It can be easy for our natural desires to change and grow to become a never-ending quest for continued self-improvement and optimization.  This can lead us down a road where we're always chasing what comes next because we believe that next version of ourselves will be better than who we are now. And without meaning to, we can end up making our present selves inferior to some superior future self, and always feel a low level of discontent with ourselves and our lives. On today's episode of the podcast, I'm inviting you to the idea of choosing present over perfect. And I'm giving you thoughts and strategies to be more present in your life and to value you who you are and where you are, without worrying that your contentment will make you complacent. If you're someone who finds it difficult to rest or if you find yourself always trying to prove or earn your worthiness, I hope this episode will allow you to embrace your inherent goodness and trade your quest for perfection for joy in the present.

Interviewed by Dr. Michelle Canfield Watson, Jeff shares powerful encouragement and insights for fathers in any stage of parenting.    Full SHOW NOTES for today's conversation   Key Takeaways   Tell your children you love being their dad.  Challenge yourself to step into the unknown with your whole heart.  You can gamify every stage of fathering.  Most fathers rank themselves worse than average, but you can flip the script.   Jeff Zaugg   Jeff Zaugg is the founder of dadAWESOME and FATHERS FOR THE FATHERLESS, two ministries that resource and rally dads through engaging podcasts and 100-mile bike rides. Jeff and his wife, Michelle, have been married for seventeen years and are parents to four daughters.   Key Quotes   14:00 - "I call it the intentional 40. I turned 40 about 14 months ago, and I said, Hey, if I could get more intentional moments with my wife, that would that would be good in so many levels, more intentional moments with my girls, more intentional moments with friends and more intentional moments with mentors. The drift, I want to be a dad, a man, a follower of Jesus who is dreaming and not drifting. And our dreams, often we have to take action to spark bigger dreams, and we have to stretch ourselves and be a little bit vulnerable and do something that's hard." 39:02 - "I'll give away more of me, in my heart, that I think most of us dads, the same way we give all of ourselves to the stranger and a fraction of ourselves to the little precious gifts."   Links From Today's Conversation   Full Transcript of the Conversation  Dr. Michelle Watson Canfield's Website Dr. Michelle Watson Canfield's Books DadAwesome, Episode 277 (Part 1), with Dr. Michelle Watson Canfield DadAwesome, Episode 278 (Part 2), with Dr. Michelle Watson Canfield Ephesians 3:20   Connect with dadAWESOME   Learn about our FATHERS FOR THE FATHERLESS events in 2023: https://f4f.bike/ Follow @dadawesome on Instagram Make a Donation to dadAWESOME (tax-deductible) Join the dadAWESOME Prayer Team Receive weekly encouragement by texting "dad" to 651-370-8618

In her book, Present Over Perfect, Shauna Niequist asks, ″What would our lives be like if our days were studded by tiny, completely unproductive, silly, nonstrategic, wild and beautiful five-minute breaks, reminders that our days are for loving and learning and laughing, not for pushing and planning, reminders that it's all about the heart, not about the hustle?″ What would that be like? Today's episode of Creative Lift, "Living the Artful Life: Design for Delight," builds on the ideas we explored in episode 55: Create Story Moments. We'll look at additional ways to be intentional about savoring moments as part of living an artful life. How, for instance, might we find luxury in small, everyday delights? How might we learn to appreciate the simple things in life? The invitation in this episode is to design an evening of delight and live it up to the fullest. The best part is that not only will your delight be FUN for you and whomever you include in your experience, but when you tell the story of your delight-filled evening with others, you'll spread joy and happiness to others, too. What I'm learning is this: delight is contagious! Visit this link for the show notes. Episode Links: Find me on Instagram: @naomikinsman Find Alex on Instagram: @ag.doherty

In my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, I write about how the "old friend" doesn't necessarily mean than you've known one another for decades. All that is required to hold that Life Council seat is to have a friend who has known you from one version of yourself into another. That actual timeline might vary.  But Shauna Niequist is one of my oldest friends however you measure it. We met in the late 90's working at summer camp, where (as I wrote about in my first book Share Your Stuff), I learned from Shauna a different way to walk in the world than I had previously been exposed to.  For twenty-five years, Shauna has been a friend, role model, mentor, and, yes, even a fellow obsessive as we discuss in this episode.  