What do you do when a community resident or homeowner calls with complaints as consistently as the sun rises and sets? Some are chronic complainers but easily handled with some attention and/or humor. But what if you have a persistent complainer who watches the neighbors like a hawk and insists that all homeowners follow HOA regulations to the letter of the law? And complains to HOA management with any and all violations or perceived violations, with expectations of punishment and consequences for the offender, even when it's about the trash bin that's left out an extra hour or two?Is this someone with a high conflict personality? Or does that strict adherence to rules and regulations mean that this person may have an Obsessive Compulsive personality? While we don't and won't diagnose – and neither should you – Bill and Megan discuss whether this personality type may be in the Cluster B category (high conflict) or Cluster C category (Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder), and what to do about it if you're confronted with this behavior in an HOA or anywhere.Note: Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder and someone with “OCD” are different. This is the last episode in the personality disorders series on First Line. Join me for a discussion on Cluster C disorders (Avoidant, Dependent, and Obsessive Compulsive), also known as the anxious and fearful cluster. A few notes about personality disorders that I want to cover or reiterate: Unspecified personality disorder can be diagnosed in an individual who meets the criteria of rigid personality traits that impair function and cause distress while having characteristics of more than one personality disorder without meeting the minimum criteria for any one. Psychodynamic therapy is first line treatment for personality disorders. It focuses on making the person aware of their traits and then taking steps to modify his or her behavior and thought process to take on healthier ways of interacting with the world. This is especially effective for histrionic PD, avoidant PD, dependent PD, and obsessive compulsive PD. Antisocial PD is unfortunately unlikely to benefit. Other options for therapy include CBT, supportive psychotherapy, and group psychotherapy. Medications DO NOT lead to personality changes, but it is a good idea to treat co-occurring anxiety and depression to better support individuals for personality disorders. Many of the PDs start to mellow out when individuals are in their 30s and 40s (especially borderline), but this is less true for schizotypal and obsessive compulsive PDs. * This episode is sponsored by TrueLearn. In today's episode of Mental Health // Demystified, Dr. Tracey Marks discusses a Cluster C personality disorder: Avoidant personality. An essential feature of avoidant personality disorder is a pattern of being socially inhibited, feeling inadequate and hypersensitive to rejection or criticism starting by early adulthood. There is a lot of overlap between social anxiety disorder and avoidant personality disorder. However, with social anxiety, the fear and anxiety is limited to social interactions. With avoidant personality, there's a deep belief that there's something wrong with you and because of that, you hyperfocus on subtle cues that people are rejecting or criticizing you.
