If you were been arrested, stripped, beaten & thrown in jail, would you even think of praising God? Who would ever think of singing hymns in the middle of the night while in prison with an earthquake shaking the ground? This week Pastor Nick focused on Paul's missionary journey and some of those incredible experiences. In spite of the harsh treatment he received, Paul persevered in prayer, focusing on God's faithfulness and filling his heart with praise. ✨ We are all challenged by things in life, and we can know the Lord's joy in spite of hardship. We are inclined to look for life in places it cannot be found. Pr. Nick preached from Luke 24:1-7 digging into the question the angels asked at the empty tomb - "Why do you seek the living among the dead?" Death is not the end - Jesus is! He left the grave. He rose to life! ✨ Because He conquered the grave, hope is not lost! When was the last time you asked for God's power to be displayed in your life? ✨ You can have confidence to come to God & boldly approach His throne! Don't let your feelings of unworthiness keep you from asking, from approaching, from God. In Jesus, we can have confidence to ask anything and approach the throne of grace at anytime. Jesus encourages His disciples to confidently approach God with whatever, to believe & not doubt, to trust & obey, because nothing is impossible for our God. Nothing is too great or too big for God. He sits enthroned above all. He speaks and it is done! Are you becoming like your parents? Today we continued our study of John 14 as Pr. Nick led us through verses 7-14. He challenged us with the truth that you can know who the Father is and yet not really know Him. You can walk the walk and talk the talk and know the answers to the test -- but do you know Him? Pr. Nick assigned some homework for us to reflect on how God is & has been at our work in our individual lives: write down three things you have experienced in your life where you have thought, "That is the power of God at work in my life." ✨ As we walk with and see God in our lives, it is our prayer that we, too, would be the love and grace of God to those around us. Scripture References: John 14:7-14 Colossians 3:16 1 Timothy 1:12 John 16:6 Ephesians 5:1-2 We would love to pray with you today! https://www.emmauslutheran.org/prayer Fill out our virtual Connection Card: https://emmauslutheran.churchcenter.com/people/forms/152121 Be apart of Emmaus' Mission through giving! http://emmauslutheran.org/give Connect with us online… www.emmauslutheran.org www.facebook.com/Emmausaflc www.instagram.com/emmausaflc www.twitter.com/EmmausAFLC
What is your life? Life is short - play hard! Pastor Nick considered time, our most prized commodity in life and how we spend it. In John 14:6 Jesus says, "I am the life". What did Jesus mean by that? ✨ True life is found in no other than Jesus, the life-giving Spirit; and living a life that honors Him needs to be our priority. Scripture References: John 14:1-6 James 4:14 Psalm 90:12 Luke 12:13-21 1 Corinthians 15:45 We would love to pray with you today! https://www.emmauslutheran.org/prayer Fill out our virtual Connection Card: https://emmauslutheran.churchcenter.com/people/forms/152121 Be apart of Emmaus' Mission through giving! http://emmauslutheran.org/give Connect with us online… www.emmauslutheran.org www.facebook.com/Emmausaflc www.instagram.com/emmausaflc www.twitter.com/EmmausAFLC
What is truth? Pr. Nick led us on deep dive into John 14:1-6 as we looked at what truth is. For as long as people have inhabited the earth they have been seeking after questions of truth and the meaning behind things. Jesus came to witness to the Truth. Jesus is The answer. He is The Way, The Truth, & The Life. To know the truth is to have a relationship with Jesus (The Truth). ✨ Knowing Jesus leads us to a life of contentment & peace. We are home with the Father, safe & secure in His loving arms. God has revealed something that is both mind-blowing and obvious: Jesus is the way to the Father. Pastor Nick led us through John 14:4-7 where we saw how similar we are to the disciples. Whether you are impetuous like Peter, a challenger like Thomas, or a head-scratcher like Phillip, God is calling you to Himself through the cross. God's answer may be obvious but… We might challenge it We might not 'feel' it We might complicate it ✨ Faith is trust in what we cannot see. It's letting God be God… and humbly following Him and not ourselves. Where is your home? This morning Pr. Nick kicked off our new mini-series in John 14, "His Heart , Our Home!" This world is not our home but rather our home is with God Himself. He is preparing a place for you now and is looking forward to the day when we are all fully reunited with Him! ✨ Our prayer is that we all would have open hearts toward Jesus, and bigger hearts for each other and those who don't know Christ. What do you listen do? Our basis for making decisions is limited by what we know, see and experience from this world…We need a better foundation to bast our decisions on… You will hear what you listen to You will hear what you focus on You will hear who you are with The ultimate victory has been wone, and that victory is yours when you focus on Jesus! In the presence of God the noise of the world disappears and we focus on Jesus. ✨ He gave His life to give you life! There is no justice, peace, no social change without Jesus as only Jesus has the power to change you and mankind; nothing we do will be lasting without a change from within! Pr. Nick taught from 1 Timothy 4 helping us understand how to train for Godliness. Unlike physical training, we don't train by ourselves but with others and with the Holy Spirit! The more we abide in Christ, seek Him and His