Episode 1419: Home On The Range
Cowboy hats on, people – the Wilderness Years is taking film journalist Ben Travis and animation academic Sam Summers back to the Wild West, in 2004's Home On The Range. And it marks a major milestone in Disney (and Disniversity) history: the end of 2D animation. Well… for a bit, anyway. As they rock up to the saloon, the duo talk the legacy of ‘Yeehaw Disney', break down how genres are constructed, and discuss Michael Eisner's dramatic exit from his Disney tenure. Plus, Sam reveals his mission to witness every cast member from Cats (2019) in the flesh; Ben becomes desperate for a film titled ‘Cowboy Ghosts'; and Sam signs up for OnlyCows. Hopefully this episode is an udder delight. Next up: Chicken Little Disniversity is brought to you by Ben Travis (@benstravis) and Sam Summers (@samsummers0), with art by Olly Gibbs and music by Nafets. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram at @disniversity. This podcast is not affiliated with Disney. — Welcome to Disniversity, the podcast crash course through the history of Disney's animated classics, with film journalist Ben Travis and animation academic Dr. Sam Summers. Each week, we'll be moving forward in time through the legendary Walt Disney Animation Studios catalogue, watching every feature film in chronological order – from Snow White to Wish. Watch along with us, and listen as we explore each film's historical context, advances in animation and lasting legacy, and talk about how they stand up today.
The trail through the Wilderness Years continues into the American wilds, as film journalist Ben Travis and animation academic Sam Summers discover the true meaning of brotherhood – and bears – in 2003's Brother Bear. Along the way, they discuss a lesser batch of Phil Collins songs; unpick the odd morality at play in the film's depiction of nature; and discover what happens when brothers become bears, bears kill brothers, bears become brothers, brothers kill bears, and every other possible combination of that you could possibly imagine. Plus, there's much talk of those ‘hilarious' moose, Sam gets into the deeply unsavoury questions of animal attraction posed by Brother Bear 2, and we wave goodbye to the straight-to-DVD era. Next up: Bonus special on the straight-to-DVD sequels. Then, Home On The Range! Well...here we are. We all knew it was coming to this. I mean, it's the Disney Playlist. The fact that we had to eventually talk this movie was, frankly, quite obvious. There was no avoiding it, though we sure as heck tried. So, please enjoy our thoughts on this beloved western.

Episode SummaryErin and Rachel venture to the Old West to discuss the oft forgotten 2004 flop Home on the Range. The convoluted plot, juvenile humor, and unsympathetic characters make for a frustrating viewing experience. Most critics and audience members seem to agree this movie would be best put out to pasture. Episode Bibliography#26. A Conversation with John Sanford. (n.d.). On the 41st edition of Pop Goes the Classics, Steve Riddle, Andy Atherton, and Mirandia Berthold saddle up the wagons and head to the Old West as they discuss the 44th film in the Disney Canon, Home on the Range. Join the trio as they discuss: the lack of the Old West being used as a setting for Disney animated features; the solid voice cast for the film; the film's underdeveloped characters; Slim and his yodeling ability; Buck, the overconfident horse; most of the other characters being under utilized; the final climax of the film; whether the film would've been better as a short or an animated series and whether this is the worst film in Disney history. So join Steve, Andy, and Mirandia as they continue their trek through the Disney Animated Films.
This week we celebrate the 20th anniversary of "Home On The Range". Is this film a hidden gem? Why did it underperform? Is this the most star-studded cast yet? All of that and more this week on Monoreel Radio.

There's definitely no deer or antelope playing here.
In the last proper episode of 2023, Christian, Will, and newcomer-to-the-show Skyler Queen descend upon Home on the Range - one of Disney's last and least-loved traditionally animated films.
