How to Read the Bible like St. Thomas Aquinas and Dante

"Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ." Today, Dcn. Harrison Garlick is joined by Mr. Thomas Lackey and Mr. Adam Minihan to discuss how to read the Bible like Jesus, St. Paul, the Early Church Fathers, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Dante! There are four senses: literal, allegorical, moral, and anagogical. The guys explain Divine Authorship, Dante's thesis that you read his Comedy like you Scripture, and then explain each sense and give examples.Check our thegreatbookspodcast.com for resources on the Iliad, Odyssey, Dante's Inferno, and more!Summary: St. Jerome states, “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ” (CCC 112). In other words, we come to know the reality of Jesus Christ by reading Holy Scripture. Yet, what if we read the Bible incorrectly? If the Scriptures are a source of knowledge about our Lord, would not a wrong reading of the text twist our understanding of Christ? We, especially as moderns, are always in danger of distorting the Gospel to meet our own ideological standards. As Bishop Konderla teaches, “We are called to measure ourselves against the teaching of Christ and His Church, not our own imaginations or standards.” He continues, “We must receive the Jesus Christ who came two-thousand years ago, not create a ‘Jesus' who meets the fashions and fads of this age” (God Builds a House, 6). If we are to discipline ourselves to receive Jesus—and not manufacture a “Jesus”—then a vital part of that reception is a proper understanding of how to know Christ in Holy Scripture. How then does the Church teach us to read Holy Scripture? In the 1300s, the Italian poet Dante Alighieri wrote a letter to his patron, Lord Cangrande della Scala, regarding how one should read the Divine Comedy. His answer was simple: you read the Comedy the same way you read the Bible. In summary of Sacred Tradition, Dante explains that there are four senses or ways to read Holy Scripture: literal and three spiritual ways, i.e., allegorical, moral, and anagogical. These four senses were also taught by St. Thomas Aquinas (STI.1.10) and are contained in the modern Catechism of the Catholic Church (“CCC” 115-19). They represent the time-tested wisdom of the Church on how to come to know and love Jesus Christ through the Holy Scriptures.Let us examine each “sense” of biblical interpretation, how it relates to the others, and how they all draw us into a deeper relationship with our Lord. The literal sense of Scripture is also known as the “historical sense.” St. Thomas notes the literal sense is the meaning the author intended. For example, Dante gives the simple illustration of the passage: “When Israel went out of Egypt.” He observes, “If we look at it from the letter alone it means to us the exit of the Children of Israel from Egypt at the time of Moses.” The literal is simply the intended, historical meaning of a text. It is important, however, to interpret the literal correctly, because “all other senses of Sacred Scripture are based on the literal” (CCC 116). Similarly, Aquinas states that the spiritual sense of Scripture—allegorical, moral, and anagogical—is “based on the literal and presupposes it.” The importance of the literal sense of Scripture as foundational to all other senses emphasizes how vital it is that Catholics read commentaries that are faithful to the magisterium. Like a broken foundation of a home, a slanted literal sense can distort the greater spiritual senses built upon it.The allegorical sense is the first of the three types of the “spiritual sense.” In the...

Send us a textMany Catholics don't realize that the Bible as we know it today was compiled by the Catholic Church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. For the first 400 years of Christianity, believers didn't have personal copies of Scripture. Instead, they learned the faith through oral tradition and the teaching authority of the Church. This is why sola scriptura—the idea that Scripture alone is all we need—is false. We need Sacred Tradition and the Church's authority to rightly interpret the Word of God. Without these, confusion and division take hold.Fr. Dom also emphasized that reading Scripture should not be passive—it should stir our souls. When the Jewish people in Nehemiah's time heard the Word of God proclaimed, they stood in reverence, recognizing its holiness. That's why we stand when the Gospel is read at Mass! Scripture is meant to pierce our hearts and set them on fire. If we aren't being changed by what we read, we need to ask ourselves: Are we truly engaging with it?3 Takeaways for Men to Put into Action Today:Make Scripture a Daily Habit – Even if you start with just five minutes a day, open your Bible and read. Use the 14-book guide from St. Augustine to help you see the bigger picture of salvation history.Learn the Church's Role in Preserving the Bible – Knowing that the Church safeguarded and compiled Scripture strengthens your ability to defend the faith and grow in confidence as a Catholic man.Live the Word, Don't Just Read It – Choose one verse that speaks to you and put it into practice today. If Scripture isn't transforming your life, it's time to start taking it seriously.3 Memorable Quotes from Fr. Dom's Homily:"When I found your words, I devoured them. Your words were my joy, the happiness of my heart, because I bear your name, Lord God of hosts." – Jeremiah 15:16"Sacred Scripture is not just some book written by human beings… it cuts through flesh, bone, and marrow into the soul. It convicts us. It transforms us.""You cannot remove the Church from the Bible. It was the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, that safeguarded and compiled the very Scriptures we hold today."Support The Manly Catholic Podcast! If this episode strengthened your faith, don't keep it to yourself—share it with another man who needs to hear it. On this Reformation Sunday, we are taking a break from our study in the Gospel of Luke to consider whether the Protestant Reformation is over. Sadly, the answer is “no.” The Reformation continues. The concerns raised with Catholicism remain largely unchanged, as it continues to spread a false gospel. So, how can we help? By standing firm on scripture alone (sola scriptura) as our God-breathed standard.

Friends of the Rosary, Today, the faithful celebrate the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary. On her Assumption to Heaven, our Blessed Mother was solemnly reunited with her Son, and Our Lord Jesus has crowned Our Lady as Queen of Heaven and Earth. The Church celebrates Mary's, Mother of God's, queenship as a share in Jesus's kingship. This title of Queen is applied to the Mother of God since she was so closely associated with the redemptive work of her Son and is the Mediatrix of all graces. This Feast was established by Pope Pius XII in 1954. However, Mary's Queenship is not only based on Sacred Tradition but anciently rooted in the Scripture. The Archangel Gabriel, at the Annunciation, proclaimed that Mary would “bear a son, Jesus,” who would be given “the throne of David, his father” and “of his kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:31-33). Saint Elizabeth, at the Visitation, ardently addressed Mary as “the mother of my Lord” (Luke 1:43). Both narratives point to how the mother of the King is herself a Queen. This Feast reminds us to venerate Mary with devotion and love and to enthrone the Queen of Heaven and Earth in our hearts and homes. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You! Come, Holy Spirit, come! To Jesus through Mary! + Mikel Amigot | RosaryNetwork.com, New York • August 22, 2024, Today's Rosary on YouTube | Daily broadcast at 7:30 pm ET