Shauna Niequist is the New York Times bestselling author of Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine, Savor, Present Over Perfect, and I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet. She is married to Aaron, and they live in New York City with their two sons.  To listen to the full reading tangent Shauna and I take in this conversation, you'll have to join my Secret Stuff community.  LEARN MORE ABOUT SECRET STUFF You can learn more about Shauna here Follow Shauna on IG Follow Shauna on FB Subscribe to Shauna's Substack Reading & Eating   FULL SHOW NOTES HERE   MENTIONED: Episode 112: Who was there? In this Enneagram +Yoga podcast episode, Kat and Christy interview Lisa McBryde @lamcbryde about her life as a Yoga Teacher, Enneagram 8, and practices in her life that have led to personal growth. The books Lisa mentions in this episode are Present Over Perfect by Shauna Niequist, The Magic Bridge by Dr. Rev. Herbert Barks, & The Sender: A Story About When Right Words Make All The Difference by Kevin Elko and Bill Beausay. Lisa was born and raised a country girl from Jasper, Tennessee and was the son her Dad never had. She wanted to be a nurse for as long as I could remember and followed that dream to become a RN in 1982. Her specialty was Oncology and she administered chemotherapy to cancer patients and supported them in a very difficult time. Over 30 years ago she "fell" into yoga and like nursing it also became a passionate calling. Lisa tries to teach in such a way that she pushes the student, yet encourages them to feel a connection with every breath they take. She says she is a Type A personality and owns it 100% and so the yin part of her practice was initially a challenge, but now is such a welcome release. Her first certification was with Yoga Alliance. She had initially been teaching in the fitness industry and this option was part of that discipline. She met Sara Mingus and she steered her toward 200 hour teacher training with Dolly Starvos. Dolly and Lisa really connected and her eyes and mind were opened to so many things. This discipline called yoga serves its students individually and meets them where they are. She then completed Level I training with Baron Baptiste and learned so much about sequencing and assisting. She loves assisting and believes human touch is an integral part of the practice. What started as flexibility training to balance cardio and weight training, has led to this awareness of the breath, the mind and the body, as one, and no two days are the same. Several years ago she stepped out on her own to experience something different when she discovered a love and passion for fly fishing as it takes you to beautiful, calm places but forces you to focus. She is a confident, compassionate woman, and mother, who truly loves serving others. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/christy001/support

Life isn't always as easy as we'd like it to be.  We will face difficult chapters in our lives where things feel like they're crumbling, breaking down, or falling apart. Peculiar seasons where everything seems to just go wrong and the solutions feel out of reach. It's not impossible to gather the courage to march through these challenging seasons and even take a lesson or two from them. Following the launch of her most recent book, I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet, I interviewed Shauna Niequist, one of my favorite writers, who is wise beyond her years. Shauna understands that the truly abundant life isn't one that is gained by external markers of success. Rather it is about mustering up courage to forge ahead even when our lives are falling apart. In this episode, my guest: Shauna Niequist, shows you how you can find a silver lining even when things don't go your way. You'll discover the power behind viewing the world and yourself with compassion in difficult times so you don't get overwhelmed. Listen in…. Show Highlights Include: How even an abandoned project can be a blessing in disguise that prepares you for new opportunities (and sharpens your skills). (08:55) How Shauna got the title for her book ‘Present Over Perfect' and how you could adopt the lesson behind it to savor the important seasons in your life. (11:55) The ‘suffering Olympics' mindset you must get rid of that causes us to judge other people's pain (and keeps us from sharing ours). (18:28) Why adopting the right level of transparency for your audience keeps you and your readers safe (without having to lie about your height). (23:20) How zooming out and taking a broader perspective of being part of something bigger than yourself helps you navigate new environments. (28:13) Interested in coaching with Brilliant Balance? Hey friend! Do you find yourself still reeling from the extraordinary changes we've experienced over the past two years in one way or another? (My hand is raised over here for sure!) Today, I'm bringing back one of my favorite episodes from 2022 - the amazing  Shauna Niequist ! I brought this conversation back from the archives because I don't know about you, friend, but this book and Shauna's message