There was a time in the mid-nineties when Pauly Shore was a very big deal. Rising to fame as a VJ on MTV, he parlayed his alter-ego “The Weasel” into unlikely big-screen stardom. His first movie, Encino Man, introduced the world to Brendan Fraser as a caveman, and Shore was such a hit in it that he got his own solo comedy Son in Law (opposite a young Carla Gugino), which was a money-maker. His follow-up, IN the Army Now, also made money, but that would be the end of Shore's short-lived reign as a star. His next two movies, Jury Duty and Bio-Dome, would be flops, and a TV show, Pauly, would be cancelled after five episodes. Clearly, Shore's reign at the top was short-lived.Yet, there's still something very likeable about “The Weasel,” mainly because Shore has always had a sense of humour about his place in pop culture. We couldnt not talk about when Jeff played alongside Rick Allenof Def Leppard as he was getting to grips with playing his new Electronic Drum Kit after losing an arm in a horriffic accident. And of course, this leads us on to his time with the mighty Status Quo and his debut album with the band - In th Army Now. Jeff also shows us in the video a beautiful 1979 engraved Ludwig Drums Black Beauty Snare Drum, this was gifted to him by Rick Allen and was the snare drum used by Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich on their classic Ride The Lightening Album!!Jeff - Thank you so much for giving your time up so generously, it was a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable conversation.

Alright, now that we got that out of the way... we are kicking off April Fool's Month by reviewing Bio-Dome! The very same film that has a whopping 4% on Rottentomatoes and 1/100 on Metacritic. How is this a horror movie? Let me phrase it this way: two developmentally disabled young men are held captive by doomsday preppers who starve them, neglect them, then ultimately try to literally blow them away! Pauly Shore (MTV, In the Army Now, Son in Law) plays Bud, a moron who can lick his own back using tantric yoga. Pauly co-won a Razzie Award with Tom Arnold in 1996 for his performance in this film. Stephen Baldwin (Usual Suspects, Sharks in Venice, Flintstones Viva Rock Vegas) plays Doyle, a role which his brother Alec warned him would ruin his career. We contend it was not this movie that killed his career, but rather his stint on Ty Murray's Celebrity Bull Riding Challenge where he nearly died and broke both a rib and his shoulder blade. William Atherton (Ghostbusters, Die Hard, Real Genius) is a goddam treasure. Have you ever seen another character actor who can instantly bring a sneer to your face? This man is the professional wrestling heel that every movie needs and he is wonderful in the film as Dr. Noah Faulkner. Initially, the good doctor is trying to save the world, then after faltering and failing, he decides to destroy his creation, and everyone in it. This film features Tenacious D, Jack Black and Kyle Glass. If you hate the rest of the film, just daydream if those two were the stars of the film, instead of the Weasel and the father-in-law of Justin Bieber. We also discuss Cube, by Vincenzo Natali, as well as its sequel and prequel. This film is basically the antithesis of Bio-Dome, making its money back over 10 times over. We also detail Natali's short film, which was essentially a proof of concept for the film, which is available on YouTube. This week's "Hidden Track" is by Lame Genie. Pepper’s de The Beatles y el verano del amor en Inglaterra o el festival de Monterrey en EEUU, 1968 vislumbró como el fin del pop y la música tomó impulso para llegar a su momento cumbre, la etapa que va de 1969 a 1973, donde todo, todo, todo fue posible. 2001: Una odisea en el espacio, de Stanley Kubrick. Aquí empieza el futuro. Las cosas públicas estaban calientes en la época: asesinatos de Martin Luther King y de Robert Kénedy, mayo del 68, Nixon y su carnicería de Vietnam, golpe de estado en Chile (financiado por EEUU), matanza de estudiantes por parte de la policía en la plaza de Las Tres Culturas, en Mexico, la Primavera de Praga, abortada por los tanques rusos. Bueno, pues con este caldo de cultivo, la música, como no podía ser de otra manera, (llevaba días intentando meter esta frase), seguía adelante. Muchos de los famosos grupos del 64 al 68 se habían disuelto, si bien sus componentes no habían abandonado la música, ya que volvieron con nuevos bríos, sobre todo gracias a las nuevas tecnologías. Los sintetizadores y la calidad de las grabaciones hicieron que los músicos iniciaran una nueva andadura con sus obras. El single seguía teniendo validez pero apareció un nuevo soporte: el álbum concepto. Una obra con sentido de inicio a fin, y de la que, casi nadie, quería extraer singles. Un ejempo: In a gadda da vida, de Iron Butterfly. La canción dura 17 minutos. Tranquilos, no la oiremos toda. Como decíamos, la llegada de las nuevas tecnologías, concretamente del sintetizador, cambiaron incluso la composición de los grupos, habituados a la clásica formación de cuatro o cinco miembros, con gloriosos excepciones como Cream o el propio Jimi Hendrix Experience. Así que, sobre 1969, la incorporación a las bandas de los sintetizadores, dio origen a