A conversation connecting two generations
Season 2 of GENTalks: Cross-generational Conversations is now: And Then There's That...A Multigenerational Conversation Kaitlin and Katie are back for the first time since Kaitlin got married. She is now Kaitlin Chappell Rogers. This is also the first episode since they returned from their adventure to She Speaks 2017. Todays episode centers around being overwhelmed when we really don't have any reason to be overwhelmed, hence the title, OVERWHELMED WHEN ALL IS WELL. Can you relate? Connecting generation to generation is the heart behind this podcast. We are better together and we have so much to learn from one another. Join Kaitin and Katie as they have their last recorded conversation before Kaitin Chappell becomes Kaitlin Rogers. In a special late night addition, Kaitlin and Katie have a good old fashion girls sleepover, connecting the generations one gab session and heart share at a time. Check out #RoadtoRogers and Kaitlin Chappell and Caleb Roger's Wedding Website Katie has the special privilege of being the Live Event Artist at Kaitlin' s wedding. (You can check out Katie's art gallery to date here: https://psalm8110.com/art-gallery/ *although gallery is under construction and will have a new look soon:) What a privilege and blessing for Katie to get to capture the moment on canvas for one who is a dear friend, a sister-in-christ and who has become like a daughter. Laughter is good medicine and taking the time to connect on a couch, face to face, with coffee, or whatever is your jam, is priceless, powerful, and the gift of presence that keeps on giving! Just like Kaitlin prays that her wedding will be an encounter with God for all who attend, Katie and Kaitlin pray that this podcast invites listeners to encounter God for themselves and then sends listeners out looking to connect with the generations around them, while being plugged into the Source, the ONE connection, that is a MUST in order to fuel meaningful relationships. A blank canvas is a beautiful metaphor for marriage. Different mediums, colors, textures etc... come together building something new, one brushstroke at a time. Mess-ups happen along the way but new brushstrokes come in to make masterpieces out of those messes. New beginnings are always possible in painting and in marriage. Layered paint adds depth and layers of life add lessons that are priceless when learned and applied. The conversation took a turn and the girls camped around God's Word and Katie's latest canvas, "The Angel of Gethsemane". *Below is the poem God crafted in and through Katie in response to Jesus's time in the Garden of Gethsemane just before His crucifixion and resurrection. “The Angel of Gethsemane” I bet the angels sang, “Pick me! Pick me! Pick me!” But Father chose just one for GETHSEMANE. The Darling of Heaven, knelt down to pray, Sweating blood in the garden, what did HE say? Did Father choose the angel, whose singing was the best? Or did HE pass out papers, to see who aced a test? Jesus was in anguish. Could all of Heaven see, The selfless sacrifice in Gethsemane? “Father remove this cup from me,” Papa was all ears. “But Dad, I want what You want.” Heaven was in tears. Did Jesus even notice the angel by his knee, A chosen host of Heaven for Gethsemane? What if you were picked, to strengthen God’s Own Son? Did the angel feel unworthy? But said, “Thy will be done.” God’s messenger at once, was standing right beside, The Lord of Lords and King of Kings, the apple of God’s eye. The angel does his job and Jesus is revived. Only to pray harder, to Father He confides. How long did the angel stay, with Jesus on that day? What did the angel do; what did the angel say? I bet there is a library where saints and angels write, And I bet there is a book about that angel’s night. *For more about this poem and the heart behind it, check out the Our City On A Hill link in the Resources Referenced. As Kaitlin enters the final stretch before her wedding, just a few weeks away, this conversation revolves around the loving "ins and outs" of THE RING. Which is it, THE WEDDING RING or THE BOXING RING? Good advice is timeless. Whether we are single, dating, engaged, newly married or in the "seasoned" category, we can all use relationship refreshers that, when applied, help us live responsive, not reactive, lives. Marriage 101: 1-Stay away from using ALWAYS AND NEVER in "spicy and dicy", really any, conversations. 2-Counting to 10 before responding is NEVER a bad thing to do:) 3-Pressure points can be fertile ground for growth, when we hold our tongues to pray and ponder, instead of holding a grudge while we pout and prance off. 4-The "Sandwich Conversation technique" serves everyone well: one way to approach "hard" conversations productively (high)1 thing you appreciate - (low)1 thing you did not appreciate - (high)1 thing you appreciated and the only thing the other person can respond with is THANK YOU! **Beginning and ending on a high note, makes the valley not so disastrous. 