Luke Taylor and Katie Grotzinger are two masochistic movie-lovers! Listen to them break down bad movies over Sunday brunch!
Luke Taylor & Katie Grotzinger
Luke and Katie welcome Ned O'Connor to the show to talk about this stellar ensemble cast of leading ladies starring alongside the GOAT himself and those 2017 Patriots. Want more Ned? Who doesn't. Check out his youtube channel here --> https://m.youtube.com/@Ronnoco_Den
Luke and Katie take a break from "bad movies" once a year and give you a list of favorite flicks from the past 12 months! Does it match your list? Did we snub something? Spielberg, maybe? It's not personal, I promise.
"The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause" (2006) // Dir. Michael Lembeck Wanna see Santa stressed about work, neglecting his pregnant wife, and dealing with his in-laws visiting the North Pole (along with his ex-wife and her husband & kid), all while Jack Frost tries to steal the famed red hat and coat? We got a flick for you!
Anna and the Apocalypse (2017) // Dir. John McPhail Holiday movie? Zombie movie? Musical? Check, check, and check! This culty scottish flick is just the jolt of gory yuletide cheer!
All About Steve (2009) // Dir. Phil Traill Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper are a pair of absolute stars. Hollywood legends! Beloved! This flick is not beloved. Unjustly? We'll be the judge.
"Barb Wire" (1996) // Dir. David Hogan This flick features Pamela Anderson in the lead role of a movie based on a comic book. Talk about ahead of her time! If you want action, romance, and "Casablanca" set in a dystopian 2017...your time has come.
J-Lo kicking ass. Need we say more? No, but we sure as hell decided to. This movie's got us pumped and full of opinions. Did Taylor find this flick so entrancing that she stole the entire plot for a creative writing assignment as a child? Listen and find out.
"The Doors" (1991) / Dir. Oliver Stone A band you love to hate? Or a movie? Was that the point? What is the point? Why does Luke dig the flick so fucking much? Perhaps, that's the biggest question of all. Let's dig in, brunchers!
It's the one time of the year where we talk about the good stuff. Not that the bad movies on our show are all bad, but these are pretty widely acknowledged to be good...which isn't the norm around here. Enjoy!
"The Karate Kid Part III" (Dir. John G. Avildsen) In a world where Cobra Kai is the toast of the town, it only made sense for Katie to invoke the crowning jewel of the Larusso trilogy. Please note: we recorded this episode in January 2022. So if our shit sounds dated...that's why. Actually never mind. We don't owe an explanation. Enjoy!
Nobody does holiday cheer like Bad Movie Brunch and what better way to honor this mashup of Jewish and Christian holiday cheer than frequent collaborator Jake S. Weisman! Enjoy!
"Small Soldiers" (1998) // Dir. Joe Dante Why aren't there more family movies that are also terrifying? Jaws was rated PG for goodness sake! Is Small Soldiers to blame? Well, it didn't help anything did it?
"Josie and the Pussycats" (2001) // Dir. Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan You wanna talk about cult classics? This flick stands shoulder to shoulder with the best of 'em. Epic soundtrack. Killer script. Wildly funny. Insanely memorable. Impossibly of its day, yet somehow timeless????? We could gush and gush and gush and gush. And we kinda do!
"The Gay Deceivers" (1969) // Dir. Bruce Kessler We tackle a controversial comedy flick from the tail end of the Sixties about a pair of fellas posing as lovers in order to dodge the Vietnam War. If that doesn't entice you, literally nothing will.
"Rough Night" (2017) // Dir. Lucia Anello In this edition, we come to the conclusion that killing a stripper may not be that funny even if it's a bachelorette and her gal pals that did the deed. Did you like this flick? Did you love Hacks? This is the episode for you!
Luke, Katie, and Taylor join Jake & Jack on Filmstuffs LIVE! Listen to us chop it up about our podcast and all the filmcentric shit that's fit to print! You can watch on Facebook, Youtube, & Twitch at Jellyroll Chicago!
"Hook" (1991) // Dir. Steven Spielberg Did you know this flick was directed by Spielberg? Luke sure as hell didn't! (And he calls himself a filmmaker...)This early 90s gem is stuffed to the gils with Robin Williams acting his enormous heart out. Is it too long? Sure. It's very long. But with Mr. Williams gone from the world, thank goodness we have an overly long take on Peter Pan to enjoy forever and ever.
"Mortal Kombat" (1995) Dir. // Paul W. S. Anderson "Mortal Kombat" (2021) Dir. // Simon McQuoid What else is there to say? When we hear those fateful pair of fighting words uttered, our 90s kids juices get flowing! Strap in for a Bad Movie Brunch double feature as we discuss how both iterations stack up.
