Fasting is a spiritual discipline in which we master our appetites so that we may partake of heavenly manna. While food is certainly a glorious gift from the Lord; little compares with mastery over the appetites that so often seek to master us. The Apostle Paul uses the analogy of athletics in this regard, saying that we must run the race in such a way to get the prize. Wishing doesnt win a race, it requires strict training and discipline.

Reading is not intended to add more stuff to an already over-cluttered mind, but rather to provide new heights of perspective and new depths of understanding. Isaac Newton could never have invented the magnifying power of the telescope by himself. He read and reflected on the accumulated knowledge of those who had gone before him. Hank and Dreher talked about liberal democracy and how its degenerating into something that resembles totalitarianism. The liberal in liberal democracy references the liberties or freedoms that a government is mandated to guarantee its citizens, which includes the freedom of religion, speech, assembly, press, and the right to own private property. And democracy refers to self-government and equality of citizens under the law. All of this means that our liberal democracy provides space and protection for Christians to act for the advancement of justice. And when that protection erodesyou end up with totalitarianism. In the second segment of the broadcast, Hank seeks to answer the question, Did Adam and Eve really exist? This question is transcendently important to the historic Christian faith because if Adam and Eve did not eat the forbidden fruitif they did not fall into a life of perpetual sin terminated by deaththere is no need for redemption.

The term Advent literally means coming. As such, Advent is a season in which the Christian church celebrates the coming in flesh of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The final letter in the CHRISTMAS acronym is S, which represents Salvation. On Christmas Eve, it is time to turn our hearts toward the primary reason for the Incarnation of God in Jesus Christnamely, the salvation of sinners. The very nameJesusembodies salvation, as it is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua, meaning Yahweh saves or Yahweh is salvation. This Christmas season and throughout the coming year, may you be ever mindful of the reality that God has condescended to use you as the means through which the free gift of the water of life is dispensed to a parched and thirsty world.

Today he covers the next two letters in the acronym: S for Santa Claus, and T for Traditions. Believe it or not, even Santa can be saved! Far from being a dangerous fairy tale, Santa Claus in reality is an Anglicized form of the Dutch name Sinter Klaas, which in turn is a reference to Saint Nicolas, a Christian bishop from the fourth century. According to tradition, Saint Nick not only lavished gifts on needy children but also valiantly supported the doctrine of the Trinity at the Council of Nicea in A.D. 325. This Christmas as you celebrate the coming of Christ with a Christmas tree surrounded by presents, may the story of selflessness on the part of Saint Nick remind you of the Savior who gave the greatest gift of all. Moving on to the T in CHRISTMAS; it has become commonplace to hear Christians condemn trees adorned with ornaments as idolatrous while abusing Scripture to make their point. While the passage Jeremiah 10:2-4 may sound to modern ears like an uncanny description of Christmas trees, the historical and biblical context precludes this anachronistic reading of the text. This passage is in reference to wooden idols, not Christmas trees. In fact, Christmas trees originated in Christian Germany, from two Christian traditions that merged over time into the present Christmas tree tradition. As such, the Christmas tree began as a distinctively Christian symbol and can still be legitimately used by Christians today as part of their Christmas festivities.

Today he picks up with the third and fourth letters of the acronym, R and I. The R in CHRISTMAS of course refers to Resurrection. This is so transcendently important because, without the Resurrection of Jesus, there is little point in even discussing Christmas. As the Apostle Paul put it in a letter to the Corinthian Christians, if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless (1 Corinthians 15:17 NLT). In light of St. Pauls words, it is incumbent on us to demonstrate that the Christ of Christmas had the power to lay down His life, and the power to take it up again. The I in CHRISTMAS represents the Incarnation of Jesus Christthe Incarnation that makes Resurrection possible. Jesus took on all of the essential properties of human nature, but he did not take on that which is non-essentialnamely sinful inclinations. In fact, as Adam was created without a proclivity towards sin, so the Second Adam was untainted by original sin.

