Today, we are joined by Rafi Billick, a couples therapist based in Baltimore and author of "Couples Communication Handbook: The Skills You Never Learned for the Marriage You Always Wanted." With years of experience helping couples at every stage of their relationships, from newly engaged to decades-married, Billick emphasizes that the foundation of all successful relationships lies in empathy. Many relationship experts believe that empathy lies at the heart of every successful relationship. Through years of clinical observation, therapists have discovered that the ability to truly understand and feel what a partner is experiencing creates the foundation for lasting connections. As a sex therapist, I've seen how political differences can create stress between couples. When partners don't agree on politics, it can lead to arguments and distance. That's why empathy—being able to understand and respect how someone else feels—is so important. Even if you don't agree, showing kindness and care can help keep your connection strong. Send us a Text Message. On this episode of the CMAJ Podcast, Dr. Blair Bigham and Dr. Mojola Omole explore groundbreaking advancements in HIV treatment and prevention. They examine various innovative approaches that are transforming the landscape of HIV care.Dr. Darrell Tan, a clinician scientist at St. Michael's Hospital and associate professor at the University of Toronto, discusses the article he co-authored, "Long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy for HIV-1 infection in adults." He explains the newly approved long-acting injectable cabotegravir for PrEP, an integrase inhibitor administered as a deep intramuscular injection administered every two months. Dr. Tan highlights its superior effectiveness compared to daily oral PrEP, emphasizing its adherence benefits and potential to revolutionize HIV prevention. Additionally, he covers the long-acting injectable treatment regimen for HIV, which combines cabotegravir with rilpivirine, administered as two intramuscular injections every one to two months. This regimen offers an alternative to daily oral medication, easing the treatment burden for individuals living with HIV.Dr. Maxime Billick, a graduating infectious diseases fellow at the University of Toronto and co-author of "HIV postexposure prophylaxis-in-pocket," introduces the concept of "PIP" (prophylaxis-in-pocket). She explains how this approach allows individuals who might rarely have high-risk encounters to keep a 28-day supply of PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) on hand, enabling immediate use after potential HIV exposure. Dr. Billick discusses the importance of ongoing patient-provider relationships and the role of PIP in empowering patients to proactively manage their sexual health.Throughout the episode, the hosts and guests explore the challenges and opportunities presented by these new treatments. They emphasize the importance of accessibility, awareness, and the need to address health inequities in HIV prevention. The conversation underscores the potential of these advancements to significantly impact public health and improve the quality of life for individuals at risk of or living with HIV.Join us as we explore medical solutions that address the urgent need to change healthcare. Ed Billick, host of Carolina Focus & a member of the WBT Sports Team joins us to have a look at the opening day of College football.  Billick hails from one of the nation's biggest sports communities, Pittsburgh, although he's been in the Carolinas for decades. Carolina Outdoor host, Bill Bartee, speaks to Billick about his view of the sports scene during this time of expansion*. The biggest conference that are making the most money are the BIG10 which is predominantly made up of Midwestern schools & the SEC which is made up of primarily southern teams (the closest to us is Columbia's S. Carolina).  The ACC organization recently moved to Charlotte & much is made about its continued expansion. *(following the interview the ACC announced that it was adding Stanford, Cal, & SMU) Besides the competitiveness of a game much is celebrated about the festivities of a football game.  The environment of the schools, the cheerleaders, the band & the music, the alum, the tailgating, the food, night time versus day time are all apart of the discussion.  Tommy Fradenburg, producer of the Carolina Outdoors this week, joins the chat. The College Football Playoff National Championship will be Monday, January 8, 2024, at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. Bartee told Billick that he'll be watching the games from the Charlotte outdoor store, Jesse Brown's, during the Labor Day Sidewalk Sale.

