This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the penultimate episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we are pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, we hit the road in the year 2000, with two films featuring people looking to clear their name. It's Joel & Ethan Coen's folk musical comedy O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? and Peter & Bobby Farrelly's dark comedy ME, MYSELF & IRENE. In O Brother, Where Art Thou?, George Clooney stars as Ulysses Everett McGill, a criminal who convinces two fellow convicts (Tim Blake Nelson and John Turturro) to break out of prison to seek treasure he left buried from a previous job. Turns out he really just wants to stop his wife (Holly Hunter) from getting remarried. Along their journey, they meet a young black musician who sold his soul to the devil, and cut a hit record together. They also meet a cyclops, sirens, and countless others in this unique adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. With more brilliant cinematography from Roger Deakins, a tremendous soundtrack featuring loads of old folk, gospel, and bluegrass standards, and quality performances all around, this is another winner for Joel and Ethan Coen. Can they ever be stopped? The Farrelly Brothers can attempt to do so with their road comedy Me, Myself & Irene, starring Jim Carrey in his first film with the Farrelly's since Dumb and Dumber. Carrey, who was just coming off starring in back-to-back serious roles (The Truman Show and Man on the Moon) returned to the gross-out comedy as Charlie Baileygates, a Rhode Island state trooper who develops a split personality. Charlie must escort Irene (Renée Zellweger) to New York, where she is wanted for hit-and-run. The pair are then forced to go on the lam to avoid Irene's mafia-connected ex-boyfriend, whilst Charlie is also trying to suppress his new alter-ego, Hank. Some of this one holds up, but it is pretty much relying on a very wrongfully depicted mental illness – so take that for what you will. Is it enough to topple the sweet tunes of O Brother? We'll let you decide...Which brother will win Brotherly Love, and be crowned the best brother filmmaking duo of the 90s? Tune in to find out...If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the 3rd episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we are pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, it's all about bowling! For some reason, both of these sets of brothers made bowling movies – and both of them performed pretty badly on release, only to become cult classics. So, we'll be talking about Joel & Ethan Coen's 1998 neo-noir comedy THE BIG LEBOWSKI, and Peter & Bobby Farrelly's 1996 sports comedy, KINGPIN. Which is the better bowling movie? In The Big Lebowski, Jeff Bridges shines in a career role as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski in a tale of mistaken identity, deceitfulness, severed toes, nihilists, White Russians and lots of bowling. After his rug get soiled by a couple of guys looking for money from a millionaire with the same name, The Dude falls down a rabbit hole that feels straight out of a Raymond Chandler novel. This film is damn near perfect. It's funny, has a great story, stellar performances with a supporting cast boasting John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore and John Turturro, a kick ass soundtrack and some insanely good cinematography from Roger Deakins. The Dude Abides. But is it a better bowling movie than Kingpin? Woody Harrelson plays Roy Munson, a young bowler who is just about to make it big, before his rival, Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray doing Bill Murray shit) tricks him into doing con games, which results in Roy's bowling hand getting destroyed. Years later, Roy is an alcoholic with a hook for a hand and no prospects, before he stumbles upon Ishmael (Randy Quaid), a promising young Amish man that Roy attempts to take to the top of the bowling world. It's more of what you expect from the Farrelly's, with some gross out humour, fun 90s soundtracks, and some hit or miss elements. But, it's pretty much the Farrelly's most underrated, and potentially one of their better titles. And, it actually is more about bowling than The Big Lebowksi, it just may look as nice. I mean, Deakins, man...Which brother will win Brotherly Love, and be crowned the best brother filmmaking duo of the 90s? Tune in to find out...If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's Week 2 of the new miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we'll once a month be pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, we'll