In a lot of ways, Lincoln Heights, Ohio, sounds just like any other suburb. If you walk around town, you'll hear kids playing outside the local elementary school. You'll hear the highway that takes commuters down to Cincinnati. At the woods on the edge of town, the birdsong is delightful. The town feels calm and peaceful - at least, until the gunfire starts. Most weekdays, it begins in the morning, and lasts through the afternoon. Sometimes it goes past sundown, and occasionally into the weekends. Once the shooting begins, it comes in rapid-fire waves throughout the day. People say it makes it hard to focus or relax, and those who work the night shift say they can't sleep. The noise of gunfire isn't from street violence. It all comes from an open-air gun range that's owned by the Cincinnati Police Department.Home on the Range

A place where youth are given a second chance and find hope. Learn how Home On The Range is aiding troubled youth. Plus what hidden fees to beware of when booking hotels... And there is a new Monopoly out in time for the holidays. This is Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with the radio show The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in the Outdoors & Western Lifestyle! Episode 151 Details Fall is upon us now and if like Tigger & BEC, you are too trying to soak up all that fall brings which includes fall fishing. They have been fly fishing for pan fish and BEC is practicing more in hopes of eventually going fly fishing for trout. If you have a place they need to visit for such a trip, please share! NEWS BEARS ENJOY KRISPY KREME DONUTS Anchorage, Alaska may be a likely place for bears to live in the surrounding wilderness, however did you know they are fans too of Krispy Kreme Donuts? Recently a mama bear aka a sow, along with her cub were caught red-handed devouring fresh tasty donuts. A Krispy Kreme delivery driver delivering baked goods, left the door to the van open only to return to find the Mama bear and her cub raiding the van! Local law enforcement was able to chase the bears away using loud sirens. HOTEL TAXES, WATCH YOUR BILL! Some hotels have been adding surprising additional ‘incidental charges' to the hotel bill that may surprise you. Incidental Charges or sometimes called even an extra “hotel tax” or “resort fee”, are additional expenses guests may have thought were included in the hotel stay. The hotel deems these items or amenities as those that are beyond the basic room rate or standard room rate. For example, the charges could include pool use, minibar usage, parking fees, internet access as well as now we have experienced charges for daily housekeeping. Every hotel is different, but with trips to Vegas for the upcoming Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) or booking holiday travel over Thanksgiving and/or Christmas, we want all advised. The reason for the incidental charge(s) is that hotels claim to be suffering tight margins in the hospitality industry thus putting these previously absorbed costs back on the consumer. So there ya have it, beware of Hotel Hidden costs and check your bills carefully upon booking and at checkout. FREE FOOD SAMPLER ABUSER Many of us who have visited stores giving out free samples of some treat, may have at least once in our life or may be guilty of being an abuser of said Free Food Samples. Costco may be curbing some of that as news was released, by The Takeout, that those who are huge fans of grabbing the freebies or feel it is part of their reason for a membership may be in for a surprise if this hasn't happened already at your local location. Costco is distributing free samples at some locations using self-serve sample kiosks, and the reason behind the change is Labor Shortage. Human product demonstrators can cost the company upwards of $15/hour and there are not a lot of people applying for the jobs. Currently, Costco kiosks in some locations are being used for samples of chips, cookies, and other pre-packaged goods. So Now You Know what else is replacing humans other than just self-checkouts or AI these days… and if you are one that often takes up a second job during the Holiday Months, it is being reported that there are fewer jobs being posted at this time for Holiday Help by nationwide retailers. NEWS HOME ON THE RANGE Guest: Jolene Obrigewitch, Development Director Home On The Range - A place where youth are given a second chance and find hope. https://hotrnd.com/ Every year a major fundraiser for the nonprofit Home On The Range is the PRCA Champions Ride Saddle Bronc Match. The top world leaders in saddle bronc arrive on the edge of the Badlands to participate in an epic mid-summer battle between the toughest broncs and the top athletes in the field. SPOTLIGHT TALENTED YOUTH DOING AMAZING THINGS So often we praise the talents of youth who play on a field or in a gym. Recently, we learned of two high school seniors in central North Dakota attending Wishek Public School who have been stepping up this fall and setting a great example. Javen Meidinger and Trestan Lepp have been doing just that. Thus far Meidinger and Lepp have been able to fix components on the score table, build a loft in the school's shed for extra storage, weld legs on dividing walls to stabilize better, and they have made a few carts that are being used in the shop as well as help out with other small projects. Gentlemen - you receive our Tip of the Hat and we wish you a successful future as you are already setting a great example for others. CHRISTMAS SHOPPING EARLY Now that Fall is here, are you starting your Christmas shopping already?? OR is it just too soon? Next week on the show just to tease ya, we are going to be talking about items to buy NOW to use for next spring and summer adventures and which ones make for great gifts this holiday season too! SAVING YOU MONEY is our goal. But for now, those who are a kid at heart… wanted to share what was just released. Chalee is heading up the annual Camp Early Bird week. We went to the farm for camp this year. We also go through our fall preview of upcoming topics.
