In this special episode, I sat down with Ryan Cassata to talk about what it means to be so publicly visible while feeling like you have to hide parts of who you are. Season 2, Episode 4, “Growing Up In the Trans Spotlight: Transcending Expectations with Ryan Cassata” is specifically Ryan's story but it is also many of ours too. Of taking on the pressure of what society has put on us for far too long, confronting that, and making our lives unapologetically our own. Both our public and personal lives. Ryan Cassata came into the trans spotlight at 15 when he was interviewed on Larry King and since then has made his dreams come true with multiple acclaimed albums, as a leading actor in independent film, and as an award-winning LGBTQ activist, speaker, and writer. This first part of his podcast, he discusses more what it's been like to be seen and expected to present himself as if he were perpetually that same 15-year old when he's been an adult legally for the last 10 years. As a 28 year old trans celebrity 28, Ryan speaks freely about what his life is like now. And his departure from his older image. He explains the kink and BDSM culture in his recently-released music video “Coffin.” And we both talk about how other celebrities who have a primarily youthful fan base such as Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X have dealt with their own fame and their responsibility to their fans. In this section “Kink / BDSM Culture” we discuss body positivity and staying grounded and feeling safe and healthy in a queer / trans body, sex positivity, and the historical lineage and importance of kink and BDSM in LGBTQ culture. The second section of Part 1 “Creating Alternatives to Transnormativity and Transmedicalism” describes how heteronormativity, homonormativity has effected the trans community and trans youth by confronting transnormativity and the harmful beliefs of transmedicalists. Ryan offers healthy alternatives to this perspective for trans and gender non-conforming youth which is loving yourself and being around people whom you trust. A Georgia trans teen takes a solitary stand against the high school bullies who assaulted her, while in Wisconsin the attack on a trans student sparks a walkout by his allies demanding a safe school for all. Ryan Cassata's latest album, Magical Miracle Mile, shows how much he's grown since his debut as a 17-year-old trans artist (interviewed in November 2011 by JD Doyle). Plus a “Rainbow Minute” on the career of gay illustrator Richard Amsel! And in NewsWrap: Thailand's top court pushes marriage equality to lawmakers, the IOC changes the game for trans and intersex Olympians, the U.S. Health Department kills Trump era religious bias, Russian authorities axe an LGBTQ film fest website, a notoriously homophobic Australian town turns a rainbow leaf, and more international LGBTQ news reported this week by MR Raquel and Michael LeBeau (produced by Brian DeShazor). For centuries musicians have defied gender boundaries to create some of the most evocative and provocative art and music. Journalist and culture critic Laura Snapes joins the dots of a fascinating musical history that encompasses musical icons such as Ma Rainey, Little Richard, Lou Reed, the Pet Shop Boys, Grace Jones and Madonna, and looks at how today's musicians use music and performance to express who their own gender and sexuality. In recent years the issue of gender and identity has been a hot topic in the musical landscape and beyond. From niche publications to tabloids and political debate, issues surrounding gender identity and how it influences both personal and social life have been widely publicised. Amid the deeply complex personal world of gender identity and the often ruthlessly myopic world of the music industry, a new generation of artists are using music for fearless expressions of their gender and sexuality that break beyond the archetypes set by their forebears. Rock Transition speaks with artists such as garage maverick Ezra Furman, Canadian pop stars Tegan and Sara, musician and author CN Lester, and musician and activist Ryan Cassata to understand why music offers an exciting platform to express and explore gender identity and sexuality - and asks how these artists can resist being marginalised and commodified by an industry keen to capitalise on a hot topic.
