In this episode, the guys start off with some Michigan Regional Quirkisms.  They then review a 2024 paper titled "The effects of cognitive bias, examiner expertise, and stimulus material on forensic evidence analysis" by Michelle Pena, Stephanie Stoiloff, Maria Sparacino, and Nadja Schreiber Compo, from the Journal of Forensic Sciences (2024; 69:1740-1757).   The research paper provided lay participants (students) and fingerprint expert participants  with images of ground truth, matching and non-matching fingerprint pairs.  The researchers controlled the exposure of the participant to contextual case information.  Lay participants made a number of errors and seemed to be more impacted by case information compared to experts in these trials.  Glenn and Eric discuss why that might be and discuss and compare other studies that might be relevant on this topic. In this episode of Crime and the Courtroom, John Collins shares the experience of writing his new book, Valid Comparisons, and some of the unexpected impressions that his research had on him. As he explains, among the most impactful revelations was the disinterest of the National Academy of Sciences committee that produced the 2009 report, "Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States - A Path Forward." The impact of this report, however, was amplified by the 1993 Daubert ruling and the 2007 report by the Innocence Project summarizing the first 200 DNA exonerations. Her current research includes characterizing vaping products confiscated from Virginia school students; characterizing cannabis and cannabinoid-products for quality and labeling accuracy; assessing impacts of vaping on alcohol impairment evaluations; and evaluating novel treatments for opioid overdoses. Dr. Holt is an active member of the Society of Forensic Toxicologists, The International Association of Forensic Toxicologists, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, the International Association of Chemical Testing, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Banfield, a former IRS agent, is charged with four counts of aggravated murder in the February 2023 deaths of his wife Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan at their Herndon, Virginia home.Prosecutors allege Banfield plotted the killings with the family's Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, with whom he was having an affair. Magalhães has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is expected to testify against Banfield. The official story was that convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester died in a South African prison fire on May 3, 2022, but the truth was far more shocking: he had faked his own death with a stolen corpse and easily walked out of a maximum security prison. Known as "The Facebook Rapist" for luring women with fake international modeling opportunities, Bester was serving a 30-year sentence for the rape and robbery of two women and the murder of his girlfriend, Nomfundo Tyhulu, in 2011. In this episode, we unravel the chaotic details of his escape and his life on the run: The Fake Death: An investigation into the cell fire and the burned remains raised immediate suspicion. The body used to stage his death was later confirmed to have died before the fire from blunt force trauma to the head, and DNA did not match Bester .  The Accomplice: Dr. Nandipha Magudumana (Dr. Nandi): Celebrity physician Dr. Nandi, who claimed to be Bester's customary law wife, was his essential partner in crime. She initially collected the body and was later spotted shopping with Bester, aiding his life as a fugitive. She is a glamorous doctor who had it all, but chose a criminal life as a "cold-blooded accomplice". Life as a Fugitive: Before his escape was confirmed, Bester was running multiple scam companies from prison.