be looking at two of the biggest films from each brother duo, with Joel and Ethan Coen's Academy Award-winning film from 1996, FARGO, vs Peter and Bobby Farrelly's smash hit from 1998, THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY (we decided to jump ahead to 1998 for Farrelly's so we could pit 1996's Kingpin vs 1998's The Big Lebowski – you know... bowling, dude!)In Fargo, Frances McDormand shines as a pregnant police officer attempting to solve three murders in her jurisdiction, that all lead back to William H. Macy – a car salesman who hires two criminals (Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare) to kidnap his wife for ransom money. It stands as the Coen Brothers' signature film, that inspired a television, and introduced the world to the endearing Minnesota accent. With a stellar cast, incredible performances, top-notch writing and direction, and brilliant cinematography, it'd be hard for most films to beat it.So, how did There's Something About Mary compare? Ben Stiller plays a guy who's looking for the girl that got away – the simply perfect, Mary, played by Cameron Diaz in her breakthrough role. When he hires a private investigator (Matt Dillion) to track her down, the investigator also falls for Mary, leading to a silly love triangle. We've got balls being zipped up in trousers, dogs being drugged, NFL Superstars getting tackled by normal men playing intellectually challenged men, and old lady boobs. It's a Farrelly Brothers film... At least there is the wonderful Jonathan Richman to sing us through the film.Which brother will win Brotherly Love, and be crowned the best brother filmmaking duo of the 90s? It's making sure the world he creates on-screen looks like the one he lives off-screen.   Bobby joined host Jay Ruderman to talk about what casting has looked like over the course of his career, what it was like to shoot Champions, and where he hopes to see Hollywood in the future.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, we present a brand-new miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we'll once a month be pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. Both sets of brothers saw some of their best films come out between 1994 - 2003, and we'll be taking a look into this small window of time to see who is the best of the brother filmmakers (I mean, we know who it is... it's just for fun. You know... for kids?)In the debut episode, we'll be looking at two films from 1994, with Joel and Ethan Coen's first big budget studio film, THE HUDSUCKER PROXY, vs Peter and Bobby Farrelly's debut feature, DUMB & DUMBER.Tim Robbins, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Paul Newman lead the Coen's The Hudsucker Proxy, about a mailroom clerk who is plucked from obscurity to be the president of a major corporation in order for the scheming board to take over full control of the company's stock. A throwback to the screwball comedies of the 30s and 40s, the film failed at the box office, but became a big cult hit. But, is the fast-talking comedy enough to take on the Farrelly's breakout first feature? In Dumb & Dumber, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are two moronic buddies who take a briefcase across the country to return it to a woman they think lost it, getting mixed up in a kidnapping plot and a whole load of other shenanigans. It's incredibly dumb, but still packs in plenty of laughs 30 years later. The film was the crowning achievement in Jim Carrey's massive run of 1994 (which also saw him star in Ace Ventura and The Mask) that would see him become one of the biggest stars of the 90s. Which brother will win Brotherly Love, and be crowned the best brother filmmaking duo of the 90s? Tune in to find out...If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! ¿Te animas a comprobarlo?

Dana and Tom with guests Christine Duncan and Shane Rogers (Comedian and Host of Midnight Facts for Insomniacs) discuss the romantic-comedy, There's Something About Mary (1998): written and directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly, co-written with Ed Decter and John J. Strauss, score by Jonathan Richman, starring Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller, Matt Dillon, and Chris Elliott.Plot Summary: "There's Something About Mary" is a hilarious romantic comedy that takes a fresh and often outrageous approach to the classic boy-meets-girl story. The film follows the misadventures of Ted Stroehmann, a kind-hearted and love-struck young man, who has been infatuated with Mary Jensen since their high school days. The story begins with Ted's fateful prom night when he plans