We all love the Light House Bistro...right? Well, I have news for you! Rise & Shine Bakery is the latest social enterprise, and it is the result of the two women who made the Light House Bistro such a success. In a nutshell, Rise & Shine Bakery is a place for anyone who has a barrier to employment, enabling them to learn a desired trade in a very in-demand field--baking! Today, we sit down with Elizabeth Kinney and Pam Siemer to discuss how this program is changing lives while contributing to the waistlines of many! The twelve-week program is offered at no cost to participants; in fact, they receive a small weekly stipend. If transportation is a problem, a van can help get you to and from the program. So who is eligible? Anyone who has a barrier to employment--people in recovery, re-entering from incarceration, homelessness, domestic abuse victims, and even folks with autism. So, how can we support the effort? Eat--that's easy. Donate--the Dunleavy Family Foundation has offered up to a $1 million matching grant, so your money is worth twice as much! Or the easiest way--spread the word to your neighbors, family, and those in the hospitality business who might like to have some yummy baked goods! The end goal is to purchase a building with a commercial kitchen in the back and a retail store in the front, but for now, they are working from the Masonic Lodge in Odenton. There's so much goodness wrapped up in this venture (maybe more than in their signature cookie). Have a listen and then go and get some cookies!! WYPR's news partner at the Baltimore Banner reports this morning that Baltimore State's Attorney Ivan Bates has dropped the case against Keith Davis, who has already been tried four times for the murder of Kevin Jones in 2015.During his campaign for State's Attorney, Bates had indicated that he would drop the charges against Davis. He recused himself from the review process of the case, which took place after he took office early this month. Former State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby has long held that Davis is guilty of this crime, and she was planning on re-trying him in May of this year. In two of Davis' four trials, juries were not able to come to a unanimous verdict. In the other two trials in which juries did reach a guilty verdict, judges overturned those verdicts. The Banner is also reporting that yesterday, The Baltimore State's Attorney's Office declined to file criminal charges against two Baltimore Police officers who shot and killed Donnell Rochester. That shooting was the subject of several protests. An investigative report concluded that in February of last year, Rochester, an 18 year-old from Odenton, was driving in the direction of an officer when police opened fire. Prosecutors concluded that the shooting was lawful self-defense. This week, there were leadership shake-ups at two city agencies. Jason Mitchell, who came to Baltimore from Oakland, California, 20 months ago, announced that in April, he will resign his position as the Director of the Department of Public Works. And Donna Drew Sawyer, the CEO of the Baltimore Office of Promotion and Arts was forced out of her position after Mayor Brandon Scott demanded her resignation. For some informed perspectives on these developments, Tom turns to two Baltimore City Councilmen: Zeke Cohen, who represents District 1 in south Baltimore, and Isaac "Yitzy" Schleifer, who represents District 5 in northwest Baltimore. Ep. #68 – Robert Cradle is the Founder of Rob's Barbershop Community Foundation.  Rob started out as an owner of a barbershop in Odenton, Maryland. In fact, he was the first Black man to open a barbershop in that area. As the shop grew into a successful establishment, Rob discovered there was a homeless shelter close by with individuals who couldn't afford his services. So he decided to use his shop as the groundwork to build a community friendly human service organization. Rob eventually closed his shop and focused his efforts on starting an organization that would allow him to expand his dedication to serving the community. He works with clients of residential, transitional, emergency housing facilities and public schools and builds barbershops and hair salons in their facility. He also builds dog grooming stations. Scott Smolen established his roots in the business world by cutting lawns in his hometown of Bowie. When Scott was in middle school, he started a landscaping business with one employee—himself—and no plans for expansion. He was just looking to make a few bucks before going back to school. By the end of the summer, the business began to take root in the community, and