5- Shared activities are important. **"2 become 1" does not mean that each gives up what makes them unique or their personal preferences; it means we compliment one another, celebrating differences, while finding common ground to grow in and on together. Relationships are ever growing. While comprise is a negative when it comes to morals, it is a necessity if we want thriving relationships. 6-Cherish the traditions from both of your pasts as you move into a life together, while establishing new traditions unique to the ONE you have now become. 7- COMMUNICATION COMMUNICATION COMMUNICATION - Kaitlin shares the premarital counseling curriculum her church uses: Check out Dr.Les and Leslie Parrott: http://www.lesandleslie.com **"Les and Leslie. A husband-and-wife team who not only share the same name, but the same passion for helping others build healthy relationships. In 1991, the Parrotts founded the Center for Relationship Development on the campus of Seattle Pacific University – a groundbreaking program dedicated to teaching the basics of good relationships." Kaitlin and Katie jump straight into a conversation about the creative in all of us. We are created to create. Do you believe that? Creating "your thing" is simply an act of obedience when you know God has asked you to write, paint, speak, sing, act, dance, etc... for "AN AUDIENCE OF ONE"! We are conduits for God's fingerprint in our lives. We write from and for HIM by sharing HIS message, HIS beauty, with our world. Fear of man is one of our biggest obstacles when it comes to pushing publish, post, tweet etc... When we truly believe that our message will add value to the world around us, we must push past that fear and push publish or post anyway! Yes, it is RISKY BUSINESS but WORTHY NONETHELESS! Stepping out of our comfort zone is usually where our creativity takes flight. Lightening round question: What are you most excited about right now? Due to technical difficulties, episode 20 is being published AFTER Episode 21, although recorded before. This is just part of taking the journey before the people! (see Deut. 10:11) In true GENTalks spontaneous and improv fashion, Kaitlin and Katie have a conversation about "the messy middle" or "the mean-time", the time we have here on earth between our salvation moment and when we go Home to Heaven. The "messy middle" is where we have a choice: Will we live a meaningful life in the "mean-time" or will we get sucked into a life "full of stuff", but lacking meaning? Check out the slideshow below, just one local example of a city choosing the "meaningful in the mean-time!" ** celebrating 2 years of "meaningful in the mean-time" at ourcityonahill.net It is set to the full song of our GENTalks into and outro music. Wrestling with some technical difficulties, Kaitlin and Katie are a little late sharing a couple of resent conversations. The next episodes will be out of order; Easter has come and gone but the time spent together catching up was still priceless and definitely worth sharing. In this episode Kaitlin fills us in on her special bachelorette weekend in Savannah, GA and how she saw glimpses of God's glory all along the way. **Check out Cathedral of St. John the Baptist,https://savannahcathedral.org , one of the treasures Kaitlin visited with her bridesmaids. Kaitlin and Katie savor the splendor of taking Christ with us everywhere we go, even bachelorette parties. It might sound irreverent to some, but there is no place Jesus would rather be than invited to our everything. Just like our Bibles are not intended to be big fancy books that sit on a shelf and collect dust our Jesus is not a far away God we leave on a throne. Our Bibles, our Jesus, are the most important traveling companions we could ever have. Take the time to connect with the generations around you. Kaitlin and Katie discuss Christian Comparison. Comparison is the thief of contentment and joy and when it crosses over to our faith walk the enemy of our soul celebrates, while the heart of God breaks. The enemy's mission has been and will always be, to kill, still and destroy. Once he knows our soul is off the table, we are saved, the enemy wants to steal our joy and destroy our witness. Social media can be such a Kingdom building place, but it can also be a contentment killer. Kaitlin shares her take aways from Annie F. Downs podcast episode with Adam Weber, a pastor from Sioux Falls, South Dakota , Embrace Church. He is also the author of a new book called "Talking With God". Adam talks about how pastors are real people, not to be put on a pedestal. Adam is honest with his short comings and his congregation knows him as a person first. Adam's book, "Talking With God: What To Say When You Don't Know How To Pray" is a treasure. God does not compare His children to one another. God does not compare our prayers. God is simply looking for His kids to come to Him wholeheartedly and be honest. Our honesty with God is the key to our intimacy with God. We can have as much of God as seek to. He is available. Are we? Are our eyes fixed on Christ or is our head on a swivel? Are we locking eyes with the ONE or comparing ourselves to the world around us? Lean into Jesus. He fills our cup. He gives us our direction and next step. We move forward splashing