We'll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you're looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  Commercial: CU of GA STORY 1: Woodstock Man Charged With Shooting Firework at Helicopter A Woodstock man, David Rance Jeter, has been charged with shooting a firework at a helicopter, as well as yelling obscenities during an Indian wedding. He was arrested and charged with one count of terroristic threats and acts after firing a firework at a helicopter occupied by two passengers on October 20. In a separate incident on August 21, he was charged with one count of disorderly conduct for shouting obscenities during an Indian wedding, using a megaphone to make "insulting noises" in protest of the event. He blocked a lane of Cox Road and continued to yell obscenities until warned by officers to leave. Jeter is currently in custody with no bond. STORY 2: Canton's Salty Dog Featured in New History Cherokee Book Canton's iconic mascot, Salty Dog, is the star of a new book, "Salty Dog Goes to Denim Day," by Jennifer Dunn, with illustrations by Elly Hobgood. The book pays tribute to Salty Dog, historic downtown Canton, and the Canton Cotton Mills, taking readers on a journey through 1960s downtown Canton and the Canton Cotton Mills. In the story, Salty Dog embarks on a mission to deliver his mama's forgotten lunch at the mill. The book serves as a way for people who worked at the Canton Cotton Mills to share their experiences with their grandchildren. It will be available for purchase at the Cherokee County History Center and the Cotton Mill Exchange starting on November 26, with preorders available on the History Cherokee website. Salty Dog was originally created as the mascot for the Canton Cotton Mills' SCRUBDENIM brand, known for its softening process, and the advancements made at the mill continue to influence denim production today. STORY 3: Cherokee County Leaders and Residents Discuss Affordable Housing The Cherokee County Regional Housing Forum in Canton addressed the need for more affordable housing in the county. Leaders, community stakeholders, employers, real estate professionals, and more attended the event, emphasizing the importance of affordable housing. Margaret Stallings, Cherokee County Planning and Zoning Director, and Joe Collums from Georgia Communities, discussed an upcoming workforce housing apartment complex called Franklin Crossing, a 57-unit development aimed at addressing rising housing costs. The project, funded by low-income housing tax credits, is expected to offer rents that are significantly lower than current market rates for similar units. The development is set to be completed in the fall of 2024. Canton Housing Initiatives Director Ken Patton shared the city's plans for creating affordable and attainable housing. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info.  Back in a moment  Break: ESOG – DRAKE – HELLER LAW STORY 4: Over 1,500 Ballots Cast in Cherokee County Ahead of Election Day A total of 1,581 Cherokee County voters cast their ballots during the early voting period for the upcoming election. The early voting process proceeded smoothly. On Election Day, which is scheduled for November 7, the results of the various municipal elections will be determined. In Canton's municipal elections, multiple candidates are vying for the mayor's seat and two city council positions. Meanwhile, Woodstock voters will decide on a $24 million parks bond, with most of the funds slated for Little River Park. In Waleska, voters will consider two alcohol-related referendums. The third week of early voting saw the highest turnout overall. STORY 5: Creekview's Dollar Claims State Championship Katelynn Dollar, a Creekview senior, secured the Class AAAAAA state championship title in Carrollton, a redemption from last year's fourth-place finish. She started strong, competing closely with Marist's Ruby Little for the first half of the 3.1-mile race before surging at the midpoint. Dollar completed the race in 17:49.94, the fastest time among girls in any classification in Carrollton, concluding her high school cross country career with the state title. Creekview's boys also had a notable performance, with Malachi Burnett finishing third. However, the team fell short of their goal, finishing 10th in the team standings. Etowah, River Ridge, and Woodstock also participated. Commercial: DAYCO - ELON – INGLES 2 STORY 6: LEAH And now here is Bruce Jenkin's conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on snacking for teens. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and statistics show that one in three women and one in four men will be subjected to some form of sexual assault during their lifetimes.  Sexual Assault, and how the military and Veteran populations deal with it, has become a hot-button issue in many corners of American society as the focus turns towards rooting out predators and giving those who have experienced sexual assault more encouragement to come forward and tell their stories. On this episode of The 9 Line, we're joined by Dr. Nicole Anders and Felicia Douville to talk about VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System's Military Sexual Assault and Intimate Partner Violence programs, some of the data that drives the programs to be more effective, and also about Denim Day, the upcoming capstone event of April's Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

