Transformation isn't a straight line — it's a stretch of uncertainty between letting go of who you were and stepping into who you're becoming. In this episode of Your Courageous Life, Kate explores how to navigate that uncomfortable in-between space — the “messy middle” where old patterns are falling away and new ones haven't fully formed. You'll learn why this stage feels so disorienting, how to stop rushing through it, and how to recognize small signs of growth even when it feels like nothing's changing. If you've been questioning yourself or feeling like you're stuck between chapters, this episode will remind you that confusion isn't failure — it's the bridge to becoming.
#763 What happens when your business is working… but suddenly feels harder than ever? In this episode, host Kirsten Tyrrel sits down again with Hope Trory of HopeWorksDesign.com to unpack the messy middle of entrepreneurship — when leads are coming in, clients are paying, and you're suddenly balancing delivery and marketing at the same time. Hope shares how to use client feedback (and their exact language) to sharpen your messaging, improve onboarding/offers, and increase retention — plus why memberships can be co-created without overbuilding. They also dig into the power of simple, reliable systems (not just “shiny” AI tools) to lighten the load, and how to avoid time-sucking distractions like endlessly switching CRMs. Hope wraps by sharing her freebies, including the Accessibility Checklist (a win for accessibility and SEO) and her ACE Marketing Assessment to pinpoint what to focus on next! What we discuss with Hope: + The “messy middle” phase + Balancing leads and delivery + Using client language in marketing + Feedback-driven offer improvements + Memberships without overbuilding + Simple, reliable systems + Avoiding shiny-tool distractions + Automations that save time + Retention before new leads Thank you, Hope! Simplified Marketing | Simplified Marketing Strategies for Financial Professionals
Marketing is rarely clean or perfectly timed. Life happens. Businesses shift. Priorities change. And sometimes the best thing you can do is stop forcing everything to look polished and start moving with what's real. In this episode of Simplified Marketing, I'm talking about the messy middle of marketing, what it actually looks like when life, business, and growth don't follow a neat timeline. In this episode I talk about: Why January didn't feel like a “fresh start” this year and why that's okay What work-life integration really looks like (especially in seasons of motherhood) Why I shifted from agency life back to being a solopreneur The hardest business decision I had to make Why flow, not hustle, is guiding how I build my business and help clients market sustainably If you've been feeling behind, scattered, or unsure how to market consistently while still living your life, this episode is for you. Life in the Making — An Update from Dr. Ashley JovesAfter a brief hiatus, Dr. Ashley Joves is back in the booth with Collin Al-Samarrie. While The Making Of usually focuses on the grit of dental startups, this episode takes a deeply personal turn as Ashley shares the "life" part of the journey—specifically, the challenging season her family has walked through since December. In this transparent and heart-wrenching episode, Ashley opens up about her husband Brian's battle with oral cancer recurrence, the reality of navigating a Stage 3 diagnosis, and the critical clinical lessons every healthcare provider needs to hear.In This Episode, We Discuss:The Return to the Mic: Ashley and Collin share a "This or That" icebreaker to settle back into their rhythm before diving into the "meat and potatoes" of life lately. The "Action Potential" Mindset: Why Brian's "all or nothing" approach to health and life has been both a blessing and a challenge during treatment. The Healthy Patient Paradox: Brian is the "poster child" for health—a non-smoker, fitness enthusiast, and physician who never gets sick. Ashley discusses the shock of finding oral cancer in the one place she never expected: her own home.A Shift in Staging: How a Stage 1 diagnosis in July rapidly evolved into an aggressive Stage 3 recurrence by December, and the emotional toll of receiving that news just days before Christmas. The Power of Clinical Advocacy: Ashley shares a vital lesson on trusting your gut. After an initial biopsy came back negative, her intuition led to a second biopsy that eventually confirmed the cancer. The Treatment Path: A deep dive into the "Kitchen Sink" approach—choosing a combination of chemotherapy and immunotherapy (Pembrolizumab) to fight the tumor's progression before opting for invasive surgery. The Reality of the "Messy Middle": From the physical toll of chemo rashes and weight loss to the emotional weight of telling their children, Ashley and Collin discuss the raw reality of being a "soldier" through trauma.A Note of Gratitude: Ashley and the entire team want to thank this community for the overwhelming outpouring of prayers, messages, and support. The Art of The Pivot It happens to the best of us. The calendar is set, the mic is hot, and then the notification pops up—a last-minute cancellation. This week on A New Direction, I faced a choice: scramble to replay an old hit or walk the walk. I chose the latter. This unexpected gap in the schedule wasn’t a setback; it was a perfect metaphor for what we discuss on this show every week. It was a clear sign to talk about the one skill that separates the successful from the stagnant: The Art of the Pivot. If I had to adjust my direction on the fly, it seemed like the perfect time to teach you how to do the same. How do you know when it's time to change course? We often wait for a catastrophe to force our hand, but the real signs are much subtler. In this episode, I break down the red flags you might be ignoring, specifically the “Sunday Night Dread”—that physical rejection of your current reality—and the “Competence Trap,” where being good at your job actually becomes the cage that keeps you from being great. We also have a hard conversation about why your jealousy of others is actually a roadmap disguised as envy. Recognizing these signals is the first step out of the drift and into the driver’s seat, and start your pivot Identifying the problem is easy; navigating the transition to pivot is where most people quit. I call this the “Messy Middle”—that terrifying space between letting go of the old trapeze bar and catching the new one. In this solo session, I share the specific tool kit you need to survive the gap, including shifting your mindset from “How do I do this?” to “Who can help me?” and conducting “15-Minute Experiments” to test the waters without drowning. You don't need to burn the ships to make a change; you just need a better strategy to handle the uncertainty. Finally, we move from information to execution. I am not interested in you just listening; I want you moving. I'm issuing a “24-Hour Challenge” to every listener with three specific options to get you started on your pivot. Whether it's sending a “scary email” to a mentor or making a micro-commitment, I'm asking you to take one concrete step today. A “New Direction” isn't a destination you wish for; it's a decision you make. Tune in to hear the full breakdown, and let's turn this unexpected solo show into your pivot. Dr. Maya Shankar experienced devastating identity loss twice. First, a sudden injury ended her dreams of becoming a professional violinist; later, repeated miscarriages shattered her vision of motherhood. These losses forced her to confront how deeply she had tied her self-worth to specific roles and imagined futures. Drawing from cognitive science and human psychology, she learned to redefine her identity beyond self-imposed labels. In this episode, Maya explores the psychology of change, revealing why we experience “identity paralysis” when unexpected changes occur, and how we can use that to our advantage. Meghan Joyce, CEO of Duckbill, says people who see AI as completely deflationary are "only seeing half the picture." She points to the pricing pressure that go into data centers and talent behind them. Maghan later notes her key takeaways from this year's Consumer Electronics Show and the quality of life improvements she sees coming from tech at the conference. She notes headwinds ahead for a "messy middle" of AI, but expects long-term promise. ======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Text Kristen your thoughts or feedback about the showWhat if the hardest part of building a business isn't the beginning… or the end — but the middle? In this episode, I'm sharing a powerful lesson that hit me in the middle of a long, sweaty run while training for my upcoming half marathon. My instructor introduced the concept of No Man's Land — the point in a long run where you're too far from the start to feel excited, but too far from the finish to see the payoff. And honestly? It felt exactly like solopreneurship. We talk about:Why the “messy middle” is where so many business owners get stuckThe mindset shifts that help you keep going when motivation dipsWhy discomfort doesn't mean you're doing something wrong — it often means you're growingHow working smarter (not harder) becomes essential as your business growsThe systems that help reduce mental load and create breathing room againAnd to kick off the new year, I'm excited to be partnering with 17hats on a giveaway designed to support solopreneurs in this exact season. One winner will receive a one-year 17hats membership (open to new and existing users), plus a 60-minute 1:1 session with me to help you figure out the best place to start. We all love a good before-and-after photo but what no one shows you is the middle. The messy, frustrating, emotional part where progress feels slow, the scale fluctuates, and