grupos como Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Yes o Génesis, entre otros. Vamos a escuchar un corte de Emerson, Lake and Palmer en un directo en el que podremos oír con claridad la versatilidad de los sintetizadores. Y esto es otro breve corte de otro de estos grupos pioneros, Yes. Aunque tenemos que decir que había grupos, como Queen, que en los años 70 mencionaban en sus discos literalmente “disco grabado sin el uso de sintetizadores” para que la gente valorase su habilidad instrumental y admirara la calidad de sus grabaciones. A partir de este momento, más o menos 1968, empezó a dominar la audiencia el rock puro y duro, tan duro que se acuñó, para definir este estilo, el término heavy (pesado). Con estos mimbres, se tejió el gran grupo de la década Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page era en esos momentos, junto a Jimi Hendrix y Eric Clapton, el guitarrista más famoso de Inglaterra (bueno, y del mundo). Junto al bajista John Paul Jones, el batería John Bonham y el cantante Robert Plant completaron la más poderosa formación rockera de los años setenta. Fue Keith Moon, batería de los Who, quien los bautizó como Led Zeppelin (zepelín de plomo) y con este nombre debutaron el 15 de octubre de 1968 Si el primer LP, Led Zeppelin I, cambió la música, el segundo, Led Seppelin II, llegó a número 1 directamente y pasó cuatro años en las listas. Más tarde llegó “Stairway to Heaven” y se convitió en un himno del rock. Solo en el 69, Led Zeppelin vendió 5 millones de discos y sus giras americanas fueron tremendas. Todo era gigantesco. La imagen de Page tocando su Gibson de doble mástil o la de Plant cantando con el torso desnudo se hicieron icónicas. En el Tampa Stadium de Florida, batieron el récord de los Beatles de asistencia a un concierto, con 56.800 personas. Record que batirían muchas más veces. Led Zeppelin generaba más noticias que ninguna otra banda en su tiempo. Volaban en un avión convertido en hotel de lujo, crearon su propia compañía, Swean Song Records, y sus actuaciones (con solos de 20 minutos por cabeza) atraparon a toda una generación y dejaron huella en las siguientes. Todo se acabó el 25 de septiembre de 1980, con la muerte de John Bonham. Por esta época proliferaron bandas rockeras sin concesiones en su sonido. Una de ellas, Steppenwolf, aportó a la historia todo un himno generacional: “Born to wild”, Nacido para ser salvaje. Otra de las bandas inglesas más importantes y que con su carisma y buenas maneras habría de mantenerse durante las siguientes tres décadas fue Status Quo Con más de cincuenta años de historia desde su fundación en 1962, Status Quo ha tocado una infinidad de subgéneros musicales. No obstante, son conocidos por su boogie rock, que se ve en canciones simples con ritmos de 4/4 y por el uso de tres acordes. Para mantenerse vigentes durante todos esos años, la banda exploró ciertos elementos de las tendencias musicales que surgían en cada década. A partir de 1970, recuperaron en gran medida la proyección directa y auténtica del rock and roll de Chuck Berry, siendo considerados como un exponente de este estilo en Europa. A pesar de ello, la banda fue durante bastante tiempo uno de los grupos más criticados de la escena británica. Muchos críticos —principalmente ingleses— consideraban de manera unánime que su música era excesivamente simple. Sin embargo, otras críticas apuntan a que su música los convirtió en una banda vanguardista dentro de la corriente psicodélica, y otros expertos han elogiado su autenticidad y pureza musical. Lo cierto es que Status Quo es prácticamente el único grupo musical inglés que ha sido capaz de soportar el paso del tiempo y las modas musicales. Aquí los tenemos con un clásico del rock and roll Su In the Army Now, una canción claramente antibelicista, logró un importante éxito y aceptación en varios países europeos e incluso su significado revolucionó a los jóvenes soviéticos, quienes la utilizaron como himno ante la rígida política de ese país. Esto provocó que cuando la banda se presentó en dicho país en 1988 —durante 14 noches en el Estadio Olimpiski de Moscú— las autoridades soviéticas controlaron cada uno de sus conciertos, ante la posible revolución de los jóvenes moscovitas. Fueron muchos, muchos los grupos que en esta onda y en esta época tuvieron cierta relevancia. Johnny Rivers, por ejemplo… O Ralph McTell, éste en una onda un poco más folck… También hubo espacio para lo más comercial, algo como este Baby come back de The Equals. Los primeros grandes conjuntos de la transición emergieron a lo largo de 1968. The Band, el grupo que había estado con Bob Dylan en su resurrección tras el accidente de moto, y que Martin Scorsese inmortalizó en el documental realizado con motivo de su concierto de despedida, “The last waltz”, aportó temas del calibre de este The Weight Otro de esos grandes grupos, aunque siempre a la sombra de John Fogerty, fue Creedence Clearwater Revival. Todos estos grupos que hoy están pasando por nuestro programa de una manera superficial, retratando la época en la que nacieron, merecerían un tratamiento más profundo. Bueno, pues lo tendrán en futuros programas monográficos. Hoy nos despacharemos de la Creedence con su super-éxito Susie Q. Nos