what we are full of! What are we full of? MAY WE STEER CLEAR OF COMPARING OUR SPLASH ZONES, WHILE STICKING CLOSE TO OUR BROTHER'S AND SISTERS IN CHRIST! WE WERE MADE TO SPLASH TOGETHER! Episode 17: The Pursuit of Purpose Kaitlin and Katie talk about the pursuit of purpose in episode 17. They share podcasts, Bible stories and personal stories reflecting on God purpose and calling. We live in a world that is more than willing to tell us what our purpose “should be” or “could be.” If we do not know why God put us here, we will let selfish ambition, worldly words of affirmation or natural ability give us our WHY. None of those will ever fit the God-shaped hole in our hearts. Just like the maker of a product, defines the purpose of a product; our Maker, defines our divine purpose! Don’t let the world deter you from your purpose. Sometimes we need to respond like Nehemiah did: “I am doing a great work. I can’t come down. Why should the work come to a standstill just so I can come see you?” “I’m Doing a Great Work; I Can’t Come Down” Nehemiah 6:1-4 MSG When Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall and that there were no more breaks in it—even though I hadn’t yet installed the gates— Sanballat and Geshem sent this message: “Come and meet with us at Kephirim in the valley of Ono.” I knew they were scheming to hurt me so I sent messengers back with this: “I’m doing a great work; I can’t come down. Why should the work come to a standstill just so I can come down to see you?” Four times they sent this message and four times I gave them my answer. Craig Groeshel was told my many that the Bible should never be given away for free on the internet. He stayed the course, he did not come down from the wall and YouVersion was birthed. “A free Bible on your phone, tablet, and computer. YouVersion is a simple, ad-free Bible that brings God's Word into your daily life.” https://www.youversion.com Craig Groeshel https://www.life.church/watch/i-choose/ The Best Advise Dr. Maya Angelou has ever given – and received: SuperSoul Sunday: OWN - YouTube https://youtu.be/aHvTWvKIPHo The Purpose Driven Life https://www.amazon.com/Purpose-Driven-Life-What-Earth/dp/031033750X In a nut shell, our purpose is to know and enjoy God, and bring HIM glory with our lives. When we die, we will be asked 2 questions: What did you do with My Son, Jesus? (Purpose) What did you do with the gifts I gave you? (Calling) Do we use our gifts, time, talent, and treasure to love, enjoy, and share Jesus? Our Calling is the “How”, but our purpose is the “Why” . Prayerfully this conversation will ignite your passion to pursue your God-given purpose, knowing that you are equipped and empowered by the Holy Spirit as you function in your God-given calling. Don’t get hung up on the definitions and the differences in purpose and calling, just know that we all have both and if we seek God, we will find Him and He is ready and willing to explain everything we need to know as we journey together with HIM. As always, the hope behind these talks is that they will encourage you to connect with the generations around you. We have much to learn from one another and we are most definitely #bettertogether ! Kaitlin and Katie dive in quickly today sharing some of their "God Winks" through the years. They share the comforting ways God has shown up during the death of loved ones and the unexpected ways He has surprised them on any given ordinary day. They had a hard time holding back tears. You may want the tissue close. WHAT'S A GODWINK? A godwink is what some people would call a coincidence, an answered prayer, or simply an experience where you'd say, "Wow, what are the odds of that!" SQuire Rushnell, author of "When God Winks" https://www.whengodwinks.com/faqs/ https://www.whengodwinks.com The hope behind this podcast is that it will encourage listeners to start looking for the God Winks in their own lives. When we look back and see how God has shown up, it builds our faith and reminds us of His unwavering faithfulness and extravagant love. The heart behind this podcast is to inspire listeners to connect with the generations that have gone before them and that are coming behind. Her "interesting word search" stemmed From "How to Write Short": Clark shares the writing short secret of the "effect of a single elegant word- a grace note- in an otherwise straightforward composition." Definition of xenophobe one unduly fearful of what is foreign and especially of people of foreign origin (used in a sentence: America began as a melting pot of immigrants but appears to be turning into a crock pot of xenophobes.) Definition of marginalia: marginal notes or embellishments (as in a book) "Marginalia" was the perfect bow to wrap up their conversation. Leaving margin means we leave room to take notes, to notice, to stop and smell the wildflowers! As always, the hope behind this podcast is that it will encourage, maybe make you laugh, cry, and relate, and then go out and start a conversation of your own with someone from a different generation. We need each other; we have much to glean from one another and we are most definitely #bettertogether!