"Oliver & Company" (1988) // Dir. George Scribner Disney's animated adaptation of Oliver Twist helped usher in a renaissance of hits as the house of mouse moved into their successful string of 90s hits. But this story of orphaned animals and a homeless guy who's in deep with the mob didn't really rub critics the right way. You be the judge. Better yet, let us.
"The Lake House" (2006) // Dir. Alejandro Agresti We spend the weekend on the water with Keanu and Sandy as they fall in love through time and space. Or, time and lakes. Also the mailbox is magical? We don't actually touch on that concept as much as we should.
"The Master of Disguise" (2002) // Dir. Perry Andelin Blake The three of us summon all the energico in our bodies and fire off about this incendiary little kids(?) movie. There's an unforgivable brown face scene featuring our main character. The main character is supposed to "become another person" but he keeps on doing weird impressions of recognizable celebrities whereas his father and grandfather truly become the characters they're impersonating. The Turtle Club scene? Oh yeah, that shit still works like gangbusters.
"Home on the Range" (2004) // Dir. Will Finn, John Sanford In this edition, we go to a home where the buffaloes roam and a group of animals rally together to save their farm! The Pros: It looks gorgeous! The Cons....well, just take a listen.
"Zack Snyder's Justice League" (2021) // Dir. Zack Snyder Sweet hallelujah! Zack Snyder's vision finally realized. Luke's wishes fulfilled. Listen as Luke gushes and Katie and Taylor are very supportive.
"A Night at the Roxbury" (1998) // Dir. John Fortenberry What is love? Baby don't hurt me. Don't hurt me. No more! (That's it. That's all you need to know. Happy listening).
Tom & Jerry: The Movie (2021) // Dir. Tim Story What's more classic than cats and dogs beating the living shit out of each other? Yeah, we couldn't think of anything either. Hang out with Luke, Katie, and Taylor as we dig into the surprisingly charming Tom and Jerry feature flick on HBO Max and currently in theaters (if you wanna risk it) ((no judgement)) (((some judgement)))
TRIGGER WARNING: The movie we're discussing has scenes with sexual abuse. We didn't know that going in but we felt it was important that we acknowledged and addressed it. "40 Days and 40 Nights" (2002) // Dir. Michael Lehmann
"Rock-a-Doodle" (1991) // Dir. Don Bluth, Gary Goldman Katie pulls an absolute banger out of her back pocket in a Luke-less edition of Bad Movie Brunch! What we have here is a live action / animation hybrid that features a chicken (rooster?) who aspires to be an Elvis impersonator in Vegas. There's other stuff happening too, but that part is pretty astonishing on its own merit.
"Remember Me" (2010) // Dir. Allen Coulter In this edition, get to spend time gazing upon one of our favorite actors to ever grace the silver screen....ROBERT PATTINSON in a real controversial flick from his vast filmography. He's sad! He's angry! He's so morose! His dad is rich and life is tough for him! You won't believe the twist ending. (The ending is pretty fucking offensive. We don't like it). We're joined by special guest Aedan Wright to dig into this sumptuous little rom-dram! Enjoy!
"Because I Said So" (2007) // Dir. Michael Lehmann In this edition, Taylor brings a lovely story about a mom and her daughters. Are they a little too close? Yes. Do they talk about climaxing? Oh yeah. Check it out!
"Wonder Woman 1984" // Dir. Patty Jenkins In this edition, Katie and the two Taylors are whisked away to Paradise Island...briefly...for a sequence that doesn't really tie in that much with the rest of the movie. But then we head to the 80s! Where we...spend a lot of time with Pedro Pascal...look! Just listen to the episode. Okay?
Hot of the presses is Luke, Taylor, and Katie's favorite stuff they watched in the year of our lord 2020. In a year that was largely without feature films and theatergoing experiences, we had to resort to tv shows too. Deal with it.
"New Year's Eve" (2011) // Dir. Garry Marshall Goodbye, 2020. Bid that awful year a fine adieu with Luke, Katie, and movie juggling more plot lines than you can shoot a confetti popper at! All you need to know is...it's NYE in NYC and people are very concerned with the ball dropping at midnight.
"Surviving Christmas" (2004) // Dir. Mike Mitchell How could there be a Ben Affleck movie that we didn't know existed? Let alone a CHRISTMAS AFFLECK MOVIE SET IN ILLINOIS? We must be slipping in our old age! This movie was wiped from the face of the planet, but Amazon Prime Video gave us the gift of streaming this flick into our homes for the holidays.