self-doubt creeps in.In this episode of Candidly with Coffee, we talk honestly about the messy middle of fat loss, the phase where most people quit, even though they're actually doing things right. From mindset struggles and unrealistic expectations to comparing yourself to highlight reels online, this conversation pulls back the curtain on what real transformations actually look like. What you'll learn:✔️ Why fat loss is never linear and why that's normal✔️ What scale fluctuations really mean during a cut✔️ Why the middle phase feels mentally harder than the beginning✔️ How comparison kills momentum and confidence✔️ What real progress looks like when results aren't obvious yet✔️ How to stay consistent when motivation fadesIf you've ever wondered, “Why does this feel so hard even though I'm doing everything right?” , this episode is your reminder to keep going. We love a good strategy here at Entrepreneur School, but what happens when the only plan is to just… wing it?Honestly, this is one of the main reasons I started this show—to have real, unfiltered conversations about what it actually takes to build a business and a family at the same time. And let me tell you, it's never a perfectly executed 5-step plan.Today, I'm talking to Jessica Lamb, host of the Mama Making podcast and founder of Collabs Creative. She's in the thick of it with a young son, and she gets brutally honest about operating without a roadmap, ditching the comparison game, and redefining what success even means. This episode is a permission slip to let your journey be messy. We talk about everything from leveraging ADHD and procrastination to your advantage, to the complicated feelings that come up when your partner is the primary breadwinner. If you've ever felt like you're making it up as you go while everyone else on Instagram has it figured out, this one's for you. You'll learn:How to embrace flexibility as a superpower when your schedule is dictated by sick days and nap times. Why working with your unique brain (procrastination and all) is more effective than forcing someone else's systems. The truth about comparison culture and how to put on “blinders” to stay on your own path, at your own pace. How to redefine your value beyond the dollar amount you bring in (because your contribution is so much more than that). The strategic power of starting small to build a sustainable foundation without burning yourself out.Why your version of success is the only one that matters—whether that's hitting seven figures or making it to the school field trip.

Creating Organizational Cultures That Actually Work In this episode, Michael and cultural anthropologist Jitske Kramer dive deep into the heart of organizational culture. Michael shares a story from a startup he supported, where a crystal clear sense of purpose created unity, loyalty, and a genuine feeling of belonging. Employees stayed because they felt connected to something bigger than a job description. Jitske expands on this by highlighting how leaders shape culture through the behaviors, values, and norms they model. She stresses that culture is never an accident. It is a series of daily choices and conversations. When leaders fail to engage with their teams or invite them into meaningful decision making, organizations lose clarity and people lose their sense of belonging. Both Michael and Jitske agree that leaders miss countless opportunities to build trust simply because they are not intentionally engaging with their people. Transformative Leadership and the Power of Human Connection Michael brings up a powerful metaphor involving an orchestra conductor to show how communication and knowledge flow can transform the relationship between leaders and their teams. When the conductor shifts from directing to connecting, the entire ensemble transforms. The energy changes. People take ownership. Collaboration becomes natural rather than forced. Jitske builds on this idea by contrasting transactional interactions with transformative ones. Transactional moments keep the lights on, but transformative moments build the future. She emphasizes the need for what she calls campfire conversations. These are the unhurried, human centered discussions where ideas form, trust deepens, and innovation actually has space to emerge. They conclude that the most successful organizations are the ones that prioritize human to human connection over rigid systems and corporate scripts. Finding Clarity in the Messy Middle of Change Jitske introduces her latest book, Tricky Times, which explores liminality. Liminality refers to the messy middle stage of change when the old story no longer works and the new story is not yet formed. She describes this phase as uncomfortable but deeply necessary. She explains that societies worldwide are wrestling with a kind of midlife crisis. People are questioning the expectation of nonstop economic growth and the conflict it creates with environmental