A short break was all Donna & Jonathan needed to reset and refresh their minds. On this episode, they circle back to the Now You Know segment from the Kentucky Derby about Black Cowboys . From Esteban the Negro to Bass Reeves, black cowboys have been incredibly impactful throughout western world history. Admittedly, these names may be more widely know in southern US states; the way it's portrayed beyond the southern states transformed complex stories into a Hollywood misrepresentation of history. ROAD Trip Now! WHY? Cooler temps, no crowds. Hear about this cowboy destination recently visited that you need on your travel bucket list and a new TV Show to go along with it. Plus upsetting news of another walleye fishing cheater scandal has made headlines. And a familiar store is revived in time for Back To School Shopping. This is Rebecca Wanner aka BEC and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with the radio show The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in the Outdoors & Western Lifestyle! Episode 145 Details BEC and Tigger kick off today's episode by chatting about the game draws that will be coming through across the country. Unfortunately, BEC is not going moose hunting this year and Tigger's draw has yet to be determined so stay tuned for that update! Fishing & Hunting News In other fishing and hunting news, here is what you missed: Fishing Tournament Cheating Scandals One sure would have thought lessons were learned after last year's infamous Ohio Lake Erie Walleye Trail Tournament scandal last September. That ignorant decision of filling their caught walleye with lead weights resulted in the two men pleading guilty to felony charges of cheating and a misdemeanor count of illegal animal ownership after they were found to have used weights to make their walleye catches appear heavier. Both men were sentenced to 10 days in jail, fined $2,500 each, had fishing licenses suspended for 3 years, and had to forfeit the boat used in the tournament valued at $130,000. We are sad to say, lessons in cheating have not been learned. According to Outdoorlife.com, during the last weekend in July, a competitor in the Bart's Cove Walleye Duel held on Lake Erie, was caught messing with walleye catch weights. This time found to have stuffed the walleyes for weigh-in with more walleye. YES, you that's what you read. On the line this time around was an all-inclusive fishing trip to Panama valued at $14,500. Small price to pay in our book, for the individual whose name we are leaving out at this time as the man is claiming "not guilty" has now been a headline across the outdoors world. At the weigh-in when the judge cut open two of the fish, the walleye were filled with smaller fish that had holes in their lips. Now we all know that fish eat fish, however, what really made it suddenly suspicious that this was another Cheater Scandal, was finding a 12” walleye that had 3” of its tail cut off before being stuffed down one of the walleye weighed. On top of that, the smaller fish inside of both walleye were not in any type of "digestive state". The investigation is now in the hands of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and The Bend Show will be paying close attention to not just how this story ends but also how tournaments across the nation will adjust their rules and regulations moving forward. HEAT CHECK We're all tired of talking about the excessive heat, but after an accident of a different kind and how technology is continuing to control our lives. Felt this here story was one that EVERYONE needs to be aware of… An Arizona man was recently trapped inside his Tesla after a HOT 110-degree Arizona day caused the car's battery to MELT. Yes, Melt. The Peoria, Arizona man was then trapped in the car which quickly became an Oven as the internal temperature rose quickly. Since the battery was melted, the car's doors would not open, windows could not be rolled down, and had to now to access the dead computer that runs the car. He was trapped for 20 minutes until his sister whom he called was able to save him by using the Tesla app to prompt the car to open the passenger door. ABC 15 Investigators dug into this a bit more, turns on the Tesla Owners Manual there is outlined a manual exit option on the Tesla in case a battery failure occurs. However, it sounds like there have been many complaints filed against the car manufacturer. Ya know, back in the day, one used to keep in their car a pointed hammer or tactical pen in the glove department to break windows in case a car landed in water… this might be the next gift to give that next Tesla owner you know. ROAD TRIP TO THIS COWBOY DESTINATION Now we're going to coin this segment an installment of Catch BEC If You Can… #catchBECifyoucan Folks, there is plenty of summer left which is why BEC & Tigger's recent travels will be spurring you into action too. Tigger & BEC were both able to get off the place, however, were taken in separate directions. Something that rarely happens, as we are definitely usually two peas in a pod. What piqued BEC's interest and why chose the direction that she did was over the summer is that on the Ranch It Up Radio Show, Tigger had several interesting, fine folks from