Stephanie converses with the ever-engaging Bob Goff today. Known for his ability to intertwine whimsy with profound spiritual truths, Bob challenges us to take active, heartfelt actions instead of merely understanding faith on an intellectual level. Bob's message is simple: live an actionable, authentic faith filled with whimsy and boundless love. His new book "Catching Whimsy" encapsulates this dynamic approach, prompting us to explore faith with fresh eyes and a vibrant spirit. Quiet, modest acts of service hold immense power, says Bob. In a world often driven by recognition, he reminds us that God appreciates small beginnings and gradual growth. This applies to everything - our faith, relationships, and professional commitments. His emphasis on gentleness and patience serves as a reminder that impactful change often starts with unassuming, everyday actions. "Catching Whimsy," the title of Goff's new book, suggests that whimsy surpasses mere superficial happiness. It is a strategic, intentional approach towards life and faith that echoes childlike simplicity and wonder. Bob illustrates whimsy using metaphors like catching bubbles, tying it back to a pure form of faith that urges us to perceive the world uniquely. Bob Goff advocates for the practice of transitioning from "Bible study" to "Bible doing," urging us to embody our faith through deliberate actions. Central to his message are calls for service to others, such as feeding the hungry and welcoming strangers. Sharing experiences from teaching at San Quentin penitentiary, Bob also reflects on the deep humility demonstrated by the inmates—a quality that influences his own faith journey. His stories underscore the value of surrounding oneself with individuals who truly embody empathy and authentic faith. This principle extends to difficult situations where empathetic communication is key. Bob emphasizes the importance of steering clear from clichéd responses, replacing them with deeper, meaningful connections. Bob reframes suffering by mentioning the teachings of Paul and James, highlighting that through adversity, endurance and character are built, eventually leading to hope. This perspective encourages a focus on personal growth rather than dwelling in arguments or seeking validation. Authenticity is paramount in our relationship with God. He encourages believers to present their true selves, inclusive of doubts and questions. This authenticity is also about running our own race and allowing others to do the same, all while fostering genuine conversations with God - simple, everyday conversations flavored with the "salt" of prayer. For those inspired by his words, the challenge is set—embrace whimsy, embark on a journey of authentic living, and become the "convincing proof" of a lively, active faith. Publish Date 2-24-20It sounds counter intuitive when you sat it but letting your kids take risks and fail is actually a really good parenting move on your part! This week's topic was inspired by Episode 71 "We Have To Try" and Josh's comment that he wanted to give their daughter Riley permission to take risks even if those risks mean she has to experience falling down, a lot. His reasoning was he knew how much she would benefit from the growth that is happening for her in those high risk moments. It's Risky Business in parenting but without risk there is no growth... the reward is in the risk. Brittany shares her experience working with College students and recognizing the difference between those whose parents gave them a chance to take risks and fail and ones with parents whose mission was to clear away every obstacle. Publish Date 4-22-19Are you saying things to your kids over and over again till they know what you're going to say before you even say it? Hopefully, what they're hearing from you over and over again are words of love and encouragement rather than constantly being corrected or reprimanded. Why is it so easy for us to be quick to criticize or correct our kids? It seems like we need to be more intentional about speaking words of affirmation and encouragement. For some reason, this does not come as natural to us. Wouldn't it be great if we told our kids we loved them so many times and in so many ways that they actually become second nature to us and our kids would just expect it? Today we are revisiting Ian's interview with celebrated Author, Speaker Bob Goff and his wife Maria. Bob is an Enneagram 7 and Maria is a 9. And even though this episode provides a lot of insight into the worldview of a 7 and 9, the show today is really more about marriage and how two very distinct personality types can create a climate in which difference isn't merely tolerated, but rather is celebrated. Now, even if you're not married, you'll still love this episode because it paints a marvelous picture of how two very different Enneagram types, regardless of the kind of relationship they have forged, can come together to form a bond in which the two become more than the sum of their individual parts. It's a great model. Be sure and check out Bob’s newest book, Everybody, Always: Becoming Love in a World Full of Setbacks and Difficult People, and Maria’s book, Love Lives Here. 5 Leadership Questions Podcast on Church Leadership with Todd Adkins
In this episode of the 5 Leadership Questions podcast, Todd Adkins and Daniel Im are joined by energetic couple, Bob and Maria Goff. You probably know Bob from is book Love Wins, and Maria from her book Love Lives Here. During this lively conversation, they discuss the importance of caring for people, being available to others, and how to keep your faith simple. BEST QUOTES “Keep your faith simple and keep your relationships simple.” “I’ve always looked to the people who are out in front of me as well as looking over my shoulder at who is coming up behind me.” “The people in front of me give me hope for what is to come and the ones behind me keep me motivated to keep going.” “We need to keep our eyes on our own paper. We need to figure out who we are, and how God has made us and wired us.” “What happens in leadership is that you become less and less available, and you become less and less imitators of what Jesus did.” “I tend to be in proximity to people rather than being present.” “Be all there, wherever you are.” “I haven’t had a quiet time in 20 years. Mine are super loud.” “If you want to find out what’s actually true, listen to Jesus.” “She is not trying to be like me. I’m not trying to be like her. We are trying to be like Jesus.” “How is your life working for the people around you?” “If someone give you advice that rhymes, run.” “Surround yourself with people who make you feel hungry in your faith, strong in your resolve, and more available to your family.” RECOMMENDED RESOURCES Love Lives Here by Maria Goff Love Does by Bob Goff Restore International