to take Mary as his date. However, an embarrassing zipper incident leads to a mortifying and unforgettable disaster. Ted's chances with Mary are dashed, and he becomes the laughingstock of his classmates.Thirteen years later, Ted (Ben Stiller), is still haunted by the memory of Mary. His best friend, Dom (Chris Elliott), suggests hiring a private investigator named Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to track her down. However, Pat becomes smitten with Mary himself and decides to manipulate the situation to his advantage. Ted, fueled by his persistent infatuation, decides to take matters into his own hands and also heads to Florida to win her heart. But Ted's clumsy attempts to impress Mary lead to a series of comical and cringe-worthy situations. The film hilariously explores the lengths people are willing to go to pursue their desires, while also shedding light on the absurdity of idealizing someone from afar."There's Something About Mary" is a raunchy yet heartwarming comedy that delves into the complexities of love, attraction, and the hilarity that ensues when reality clashes with fantasy. We took a look at this comedy masterpiece from the mid 90's and were reminded of a time when you could kill endangered species and get away with it. @dgoebel00 on Instagram provided this amazing artwork. Follow him and check out his website https://youtu.be/l13yPhimE3o Synopsis When a gorgeous redhead, Mary (Lauren Holly) leaves her suitcase in the airport, Lloyd (Jim Carrey) makes it his mission to return it to her at her destination - Aspen, California. Lloyd manages to talk his roommate and best friend Harry (Jeff Daniels) into joining him on the trip because, let's face it, “our pet's heads are falling off!” Unbeknownst to our duo of dumb dumbs, the briefcase left by Mary Sampsonite was actually a ransom payoff for her husband's safe return from the ominous arms of Nicholas Andre. As Harry and Lloyd are tailed across the country, an interesting The Man Who Knew Too Much scenario takes place. Everyone gets more stupid than they bargained for. Review Dumb and Dumber is one of the funniest modern day movies ever made, and in my opinion, one of the best comedies of all time. Peter Farrelly & Bobby Farrelly wrote and directed this and while they are accomplished and obviously talented, their real lightning in a bottle was the casting of Jeff and Jim.  The magic within Dumb and Dumber lies in Jeff and Jim, two grown-ass-adult-males acting like actual 6th grade children. Keeping straight faces and horsing around in ways that would make every mother in America roll their eyes so hard that their retinas detach.  Obviously, Jim Carrey is at his absolute peak in this movie, but Jeff Daniels comedy chops are absolutely crushing. And the pair of them together, fully understanding the magic of this concept of two adults so stupid that it hurts is what takes the whole thing into the top echelon of comedy gold. Watch Dumb and DumberBuy or Rent on AmazonClick here to Rent The pacing and clear storyline of this movie help to bolster it amongst it's competition, because it's hard to get the pacing of a comedy movie right.  While the last half hour of this is pretty weak by comparison to the rest of the movie, it's pretty slim pickings on comedy movies that end strong. This has a better ending than most. It blows my mind that this is the same Jim Carrey that did one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my entire life - The Number 23. Score 10/10

We are just days away from the 95th Academy Awards, so there's no better time to discuss whether "Everything Everywhere All At Once" can follow its huge night at the SAG Awards and take the Oscar for Best Picture. Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan are all up for Oscars in the acting categories and the Daniels — Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — are also nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. But before we dive into that, Bruce Miller gives his thoughts about the new movie "Cocaine Bear" and Terry Lipshetz discusses the new season of "The Mandalorian," getting caught up with "The Last of Us" and thoughts on Best Picture nominees "The Banshees of Inisherin" and "Everything Everywhere All At Once." REVIEW: It doesn't take a cartel to see how goofy 'Cocaine Bear' is Miller also has an interview with director Bobby Farrelly about his new movie "Champions" starring Woody Harrelson, which opens March 10. Farrelly and his brother Peter Farrelly — also known as the Farrelly Brothers — made a name for themselves with comedies like "Dumb and Dumber," "Kingpin" with Harrelson and "There's Something About Mary." Peter scored big with an Oscar win for "Green Book," which also created time for Bobby to do a solo project of his own with "Champions."  