Kaitlin and Katie dive straight into the deep water as they discuss the idea that "God does not have a plan for our lives" but He does have Kingdom purpose and that is a different outlook altogether. Another way it's been put: God is not in control BUT HE IS IN CHARGE! (Thank you Bill Johnson, Bethel Church!) How do we picture God? Donald Miller paints a beautiful word picture of how he sees God, one that resonated with Kaitlin and Katie and it might with you, as well: "I see a dad sitting down next to a giant piece of butcher paper. Next to him is his daughter and a box of crayons. I see God wanting to do something with us, wanting to create and imagine. I see Him letting us have control of our will and our desires and I see HIM bonding with you as the two of you create a new and better world to live in." ~ StoryLine, Donald Miller Their conversation celebrates the power of story and challenges us to delve into what makes a meaningful life. "People who have noble ambitions live inspiring lives. Martin Luther King wanted racial equality and Mother Teresa wanted dignity for the marginalized... What we want matters." ~StoryLine, Donald Miller What are our noble ambitions? Are we writing a story with our lives that is moving in that direction? If not, are we brave enough to start? Storyline is an amazing process that helps us gain mental clarity to start or continue writing a personal life story that is meaningful. Kaitlin and Katie invite you into their latest conversation about "The Woman at the Well" and how "She is me!" When we grasp even the tiniest hem of the grace we have freely received, we are able to see ourselves in everyone's story. It is in recognizing "She is Me" that we are able to extend the grace we didn't earn but gratefully receive and then generously lavish it upon others. This timeless meeting between Jesus and a woman whom society deemed defiled draws our hearts to encounter Christ for ourselves. The Samaritan woman's story is all of our stories. Jesus came and leveled the playing field, extending hope and grace to ALL. Those who look to the Lord are radiant. Their faces are never covered IN disgrace. They are covered OVER IN grace! Kaitlin and Katie share snapshots from their lives thus far and their appreciation for a Savior that calls them, us, "Sought After", a Savior who still meets us at our "wells", lifts up our gaze and in an instant makes us brand new, sending us back out into the world with heads held high, saying, "Come meet a Man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?" How we answer that question for ourselves changes everything. We know how "SHE" answered. How do we? May you sift out the gold from this conversation and let the rest fall by the wayside:) The hope behind GENTalks is that you will leave hugged, encouraged and excited about sitting down with someone from another generation to have a conversation, learning from and loving one another well! Matthews ______________________________________ GENTalks is a Cross-generational conversation. Kaitlin (24) and I (Katie, 47) are bridge building, as they talk about culture, relationships, creativity, faith, life, and pretty much everything from two different generational perspectives. The heart behind this podcast is to highlight our need for one another and how we are all #bettertogether! Disclaimer: Kaitlin and Katie agreed that if this podcast was ever going to actually happen, it would have to be relatively spontaneous and pretty much unedited:) They are taking the journey alongside one another and you. It is messy at times but real and completely unscripted. They collectively decide on a topic and then they are basically plopping down on the couch to unwind and catch up, taking you along for the ride. 47 and 24 really do have so much to learn from and love about one another! What ages can you fill in? #thesearethemoments They would love your feedback and would love to know some of your answers to the lightening round questions. This is community and Lord knows we need each other! A Link to Katie's blog, where she keeps a link to GENTalks: https://psalm8110.com/podcast/
Join in Katie and Kaitlin's conversation about the many ways GOD's plans trump their own plans every time! The heartbeat behind each of these conversations is to encourage, share each other's joy and pain and inspire others to connect with the generations around them. We are #bettertogether! Sift out the gold; go to the Love Story of God's Word as your litmus test for Truth and if anything offends at all, PLEASE KNOW that to offend or make a "point" is never the point! May these conversations POINT to the love and TRUTH of Christ lived out in loving ALL OTHERS WELL! May we continue to join together in circling the outgoing and incoming White House administration in prayer! Kaitlin and Katie close out the year in episode 9 discussing the "gift of presence" in order to remind themselves and others of the real reason for the season. Christmas is the day Jesus came to provide our way back to the Father. HE gave us the greatest gift of presence so that we could be present with HIM forever! Being present, not perfect, is our aim in relationships here on earth. Kaitlin shared her struggle to enjoy the present moment at times caught up in efforts to get the perfect gift or prepare for the next thing. The struggle is real for most of us and Kaitlin generously gives us the gift of "me too" as she shares candidly from the heart. She referenced Shauna Niequist's book "Present Over Perfect" - https://www.amazon.com/Present-Over-Perfect-Leaving-Frantic/dp/0310342996/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8 - a great gift for anyone this Christmas Season. Buying this gift for herself was a beautiful reminder that our relationships with God and others are the most important things and by investing in herself she is actually blessing the people around her. Katie shared a story from the Colour Conference she attended several years ago about being