Scott envisioned for the first time a future for himself as an entrepreneur. Over the next decade, the business grew strong throughout Bowie, Crofton, Gambrills, and Odenton. It had 25 employees and a long list of satisfied customers when Scott sold the company. The experience gave him a solid foundation for success as a businessman and allowed him to branch out to pursue other business opportunities and interests. Scott moved from Bowie to Piney Orchard and decided to pursue a new career in computer networking. Although he enjoys computers and networks, it lacked the personal element that Scott had come to enjoy as he built his landscaping business. After careful consideration, he decided to begin his career in real estate in 1999 with ReMax and has never looked back.   Listen to this informative Grow Your Business and Grow Your Wealth podcast episode with Scott Smolen about buying and selling real estate.   Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week’s show: ●    How the first step in selling your home is finding out what your home is worth. ●    Why you should reach out to a realtor before putting your house on the market. ●    How you can talk to a realtor about buying a house before securing financing. ●    How looking at homes has changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. ●    Why selling houses can be emotional experiences for homeowners.   Connect with Scott: Links Mentioned: scottsmolen.com Guest Contact Info: Twitter @SBSmolen Instagram @scott_smolen Facebook facebook.com/ScottSmolenRealtor LinkedIn linkedin.com/in/remaxscottsmolen Connect with Gary: Website sbadvisors.cc/ Facebook facebook.com/SmallBusinessAdvisors LinkedIn linkedin.com/in/gary-d-heldt-jr-388a051/ Learn more about your ad choices. DC Beer's Richard and Adam speak with Earl Holman and Dan Messeca about the history and beer offerings at Crooked Crab Brewing Company in Odenton, Maryland. Approaching its two-year anniversary, Crooked Crab has found its identity as a brewery that offers something for everyone. It always has at least a dozen beers on tap and will continue to create more high-quality brews in the future.A College Dream Come TrueEarl, Dan, and their friend Alex Josephs became close friends while attending the University of Maryland in the mid-2000s. Over a few rounds of golf and a few more rounds of beer, they started talking about eventually starting a brewery. Ten years later, in August 2015, they began developing business plans to open their brewery. Two and a half years later, on February 15, 2018, they officially opened Crooked Crab.Despite its name, Crooked Crab does not cook crabs, nor does it brew crabs (as the owners have informed disappointed inquirers). Instead, Earl, Dan, and Alex came up with Crooked Crab as an alliterative tribute to Maryland's crab scene.Something for EveryoneCrooked Crab hosts a 15-barrel system brew house, which allows the brewmaster, Adam Osborn, to constantly brew new beers, while also maintaining five flagship beers served year-round. The Maryland brewery also hosts a large tap room that has become a popular gathering place for Odenton locals.Crooked Crab's five flagship beers are Crooked Cream Ale (a light, easy cream ale), Haze for Days (a hazy IPA), I Fought the Claw (a traditional west-coast IPA), Chuck Brown Ale (a brown ale), and High Joltage (a coffee stout). In addition to these year-round beers, Crooked Crab usually offers around ten seasonal/experimental beers on tap at all times. The Crooked Crab team likes to get creative when creating beer names. Many are music-inspired, like Chuck Brown Ale (the Godfather of go-go music), Started from the Bottom Lager (a tribute to Drake), and I Fought the Claw (a spin on The Clash's I Fought the Law). Some other favorites are a Bohemian Pils called Pils Bo Baggins and a locally sourced pumpkin brew called Straight Outta Odenton. Coming Soon to Crooked CrabIn the coming months, Earl, Dan, and Alex look to continue to build a diverse offering of brews, possibly looking to focus a bit more on barrel-aged beers and lagers.Crooked Crab is available in draft and cans in over 100 locations in Maryland and DC. And their canned offerings are growing. They just recently had a canned release of two flagship beers, High Joltage and Haze for Days, and are looking to do a canned release of an imperial fruited sour and hazy double IPA in early February. Crooked Crab is also celebrating its two-year anniversary on February 15. Come and join the party at the Maryland brewery! You can catch up on all the DC Beer Show episodes here, and subscribe to our weekly newsletter, the DC Beer Weekly Pour.

