Chrystul Kizer, 23, was sentenced to 16 years in prison after pleading guilty to the reckless homicide of Randall Phillip Volar, III, a man she alleged had sexually abused her for years. Kenosha County Circuit Court Judge David P. Wilk handed down a sentence of 11 years in prison followed by five years of extended supervision. Chrystul Kizer, 23, gained widespread attention online after being charged with first-degree murder, arson, theft, and other offenses related to the death of 34-year-old Randall Phillip Volar, III, in 2018. Her case, which has drawn significant advocacy and fundraising efforts from victims' rights supporters, has seen a prolonged and complex legal journey. This week, Kenosha County Circuit Court Judge David P. Wilk issued a 16-year sentence in a courtroom without video cameras, comprising 11 years in prison followed by five years of extended supervision. In May, Kizer had pleaded guilty to second-degree reckless homicide. This plea deal resulted in a sentence less than half the maximum 25 years allowed for the crime and a much lighter outcome compared to the potential life sentence she could have faced if convicted of murder in a trial. In July 2022, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that Kizer could invoke a law allowing human trafficking victims an affirmative defense for crimes committed as a direct result of their exploitation. This law allows such victims to be acquitted of any offenses directly resulting from the trafficking, regardless of whether anyone was prosecuted or convicted for the underlying crimes. Kizer's defense team argued that she killed Volar in response to his prolonged sexual abuse and exploitation. Kizer was 17 when she shot Volar twice in the head, set his body on fire, and fled in his vehicle. Investigators later discovered that Volar had been under investigation for producing child sexual abuse material and abusing several underage Black girls. His arrest before his death revealed hundreds of videos of child sexual abuse. Kizer's bail was initially set at $1 million but was reduced to $400,000 in February 2020. This amount was later covered by The Chrystul Kizer Defense Committee, the Chicago Community Bond Fund, the Milwaukee Freedom Fund, and Survived & Punished. An online petition supporting Kizer, which garnered over 1.5 million signatures, called for the charges to be dropped. Claudine O'Leary, an independent consultant who works with sexual trafficking survivors and attended the hearing, expressed her disappointment with the sentencing. She has been organizing community resources to support Kizer if released, noting that the Wisconsin prison system lacks adequate resources for survivors of sexual trafficking. O'Leary also mentioned that she works with many trafficking survivors who already distrust the court system, and she believes Monday's sentencing will only deepen that mistrust. “They're learning from the court system that their lives don't matter if they defend themselves—they need to be ready to face prison,” she said. “There's a profound lack of understanding about the real harm people endure.” During the hearing, Kizer's defense attorney revealed that Kizer was first trafficked at 16 when she posted an ad on a website later seized by the FBI for prostitution. She used the money she earned to buy food for her siblings. Kizer had previously stated that she didn't know who would respond to her ad since she was unfamiliar with the site and needed another girl to show her how to use it. Volar contacted her through this site. At the time they met, he was already under investigation by the Kenosha Police Department for sexual conduct with underage girls as young as 12. “The court is well aware of your circumstances surrounding your relationship with Mr. Volar,” Judge David Wilk said as he delivered his sentence. “You are not permitted to be the instrument of his reckoning. To hold otherwise is to endorse a descent into lawlessness and chaos.” Kizer ultimately chose not to go to trial, where she could have faced a potential life sentence. Instead, she pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree reckless homicide. “You entered a guilty plea. That allows you to argue your circumstances warrant mercy, but not that they warrant absolution,” the judge said. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Jessica Kizer, PhD and Professor of Sociology, shares her powerful life story. One of the main threads of her story is the deep feeling and sense of not belonging. Through her story, we can understand how identities, roles, and circumstances can cause us to feel as if we do not belong in this world as we are for who we are. You'll also hear Drew reflect to Jessica: "...that's stereophonic not-belonging on overdrive." Through her studies in Sociology, Jessica began to understand how societal forces shape our lives societal constructions, and choices made by others. A myriad of steps and people brought Jessica to the Hoffman Process. On her first day, she felt that all-too-familiar pang of not belonging. She saw that she was the only Black person there. This was the reality. Immediately, she felt a familiar pain of distance from everyone. But in the first few days, she experienced a shift. You'll hear Jessica share a moment when she saw that we can have very different life stories but arrive at the same place, feeling the same things about ourselves and our place in the world. This was when she began to focus on "our commonalities and not on our differences" in her time at the Process and after. As a mixed-race, neurodivergent person who teaches Sociology at a top university, perhaps Jessica's story is one we can identify with because we don't share those same identities. The patterns of not belonging, having to prove our worth, and feeling like we are in the wrong place, are common patterns among us. Jessica's experience, wisdom, and understanding, both academically and personally, shed a powerful light on the human experience. We hope you enjoy this conversation with Jessica and Drew. More about Jessica Kizer: Jessica Kizer was born and raised in a multigenerational, multiracial family in the South Bay of Los Angeles