still feel relevant to what's going on around me right now. I hope you also find value in listening to this one once again with me. In this episode, Shauna and I take a deep dive into how pain can make us tender, demand less of the world, and show us the good even in the face of what has been lost. We also talk about how seasons of significant loss can act as catalysts to significant transformation in our lives. Our pain doesn't define us; what we do with it does. You truly don't want to miss this one, my friend! Shauna Niequist is the New York Times bestselling author of Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine, Savor, Present Over Perfect, and her latest book, I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet. She is married to Aaron, and they live in New York City with their sons, Henry and Mac.  Listen in to hear all about: The concept of finding your next self. The importance of taking care of ourselves (and how to cultivate a desire to fight for our health!). How to live lightly and be a person who is easily delighted.   Favorite quotes: ~~If you feel overwhelmed by the mess that your life has become, don't try to go through that alone.  ~~I need to not listen to the voices that are telling me who to be, I need to get quiet enough to listen to the voice deep inside of me to see what she has to say.  ~~We don't change when we are feeding ourselves a steady diet of shame and abuse. We change when we anchor ourselves in love and self-esteem - That's what gives us the courage to make changes. ~~I want to walk through life not dragging around these resentments, grudges and complaints. I want to live with a sense of freedom, with a lot of space inside myself,  inside my heart for possibility for the present and the future instead of feeling like I am dragging my past behind me like an anchor. ~~I want to maintain the capacity to be easily delighted. I want to be a person for whom joy comes easily and frustration is harder to come by. ~~Pain can tenderize you and can make you demand less of the world and can show you what's good even in the face of what's been lost. She shares her experience with failure, the power of visualization, how to prioritize, the truth behind feeling scared and so much more. You're going to want to keep coming back to this episode to soak in all the wisdom she has shared with us today.   Episode Summary:  Lori Gasca walks us through her journey of creating a co-working space for women, what inspired her to build one, the challenges she faced along the way, and also some insider tips on how you can get started in this industry.   Main Takeaways: Sometimes your failures end up teaching you way more valuable lessons than your successes. Involve your family in your goals so they can cheer for you as you move forward. Don't focus on doing a lot of things, focus on doing them well. A healthy level of fear is an indicator that you're doing something big. Some form of accountability is really important when it comes to running your business. Things to keep in mind when setting up a co-working space: It needs to be in a location that gets traffic. You need to have flexibility in the structure of your co-working space. Build-in private office areas and conference rooms. Also, have a kitchen and break area. A minimum area to get started would be about 1000-1200 square feet.   Fun Facts About Lori Gasca: Some of her favorite books are Present Over Perfect by Shauna Niequist and The Best Yes by Lysa TerKeurst.   Resources:    Connect with our Business Coach Lani Jackson: https://lanijackson.com/ The Happiness Trap by Dr. Russ Harris Movie About Emotions - Inside Out by Pete Docter Find Lori Gasca: Website: https://thegroveworkspace.com/ The Grove Directory: https://www.thegrovedirectory.com/ Worldwide Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/thegrovewomenworldwide Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thegroveworkspace/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thegroveworkspace Book A Space: https://thegrovescheduling.as.me/schedule.php Get the visual experience, watch the videocast for the episode here: https://youtu.be/A7828WEkK1c    Connect With Girija: Website: https://www.gbplaw.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gbplaw/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GBPLaw/   Help us mentor other entrepreneurs through the power of storytelling by rating us and leaving a positive review on Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/law-chat-with-girija/id1528580730   Get the FREE Five Day Legal Audit: https://yourcontractbuddy.com/5-day-free-legal-audit-challenge/   Join Law Chat for Entrepreneurs Free Facebook Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/lawchat   Get Ready To Use Contract Templates At: https://yourcontractbuddy.com/

