about the ballot measure to protect reproductive freedom in Ohio and how women across her state have been banding together to fight for their rights. After that, Amanda sits down with Renee Bracey Sherman, the founder of We Testify, an organization dedicated to uplifting and telling the stories of people who have abortions. Renee discusses what it's been like to lead an abortion storytelling organization in the wake of Dobbs and how she founded We Testify to make sure that people who have abortions don't just have a seat at the table but a seat at every table. Finally, Amanda, Rachel and Jasmine raise a glass to congressional aides, letters from camp, and celebrating half-birthdays in this episode's “Toast to Joy.”If you love this podcast and you want to help us bring more listeners into our community, we would love it if you could go into your podcast app and leave us a rating and review. We're so grateful that you're listening and we would so appreciate your help to bring even more women into the SWP family. MSNBC's Ari Melber hosts “The Beat” on Friday, April 21, and reports on Donald Trump's January 6 probe and the 2024 election field. Plus, Melber delivers instant analysis to the Supreme Court's abortion pill ruling. David Kelley, Michael Steele, Renee Bracey Sherman, Michelle Goldberg, Jamila Perrit, Angela Vasquez Groux, and Dahlia Lithwick join.
January 22nd was the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade—a bittersweet milestone, because there's no more Roe v. Wade to commemorate. Since the Dobbs decision last year overturned Roe, we've had an election that went pretty well for Democrats under the circumstances, but also created a false sense of reprieve. But now it's January and the dust is settled and there's still no national right to abortion. The anniversary can thus serve a real purpose as a wake up call after the midterms lulled many Americans into complacency. How is America different now with Roe gone than it was before? What are pro-choice forces doing to help where abortion has been banned or where it's under threat or where it's still legal? What more could they be doing? What more could we all be doing? And as we look ahead to elections in the future, what can our political leaders do to nationalize a referendum on abortion? Reproductive Justice activist Renee Bracey Sherman joins Brian Beutler to reassess the state of abortion rights in post-Roe America.
Another pro-abortion activist called to ‘testify' by Democrats in the House suggested Tuesday that it is better for minorities in America to be aborted than to be born and that she ‘owes her life' to an abortion. The House Energy and Commerce Oversight and Investigations panel heard from Renee Bracey Sherman, the founder and executive director of abortion ‘storytelling group' We Testify. As such, GOP representatives were faced with another child like person up on the stand, speaking in a cringe inducing passive aggressive tone and clearly unable to control her emotions. Bracey Sherman had even used a sharpie to scrawl the pronouns “SHE/HER” on the name plate provided to her by the house. She told the panel that when she was 19 years old and pregnant she considered throwing herself down the stairs and drank “an unsafe amount of alcohol,” in the hope off achieving a miscarriage, which she admitted she counts as a “successful abortion”. — RNC Research (@RNCResearch) July 19, 2022 Pro-abortion Democrat witness: I drank an "unsafe amount of alcohol" and "considered throwing myself down the stairs" to kill my unborn baby pic.twitter.com/zQj5C9HMPd — RNC Research (@RNCResearch) July 19, 2022 Pro-abortion Democrat witness Bracey Sherman calls a miscarriage a “successful abortion” pic.twitter.com/mEAUr6EfjB “That was when it [abortion] was legal in every state. Now, it is not [not true] and I know some will try the methods that I did,” she asserted. “And I want them to know that there are safe methods to self-managing their abortions according to the World Health Organization,” the witness added, going on to promote ‘self managed' abortions by taking pills. At one point Bracey Sherman claimed that immigrant children once born are ripped from their families and caged, while ‘trans children' are “turned into political fodder,” and ‘black and brown children' live in fear of the police. She further claimed that all these issues are “not separate from abortion,” and should be taken into account by women when considering whether to go ahead with their pregnancy. The clear insinuation here is that it might be better for some minority children not to be born alive. “That was when it [abortion] was legal in every state. Insane. Bracey Sherman also claimed that she owes her life to an abortion because her mother had one before she was born because she “wasn't in a relationship that was right for her.” “I share that to exercise my right to free speech because there are organizations and legislators who want to make what I just said a crime,” Bracey Sherman concluded, further claiming “Everyone loves someone who has abortions.” Democrats keep calling people as witnesses who sound and look like they are on the verge of a nervous breakdown to spew their cult like ideology. They refuse to define what a woman is, they claim denying men can get pregnant is ‘transphobic' and that disagreeing with them incites violence. Elsewhere during the hearing, a Democratic Rep. suggested that while discussing abortion the word ‘abortion' shouldn't be used, because it has “been weaponised” and has negative connotations. Incredible. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/world-voices/support