We will be recording our next episode immediately after the Oscars so look for that in the early hours of Monday, March 13. In this episode, we explore the 76th British Academy Film Awards — better know as the BAFTAs — and the upcoming Screen Actors Guild Awards. These are the final two big indicators as to which actors and films might win big at the upcoming Academy Awards on March 12. Bruce Miller shares a story about Tom Hanks' kindness toward a friend, Ke Huy Quan's return to acting with his best supporting actor nomination for "Everything Everywhere All At Once" and whether he'll appear in "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny." He also shares his thoughts about "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania." Terry Lipshetz is excited for the March 1 return of "The Mandalorian" on Disney+ and shares his thoughts on how Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau can pretty much do no wrong with the Star Wars franchise after a shaky reboot with J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson's films. The show wraps with Miller sharing his thoughts on the upcoming Hulu series from Mel Brooks: "History of the World, Part II." The series is a sequel of sorts to Brooks' 1981 film "History of the World, Part I." Also, a program update: There will be a slight delay in our next episode as we have an exclusive interview with director Bobby Farrelly, who will be talking about his newest film "Champions" starring Woody Harrelson. Peter and Bobby Farrelly's most-successful comedy was 27th on the AFI's Top 100 Laughs 23 years ago. It's a movie that stands out on that list because very few of those other grinners go for broke like this does. There's Something About Mary often toes the line (sometimes even crosses it) with wildly politically incorrect material, but it was—and still is---truly funny. Guts were busted in our house for a full 2 hours, even at a lot of the cringe comedy. Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz are a good match, but Lee Evans and especially Matt Dillon steal the movie from those two lovebirds. We weren't as loony about the infamous gross-out gags as others are and Ryan doesn't think the film entirely works. The rampant stalking is a problem, sure, but maybe Stiller & Diaz aren't quite right for these roles? Well, however YOU feel about There's Something About Mary, don't comically struggle to pick up your keys while pretending you have a severe back injury and be careful when you're zipping up your fly as we continue the Month Of Crazy Stupid Love with Have You Ever Seen #492. Big Gulps, huh? Alright...well, why you're here, you might as well get comfy, settle down for a spell, and catch up with old friends. This week's duo is just as offbeat and eclectic: listen as we discuss Jim Jarmusch's 1984 portrait of hipster malaise, the Farrelly Brother's 1994 idiotic odyssey, and the curious connections both films have in depicting the joys and pitfalls inherent to the open road. When he asks for directions, she tells him in an Austrian accent, which he confuses with Australian (SOUND 1). We then see that he's the limo driver. As he drives around the city, we meet Harry driving the dog van giving the dogs food, speeding, and tossing the dogs all over the van. Lloyd arrives at a large house, and annoyingly knocks on the door, Mary answers, and Lloyd is struck. He awkwardly chats with Mary in the limo. Harry arrives to deliver the dogs, and they're covered in ketchup and mustard. Mary tries to tip Lloyd, which he turns down, and he VERY awkwardly hugs her. He tries to hold it together. As Mary walks, shes followed by two nefarious looking characters and they discuss picking up the drop. Mary puts a briefcase down, and Lloyd swoops in and grabs it before the two bad guys can. Harry and Lloyd meet at an apartment building, both looking very defeated, and being followed by the two people from the air port. Harry and Lloyd talk about their days (SOUND 2), lloyd calls Harry a loser for losing his job. The two henchmen knock on the door, and they think it's the gas man, so they bail. The bad guys want to send them a message, so he kills their bird. Lloyd goes to the store, to get the essentials, and ends up getting robbed by an old lady in a scooter(SOUND 3). Back at the apartment they're depressed, and the birds head fell off. Lloyd suggest they go to Aspen. They argue, and Lloyd has a heartfelt moment of being sick and tired of not having anyone. Harry agrees to go, causing Lloyd to cry. The trip begins.  