County. Her spiritual journey led her first to Hoffman Essentials and then the Hoffman Process in June 2023, where she experienced deep healing for herself and her family. As a result of her experiences growing up Black, Puerto Rican, and Indonesian and neurodivergent in a neurotypical world, she developed a strong sense of justice, equity, and inclusion, which led her to a career as a sociology professor. In her courses, Jessica creates educational experiences so that everyone can learn and, in turn, helps students learn how to communicate sociological research in a way anyone can understand. In her courses, students tutor elementary school students and then write and illustrate sociological storybooks for the children's home libraries. They also participate in intergenerational and interracial dialogues on race, research, and create podcasts on racial inequality, which they share with elders. Jessica loves going on walks and talks, journaling, and finding adventure in the everyday. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband, their two cats, and two dogs. Follow Jessica on Instagram. Presented by Lisa Bishop Do you express genuine appreciation for others? I am examining 5 habits of an extraordinary leader. And today is the fourth habit: show appreciation. Gary Chapman's book The Five Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace shares a statistic that 65% of North Americans reported they had not received recognition or appreciation at their workplace in the past year. And while 51% of managers believe they do a good job of recognizing employees for work well done, only 17% of employees believe their manager actually does a good job of recognizing them[1]. Clearly, something is off! Data shows 79% of employees will quit their jobs due to a lack of appreciation (Zippia.com), while employees who feel valued are motivated to do their best work[2]. How regularly do you show appreciation in the workplace? It's been said encouragement is oxygen to the soul. Just as every person has inherent value, every human being has a desire (whether they will admit it or not) to feel valued and appreciated; it's one of the deepest and most basic human needs. While it's been proven there is a bottom-line benefit to organizations for fostering a gratitude culture in the workplace, the buck doesn't stop there. As a leader, and especially as a follower of Jesus, you are entrusted with tapping into the potential of the people in your care, helping them unleash their gifts and talents. This is a different mentality than, “Just do your job.” You have a high calling for cultivating a work environment that is built on an attitude of trust and to inspire and not to embrace the old “command and control” mindset. How can you genuinely show appreciation? Don't just show gratitude for what people do, show appreciation for who they are. Be specific, rather than general, saying “Hey, good job on that project,” doesn't point out what you specifically valued. Instead, it might sound something like this. “Hey Jim, I just wanted to say I really appreciated your attention to detail on the presentation last week. You do your work with excellence, and you bring a lot of heart and passion to the team.” When showing appreciation, go beyond pointing out a person's performance to acknowledging their intrinsic value too. Dr. Paul White says, “Even the hardest heart will soften and respond to a freely given ‘cup of water' of appreciation—reviving their spirit and creating new growth.” How will you make showing genuine appreciation a leadership habit in your life? Who is someone in your workplace you will encourage this week? -- [1] Chapman, G. D., White, P. E., & White, P. (2012). Never let it be said that our supporters don't have the ability to pull one out of the bag! And this week our good friend and supporter JAC has introduced us to one of the greatest dupes we've ever seen! Can only imagine the disgruntled video shop browsers returning after they find that Norris, Swayze and McQueen are actually just related to their better-known namesakes. Checkout JAC's Back to the Filmography on https://pod.link/1686261095, where he's currently going through every Jason Statham movie. "Death Ring" (1992), directed by R.J. Kizer and starring Mike Norris, follows the story of a retired cop who becomes entangled in a deadly martial arts competition. The production of the film involved navigating the challenges of creating a compelling action film within the context of a martial arts tournament. With Mike Norris, the son of martial arts and action star Chuck Norris, in the lead role, "Death Ring" aimed to capitalize on the popularity of martial arts movies during that era. While "Death Ring" did not achieve the same level of recognition as other martial arts films of the time, the production team focused on delivering engaging fight scenes and a straightforward action narrative. The film's emphasis on martial arts and tournament-style combat reflected the trends in action cinema during the early 1990s. If HELL COMES TO FROGTOWN didn't start #SciFiJuly with enough of a bang, here's an epic interview with the film's co-director and editor, R.J. Kizer, who got his start editing for Roger Corman and New World Pictures with 1979's UP FROM THE DEPTHS (which we covered earlier this year) and went on to work on BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, SPACE RAIDERS, GALAXY OF TERROR, and so much more! We discuss the difficulties of these productions, including how Corman's vacation put pressure on the delivery time of UP FROM THE DEPTHS and how much PIRANHA was an influence, how BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS is a RASHOMON event, and how our Nearly New World selection of METEOR influenced the creation of HAMBONE AND HILLIE! Plus, we will talk about ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, which utilized Corman's special effects crew from the Lumberyard, GALAXY EXPRESS 999, ANDROID, Kizer's still-active career as an audio editor for X-MEN movies and many, many others, and, of course, HELL COMES TO FROGTOWN, including Daniel Stern's audition for the Roddy Piper role, working with co-director Donald G.