We're two weeks into the Roepocalypse and surprise, surprise, the conservative sun-dried turds against abortion are STILL burning down America AND still being evil as balls trying to hijack our uteri. How many total abortion bans went into effect this week? What's happening to abortion clinics and funds? Who the fuck is trying to force 10 year old rape victims to be moms? And is there ANY good news surfacing amongst this chaotic shitshow? (Spoiler alert: there's some bright spots!) First, we've got THE Beyoncé of Abortion Storytelling and founder and executive director of We Testify, Renee Bracey Sherman, here to blab with us about two of our favorite things: abortion and shitting on the Dems and Biden! She's dropping her knowledge on who the actual leaders of the abortion rights movement are (hint, it's people who have had aboritons), the power of storytelling, how language around abortion needs to change (“camping,” we're looking at you), and the dope origins of We Testify and what they're doing for folks who have abortions. PLUS! The hilarious, whacktose intolerant comedian and co-host of Betches Sup Podcast, Milly Tamarez, is in the house! How has she been coping with all the shit that stays spewing out of America's misogynistic henchmen's mouths? By trolling and bullying these lame clowns, DUH! Across the pond, the United States Supreme Court made the decision to overturn Roe v Wade, meaning 33 million women in America were stripped of the right to an abortion. Many US states have already introduced new restrictions on abortion. Women and people who need abortions are having to travel further, often across state borders, and pay more. As expected, this ban will affect the most marginalised: poor women, queer people, women of colour and migrant women. The news has been dominated by the decision - but how many of us here in the UK know that abortion is a crime in England, Scotland, and Wales? This week, Media Storm speaks to doctors, activists, people who have had abortions, and leading abortion care providers in the UK, to find out just how restrictive the system here actually is. Plus, we hear from reproductive rights activists in Northern Ireland, about why decriminalisation without the services to match it means nothing. We're joined in the studio by Renee Bracey Sherman, founder of We Testify, and hailed as the ‘Beyoncé of Abortion Storytelling', to discuss the why abortion is still seen as a taboo in the mainstream media, the history of the 'debate', and how a minority of anti-abortionists got so loud. Over the past year, near-total abortion bans have been instituted across America, including in Texas and Oklahoma. In December 2021, Beyond the Scenes host Roy Wood Jr. sat down with Texas-based OB/GYN and abortion provider, Dr. Ghazaleh Moayedi, to discuss Texas's new policies. In light of the Supreme Court leak that threatens Roe v. Wade, Dr. Moayedi rejoins Roy and executive director and founder of We Testify, Renee Bracey Sherman, to discuss where abortion rights are headed, how Texans and Oklahomans are already living without the protections of Roe v. Wade, and why voting isn't the most effective solution for supporting abortion rights. On this special feed drop episode of the Choose Your Struggle Podcast, Jay plays a story from the podcast Abortion, With Love Titled To My Strength followed by a conversation between Omkari Williams and Renee Brown Sherman on Ms. Williams' podcast Stepping Intro Truth. Ms. Williams is a storyteller who teaches women how to use their stories to make a change. Ms. Brown Sherman is the Founder and Executive Director of We Testify, an organization dedicated to the leadership and representation of people who have abortions, increasing the spectrum of abortion storytellers in the public sphere, and shifting the way the media understands the context and complexity of accessing abortion care. After Monday night's leak, Jay didn't feel comfortable putting out the episode intended for this week. This moment is too big; too important. We have to be honest with what's happening in this country. This ruling will simply be the latest attack on everyone who isn't white, rich, and male in this country perpetrated by the Republican Party and allowed by the ineptitude and/or willful ignorance of the Democratic Party. Our system is broken and we're seeing real consequences. Jay and his wife Lauren attended a march Tuesday night in their city of Philadelphia that was sponsored by the organization behind the series of Women's Marches, and the Socialist Party. The march called for numerous outcomes including protecting the riot of abortion for all and the formation of a new party that accurately represents those the Democrats pretend to represent. Today's guest hosts are Brent J. Cohen and Charlotte Hancock, Executive Director and Communications Director for Generation Progress. During today's episode, they discuss how the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, beyond being a devastating loss of a beloved individual and respected Justice, also puts the country in an extremely perilous situation. As many Americans remember, following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February of 2016, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to even begin the confirmation process of President Obama’s chosen nominee for the vacant Supreme Court seat, saying that the nomination would take place too close to an election. Now, with Donald Trump in the Oval Office—that pretense is gone. Many Senate Republicans who have stated on the record that they would refuse to confirm a nominee in 2020 have already backtracked on their earlier statements. And on Saturday, Donald Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to the open seat, who holds extremely conservative views on health care, reproductive rights, and more. One thing that’s different from what happened in 2016 is that now the election is not just approaching—it is already underway. Many people have already cast their ballots through early voting or mail-in voting. The voters deserve a say in who makes this next Supreme Court appointment. During the show, Charlotte and Edwith focus on what exactly is at stake with the Supreme Court vacancy—with a particular focus on the Affordable Care Act and reproductive rights. To discuss these topics and more, they are joined by Renee Bracey Sherman, Executive Director of Abortion Stories, and Juan Sarmiento, Media Manager for Young Invincibles. Season 1 Episode 6 features an interview with Elizabeth Estrada ( commonly known as Eli) - a Mexican immigrant organizer based in the Bronx working on reproductive justice in New York City and State. In this episode we discuss fake clinics, also known as crisis pregnancy centers. We do a deep dive into how fake clinics are intentionally confusing and coercing people to give birth by creating barriers and detours, as well as providing misinformation to people who are looking to learn about and access abortion. Elizabeth Estrada Bio:Elizabeth Estrada serves as the New York Field and Advocacy Manager at the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice. Previously, she served as the Civic