and social realities. In these liminal spaces, power dynamics shift. Cultural identities get rewritten. Leaders are challenged to redefine what truly matters. Michael shares how timely these insights feel, especially given the current political climate in the United States and abroad. He highlights how difficult but essential conversations shape whether we move forward with intention or stay stuck in old patterns. Leading with Courage in Tricky Times Jitske describes the leadership challenges she writes about in Tricky Times. She warns against leaders who act like tricksters, constantly pushing boundaries without offering guidance or stability. True leadership requires bold honesty, grounded decision making, and the willingness to enter uncomfortable conversations. She emphasizes that balanced leadership is essential. Leaders must be willing to question assumptions, tell the truth about what is working and what is not, and invite their organizations into deeper reflection. Tricky Times has become a bestseller in the Netherlands, and Jitske is sharing its message with influential political leaders who are navigating uncertainty on a national scale. The book is available as an e-book on Amazon and offers a grounded, human centered framework for leading through cultural transformation. Jitske Kramer is a renowned Dutch corporate anthropologist who translates real-world lessons from communities around the globe into practical tools for modern workplaces. She travels the world to learn from traditional healers, innovators, random passers-by, and everyday communities, studying how humans bond, lead, and resolve conflict — and brings those insights into the boardroom. Her latest book, Tricky Times (a #1 Dutch bestseller), explores what it takes to lead in “the messy middle” — those uncertain in-between phases where old systems break down before new ones emerge. With 25+ years of experience, she has shaped transformation for Nike, Unilever, Calvin Klein, and Philips, authored 9 bestselling books (150,000+ copies sold), and spoken alongside Simon Sinek, Amy Edmondson, Yuval Noah Harari on stages like TEDx and Workhuman Live. Jitske's sharp, funny, and “aha”-filled style makes anthropology highly accessible for leaders facing change, culture challenges, and transformation. Topics: The messy middle: Leading effectively through uncertainty and liminal times The real drivers of company culture: Rituals, symbols, and hidden power structures How to “think like an anthropologist” to sense change and spot unseen dynamics The difference between formal power and cultural power — and why rank-awareness is critical for leaders What tribes can teach today's organizations about handling dilemmas and conflict More about Jitske: Founder of HumanDimensions, a pioneering training company that helps organizations strengthen teamwork and company culture. Featured in the Patterns of Life documentary series, in which she traveled to India as an anthropologist. Former Fellow at the Oxford Leadership Academy; holds a master's degree in cultural anthropology from Utrecht University. Other books by Jitske: Building Tribes, Wow! What a Difference, Work Has Left the Building, Jam Cultures, andThe Corporate Tribe (which won the prestigious 2016 Management book of the Year Award). Take a look at Jitske's keynotes, other public speeches, TV appearances, and writings. To get a sense of Jitske, here's an appearance she made on The Culture Lab podcast, talking about the making of a corporate tribe and how to effectively deal with diversity in a team.

Get Goat Wise | Homestead Livestock, Raising Goats, Chickens, Off-grid living
Regenerative agriculture can feel like a buzzword, a badge, or a list of practices you're supposed to follow. But in real life, and especially in a challenging climate, regeneration is a process of learning, comparing ideas against your own environment, testing small changes, observing what your land and animals are telling you, and adjusting as you go. In this episode, I'm sharing the decision-making loop we use on our ranch with both goats and cattle, and why I see multi-species grazing as a long-term benefit—even though it adds complexity in the beginning. I also walk through our big-picture goal of reducing supplemental hay by extending the grazing season, and the real constraints we have to work within, like limited moisture, fragile pasture, frozen ground, predators, and wildlife pressure. You'll hear how we're approaching water infiltration and soil building in a dry climate, why we're testing straw bales to slow runoff first, and what we've already observed from years of intensive rotational grazing, chicken tractors, and summer bale grazing. I also explain why certain popular practices don't translate well to goat management in our conditions—and how we adapt without abandoning the principles. In This Episode, I Cover: Why regenerative agriculture is a process, not a destination