For all Tom Marquardt knew, Capital Gazette just had an unhappy reader. What he didn't know was that the unhappy reader was about to become a mass murderer.Marquardt, the former editor of Capital Gazette newspapers in Annapolis, MD, was a target of a 38-year-old loner who sought to avenge a 2011 article that reported the reader's conviction of sexually harassing a former high school classmate. For years the man sued the editor, the reporter and the newspaper for defamation, then took to Twitter (now X) to lash out against the editor and reporter. Representing himself in court, his lawsuit rambled and failed to persuade a judge who easily dismissed it. He spent the next three years silently plotting his attack. On June 28, 2018, he blasted his way through the locked doors of Capital Gazette offices and killed five employees. He called 911 to confess, then hid under a desk while waiting to surrender to approaching police.Marquardt spent two years reviewing police and court files, eyewitness accounts, the killer's interview with a state psychiatrist and video footage to chronicle in stunning detail what lead up to the crime and how the killer escaped detection.“Pressed to Kill: Inside Newspapers' Worst Mass Murder” is a chilling account of the worst mass murder at an American newspaper, but more so it is about the lives of those who died, their heroism on that day, and the remarkable response from a community who rushed to its side. We recently used the Dear Brightly service to try Night Shift- a dermatologist formulated tretimoin serum — and this stuff is terrific. Tretinoin is actually the only FDA approved treatment for photoaging. Longterm exposure to the sun damages the skin, it causes fine lines and wrinkles big pores and dark spots. Tretinoin reverses that. Kevin and I saw that for ourselves when we used Night Shift. I am loving how my skin looks right now-- smaller pores, less noticeable fine linesThe catch is you can't walk into a store and buy a tretinoin serum. You need a doctors prescription. Dear Brightly will arrange for arrange for you to have a telehealth appointment with a doctor who will decide what formulation of tretinoin is best for you. After that, your serum will be straight to your door. Confessed mass murderer Jarrod Ramos had a long-running feud with The Capital Gazette. Ramos thought an article about him made him look “crazy” so he demanded a retraction and apology. When he didn't get either, he sued the newspaper and the reporter for defamation. A judge dismissed his case and when Ramos exhausted his appeals, he withdrew from the world — living like a hermit. He stayed at home with his dying cat as his only companion, planning his revenge against The Capital Gazette for two years. When he finally took her to be euthanized, he was ready to launch his plan to kill as many people as he could at the newspaper. In this episode, you'll hear about Ramos from his younger sister, who has testified in the trial. Police witnesses talk about his reaction when he was apprehended and questioned. Ramos pleaded guilty to murder in the shooting deaths of 5 people on June 28, 2018, but his lawyers are asking the jury in this trial to find him “Not Criminally Responsible.” You'll find out what the law requires for this insanity defense to succeed. You can begin to decide for yourself if Ramos suffers from mental disorders or just wants to appear that way.

In late June 2018, five people were murdered by an active shooter walking through their offices at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland. Prosecutors say he blocked the exit so the victims couldn't escape.  The defendant, Jarrod Ramos, pleaded guilty to the murders but his lawyers now argue he's not “criminally responsible” — Maryland's version of the Insanity Defense. Prosecutors contend that his attack was planned in a “calculating and methodical” manner because the paper wrote unfavorable articles about him. Former TV reporter and lawyer Chris Gordon covered the crime. Now, he's covering the trial in this exclusive podcast from Voxtopica and Chris Gordon News. Listen as he explains the impact of the testimony and evidence inside the courtroom, bringing his unique perspective to the trial.