Engagement Manager where she worked to raise the voices of Latinas nationally for policy change at all levels of government on issues that impact people's reproductive freedom and self-determination. Elizabeth immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico at the age of 4, where she remained undocumented until age 13. She began as a Sexual and Reproductive Health “Promotora” for the Feminist Women's Health Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Elizabeth has had the honor of organizing hundreds of women on reproductive justice in her 10 years of grassroots organizing experience.References During the Episode:Reach out to Eli to get involved in the fight against fake clinics in The Bronx and throughout NY State email: newyork@latinainstitute.orgPro Truth New York: a coalition of reproductive health, rights, and justice advocates, policy makers, and service providers, united to fight fake abortion clinicsExpose Fake Clinics: a national initiative created to tell the truth about manipulative, fake reproductive health centersAdvocates for Youth: where Eli first shared her abortion story via their 1in3 campaign.Yo Te Apoyo: a campaign from Latina Institute to destigmatize abortion, and shift the culture to one of compassion and dignity.Renee Bracey Sherman: award winning reproductive justice activist and writer with expertise in public abortion storytelling and ending abortion stigmaLifting Latina Voices Initiative at the Feminist Women's Health Center in Atlanta, GALegislation for a research board to measure impact of fake clinics: NYS Assembly passed the LSPC Study Bill (A.8212) on 7/21. But she also shares the realities that women, trans men and non-binary people face when trying to access abortion care. Whether she's driving someone across state lines to access better medical care or holding someone's hand during the procedure because they 're alone, Renee is passionate about abortion equity. *Please be advised that this episode highlights personal reflections on abortion, so please be cautious if this is a sensitive subject for you.* --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/shepluspod/support
The calls of activists have forced a national reckoning with the legacy of white supremacy in our country. That reckoning has led us to an examination of systems that exert control over Black lives, from policing to reproductive health care. There is a long history of the ways that reproductive freedom has been denied to Black women. And there is an important story of the ways that people of color, led by Black women, have built movements to liberate themselves and reclaim freedom. Joining us to discuss is Renee Bracey Sherman, the founder and executive director of We Testify, an organization dedicated to telling the stories of people who have had abortions.
We Testify abortion storytellers, Renee Bracey-Sherman and Beth Vial, share a blueprint for how to destigmatize abortion. This episode offers insight into the power of sharing abortion stories. Renee and Beth articulate some of the reasons why abortion storytellers remain silent, and discuss why building radical love and community for people who have had abortions matters.

"[Safe, legal and rare] is extremely antiquated in that it's focusing on shifting politics but not actually thinking about who are the people who are at the center of this issue: people like me who have abortions," reproductive justice activist Renee Bracey Sherman told us.Want to support 1A? In the first half of 2019, State legislatures across the South, Midwest and the Plains enacted 58 abortion restrictions, 26 of which would ban some, most or all abortions--even before most people know they’re pregnant. On the brighter side, 93 new laws that expand reproductive healthcare were enacted, including 29 that expanded access to abortion, including NY, Vermont, Maine and Nevada. In the midst of this maelstrom, in June, 2019 I attended a panel put on The Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health--about the threats against Roe v. Wade and what it means for patients. I found the speakers and the content really helpful in wrapping my arms around the state of affairs and wanted to share it with you---so the Bixby Center gave me permission to do just that. The speakers you will hear include Stephanie Toti (who successfully argued Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt in front of the Supreme Court) and now runs the Lawyering Project whose mission is to strengthen protections for reproductive rights under U.S. law and promote reproductive justice), Erin Grant (of the Abortion Care Network, an organization that supports independent abortion providers) and Renee Bracey Sherman (of the National Network of Abortion Funds which works to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access). This panel discussion, “meeting the needs of patients post-Roe v. Wade” was moderated by Dan Grossman a professor at UC San Francisco and the director of their research program Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health, which you will hear referred to as ANSIRH. The Bixby Center is part of University of California San Francisco, and they research, train and advocate to advance reproductive health policy and practice worldwide through an evidence-based approach. For those of us who use birth control, let’s give them a shout out. Their researchers have played a part in testing every contraceptive method currently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Renee developed and designed a curriculum for storyteller support and training based on her extensive interviews with abortion storytellers. In 2014, she published the results and recommendations from these interviews in two 20-page guides, Saying Abortion Aloud, which are used and referenced across the reproductive health, rights, and justice field. Abortion rights are under attack. And while many are scared, maybe for the first time, the push to control and criminalize women's health care is nothing new. For many Americans, access to abortion as promised after Roe v. Wade never really came. We discuss reproductive justice and ways to get involved in your community with activist Renee Bracey Sherman. And we learn how Chicago women took action to create safe, private ways to access abortion in the 1970s under the pseudonym JANE with one of the collective's members, Judith Arcana.