The Fall of 2006 was a tenuous time for Baltimore Ravens head coach Brian Billick. In just seven seasons on the job, he had seen everything from taking an unheralded young franchise to a Super Bowl, to a revolving door at quarterback, and an ownership change that would severely shake up his professional life. The team's new owner was a self-made billionaire from unassuming beginnings named Steve Bisciotti, and it was the fact that he and the head coach of his new team were more alike than different that would make their dynamic a difficult one to navigate. Billick's act was easy to take when the results on the field were positive; when things went the other way, the charm had a tendency to wear off a bit. Bisciotti now had an organization to run, and a lot of important choices to make – in order to find and follow the best path forward for the Ravens, he had to determine whether Brian Billick was actually a great coach, or all (straw reebok) hat and no cattle. Before he could even decide on that however, he had to suss out whether the two of them could get past some personal differences that were more prominent than ever now that they were working directly with one another. Tenuous times indeed. It's no secret. Coming off last season, Arizona State's offense needed some help. So with an eye at making a step forward, plus the arrival of a new offensive coordinator, head coach Herm Edwards brought in a big name to help out his attack. Brian Billick reached the pinnacle of the sport when he guided the Ravens to a Super Bowl title in just his second year at the helm back in 2000. That team, of course, is known for having one of the greatest defenses in league history, with Marvin Lewis serving as Billick's defensive coordinator. But Billick had made his name in the years prior as an innovative offensive mind, most notably as the architect of the 1998 Vikings offense, still one of the most potent attacks in league history. Following his tenure in Baltimore, which would earn him a spot in the franchise's Ring of Honor, Billick has had a successful run as a television analyst. Now, he brings his experience to Arizona State. In January, Billick reunited with Lewis when he was hired by Edwards to serve as an offensive analyst & special advisor to the head coach. He'll look to add his vast pro experience into helping the Sun Devils elevate an offense that will feature a new scheme and a new quarterback. In this episode, Billick and I discuss his coaching career, why coming to Tempe was the right move for him, his role in improving ASU's offense, quarterback development, how he put up a 3-0 record against Herm in the NFL, and much more.

Antonio weighs in on the evolution of the tight end (11:40), talks about “Antonio Gates Time”, plus how his basketball crossover move found its way into his route running… and then into the rest of the NFL (16:07). Billick admits that as a head coach he wasn't worried about LaDainian Tomlinson when he played the Chargers, it was Antonio Gates on 3rd down and inside the 20-yard line (17:03). Which current tight end adds the most to his team (17:54)? Antonio's answer might surprise you. Gates tells MRob why it was the no-name defender, not the big name, that was always the toughest to play (19:30). Gates played with some of the best quarterbacks ever and talks about the transition from Drew Brees to Philip Rivers (24:42), before telling how he used to get Philip going… “Drew would have thrown it to me.” Finally, Antonio talks about the type of player LT was as a teammate and a man (28:52). Michael Robinson and Brian Billick play the dynamic duo on today's podcast. First up, Coach Billick with a post-game locker room story involving a game that wasn't quite over yet (:53). MRob talks about a talented young running back who couldn't get out of San Francisco fast enough (2:33), then goes on to tell how all eyes, including Pete Carroll's, were on him and his cell phone as the lockout ended in Seattle (5:21). Coach and MRob dive into the advantages and challenges of the upcoming 17-game season (6:51). With the chance of fewer organized team activities, MRob asks what happens to the younger guys and role players that benefit from being in team facilities (9:20). Will active rosters remain at 53 players (11:44)? That question sends MRob reminiscing about the Beastquake…not because it was awesome, but because he was winded. MRob asks Billick how he transitioned to the offseason after winning the Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens (14:25). According to Billick, being the first team ever featured on Hard Knocks helped (15:42). What offseason changes will remain from the pandemic? And what needs to go back to “normal” (18:19)? Coach Billick and Rex go way back and the former Ravens defensive coordinator starts off by telling how much of an influence Billick had on his career (2:06). How much did Rex steal from Brian? Everything. Rex pulls out a locker room story from the Chicago Bears (3:12), and you'll find out why “Sweetness” was the perfect nickname for Walter Payton even when he wasn't being so sweet. Next, Billick asks Rex if he remembers the first time they met (5:12), and tells us what impressed him most about his future assistant coach. MRob expresses his love for Rex's larger-than-life personality, but asks if he'd change his ways in the current NFL environment (10:04). Coach Billick asks Rex the burning question, “Who's more arrogant, you or me?” (12:00), and Rex let's us know just how good Rex thought he was. After Rex praises Brian for his ability to adapt the offense to his players' strengths (12:42), he goes on to tell us about the first time he cried on a football field... after Peyton Manning sent the Ravens home in the 2006 playoffs (14:23). Speaking of the Mannings, Brian tells us about when he kindly asked Rex to not kill Eli Manning (15:57). MRob can see Rex still has the passion and asks why he's not coaching (18:04), and while Rex sounds open to it, he's getting his football fix in other ways. Billick asks Rex about the younger head coaches coming into the league (20:43), and Rex has thoughts, “he's already on third base and he thinks he hit a triple.” Being a head coach is tough, but coaching in New York City is tougher… Billick asks about the unique pressure of coaching the Jets (23:02), Rex thrived in NYC with his no BS style. Any tips for Robert Saleh as he starts his head coaching career with the J-E-T-S?