S:-My main issue with this whole movie and the premise is I find it hard to believe there are people ACTUALLY this dumb in the world. I get there are dumb people, but this level of willful ignorance is hard to imagine.-Why didn't the hench people just kick down the door. To get the briefcase, i would have.  On the road, Lloyd tells Harry he made some extra money by selling some of their stuff, including Petey the headless bird... Which we see the head has been taped back on, as the henchmen walk past. They find a note on the door addressed to the "gas man" which enrages them, and they assume Harry and Lloyd are pros and could've been trailing them for weeks to know he's got gas. Harry and Lloyd are eating at a diner when they give a waitress a hard time. Harry then spills some salt, who Lloyd advises to throw some salt over his shoulder, which hits Sea Bass, (SOUND 4) Who then hocks a loogie on his burger. Lloyd hatches a plan, goes to talk to Sea Bass and offers to buy them drinks. He then approaches the waitress and tells her Sea Bass is offering to pay for their bill. When she checks to confirm this, he waves at her, confirming. They take off, and Sea Bass comes running out pissed off. Lloyd tells Harry how he came up with the idea from a movie...and in the movie, they're caught and their throats are slit. Lloyd then has to pee, and finds relief using beer bottles. He fills up 4 four when they pass a cop, who unlike Tucker, is doing his job, and they're pulled over... Harry tells him its a cardigan, but appreciates it anyway. So they stop. The officer asks if they've been drinking, citing the bottles in the floor. He demands they give him one, and he takes a big swig... causing him to spasm, and tells them to leave. A large house in aspen, Mary and her parents, and Nick, a family friend, are discussing how her husband has been kidnapped, and the dropped briefcase was a money drop for the kidnappers. They advise she act normal, go skiing and go to parties. Lloyd has a fantasy, about him and Mary, a cheeky first meeting, Lloyd telling stories with friends, he defends her honor in a restaurant fight, and they kiss next to a fire, as Mary takes off her top, Lloyd sees the headlights of a truck and breaks his fantasy. They stop at a scummy hourly motel, where they're both in a heart shaped tub, and can hear the neighbors banging it out. Lloyd tells Harry if he has some "knockers" he'd be banging him already. It gets a little weird for Harry. Harry tells Lloyd about an ex, Freda Feltcher...and his heartbreak when she left, and he suspected she was seeing someone else. Which Lloyd acts very guilty. The hench-dude is on the phone, in a phone booth, with Nick, discussing who Harry and Lloyd could be and how he wants his money. S:-I remember the first time I saw this when I was younger and didn't know what a boilermaker was. Ha.-I wonder how many times people have tried this trick since this movie came out. It is pretty genius.-Peeing into a beer bottle while sitting has to be REALLY hard.  Joe the henchman hatches his own plan, posing like his car died, and is picked up by Harry and Lloyd. He immediately sees how moronic they are with them playing the "it" game across him and making up rules. I imagine this what it was like for Chris growing up, before they invented Tv and radio. Lloyd then makes the most annoying sound in the world(SOUND 5). They start singing the mockingbird song, as Joe is about to pull his gun and shoot them, when they pull over to pick a hispanic family up, they all sing along. They all stop at another diner, when they share a hot candy and have a severe reaction. Joe calls Nick and mentions he's going to put rat poison in their drinks. When he returns, Harry and Lloyd are shown putting the hot candies on Joes burger. He realizes they don't even know Mary, as he takes a bite of the burger. He has a very bad reaction because of his ulcer. He tells them to get his pills,(SOUND 6) Harry gets what turns out to be the rat poison. He realizes what it is, and dies. Movie investigators who are obviously doing a better job than Tucker are investigating. Harry and Lloyd stop to get gas; Harry chats up a woman also getting gas. Lloyd, using the bathroom sees a note on the bathroom wall, "For Manly Love, be here on March 25th at 2:15am" in Tuckers handwriting... Lloyd looks at his watch as it hits 2:15, someone enters. Lloyd tries to hide, but the door is busted open and he screams as Sea Bass is standing there. Harry keeps hitting on the girl, and accidentally sets himself on fire. As Sea Bass advances to sexually assault Lloyd, Harry barges