Joseph Scott Morgan was the Senior Investigator for the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office in Atlanta, Georgia for fourteen years, managing a staff of 11 medicolegal death investigators while maintaining a personal caseload of 200-300 deaths per year. Prior to his tenure at FCMEO, Joseph was a Forensic Investigator with the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office in New Orleans, LA for six years. In addition to his death investigative duties, Morgan served as an autopsy assistant, conducting more than 7000 autopsies over his two decades in two of the south's most beautiful and violent cities. Morgan has recently completed research involving the largest national study of U.S. coroners ever conducted-the initial findings of which he was invited to present at the 2011 meeting of the American Association of Behavioral and Social Sciences. In 1999 Joseph earned the status of Board Registered Diplomate of the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators-one of the first nationally to be awarded that honor. Along with this professional achievement, Joseph holds a Master of Forensic Sciences degree from National University in LaJolla, CA. Since beginning his current tenure as an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and Forensics at North Georgia College and State University, Morgan has been instrumental in establishing the first concentration in Investigative Forensics for the University System of Georgia. There are many things An Garda Síochána know about the woman whose skeletal remains were found in 2021 during the construction of a greenway in Co Cork.They believe the woman was 70 years or older when she died, that she was 157cm tall and had a large frame. They think she wore dentures made in the 1960s while she also suffered from arthritis. Carbon dating suggests she died between 1985 and 1987.What they don't know is her name.They commissioned Prof Michelle Vitali, a director of the Institute of Forensic Sciences at Pennsylvania Western University and a specialist in forensic illustration, to draw an image of the dead woman. She works pro bono for police forces in the US and provided her services free in the Cork case.Vitali explains to In the News the process she used to create an image from the woman's skull which might help jog memories. It is not, she stresses, a portrait of the dead woman, rather a way to illustrate her features. The official story was that convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester died in a South African prison fire on May 3, 2022, but the truth was far more shocking: he had faked his own death with a stolen corpse and easily walked out of a maximum security prison. Known as "The Facebook Rapist" for luring women with fake international modeling opportunities, Bester was serving a 30-year sentence for the rape and robbery of two women and the murder of his girlfriend, Nomfundo Tyhulu, in 2011. In this episode, we unravel the chaotic details of his escape and his life on the run: The Fake Death: An investigation into the cell fire and the burned remains raised immediate suspicion. The body used to stage his death was later confirmed to have died before the fire from blunt force trauma to the head, and DNA did not match Bester . rWotD Episode 3058: Forensic Science Laboratory bombing Welcome to random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia's vast and varied content, one random article at a time.The random article for Wednesday, 17 September 2025, is Forensic Science Laboratory bombing.The Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) targeted the Northern Ireland Forensic Science Laboratory (NIFSL) facilities on Newtownbreda Road in the southern outskirts of Belfast with a large 3,000 lb bomb on 23 September 1992. The huge impact of the bomb destroyed the lab and damaged over 1,000 homes within a 1.5 mile radius, including adjacent Belvoir Park, a Protestant housing estate. It was one of the biggest bombs ever detonated during Northern Ireland's Troubles, causing massive damage and being felt over 10 miles away. Hundreds of residents had to be treated for shock. Several military vehicles were damaged. The lab was a key target because it analysed evidence in cases involving IRA attacks. This is the second in a two-part mini series on forensic taphonomy centres or body farms. This week Lynda and Cass are meeting Dr Anna Williams, Professor of Forensic Science at the University of Central Lancashire. At present there are only a dozen body farms established around the world and none in the UK, but Anna has been advocating for establishing one in the UK for over a decade. In this episode we look at the reasons why Anna has found it so challenging to establish a UK body farm and what value it might bring to our forensic sciences. Forensic taphonomy is the study of what happens to a body between death and discovery. It's one of the oldest forensic disciplines and one of the most controversial. Why? Because to properly study forensic taphonomy you need bodies. The Victorians took them from graveyards, these days we have body farms. Body farms have proved to be a vital resource for forensic scientists to learn more about how and why bodies decompose in certain conditions. It's a hugely complex subject which brings in factors like climate, soil, insects, scavengers, diet and many more.