Home On The Range. After hearing so much about what that organization does, giving youth hope at a second chance in life, and their biggest fundraiser was happening, The 67th Annual Home on the Range Champions Ride Saddle Bronc Match out in Sentinel Butte, North Dakota which sits on the edge of the Badlands. BEC knew where her truck was heading, it had to be checked out. Now as for that Saddle Bronc Match... We will be sharing more on rodeo here down the road, as BEC was able to hang with the top Saddle Bronc Riders in the World, including the reigning Saddle Bronc World Champion & current leader World Leader, Sage Newman.. But that's for another show, and YES - After all that alone, BEC definitely is still the Favorite Crazy Aunt BEC in our nephews' books! But back to the road trip… as mentioned, since already visiting the Badlands, took in the historic small town of Medora, North Dakota which is a gateway to the famous Theodore Roosevelt National Park and home to the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame. Wow. Gorgeous. Lots of time was spent touring around this gem of a destination. The history is unbelievable! The family fun for all ages has us super excited to remind yall there's still plenty of time to road trip! AND to add this part of God's Country to your bucket list. After visiting Medora & the ND Cowboy Hall of Fame, more was learned than you can imagine. BEC was excited to be introduced to the television programming, "Dakota Cowboy." A great visit was had with Wild Bill Palunuk, the Media Director for the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame & co-host of the TV Show Dakota Cowboy, who is well-versed in everything there is to know regarding the Western culture, Cowboy heritage, and history of the Wild West including the influence it had on past President Theodore Roosevelt. Wild Bill and BEC can be heard in this episode and is a GREAT listen. You learn, be intrigued, and are guaranteed to be thirsty for more information about this area of the United States that is often overlooked... You will now have your eyes opened and heading your truck in that direction of the Badlands and the beauty of Western North Dakota too! Ed's latest essay in the New York Times, calling into question the big batteries that have made EVs so popular among American consumers (who can afford them), sparks a wide-ranging discussion in this week's episode. From battery supply chains to American consumer preferences, and from road trips to home charging, almost every aspect of electrification comes together in this fascinating conversation.
Let's all gather ‘round the campfire, Buckaroos and let Ol' Cactus Jim here tell you about some of today's hardy, hard-working cowboys. Yes, those manly men who live free-spirited, yippy-ti-yi-yo, cowboy lives out in the rustic ranch country of the Rocky Mountain West. Oh, wait – that was a century ago. The “cowboys” who're now humming “Home On The Range” across Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming are multimillionaire and billionaire corporate titan and celebrities like Rupert Murdoch, Bill Gates, and Bruce Willis. They don't really live there nor mix with locals, no do they actually “ranch” their spectacular 300,000-acre spreads, since they don't know how. So they hire real ranching outfits to bring in some cattle, sheep, and other ranching accruements, then they fly in on private jets occasionally and strut around like John Wayne. They are in a word, pathetic. But they surely are land barons, spending up to $200 million each for their vast spreads. Indeed, these dilettantes rule the availability of ranchland and scenic wilderness, pricing out people who really want to ranch and locking out families who want to experience some of nature's most majestic rivers and mountains. Fifteen years ago, the biggest private landowners held 27 million acres; now they've grabbed 42 million acres for themselves. Well, say apologists for wealth concentration, they bought the land with their money, so it's fair and square. But hold on slick. They don't come just for the views, hunting, and exclusivity – their ranches get generous land subsidies, plus, states like Wyoming provide no-tax hideaways for their wealth. This is Jim Hightower saying… So, even though you and I are shut out of these gated land baronies, at least we can take pride in knowing that it's our tax dollars that help the rich buy them… and lock the gates.
It seems like, at this stage in our little podcasts life, the animal movies are just unavoidable, with no repreive to be found even in animated films. Because HOME ON THE RANGE is, of course, about cows. And cattle resutling. And yodeling. And...hypnosis? It's a little strange, for a number of reasons, but mostly it's just very very average, which is what you would expect from a movie that almost killed 2D animation at Disney for good.
HOME ON THE RANGE (2004) - Is this the angriest the three prattlers have been since starting this podcast? Possibly. We talk about the rushed story, the lackluster animation and music, and the many overtly sexual innuendos throughout this Dark Age Film... but Don't worry - it's not all bad! We start off this episode with some pretty amazing news ;)