vamos, se nos acabó el tiempo. Como siempre, nos quedan en el tintero gente importante como Jetro Tull, Ohio Express, un invento de la TV, los Archies y el regreso del rey: Elvis Presley. Con estos mimbres, se tejió el gran grupo de la década Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page era en esos momentos, junto a Jimi Hendrix y Eric Clapton, el guitarrista más famoso de Inglaterra (bueno, y del mundo). Junto al bajista John Paul Jones, el batería John Bonham y el cantante Robert Plant completaron la más poderosa formación rockera de los años setenta. Fue Keith Moon, batería de los Who, quien los bautizó como Led Zeppelin (zepelín de plomo) y con este nombre debutaron el 15 de octubre de 1968 Si el primer LP, Led Zeppelin I, cambió la música, el segundo, Led Seppelin II, llegó a número 1 directamente y pasó cuatro años en las listas. Más tarde llegó “Stairway to Heaven” y se convitió en un himno del rock. Solo en el 69, Led Zeppelin vendió 5 millones de discos y sus giras americanas fueron tremendas. Todo era gigantesco. La imagen de Page tocando su Gibson de doble mástil o la de Plant cantando con el torso desnudo se hicieron icónicas. En el Tampa Stadium de Florida, batieron el récord de los Beatles de asistencia a un concierto, con 56.800 personas. Record que batirían muchas más veces. Led Zeppelin generaba más noticias que ninguna otra banda en su tiempo. Volaban en un avión convertido en hotel de lujo, crearon su propia compañía, Swean Song Records, y sus actuaciones (con solos de 20 minutos por cabeza) atraparon a toda una generación y dejaron huella en las siguientes. Todo se acabó el 25 de septiembre de 1980, con la muerte de John Bonham. Por esta época proliferaron bandas rockeras sin concesiones en su sonido. Una de ellas, Steppenwolf, aportó a la historia todo un himno generacional: “Born to wild”, Nacido para ser salvaje. Otra de las bandas inglesas más importantes y que con su carisma y buenas maneras habría de mantenerse durante las siguientes tres décadas fue Status Quo Con más de cincuenta años de historia desde su fundación en 1962, Status Quo ha tocado una infinidad de subgéneros musicales. No obstante, son conocidos por su boogie rock, que se ve en canciones simples con ritmos de 4/4 y por el uso de tres acordes. Para mantenerse vigentes durante todos esos años, la banda exploró ciertos elementos de las tendencias musicales que surgían en cada década. A partir de 1970, recuperaron en gran medida la proyección directa y auténtica del rock and roll de Chuck Berry, siendo considerados como un exponente de este estilo en Europa. A pesar de ello, la banda fue durante bastante tiempo uno de los grupos más criticados de la escena británica. Muchos críticos —principalmente ingleses— consideraban de manera unánime que su música era excesivamente simple. Sin embargo, otras críticas apuntan a que su música los convirtió en una banda vanguardista dentro de la corriente psicodélica, y otros expertos han elogiado su autenticidad y pureza musical. Lo cierto es que Status Quo es prácticamente el único grupo musical inglés que ha sido capaz de soportar el paso del tiempo y las modas musicales. Aquí los tenemos con un clásico del rock and roll Su In the Army Now, una canción claramente antibelicista, logró un importante éxito y aceptación en varios países europeos e incluso su significado revolucionó a los jóvenes soviéticos, quienes la utilizaron como himno ante la rígida política de ese país. Esto provocó que cuando la banda se presentó en dicho país en 1988 —durante 14 noches en el Estadio Olimpiski de Moscú— las autoridades soviéticas controlaron cada uno de sus conciertos, ante la posible revolución de los jóvenes moscovitas. Fueron muchos, muchos los grupos que en esta onda y en esta época tuvieron cierta relevancia. Johnny Rivers, por ejemplo… O Ralph McTell, éste en una onda un poco más folck… También hubo espacio para lo más comercial, algo como este Baby come back de The Equals. Los primeros grandes conjuntos de la transición emergieron a lo largo de 1968. The Band, el grupo que había estado con Bob Dylan en su resurrección tras el accidente de moto, y que Martin Scorsese inmortalizó en el documental realizado con motivo de su concierto de despedida, “The last waltz”, aportó temas del calibre de este The Weight Otro de esos grandes grupos, aunque siempre a la sombra de John Fogerty, fue Creedence Clearwater Revival. Todos estos grupos que hoy están pasando por nuestro programa de una manera superficial, retratando la época en la que nacieron, merecerían un tratamiento más profundo. In fact, for the first time since 2005 (a year when nothing bad happened), the Army failed to meet its fiscal year target. Andy Dick: I met Andy Dick several years ago. We did the movie In the Army Now together, and recently he was featured in my Vegas Showtime Special, Vegas is My Oyster. I definitely caught Andy on an off night during this interview. When you guys take a listen, you'll hear why. HaHaHa Lucas Dick is Andy Dick's real son. I met Lucas several years ago when I did In the Army Now with Andy, Lucas was just a baby then. Lucas is a great young, up and coming stand up comic. And Lucas is actually the father in the relationship with Andy. Classic episode.