in, knocking Sea Bass out, and puts his foot out in the toilet, saving Lloyd. Back on the road, Harry is making fun of Lloyd, and Lloyd does not like it. As Lloyd drives, he takes a wrong turn and heads back east towards Nebraska. We see Harry sitting in a field, angry that Lloyd has gone the wrong way. They argue and Harry starts walking home. As he walks, Lloyd comes riding up on a tiny motorcycle the same size as Tuckers old one. He tells Harry he traded in the van for it, straight up, and gets 70 miles per gallon, we get Harrys response: (SOUND 7). A musical montage of them. on the bike as they make it to Aspen. They walk around Aspen, and after trying to look up her name, Lloyd can't remember her last name. They argue and fight, as Harry tries to get rid of the briefcase, and throws it, it pops open and they see it's full of cash. They discuss getting reasonable accommodations and paying it all back with IOUs... They're then shown in the presidential suite, which they take, and pull up in a Lamborghini, full of boxes, and all new clothes. S:-All the smoking in the movie... Very 90's.-The whole bathroom/gay meet up thing and Harry making fun of him afterwards... I'm surprised this movie hasn't gotten canceled yet.-I still to this day will say to myself "woah, jeez... look at the butt on that..." In the hotel room, Lloyd finds a newspaper article about Mary, and that she'll be at a Gala the next day. Que another music montage a-la Pretty Woman, as they are prepped for the gala. They arrive in a horse drawn carriage in now classic orange and blue tuxes, top hats, canes, and ruffled shirts. As they enter, the lady henchman recognizes them and alerts Nick. They continuously make weird scenes, and Harry goes to introduce himself and try to buildup Lloyd and get Mary interested and prepped (SOUND 8). As they chat, Marys step-mom invites Harry to go skiing with Mary, and he doesn't get a chance to tell her about Lloyd. Harry tells him he's got him a date with her tomorrow, and to celebrate, they open a bottle of champagne; which the cork kills one of the owls. Harry is getting ready to go skiing with Mary, having told Lloyd she said she would meet him in the hotel bar. Harry makes an awkward entrance as Lloyd waits at the bar. Harry on the lift, gets his tongue stuck to some frost... obviously he never watched A Christmas Story. Lloyd is in the bar and a woman sits next to him, complaining about her ex-boyfriend. Harry and Mary make a snow man, and have an intense snow fight. Lloyd finds out where Mary lives, AND that we landed on the moon. Chris, what was that day like? Lloyd sees Harry drops off Mary... spawning one of the best gag gifs/memes of all time. At the hotel, Harry and Lloyd chat, and Lloyd makes Harry a laxative drink. At Marys house, it all hits explosively, (SOUND 9) when Mary tells him the toilet doesn't work. Lloyd shows up and tells her he has her briefcase. They go to the hotel to give her the briefcase back, but Nick and the female henchman are in the lobby. S:-How much do you think was in the briefcase to afford the presidential suite, clothes, and the Lambo?-If you found a briefcase full of money, what would you do with it? Depending on how much was in it? Lloyd practices what he wants to say to Mary, but he can't get the words out right (SOUND 10)... like Tucker, desperately wants to make love to a school boy...and we support you and your lifestyle. Mary shoots Lloyd down, but he sees a shimmer of hope (SOUND 11). When Nick knocks on the door and pulls a gun. Harry comes through the lobby, and we see the gas station woman, who calls out to him. Nick orders Lloyd to open the briefcase, revealing all the IOUs, and he's enraged. Harry comes in and Nick holds them at gunpoint. Harry and Lloyd argue and decide to end their friendship. Nick shoots Harry, but hes not hurt and he pulls a gun, and shoots at Nick, but doesn't hit him. Just then the FBI breaks in, arresting Nick and the henchwoman. Marys husband Bobby arrives, and they're introduced. He thanks them and cut to Harry and Lloyd walking, saying the police confiscated everything, when the Hawaiian Tropic bus stops saying they're looking for some oil boys, and Harry and Lloyd very helpfully send them to another town to find some guys to help oil them up. They walk down the road playing the it game, as the credits roll. S:-I like that nick is using a Walther PPK.-The whole FBI using Harry, giving him a gun, bullshit. What if he had killed Nick? Is he a murderer? Why would they give him a gun?  Web: https://theguysreview.simplecast.com/EM: theguysreviewpod@gmail.comIG: @TheGuysReviewPodTW: @The_GuysReviewFB: https://facebook.com/TheGuysReviewPod/ Please, rate and review us wherever you get your podcasts from!! Thank you,-The Guys