When do kids start dating...and what does that look like? How do social media and various apps affect relationships? How and when do we bring up consent? What are red flags your child might be in an unhealthy relationship or friendship? Today Joe Myers from Crime Victims' Center of Chester County returns (our first return guest!) to answer all these questions and more. We also discuss: the age when kids should have a solid understanding of reproduction, how to teach your kids to both give and get consent from others, and how consent and boundaries are BFFs. This episode is coming out during the first week of April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and we dive into what sexual assault means, how we can try to prevent our kids from being assaulted, and also what to do if something does happen. We also discuss (and link up below) many resources with videos and scripts on how to have these conversations so that “if we aren't weird, it won't be weird.” Join us!   Things we mentioned during our conversation:   Joe was our guest for Episode 5: Bullying & Cyberbullying.   AMAZE has great resources for both kids and parents on healthy relationships, consent, boundaries, sexual education and more.    Chrissie talked about the books  “It's Not the Stork” and “It's So Amazing”, part of a series of children's books by Robie Harris.    Joe mentioned Safe Secure Kids as a resource for parents to learn skills to talk to their kids about respect, consent, and other topics (with videos, handouts, and “learn together” games).    April is Sexual Assualt Awareness Month (SAAM) and the theme is “Building Safe Online Spaces Together”. Denim Day, as part of this awareness campaign, is happening on April 27th. April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and one way to raise awareness was by wearing jeans on 'Denim Day' which was on 28 April 2021. Denim Day is on a Wednesday in April every year and is to remind society of the dangers and injustices of victim blaming. The campaign began after the Italian Supreme Court, in 1999, overturned a rape conviction in which an 18-year-old student in Italy was raped by her 45-year-old driving instructor during a driving lesson in 1992. They ruled that because she was wearing tight jeans, there must have been consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Since then, what started as a local campaign to bring awareness to victim blaming and destructive myths that surround sexual violence has grown into a movement. We are all familiar with the refrain: “she was asking for it…”; “what did he expect?”. These are of course weak excuses for criminal behaviour, if not outright condonement. Denim Day asks community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual violence. This is particular apt given current concerns about sexual assault and harassment in schools and universities. Ofsted inspectors are to carry out checks on schools in England that have been the subject of recent complaints about sexual harassment and assault. The education watchdog said inspection teams would visit a sample of institutions where cases have been highlighted on the Everyone’s Invited website, which has collected more than 14,000 testimonies including alleged rapes and sexual attacks among children of school age. The visits will form part of an emergency review of sexual abuse in schools and colleges, due to be completed by the end of May. Ofsted said it would not report on individual schools or cases but would look at good and bad practice across the country. Details of Ofsted’s investigation can be found here and more information on Denim Day can be found on the website here.

Summer tends to be the season of downturns for online shopping; consumers are more likely to be out and about, typically visiting shops in person or travelling, and there are no blockbusting gift or sale-related holidays until well into the fall. As such, Shopify and e-commerce store owners may find the summer months to be a drag, with no great events to theme any product pushes around, save the simple fact that it is summer, and much less consumer interest or traffic. That's where non-bank holidays, what are rapidly becoming known as Social Media Holidays, come in.  What Are Social Media Holidays? That's where non-bank holidays, what are rapidly becoming known as Social Media Holidays, come in. A SMH can vary in importance or impact, ranging from the typically ignored Denim Day on April 28th, to more well known and traditional holidays (that, usually, don't result in business closing early), like Halloween, St Paddy's Day, or Valentine Days. These days are a boon for any store owner looking for a short burst of traffic, and for customers looking for an excuse to break up the monotony of their days, chasing novelty for novelty's sake. A clever SMH campaign, through a company like Omnisend, such as simply posting copyright-free photos of dogs on National Puppy Day can bring a welcome wave of fresh traffic and attention to any store, regardless of product or service offered, with little to no time or resource investment. SMH campaigns however can be a double edged sword when it comes to the heavy hitters of the Social Media Holidays, like Mother's Day. Before the rise of the internet, Mother's Day was infamous among retail and restaurant workers for being the true crucible of workers, a highly profitable crunch that can yield a massive one-day gain. It may seem all too easy and obvious to, in the days of social media, bombard your channel with Mother's Day coverage, tugging at the heartstrings of consumers, and getting them to show their love to Mom with another new purchase, but some SMHs, like Mother's Day, may unexpectedly poison your well. Whereas in the past, advertising media had to be engaged with by a customer to be consume, a choice made by them to interact or not, modern ad methods, such as automated messaging, can side-step this barrier, and deliver what may be unwanted or even jarring alerts to otherwise interested users. Days like Mother's Day and Father's Day, along with Remembrance Day, or other SMHs that seek to address either deeply personal relationships or spotlight societal problems, can be deeply traumatic, exploitative or emotionally disruptive to some customers. Interrupting their day to interject unwelcome feelings or associations that they may have spent a lot of time and energy dealing with or avoiding can cost you a dedicated and loyal customer. According to Pitstop host Lucas Walker, there is a simple way to not only avoid upsetting any of your consumer base or users, without a major investment in time or money from you, but deepening your customer's sense of trust and personal engagement with your store and product; before rolling out your Mother's Day SMH campaign, reach out to your members, and give them the choice to opt out.  Presented as a direct text based message, no elaborate designs or pushes to sell, from either the company brand ambassador, head or founder, this simple choice, left up to the customer themselves, can turn your relationships with your customers from one of transactions to loyalty, humanity, and respect, and actually drive later sales even further, as returning consumers show their appreciation for your consideration.