Maria Goff is my guest for The Happy Hour #145. Maria has made a career out of loving her family and neighbors, raising her children, and turning houses into homes. She is married to national bestselling author of “Love Does” Bob Goff. Together, they operate Love Does, an organization dedicated to helping kids in conflict areas around the world including Uganda, Nepal, India, Iraq, and Somalia. The Goffs have three adult kids who are starting families of their own. They live in San Diego, where they continue to dream about and plan new adventures yet to be had with their growing family. Maria’s first book, Love Lives Here, was published in earlier this year. In our conversation, we chat about raising children and how fast the little years fly. Maria shares about her book and how she works to make her home comfortable, inviting and a place of peace. She talks about how she views her role in supporting her husband, Bob, in his very successful career. And finally, Maria shares about the fire that consumed their property in Canada and how they are moving forward. I know many of you are probably familiar with Bob Goff, but I just know you're going to fall in love with Maria. She was such a joy to chat with and I was so encouraged by her and her wisdom in being a helper to her husband, parenting and taking on new challenges. {You can listen to the showHERE. Anna LeBaron escaped from a polygamist cult when she was 13. Her new book, The Polygamist's Daughter details what it was like to grow up in such an abusive and traumatic environment. Anna was child 40-something of 50 to polygamist cult leader Ervil LeBaron. She grew up in an incredibly unstable environment and felt safe almost nowhere. She was abused physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally and was being groomed to continue in the polygamist practice from a very young age. After she escaped, she saw grace in her sister and brother-in-law who protected her and provided a safe place for her to begin to heal. She attended a small Christian school that helped her ease into life outside of the cult. She is thankful for her five children, the siblings who have continued to support her, and all of the things that lined up for her book to become a reality. Pursuing healing, wholeness, and freedom has required a tremendous amount of courage. As Anna says, "healing is a process. Healing is a miracle." Healing from abuse and trauma is a life-long journey and Anna encourages victims of all kinds of abuse and trauma to ask for help and to seek counseling. Beginning today with a huge shout out for local singer/songwriter and author, Deanna Wood, who wrote and sings the song "No More Secrets" for the community site, Ourcityonahill.net. Below are links to the full song, as well as Deanna's testimony as shared with Our City. Deanna is also the author of "Unintended Target", a Christian mystery and suspense novel. Check it out here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0163BAWK2/ref=cm_sw_su_dp https://twitter.com/dlwoodonline "No More Secrets" by Deanna Wood https://www.facebook.com/OurCityOnaHill/videos/567070513430438/ "I Will Rejoice" by Deanna Wood http://www.ourcityonahill.net/i-will-rejoice-by-deanna-wood/ Kaitlin and Katie have another great morning chatting over coffee and inviting you into their conversation. "Stop and smell the wildflowers" is a topic that came from a recent excursion Kaitlin and her fiancé had. It is a celebration of the spontaneous moments in life and the importance of not missing the sacred sidelines "on the way". FINDING MEANING IN THE MARGINS! http://www.mentonewildflower.com "Enjoy a great meal in our hippie-chic dining areas while being entertained by talented local musicians! The Wildflower Café's dedicated staff treats you like family and is committed to providing you with an enjoyable dining experience." Life is a journey, a long windy road, you might even think you are lost when you start out, it will be exhausting at times SO make sure you take the time to pull over! Life is so much more than just "trying to get there." Check out Naomi's blog as she shares her stories of faith, courage and adventure along the Appalachian Trail and wherever God chooses to take her! http://naomimoseley.com Kaitlin and Katie share some "good reads" as well: "Wild" by Cheryl Strayed http://www.cherylstrayed.com/wild_108676.htm One woman's story of finding healing in the "hike." Katie shares her new reading plan: Keeping a non-fiction, fiction and craft(as in books on writing or creativity) book going at all times. Her "good reads" for now are: "Beautiful Outlaw" by John Eldredge (non-fiction) https://www.amazon.com/Beautiful-Outlaw-Experiencing-Extravagant-Personality/dp/1455525707 "How to Write Short" by Roy Peter Clark (craft) https://www.amazon.com/How-Write-Short-Craft-Times/dp/0316204358 "Stories of Art and Artists" -Everyman's Pocket Classic (fiction) https://www.amazon.com/Stories-Artists-Everymans-Pocket-Classics/dp/0375712496 Additional books mentioned and ones you "gotta get that": https://annvoskamp.com/thebrokenway/ http://lovelivesherebook.com (Maria Goff) http://rebekahlyons.com/updates/youarefree Katie also shares a podcast, The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey, that she listens to regularly and an interview you will not want to miss with Julie Manning: http://jamieivey.com/happy-hour-128-julie-manning Katie adds a couple of words to her vocabulary tool box and generously shares them. Her "interesting word search" stemmed From "How to Write Short": Clark shares the writing short secret of the "effect of a single elegant word- a grace note- in an otherwise straightforward composition." Definition of xenophobe one unduly fearful of what is foreign and especially of people of foreign origin (used in a sentence: America began as a melting pot of immigrants but appears to be turning into a crock pot of xenophobes.) Definition of marginalia: marginal notes or embellishments (as in a book) "Marginalia" was the perfect bow to wrap up their conversation. Leaving margin means we leave room to take notes, to notice, to stop and smell the wildflowers! As always, the hope behind this podcast is that it will encourage, maybe make you laugh, cry, and relate, and then go out and start a conversation of your own with someone from a different generation. We need each other; we have much to glean from one another and we are most definitely #bettertogether!