If you're in a season of chaos, change or loss, this week's episode is a must-listen. Shauna Niequist is here and she's offering up a spark of hope and an extra dose of courage for anyone needing a reminder that even when everything seems lost – peace and goodness are still possible. And who of us couldn't use that reminder right now? Shauna is the New York Times bestselling author of Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine, Savor and Present Over Perfect. Her trademark writing is honest, gentle and loving, and her latest book, “I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet”, is no exception. In this episode Paula and Shauna unpack the heart of the book, which was written during a season of major upheaval for Shauna. They discuss what happened when four years ago Shauna's life in suburban Chicago was flipped upside down, leading her family of four to move to New York City. In making a midlife move and leaving behind the life she had always imagined, Shauna recalls being forced to learn how to “stop romanticizing what was and start embracing what is.” Hear why they made the move, why she says she now realizes it was actually long overdue and how she opened herself up to discover new ways of living when the old ways stopped working. Shauna says one of the hardest changes she was faced with in moving was leaving the church she had always been a part of. She opens up to Paula about the painful process that involved forgiving and apologizing and offers up her empathy and wisdom for those in strained situations who are lacking closure but continue to seek it. Hear why she says “it's ok to not understand it all at once” and how she learned to embrace “the long road back to healing.” Paula and Shauna also discuss how change is simply unavoidable, the importance of taking care of your health in each season and why, through it all, there's power and magic in simply saying, “I don't know… I guess I haven't learned that yet.” Check out Shauna's new book: “I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet” Follow Shauna on Instagram Learn more about Paula's new company CARRY Media™ and sign up for CARRY™ ALL, an essential weekly newsletter for the working mom that drops every Sunday! We all walk through seasons of transition, whether we leave something behind by choice or it was chosen for us. Life after a disruptive event or during life transitions can feel like “starting over” just as much as a move clear across the country. You may be asking the question, “who am I here?” even in familiar places and routines. Author Shauna Niequist encourages us in what to hold on to and what to let go of, through seasons of loss.  She equips us with three tools for the journey - curiosity, self-compassion, and courage. We discuss how prayer can tenderize an angry heart, and Shauna shares how hanging on to writing and hospitality, even when they felt like impossible disciplines, helped her journey forward through grief and change. Shauna Niequist is a wife, mom, and author to numerous books including, Present Over Perfect, Cold Tangerines, and Bread and Wine. Are you reeling from the extraordinary changes we've experienced over the past two years in one way or another? (My hand is raised over here for sure!) Today, the amazing  Shauna Niequist joins me to discuss her book, I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet, and share her story of finding herself after a tough season. I don't know about you, friend, but this book and her message feels relevant to what's going on around me right now. I hope you find value in it, too.  Shauna and I take a deep dive into how pain can tenderize us, make us demand less of the world, and show us the good even in the face of what has been lost. We also talk about how seasons of significant loss can act as catalysts to significant transformation in our lives. Our pain doesn't define us; what we do with it does. You truly don't want to miss this one, my friend! Shauna Niequist is the New York Times bestselling author of Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine, Savor, Present Over Perfect, and her soon-to-release book, I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet. She is married to Aaron, and they live in New York City with their sons, Henry and Mac.   Listen in to learn more about: The concept of finding your next self. The importance of taking care of ourselves, even a willingness to fight for our health. Ways to live lightly and be a person who is easily delighted. Favorite quotes: If you feel overwhelmed by the mess that your life has become, don't try to go through that alone. We don't change when we are feeding ourselves a steady diet of shame and abuse. We change when we anchor ourselves in love and self-esteem - That's what gives us the courage to make changes. I want to walk through life not dragging around these resentments, grudges and complaints. I want to live with a sense of freedom, with a lot of space inside myself,  inside my heart for possibility for the present and the future instead of feeling like I am dragging my past behind me like an anchor. I want to maintain the capacity to be easily delighted. I want to be a person for whom joy comes easily and frustration is harder to come by. Pain can tenderize you and can make you demand less of the world and can show you what's good even in the face of what's been lost.