present "on the way." Our journey is the destination! (Colour Conference is a Hillsong women's gathering, one you don't want to miss if you can make it to Sydney, Australia. Definitely one for the "bucket list" and you will most definitely return with your cup overflowing - check out the conference details here - http://hillsong.com/colour/ Katie also shared a YouTube channel her son was listening to while she was writing just that morning. She almost told him to shut down the distraction but when she heard Christopher Duffley singing "Open The Eyes of My Heart Lord" - http://www.christopherduffley.com - she knew God was speaking a "be present" message to her that she thankfully did not miss! Katie and Kaitlin finish out the 2016 year with the best gift they have ever received, that cost nothing, or next to nothing and their favorite New Year's Eve memories from childhood. A huge THANK YOU once again, to the musical talent behind the Holiday blend at the beginning and end of the podcast: "2mindz is a Hip-Hop producer of good vibes, looking to work with serious minded artist to spread good music out to the world." For Beats: 2mindzz@gmail.com Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from GENTalks. May you go into 2017 inspired to link up with someone from another generation in order to glean from and grow alongside one another! #bettertogether
In Episode 8 Kaitlin and Katie have their first interview and it is live and local! Toya Poplar is the epitome of "Open-book living!" She is the author of "Stop Write There" (http://stopwritethere.com) "...an interactive journal that prompts you to probe your heart before and during the creative process. Whether you are a seasoned writer, aspiring author, avid Journaler, or a Pastor who would like to publish past sermons; if you are a lover of words and a lover of The Word, Stop Write There is the book for you!" This is also the first episode with their new intro and exit jingle by 2mindz, A Hip-Hop producer of good vibez. Also looking to work with serious minded artist to spread good music out to the world. For Beats: 2mindzz@gmail.com 2mindz will be working alongside Kaitlin and Katie to keep the beat fresh. Stay tuned-in for future episodes, where the generations continue to come together, blended, old school and new school swag, in melodies and conversations! **You will also want to check out Melvin Poplar, Toya's husband and Christian Rap artist, at http://www.proverbalist.com Amazing talent from and for The King of Kings! Toya Poplar is not only an author, but she is a talented photographer as well. Check out her photos at , www.poplartreeoflife.com ! Toya, like Kaitlin and Katie, has a heart to see the dividing lines fall, differences celebrated and truth proclaimed unapologetically. She, and local food artist, April Boddie, started "S.O.S: Save Our Sons" http://www.saveoursonshuntsville.com Two Jesus loving, son loving, mamas saying, "We have to do SOMETHING to educate our sons about police pull over conduct." Together these brave women planned and hosted a dinner and dialogue in which black men spoke into the lives of black youth ranging from ages 14-18. The dialogue is still going and "the walls are a tumbling down!" Toya and April consider themselves "Change Agents" who aren't afraid to talk about uncomfortable topics. Their only fear is of what will happen if we don't begin to discuss those things that divide us! **Kaitlin and Katie echo this heart beat! And last but not least, Toya discusses a blog series she is in right now called, "40 Days Until 40"- https://stopwritethere.wordpress.com Check it out and be blessed! The interview concludes with the customary lightening round, but Toya Poplar is in the hot seat! It is a hoot you will not want to miss so we hope you stick around until the very end. You won't be sorry:) Kaitlin and Katie love feedback so please leave a review. Their prayer is that they add value to your world and encourage you to reach across dividing lines, whether it be generational, racial, religious, geographical, socio-economic, etc... and just love well, gleaning from and growing together! They try to keep it to 3 questions, cultural, spiritual and relational and each answer from their generations. You never know what will come out of their mouths but it is always surprising in the best sort of way:) Disclaimer: Kaitlin and Katie both agreed that if this podcast was ever going to actually happen, it was going to have to be relatively spontaneous and pretty much unedited:) They are taking the journey alongside you. It is messy at times but real and completely unscripted prior to deciding on a topic and then plopping down on the couch to unwind and catch up, taking you along for the ride. 46 and 24 really do have so much to learn from and love about one another! #thesearethemoments Hopefully these conversations will encourage you to link up with someone from another generation and share the gift of presence! This is a grace place, where you are welcomed with open, wobbly, all-in arms!
A Letter to the Next Generation (Continued...) You have had a suitcase on your bed since the day you were born. It has been slowly closing as you approach this day. Along the way, for the past 16-17-18 years, your parents, teachers, friends, mentors, coaches, authors, musicians, movie-makers, a host of acquaintances and even strangers have been putting things into your suitcase. We are taking this opportunity to stuff some last minute items in as well. These gifts are an eclectic mix of lessons learned from life experience and divine appointments along the way. It would be selfish to not share. Some of what we are sneaking in the corners of your crowded case, you may already have, but a little extra of THESE items will never hurt. Plus a few extras: Pondering the word "dwell"- What are the things we dwell on? What could we ponder instead? How do you quiet your mind? And the quote: "Be who you needed when you were younger!" What would that look like?