Season 2. Episode 4. And here’s the question we want to answer for history: In "There's Something About Mary," when Mary Jensen chose that dorky, neurotic, stalker, Ted Stroemann, over the handsome, confident, entrepreneur, Pat Healy, are we sure that she made the right choice? In the summer of 1998, Peter and Bobby Farrelly released a summer comedy that took the world by storm. “There’s Something About Mary” was not only the most successful gag comedy in over a decade, it celebrated the arrival of Ben Stiller and Cameron Diaz as mega-stars. The world smiled, giggle, guffawed and winced as semen and a scrotum were used as props for hysterical effect. In the end, Stiller’s Ted wins the heart of Diaz’s Mary. But along the way, we can’t keep our eyes off of Pat Healy, played by Matt Dillon. Because the final resolution feels so forced and because Dillon is so astoundingly funny and oddly charismatic, it’s almost impossible not to want to revisit the character and Mary's decision. Join co-hosts Matty Wishnow and Kevin Blake as they reflect on the gargantuan success of the film and focus on Dillon’s most enduring, if unlikely, character. With the help of panelists Judd Wishnow and Christian Anthony, we ask: What’s the deal with Matt Dillion, elite bachelor and collector of Cuban vinyl records? Where does semen rank in the arsenal of hairstyle substitutes in an emergency situation? Was Woogie’s suggestion to Ted to “clean the pipes” before his big date good advice? Did Mary choose right in selecting Ted, or would Pat Healy have been a better match? Along the way, we learn a (very) little bit about Matt Dillon, we learn a lot about 1998 and we uncover the unlikely and unnerving truth about Mary’s choice: Pat never had a chance because Mary ultimately wanted a guy with a broken penis to sit around, eat hot dogs and watch SportsCenter with. Special thanks to Quincy, Gabe, Matt & the entire Blue Duck team for editing and sound design.

This week on On Story we’re exploring two of the most popular movie genres: action and comedy. First we’ll hear from the writers behind massive action hits Deadpool, Gone in Sixty Seconds, and Armageddon. And later, we’ll lighten the mood with a conversation with There’s Something About Mary co-writer and director Bobby Farrelly. Action scenes can be some of the most memorable moments in a film but without a good story to support them they can fall flat. The most intricately choreographed fight sequence or heart pounding car chase is only effective if it furthers the story. Machete writer Alvaro Rodriguez spoke with Gone in 60 Seconds and Armageddon writer Scott Rosenberg, Deadpool and Zombieland writer Rhett Reese, and Hulk writer John Turman about writing effective action scenes at the 18th annual Austin Film Festival in 2011. Bobby Farrelly has spent over twenty years redefining broad comedy. Alongside his brother Peter, the brothers have written and directed cult favorites like Dumb and Dumber, There’s Something About Mary, Shallow Hal, and Me, Myself & Irene. Actor John Merriman spoke with Farrelly at the 23rd annual Austin Film Festival in 2016.

What makes you laugh? Is it the observational stand-up of Louis C.K.? Sketches on Saturday Night Live? Mark Maron’s podcast that you always listen to first before EQ? You see, comedy is subjective. What makes one person laugh probably won’t make another person laugh, and humor is rarely an acquired taste. It’s not like you turn thirty and suddenly like Seinfeld. Well, maybe that’s a bad example. The point is, you either get the joke or you don’t. In the early nineties, The Farrelly Brothers struck gold with a string of blockbusters that seemed to make everyone laugh. Dumb and Dumber. There’s Something About Mary. Kingpin. Outside Providence. Shallow Hal. Fever Pitch. You couldn’t escape their slapstick premises and earnest storytelling that made them the two of the most successful writers and directors in Hollywood. They’ve worked with comic icons like Bill Murray, Jim Carrey, Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Alec Baldwin and Jimmy Fallon, but as Bobby Farrelly, Class of 1977 recently recounted at a Phillips Academy All-School meeting, the brothers had no real movie-making aspirations growing up, and sort of fell into the trade after a few failed ventures in Los Angeles. Upon his first visit back to Andover in forty years, Bobby sat down with Neil Evans to talk the current state of comedy, how to be funny in today’s politically correct climate and what he learned from being kicked out of Andover.