"Jingle All the Way" (1996) // DIr. Brian Levant Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit's Turbo Time! Can Howard secure that damn Turbo Man doll? Will Phil Hartman hook up with his wife? Why is Sinbad committing mail fraud and terrorism? All these questions aren't really answered in this episode, but we adore the damn movie!
"Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas" (1997) // Dir. Andy Knight In this edition, the holiday vibes continue as we transition in Christmas Movie Season. It's a time of bad plots and passable storytelling for the greater good of yuletide joy. Keep in mind, everything thing that happens this movie is official Disney canon. Weird, right?
"Friendsgiving" (2020) // Dir. Nicol Paone In this edition, Taylor schools Luke on some improv (and is possibly drunk, we're not sure). Katie brings another turkey-day-centric flick to the fold and keeps the show on its rails at all costs.
"A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" // Dir. Bill Melendez and Phil Roman In this fall edition of BMB, we urge you to look past the 100 percent Rotten Tomato score and look deeper into this particular tv special. Or, Apple TV special, as it were. Sick burn!
"Xanadu" (1980) // Dir. Robert Greenwald In this edition, Luke is an innocent bystander as Katie and Taylor discuss the movie that inspired the Golden Raspberry Awards (better knows as the Razzies). Buckle up for safety.
"Hubie Halloween" (2020) // Dir. Steven Brill In this extra spooky (not really) episode, we're talking about Halloween. Hubie Halloween, that is. If a bot watched every Happy Madison movie, this would be the result. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily.
"Grandma's Boy" (2006) // Dir. Nicholaus Goossen Katie, Luke, and Taylor unpack the surprisingly wholesome stoner comedy from a bygone era that really wasn't that long ago. And we say "wholesome" knowing full well Jonah Hill sucks on a boob for quite some time in this flick.
"Baby Geniuses" (1999) // Dir. Bob Clark With Luke off the grid for the week, Katie takes over hosting duties! Taylor Taylor is back on the show to chop it up with Katie about some smart children with dubbed dialogue.
The Kissing Booth (2018) // Dir. Vince Marcello Katie, Luke, and returning guest Taylor (YAY!) chat about the Netflix Original that spawned two sequels and counting. Step into the Kissing Booth with the BMB Crew as we wonder whether filmmakers have ever met the teenage characters they're writing about.
Pearl Harbor (2001) // Dir. Michael Bay This is a podcast that will live in infamy. At the request of this week's special guest, Mr. Tom Hush, we discuss Michael Bay's World War II love triangle that seemingly aspired to be the next Titanic. (Spoiler: It wasn't).
Fluke (1995) // Dir. Carlo Carlei Life is ruff in this talking canine tale! Fluke is a flick that deals with heavy ass themes like mortality, reincarnation, murder, and vengeance. It's also a film for children. Samuel L. Jackson is in it too.
We Are Your Friends (2015) // Dir. Max Joseph In this edition, Luke and Katie want to know if we'll ever be better than this! Do you know much about EDM? We sure as hell don't, but we know Zac Efron is daddy.
Quest for Camelot (1998) // Dir. Frederik Du Chau In this edition, we draw our swords and take to the fabled land of Camelot! There's griffins, weird cgi, and just a few more songs than we necessarily needed.
In the Army Now (1994) // Dir. Daniel Petrie Suck on this a one tiiiiiiiiiiiiime! Back in the 90s, Disney inked a three picture deal with Pauly Shore and cinematic excellence was born.
National Treasure (2004) // Dir. Jon Turteltaub Get in, loser! We're going treasure hunting. Listen along as Luke and Katie weigh the pros and cons of this Nic Cage Classic from the house of mouse!
Juwanna Mann (2002) // Dir. Jesse Vaughan To say this movie doesn't age well is an understatement. It's wrought with harmful and offensive stereotypes, lazily disguised as a romantic comedy with some basketball thrown in for good measure. Trans Lives Matter. Watch Pose on Netflix instead. Watch Disclosure on Netflix instead.
"On the Line" (2001) // Dir. Eric Bross In which Luke and Katie are shocked by another early 2000s time capsule in this flick featuring N*Sync frontmen. Who's your favorite member of the group? We're a couple of Lance Bass fanboys over here.
Daredevil Director's Cut (2003) // Dir. Mark Steven Johnson // Luke & Katie address the sucky state of the nation in 2020 and get horny with the Daredevil Director's Cut. If you LOVED the Daredevil Netflix series, bad news! This movie is nothing like it.