help to grow, the more we will be able to withstand the toil and troubles that come our way! ✨ This is the Gospel. Jesus saves, sustains & strengthens us! Living a healthy spiritual life demands training & discipline. The Savior of the world was born on that day, just as the angels declared! ✨ The true meaning of Christmas is the Hope of Christ and the Peace He Brings In a very real way, peace had come to the earth because Jesus, Himself came. Did you count your blessings this past Thanksgiving? God desires for all to see His mercy on display! Pr. Nick gave a powerful sermon about God's mercy on display as he preached from 1 Timothy 1:11-20. Paul is talking about 3 things he is grateful for in verse 12… 1. That God has given him strength 2. That God has judged him faithful 3. That God has appointed him to service in His kingdom ✨ Mercy is not getting what we deserve & grace is receiving what we do not deserve! 1. Our sin is not greater that God's mercy! No sin is greater than the mercy of God. Nothing you have done is greater than what Jesus has done. 2. God wants to display His mercy & grace through your live ✨ Sharing our testimony living for Christ - being patient with others even when they are not patient with you, being kind to those who have offended you, not repaying evil for evil but instead doing good to those who hurt you. Pr. Nick shared an impactful message about how all Scripture is God breathed from 2 Timothy 3:14-17. The Bible is not merely a book offering knowledge and understanding as if what is teaches is just another subject to aid your life…The Word is the very living essence of God. There is no other book like it… …it has been tested by skeptics in every generation and yet has stood the test of time. …No other book has been consistently studied, picked apart & scrutinized to the point that governments have both made it their law & on the other hand tried to get rid of it for good and yet has stood the testing & continues to gain acclaim There is no other book in history that speaks to our hearts like this one… …There is no other book that satisfies the greatest questions about life, death and morality… …No other source that reveals what's hidden deep inside our hears… …There is not other book that nourish your soul, that offers grace like this one. What does living and active mean & look like? 1. Powerful - continue in power of God's Word 2. Transformative - Allow it to be surgical in your life 3. Persistent - God's Word sticks with you The benefits to being in the Word… 1. Teaching - we have to know in order to know 2. Reproof - it means that you are being warned & it has to do with something that has been exposed, something is coming into the light that has been hidden in darkness 3. Correction - turning around 4. Training - life coaching, the Bible is to be our life coach ✨ …So that we can be equipped, armed or protected like a football player wearing a helmet & pads. You are not who the devil tells you, you are, a no good, unloved, impossible, unsavable soul that has no hope…You are graced & in Christ Jesus righteous & chosen. You are loved by God. As you continue to walk in what He has done for you, continue abiding & growing in relation to Him. Today, our Pastoral Intern, Alex Woodworth, preached from 2 Timothy 2:14-26 about how as believers in Christ, regardless of one's occupation, we're all called to service in God's Kingdom. We've all been commissioned to the work of making disciples of all nations. Paul gives Timothy a blueprint to some of the work which we've been called to - Be diligent to present yourself to God as an approved worker… …A Worker's Words: Words either build up or tear down …A Worker's Foundation: Jesus and His Work is our foundation …A Worker's Pursuits: A response to the Gospel All Christians are to present themselves as good workers for the sake of Christ's kingdom. Pastor Nick continued in our new sermon series in 1 & 2 Timothy. He dug into the topics of faith & fanning into flame the gift of God from 2 Timothy 1. Fan into flame the gift! The only way we can rekindle the fire is to receive all the more the grace given to you. We cannot earn it & we don't deserve it…we inherit what Christ has done. Fix your eyes on Jesus and fan into a bonfire this supernatural grace we have been given. The Spirit at work in us… Power - the ability to accomplish God's will Love - the end result of the power given to us Self-control - the judgement to know how to unite the power and love ✨ You are not disgraced for Jesus has that grace in the palm of His hand ✨ If you're going through the motions, if your passion has been lost & you don't know what to do to get back…fan into flame the free gift of God. Pr. Nick spoke about authentic & sincere faith from 1 Timothy 1:1-11. ✨ Part of authentic faith is growing in our transparency with one another. ✨ Any fruit of growing in our faith is evidence of the Holy Spirit's work transforming us as Paul speaks about in Romans 12:2. How do we measure spiritual maturity? By… Being rooted & established in the Gospel Moving towards authenticity Being transformed by the renewal of your mind Are you becoming more like Jesus, or are you trying to make Jesus more like yourself? Pr. Nick gave a powerful, vulnerable, & moving testimony of how God walked him and his wife through the process of answering the call to come alongside families and children in crisis. He preached from Genesis 12:1-7 & James 1:22 about obediently trusting in the Lord & following Him - even when it doesn't make sense or is hard. ✨ The only way to truly affect change in society is by the power of Jesus' name investing in one person at a time. Pure religion is selflessly doing something without getting anything in return