Tyler Balderson, Tree Hugger and Arboriculturist at Bartlett Tree Experts, on the importance of knowing your trees~ "Being a board certified master arborist, the most important part is to be able to identify the tree. Each tree has either its mechanism of growth, or its concerns that I need to identify for the client, but there's also bad trees, there are trees we don't want on your property, and we call those invasive species. . . they can impact the health and growth of a tree that we do want." Tyler Balderson - Tree Hugger and Arboriculturist, Bartlett Tree Experts and host Andy Ockershausen in-studio interview Andy Ockershausen: This is Our Town, and this Andy Ockershausen. And I'm just so excited to welcome a very special guest, my favorite tree hugger. And I use that term in all affection. This man is a very, very famous forester. He's famous because I think he's famous. We found him as the local manager at Bartlett Tree Experts about probably 15 to 20 years ago, Tyler. It's been a great relationship. Tyler Balderson, welcome to Our Town. Tyler Balderson: Thanks for having me. Andy Ockershausen: Isn't this a great town to have Our Town? Tyler Balderson: It's a great town. Andy Ockershausen: Even though we're familiar with you with Anne Arundel County, that's part of Our Town. We've always considered it that. Odenton where you had some ... that's where your office is, in Odenton. Tyler Balderson: That is correct. Andy Ockershausen: But you're a local yokel. Tyler Balderson is Homegrown, A Local Yokel Tyler Balderson: I'm a local yokel. Born and raised. Andy Ockershausen: In Bethesda. Tyler Balderson: In Bethesda, yep. Andy Ockershausen: Went to the school in Bethesda, and your family ... and your father, Andy, is a business man in Bethesda, he had your company before you were born, I would imagine. Tyler Balderson: He did. He's a landscape architect. He's been practicing it for over 40 years now. Andy Ockershausen: And he decided that you'd be a tree person, but you're not an architect, you're a forester. Balderson is a Natural Born Tree Hugger Tyler Balderson: That is correct. Yeah, I was born and raised in a nursery, where he founded our house, and so born and raised around trees. Naturally, I'm going to take care of them. Andy Ockershausen: Did you cut down trees to build your house? Tyler Balderson: No. I'm a tree hugger. I don't cut trees. Andy Ockershausen: You did just the opposite. You would've loved George Washington, right, he cut down a tree and his parents put him in trouble. Tyler Balderson: That is correct. Andy Ockershausen: That's part of Our Town, too, Mount Vernon, you know. First Professional Gig - Elm Trees at Mount Vernon Tyler Balderson: Mount Vernon, we take care of the trees at Mount Vernon. Andy Ockershausen: Is that right? Tyler Balderson: Absolutely. Andy Ockershausen: Your company does? Tyler Balderson: Yep, I personally have been injecting those elm trees for years before, when I got started in tree care, so I personally had taken care of those trees for Mount Vernon. Andy Ockershausen: When you were in Bethesda? Tyler Balderson: Mm-hmm (affirmative), Bethesda, yep, when I first started out. Andy Ockershausen: Well, you've always lived in Bethesda before you went to college, correct? Tyler Balderson: Correct. Our Town Legacy - Three Generations Andy Ockershausen: And the family is back, and your grandfather was born in the city, correct? Tyler Balderson: Correct, yeah. Andy Ockershausen: Within the city limits.

I’m Theo Mayer - the Chief Technologist for the Commission and your host. Welcome to the show. [MUSIC] Preface The United States constitutional Bill of rights was passed and adopted on December 15, 1791 This included the first amendment which reads: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances 126 years later, in 1917, under the pressures of entering WW1 - this constitutional right of the American people came under attack in profound ways. It began in June of 1917 with the passage of the Espionage Act, prohibiting any American from saying or doing anything to undermine the war effort, with the threat of 20 years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both  .   4 months later, in October 1917, congress followed up with the “Trading with the Enemy Act “, which empowered the government to confiscate the property of any person who engages in trade or any other form of financial transaction with an enemy nation during wartime. Overall, about $500 million worth of property was seized by the federal government in World War I from german immigrants and companies with ties to enemy nations, an amount equal to the entire federal budget before the War. But the most onerous attack on the first amendment was coming. With that as background let's jump into our Centennial Time Machine and roll back 100 years ago this week to learn more about the new Sedition Act! [MUSIC TRANSITION] [SOUND EFFECT] [TRANSITION] World War One THEN 100 Year Ago This Week [SOUND EFFECT] Dateline: May 21, 1918 A tiny obscure 4 line article appears in the New York times with the headline: President Signs Sedition Bill The entire article reads: President Wilson today signed the Sedition bill, giving the government wide powers to punish disloyal acts and utterances. Let me read that again… “Giving the government wide powers to punish disloyal acts and utterances.” That sounds downright unconstitutional… and if I had said that in May of 1918, I could have been prosecuted, fined $10,000 (the equivalent of $180,000 today) and imprisoned for up to 30 years! Though President Wilson and Congress regarded the Sedition Act as crucial in order to stifle the spread of dissent within the country in that time of war, modern legal scholars consider the act as contrary to the letter and spirit of the U.S. Constitution, namely to