Over 30 years ago the battle for truthas far as the Christian Research Institute was concernedwas waged primarily against the wrong-headed claims of cults like the Mormons and Jehovahs Witnessesthose who failed to rightly understand Scripture or dangerously concoct extrabiblical truths based on spurious revelations. Yet today, the battle for truth has become an all-out war for even fundamental conceptions of reality. What else could explain the woke insanity of people who say that men can have periods or that a woman can be called a man? And tragically it isnt just truth thats at stake, its literally millions of lives as witnessed by the endless war on the unborn and by the alarming rates of suicide among young people. Hank refers to Congresswoman-elect Victoria Spartz, who grew up in the Socialist Republic of Ukraine. I grew up in socialism says Spartz, I saw what happens when it runs out of money. And its not pretty. Every country that has socialism has failed because this system is not sustainable. Socialism creates a lot of destruction and misery. Every socialist system is about suppression. If the government forces us to be equal, they have to suppress. Alarming but true, a majority of our youth are unfamiliar with the historical realities of socialism. How many millennials today have even the foggiest notion of what the Communist Manifesto entails? That socialism can be obtained only by the forcible overthrow of existing social conditions. The more Hank contemplates the mystery of God becoming man, the more staggered his imagination. The thought that the One who spoke and trillions of galaxies leapt into existence should cloak Himself in our humanity is beyond all comprehension. And yet this is precisely what Christianity proffers. A Creator beyond all comprehension who has revealed Himself in Incarnation. The Christ who was with Godthe Christ who is Godbecame flesh and dwelt among us. Hank likens the panic surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic to the Millennium Bug where formidable intellects along the Christian landscape busily propagated reckless rumors regarding the upcoming new year of 2000. People like Dr. Jerry Falwell who posited that the Millennium Bug was Gods instrument to shake the nation and start a revival in America that would spread across the face of the earth before the rapture of the Church. For his part, Dr. R.C. Sproul was envisioning a meltdown of civilization with one billion fatalitiesthe end of the world as we know it. Not knowing how to discern between truth and error, there were tens of thousands of Christians who were resigned to stocking up freeze-dried food and generators. What was really in short supply was discernment and truth. Well, today the media is doing the very thing they rightly accused Christian leaders of doing. They are using COVID-19 as the pretext for selling fear, for engaging in sloppy journalism, for employing subtly deceptive reasoning, and for trafficking in self-styled science.

Hank answers this by saying that he is a Christian because he believes that God created the universe; that Jesus Christ demonstrated that He is God through the immutable fact of His resurrection; and that the Bible is demonstrably divine rather than merely human in origin. This is not blind faith; it is faith founded on irrefutable fact. Hank goes on to say that he is not only a Christian because the Christian worldview corresponds to reality, he is also a Christian because Christianity is existentially satisfying. In this sense, Christianity is to be experienced rather than merely explained. Hank also answers the following questions: Would you say that its fair to trace back the prevalence of premarital sex and voyeurism to the acts of Martin Luther? Is Jesus God of all the universe, even a hundred million light-years away? What does the Bible say about fornication?

And quite frankly, Hank doesnt know when in our lifetimes making a difference mattered more; not just us as individuals, but the future of civilization as we know it. Hank also answers the following questions: What is the Eastern Orthodox view of the doctrine of original sin? Do full preterists know how long human civilization will continue?

Then the voice gives an invitation to go online via a particular website address shown on the screen apparently to discover the answer. On the website, you are provided with a typical, concise Evangelical presentation of the problem of sin and Gods resolution in the Gospel, and you are invited to pray a version of the sinners prayer. While this all seems sincere, is it true that one can know for sure that their sins are forgiven and that they have eternal life simply by praying such a prayer? This is a bold and expensive evangelistic program by which people might possibly come to a profession of the Christian faith, but one which smacks of easy-believism. And even if a follow-up encounter encourages the individual with further online materials, at best it will fill them with information, which will be woefully inadequate for true reformation. What we need to do is look more closely at Scripture and Sacred Tradition to answer the question, What must I do to be saved?