Ministry to the most vulnerable is messy & difficult…sharing in suffering is not for the faint of heart. ✨Adoption is an earthly picture of what Christ has done for us… …God can redeem anyone & anything. He is redeeming us in every way as we allow Him to step into our lives. True obedience is Kingdom first living… …It's considering the eternal over the temporary …It's not adding God into our plan but rather stepping into what God has always purposed & following Him! Jesus forewarns His disciples that we will face challenges on account of being his followers, because the world stands opposed to Jesus When facing hardship is natural to react in one of two ways. We are prone to either avoid or fight back. To this Jesus responds with remember… …You are the salt of the earth …You are the light of the world The first thing Jesus is speaking to here is engage. 1. Jesus calls the church to engage the culture with the Gospel ✨ You are where you are, you live where you live, you go to school or work where you go because He has purposed for you to impact those around you. 2. Jesus calls the church to shine or stand out for the Gospel ✨ As we allow the grace of Jesus to work within us and our minds are renewed by His love, the more His image and glory will shine through us. Can you think of someone who has impacted your life to the point that you saw the glory of God in and through their lives? ✨ As we were impacted God is calling each one of us to impact someone else. Do you have a healthy work/life balance? Do you have a healthy balance between time spent in leisure & time spent in meaningful, spiritual & biblical activity? ✨ Everything God did in the flesh while here on earth was intentional. Jesus prioritized His relationship with the Father! Jesus lived perfectly as He showed us how to "Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness" 1. Jesus exercised a proper work/rest balance What He showed us in His time on earth is that you cannot handle what is before you without full reliance & trust in the One who has made you & purposed you to live. 2. Jesus exercised proper 'yes' and 'no' balance He stayed focused on the mission & what that looks like was not meeting every need but meeting the needs His Father called Him to meet. ✨ Without clarity Jesus could not have walked that balance. If Jesus needed to do this, how much more do we need to? Two questions for you to aid in your understanding of how you find balance in your walk with God… A. Do you take time to cease, to rest, to refocus? B. Do you give to God your best or your first or do you just give Him the remainder of what you have left in the tank? Have you ever been so exhausted that you could not go on doing what you were doing? Pr. Nick gave a powerful sermon about the significance & necessity of rest from Mark 6:30-32. ✨ Rest for the soul is more that just sitting down, napping or going to sleep. It is about relationship. Turning off & spending time listening to God. 1. "Come to me" -Jesus. Rest & relationship go hand & hand. We have to stop the things that are consuming our time & attention in order to grown in our personal relationship with God 2. "Take my yoke" -Jesus. In this life we will face hardship for there is an enemy working against us. But Jesus' yoke is different, because He holds the weight. He takes on the burden & gives us relief. 3. "Learn from me" - Jesus. Never miss an opportunity to stop & just allow God to work in your heart. Spend time in His Word, pray & listen. Spend time. Soul restoring cannot happen if we lead ourselves or miss the opportunity. ✨ Jesus went to the cross, suffered, died & rose again, so we could be renewed & refreshed mind, body, & most importantly soul. One day He will fully restore all things. S E R M O N R E C A P Is it enough to simply believe that God exists? No. Jesus, only Jesus, is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. 1. Called to faith in Jesus 2. Jesus is your only way to God 3. There's no other way ✨ Jesus calls us to faith that's more than some time of "intellectual assent" ✨ Jesus did what only God could do when He died on a cross in our place and rose again to life. ✨ Jesus is the only way because He said He is the only way. ✨ Jesus is the only way. There's no other name by which we must be saved. But Christianity isn't exclusive as to whom may be saved. What is wisdom? How do we know what is right or wise? Our world has different perspectives on wisdom because people come from different sets of knowledge, experience, & discernment. God's wisdom can bridge our cultural divide… 1. God's wisdom is found in God's Word 2. God's wisdom is about His Son 3. God's wisdom is revealed through His Spirit 4. God's wisdom is discerned by Jesus ✨ We have God's Word in our hands, the wisdom of God at our fingertips. We have the opportunity to know His will, His plan, His character, His love! ✨ God's wisdom is opposite of human wisdom, & it is why it can build bridges across our cultural divide, but we cannot understand it from our perspective. ✨ The Holy Spirit is the one who shows you your need for Jesus. He shows you your sin & lifts your burden when you repent ✨ Jesus is able to bridge the cultural divide Are you ready to trust Him with all your impassible barriers? We have all experienced times when things do not go as planned or are outside of our control, so how should we as believers react or what should our position be? Aaron Bogott gave a powerful sermon entitled "If the Lord Wills" from James 4:13-17. He talked about how sometimes things don't always go how we planned or wanted them to go and how God's plan is so much better than our own. He gives us what we truly need and not simply what we want in the moment. Pride can be