The decision-making loop: Learn → Compare Context → Clarify Goals → Test → Observe → Adjust → Repeat How to learn from other producers without copy-pasting their practices Shifting from “this won't work in my climate” to “how do these principles apply here?” Why nature is the best teacher and how to use observation as your guide Our big-picture goal: reducing hay by extending spring and fall grazing The resource bottleneck in dry country: water infiltration and water-holding capacity Why soil cover and organic matter are critical in moisture-limited environments Using straw bales to slow runoff as a low-risk way to test water flow paths What we've observed after 5 years of intensive rotational grazing The forage improvements we've seen from chicken tractors and summer bale grazing Why winter bale grazing is risky/not feasible for us right now (electric netting in frozen ground, elk pressure) A winter feeding strategy that works within predator pressure and management reality A soil-building feeding approach we're preparing to test (and why snow cover matters) Why we're not buying a no-till drill right now—and what we want in place first Why starting with annuals can make sense before investing in expensive perennial seed Key Takeaways: Regenerative practices aren't universal—principles transfer, but application must fit your climate and animals. Nature is the best teacher: observation turns theory into real management decisions. Start with clear goals and real constraints, then break big objectives into small, testable steps. Moisture-limited land requires prioritizing water infiltration, water-holding capacity, and soil cover. Testing small and reversible ideas (like straw bales) can prevent expensive mistakes. Multi-species grazing is a long-term benefit, but it adds complexity—especially in the beginning. “Not yet” is a valid answer on tools and investments; timing matters. Progress comes from repeated cycles of learning, testing, observing, and adjusting—not from perfection. Welcome back to The Don't Cut Your Own Bangs Countdown: Best Lessons of the Year — your cozy December rewind of the conversations that cracked me open, cracked me up, or came back to whisper, "Hey… you needed to hear that again." This week we're celebrating two big themes we ALL lived through this year: 1. Learning in real time (aka: The Messy Middle) 2. The courage to say a brave, wholehearted "No" You'll hear moments from my solo cast on "Tech Sweats" (yes, the kind where you curse at software and question your entire identity), plus one of my favorite conversations of the year with CityMom founder Janine Bobmeyer. Her story of burnout, truth-telling, and redefining success is one of those episodes you feel in your chest. A few moments you'll hear: • "Learning is rarely graceful. It's… sweaty." • "A 'no' spoken from truth is always a 'yes' to something better." • "Being in the middle of a mess doesn't mean you're doing it wrong — it just means you're in the middle." Stephen, the first Christian martyr, was an ordinary man chosen to serve the early church community. When faced with false accusations and hostility, he responded with grace and boldness, maintaining a Spirit-filled attitude even under pressure. His peaceful demeanor and willingness to speak truth demonstrated that our response doesn't have to depend on others' attitudes. Even as he was stoned to death, Stephen forgave his persecutors and saw Jesus standing to welcome him home. His faithful witness planted seeds that would later contribute to the conversion of Saul, who became the apostle Paul. Stephen's story teaches us to be faithful where we are, fix our eyes on Jesus during difficult times, and trust that God will use our faithfulness in ways we cannot imagine.

Maybe some big things ended and you haven't quite settled into the new things. This is the Messy Middle. The In Between. Or, as I like to call it, the chrysalis (explained later). It Can Be Uncomfortable Here Painful, even. The Messy Middle is just that - messy. There are so many logistics and emotions and thoughts moving around at the same time, often making us feel confused. Most of life isn't a launch or a finish line. It's the middle, mundane, conflicted, unglamorous, and that's exactly where God grows our maturity, resilience, and trust.Jennie names the “messy middle” we all live in: between starting and celebrating, between intention and fruit. Looking at scripture, parenting moments, and the behind-the-scenes of launching Gather25, she reframes the middle as holy ground. This is where perseverance forms character, trust replaces control, and faithfulness becomes the measure of a life with God.Resources & Links:REGISTER TO HOST AN IF:LOCALListen to more episodes: Apple Podcasts | Spotify | YouTubeLearn More About JennieFollow Jennie on social:InstagramFacebookJennie's new book "The Lie You Don't Know You Believe" is available for pre-order NOW - GRAB A COPY HERE!