Rabbi Sacks died at the age of 72, but while he lived, he was a spell-binding orator, an orator who combined science, sociology, and the wisdom of Scripture with an eloquence that made him famous worldwide. He spoke often about the family. He said that the familyman, woman, and childis not one lifestyle choice among many. It is the best means we have yet discovered for nurturing future generations and enabling children to grow in a matrix of stability and love. At present, two communities are heading toward each other with blinding speed: one that finds its life in biblical truth and the other comprised of activists who are pushing for a radical redefinition of marriage and gender, a church remade in the image of the culture, and greatly expanded government filling the void of a once-vibrant church. It is a key that opens the gate of Christ and allows Christians to enter and gain access to all of His wonderful provisions and even more profoundly into all of the splendor of His Being. Open for me the gates of the righteous, wrote the Psalmist, and I will enter and give thanks to the Lord. I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation. In the Wisdom of Solomon, we read that the hope of an unthankful man will melt like the wintry frost and flow away like useless water. Thus, we are exhorted to arise each morning and thank our heavenly Father for the abundance of His mercies, for the blessing of the Lord will melt like iceevaporate like worthless waterat the appearing of the first rays of sunshine.

Unlike so many sermons today, St. Johns are not feel-good sermons for a feel-good generation. Rather, they are sermons laden with truths that transformhis words thunder from the past with prophetic urgency. Chrysostom writes, For the righteous, both the life hereafter and this life provide great pleasure. But the wicked and greedy are punished both here and hereafter. They are punished even here by the expectation of the retribution hereafter, and by the evil suspicion of everyone, and by the very fact of sinning and corrupting their own souls. After his fourth sermon in the series, an earthquake struck the city of Antioch. As such, his next sermon is rife with references to the earthquakes catastrophic effects. The earthquake, says St. John, manifested the power of God; its cessation showed His mercy. Nonetheless, it should make us mindful of Gods judgment, which the Antiochians had escaped for the time being. But judgment is coming, and that for all of us. Perhaps we should not fear the earthquakeor the current pandemicbut the cause of each. Fear the anger of God on account of our sins. When we rightly fear the Maker of heaven and earth, we are led from the wide road and seek the entrance of the narrow gate. Our Master is loving and filled with compassion. He knows the weakness of our nature. He seeks only one thingthat we might leave the way of transgression and enter by the narrow gate, for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction and those that enter by it are many.

To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/207/29 On todays Bible Answer Man broadcast, Hank dives deep into John Chrysostoms third sermon on the parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man. In explicating the parable, St. Chrysostom continues to stress the importance of reading and studying the Scriptures, for the Scriptures are replete with wisdom that transforms. Consider a request the Rich Man makes of Father Abrahamthat Lazarus return from the dead to warn his brothers so that they do not experience a torment such as what he was even then experiencing. Father Abrahams reply is profound: They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. Yet the Rich Man responds: No, Father Abraham, but if someone rose from the dead, they will believe him. In truth, however, they will not. Father Abraham replies again to the Rich Man, If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they listen if someone rises from the dead. The Jewish leaders living at the time of Christ proved that this is so, for they neither heeded the words of Scripture nor were convinced by Christs resurrection from the dead. In fact, after Christ had resurrected Lazarus (brother of Mary and Martha), they tried to kill him (John 1112). So, shows St. Chrysostom, even if a dead person rises, even if an angel descends from heaven, the Scriptures are more worthy of belief than any of them. For the Master of the angels, the Lord of the dead and of the living Himself, has given the Scriptures their authority. Hank contends that Chrysostoms sermons on Lazarus and the Rich Manfound in the book On Wealth and Povertyare the most poignant and profound in the annals of Christian preaching.

Not wanting to capitulate to that reality, Hank discusses the benefits of reading. Reading improves discipline, vocabulary, memory, creativity, reasoning, relaxation, and it can even stave off diseases such as Alzheimer's. More importantly, reading engages us with another mind. And when it comes to reading Scripture, the implications are simply staggering. By its words, we are brought into direct communication with the mind of God. But we also have access to the minds of writers directly inspired by the Divine. Thus in the pages of the inspired text, we have mind-to-mind communication with minds that were awash in uncreated energy. Hank also answers the following questions: How do you deal with a demon-possessed person? I started attending a new church after a long time away.