the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights. A part of the act also allowed the Postmaster General to refuse to deliver mail that met those same standards for punishable speech or opinion effectively blocking the mail dissemination of dissenting newspapers, pamphlets and flyers. It was directly applied to trying to control the socialist leaning organized labor movement, and one of the most famous prosecutions under the Sedition Act during World War I was that of Eugene V. Debs, a pacifist labor organizer and founder of the International Workers of the World (the IWW) who had run for president in 1900 as a Social Democrat and in 1904, 1908 and 1912 on the Socialist Party of America ticket. After delivering an anti-war speech in June 1918 in Canton, Ohio, Debs was arrested, tried and sentenced to 10 years in prison under the Sedition Act. Debs appealed the decision, and the case eventually reached the U.S. Supreme Court, in January of 1919. In March of 1919, 101 years ago this month the court ruled Debs had acted with the intention of obstructing the war effort and upheld his conviction. In the decision, Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes referred to the earlier landmark case of Schenck v. United States (1919), when Charles Schenck, also a Socialist, had been found guilty under the Espionage Act after distributing a flyer urging recently drafted men to oppose the U.S. conscription policy. In this decision, Holmes maintained that freedom of speech and press could be constrained in certain instances, and that The question in every case is whether the words used are used in such circumstances and are of such a nature as to create a clear and present danger ---  which will bring about the substantive evils that Congress has a right to prevent.   Eugene Debs’ sentence was commuted a few years later in 1921 when the Sedition Act was repealed by Congress. Major portions of the Espionage Act remain part of United States law to the present day, although the crime of sedition was largely eliminated by a famous libel case  in 1964, which determined that the press’s criticism of public officials was protected speech under the First Amendment — unless a plaintiff could prove that the statements were made maliciously or with reckless disregard for the truth—. Your right to free speech.. A very precious right and one that was effectively legislated against 100 years ago this week, in the war that changed the world! We have links in the podcast notes a BUNCH of articles from the NY times where the espionage, trading with the enemy and sedition acts were applied. Though unflappable doesn’t enter the English lexicon until the 1950s, it is derived from a WWI era phrase, “to be in a flap”. Usually defined as “to be worried”, the phrase “to be in a flap” has its origins in the Royal Navy around 1916. Taken from the frantic flapping birds would perform as they attempted to fly, the phrase spread among the ground troops as well. And there was a lot to be in a flap about during the war -- constant artillery barrages, snipers taking shots round the clock, poor food and living conditions -- the phrase probably got a lot of use in the trenches. “To be in a flap” and Unflappable - this week’s phrases for speaking WW1. Mothers Day and the Harlem Hellfighters Hi Theo -- Last weekend was Mother’s Day -- a holiday dear to doughboys in europe a hundred years ago as much as it is to us today. This week we shared an article from historian and WW1 Centennial Commission Historical Advisor Mitchell Yockelson published in the New York Times. The article entitled “Dear Mom, the War’s Going Great” surveys Mother’s Day correspondances during war time, from General Pershing down to the humblest of doughboys. The Army promoted what it called Mothers Letters, joined in a campaign by the YMCA and Red Cross. Read the article at the link in the podcast notes.   Finally -- this week was the centennial of a harrowing incident that helped establish the reputation of the Harlem Hellfighters. On the night of May 15, 1918, Pvt. Henry Johnson and Needham Roberts, members of the all-black 369th Infantry Regiment, found themselves fighting for their lives against 20 German Soldiers out in front of their unit's trench line. Johnson fired the three rounds in his French-made rifle, tossed all his hand grenades and then grabbed his Army-issue bolo knife and started stabbing.   Both survived the incident -- and Johnson earned himself the nickname Black Death for his ferocious stand. The question of whether the African American unit would fight as well as any other was answered by his actions in the darkness of May 15th. Read more about the intense engagement, and the Hellfighters’ subsequent struggles upon returning to civilian life, by following the link in the podcast notes. That’s it for this week in the Buzz. Sunday, March 25, 2018 was Maryland Day, when the first European settlers landed in the province of Maryland on that date in 1634. To celebrate, I headed back to Odenton to see the guys at Crooked Crab Brewing. If you're a long-time listener, first-time caller of the Naptown Pintcast, you'll probably recall that I hung out with the Crooked Crab crew.  Leaving aside the fact that I clearly didn't know much about podcasting when we first recorded -- "Dude, the wind won't ruin the audio," I said. "It'll be fine, it's not a big deal!" -- it was an exciting milestone. Not only for them, because they were looking forward to opening, but also for Anne Arundel County.  About seven months later, they've opened their doors, and the community -- businesses and beer drinkers alike -- have welcomed them with open arms.  So, I thought I would check in with them to see how things have been going. Now that they're open, is the reality of owning a brewery living up to their dream?