subtle. Our will must be submitted to His will. Plans for tomorrow should not stop us from doing good today. We should not get stuck in just planning and planning properly under the Lord's will, but we should also execute the good we know about and just do it. ✨ We can't wait for the main event to start our ministry, it is about being faithful in the little things, day by day. ✨ We were not created to just sit around until the Lord returns. He has created us for good works and for each one of us this may look different based upon who He's created us to be. Pr. Kevin preached a powerful message focused trusting in God's timing, plan, & purpose from Matthew 24:36-51. This was part 2 of a two-part series about the end times. It is good to admit you don't know everything. …It should be a freeing feeling to know someone else is in charge. …The more you know the greater your responsibilities. ✨ You can trust God with your unknown uncertain future. This Pentecost Sunday our Worship Leader Ben Webb preached about the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives today from Romans 8:12-17. The Holy Spirit leads the believer in Jesus… ✨ From death to life ✨ From slavery to adoption ✨ From destitution to riches Be led by the Spirit… …Do not try to put the flesh to death by the power of the flesh …Daily put to death the deeds of the body through the Spirit To what are you a debtor? Are you a debtor to the flesh, separated from God by your sins, and a slave to the very thing that brings you death? Are you a debtor to the Spirit, adopted by Christ as a child of God, and freed to know the life that God gives? Are you a child of God, yet living as if you were still obligated to live according to the flesh? Allow the Spirit to lead you out into the freedom that He gives to the believer. Pr. Nick preached about having faith to believe when the stakes are high as we looked at the story of Moses from Exodus and Hebrews 11:23-27. ✨ It's easy to believe in something when there is not a lot at stake God has a plan for each one of us. God doesn't do anything without purpose. ✨ He doesn't waste time. He doesn't waste a word. He doesn't waste a miracle. He does everything perfect - He can't do it another way. He doesn't make mistakes, there is no random. A lot of our struggle with personal identity comes from a misinformed view of God and His word. ✨ If what we are in what we look like or have (appearance, status, abilities, etc.) is our identity then we are truly misunderstanding what the Bible has to say - which is that we were born in the image of God. Created by Him. God is going to use the context for which you were born into for His glory. He is already doing it. He is going to use your story for His story. ✨ Moses saw that he was being held in the hands of a God He could not see and yet a power that was greater than what he could… …That God's plan could be trusted even when the stakes were so high and his life was on the line. Moses led the captives out of slavery in Egypt … …Just as Jesus leads us out of our eternal and spiritual bondage in order that we would have life in His name. We don't know what is ahead but we place by faith what is ahead in the hands of the only One who knows. The God of Moses is the same God we worship today! ✨ What God was doing in Moses He can do in you. Moses was just an ordinary guy sent into extraordinary circumstances in life. When's the last time someone promised you something & didn't follow through on what they promised? And because of that you had to take matters into your own hands? They are no going to come through for me, so I'm going to do have to do it myself. I think we are conditioned to have low expectation of what others promise because we let each other down or we don't always follow through on what we say. I wonder how many time we have gotten angry at God for something we created ourselves, because we could not trust upon the promise of the Lord? ✨ Faith is the substance of things hoped for & the evidence of things not seen. Reminder: Saving faith in Jesus is God's gift - it's His work in us! We cannot generate faith in God withing our hearts anymore then we can see the future. ✨ God calls us to obedience & very rarely tells us what's next because the point of it all is that we trust in relationship with Him…His will & plan…Because His will is the plan - it's for His glory! So often we get fixated on what we think should happen that we fail to see what He was doing all along! ✨ God is good & everyday He is showing us His goodness in the things He is leading us through! Are there matters in your own live you're taking into your own hands? Think about the things you have been unable to do & consider how God uses them. There will come a day when your faith in Jesus will be challenged… …So remember what true faith is …Most importantly remember that your faith is grounded in Him who has saved you not your own doing ✨ Faith is central to all things we hope in …we do not have the ability of knowing all things, or observing all things from the beginning to end ✨ Faith is a trust that comes from God …who builds assurance in our lives, that what we are trusting in is reliable, what we know is sufficient & that what we believe is sure …what gets us into trouble is thinking that our faith is something that we generate. ✨ Faith is simply the avenue by which we come to God and trust Him for our salvation because He has persuaded & convinced us though His love, grace & faithfulness. Without faith it is impossible to please God for we are not holy and beyond that if our faith comes from the righteousness of Jesus than the only things that pleases God is the faith we possess in Jesus who is the author and the protector of our faith.
