I was sort of in the virtual presence of excellence with the legendary actress Susan Lanier from Wes Craven's “The Hills Have Eyes” (1977). I must admit that I was star-struck (again) and I am not sure why I keep having that issue. However, it was an absolute honor and pleasure to speak to her about her role in the classic horror. Talking to her about her past and current roles was nothing but enlightening; talking about some behind-the-scenes secrets and how hard it was to film in the desert despite the hot and cold conditions. As austere as the environment can be, she sure as hell pulled it off, which makes me respect her a whole lot more. Susan and I also discussed how to be a successful actress; you have to give it all, your 100% in order to make yourself stand out. In my opinion, I can tell by an actor's body language if they want to be there or not. Any budding actors out there need to listen to Susan's advice. Make sure to follow Susan on social media, Facebook and Instagram. She also acts in the movie Black Mass alongside Lisa Wilcox, Jeremy London, Lew Temple, Devanny Pinn, and a lot more renowned actors. There is a movie in post-production called “The Boatyard” that she also stars in, be sure to check out the trailer and support Susan. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/southjerseyhorror/message

We have sort of a bonus episode for you this week. Here's a little back story: We began working on an article for our blog about two weeks ago - an article that would highlight a few great spots around Lake Norman to check out for St. Patrick's Day this year. We reached out to these places for some information to include for the article, and one of those places BoatYard Lake Norman, responded with a phone call. Chris Boukedes, the owner of BoatYard Lake Norman called and we talked for quite some time. We've wanted to feature BoatYard on the podcast since beginning this journey almost a year ago, and invited Chris to join me for a recording - we also hatched a plan to get it published in time for this big St. Patty's week. Hence the bonus episode. Chris's background in the restaurant and bar business is prolific, and there's no way we could cover his career in less than an hour, but suffice it to say he knows a thing or two about how to build a successful venue. In this episode, Chris shares the story of BoatYard Lake Norman and some plans he and his team have in store for the future. Stay with us until the end of this episode and we'll share BoatYard's St. Patty's Day plans and schedule of events. For now, enjoy getting to know Chris Boukedes, owner of BoatYard Lake Norman!BoatYard Lake Normanhttps://boatyardlkn.com/18418 Statesville RoadCornelius, NC  28031IG: @boatyardlknFB: https://www.facebook.com/BoatYardEatsLKNZoey's Nonprofit:Yay!DAYIG: @yaydaylifeFB: https://www.facebook.com/yaydaylife/Thanks to local businesses:Carolina Premium BeverageLake Norman ChamberRecommended reading:Stop Doing That Sh*t by Gary John Bishop(We may receive a monetary commission if you buy something or take an action after clicking one of these links. When COVID-19 first hit in March of 2020, Stephen Rice, the City of Annapolis Economic Development Manager knew he had to get to work.  Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckely formed a small business task force chaired by Dick Franyo working alongside of Rice to make sure our busiensses stayed afloat.  Today, not one restaurant in the City has closed. Recently, we grabbed a lunch with Dick Franyo, the owner of the Boatyard Bar & Grille in Eastport to discuss his thoughts about how the Boatyard remained as vibrant as possible, the challenges he faced and how they steered the task force. We ate lunch in the bustling tent out front --hence the background noise. Joining us on the phone was Stephen Rice from the City of Annapolis to discuss what came out of the task force, what was immediately implemented, the lifelines extended to local businesses and his forecast looking into the future! Have a listen, but be sure to bookmark the following links! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.Living on an island with a boatyard you get to see barges, tugs, and ferries at anchor in Holmes Harbor waiting to be hauled up into Nichols Brothers Boatyard. Nichols Brothers constructs, converts, repairs, and services boats. But not all boats. Only those that fit their capacity and capability, their boatyard. This is not about looking for the right clients; it’s about knowing the client *you* are - the right boat for the boatyard. I’m betting you’ve had the experience of someone saying to you: "Yeah, sure we can handle that, tackle that, produce that...."  only to find out the words were hollow. So, what do you look for? Apart from the obvious, look for actions that mimic your values of say, generosity, trust,  responsiveness, and fair play; evidence that you and your business are valued and appreciated; practicing the Old World skill of measure twice and cut once; and, can demonstrate knowing how and when to suggest options and alternatives to your project. Most importantly, having the integrity to refer you to a competitor if they can’t take your business but trust someone who can.  Otherwise, this is not your boatyard. This is the place to thrive together. Come for the stories - stay for the magic. You’re invited to stop by the website and subscribe to stay current with Diane, her journeys, her guests, as well as creativity, imagination, walking, stories, camaraderie, and so much more: Quarter Moon Story ArtsProduction Team: Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer’s Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 - Present Quarter Moon Story Arts

Will We Make It Out Alive?

Before we begin, tomorrow, June 5th is World Environment Day! This year’s theme is Beat Air Pollution, and some things you can do to celebrate include planting trees, cleaning up trash, or biking to work.To begin the episode, the Poop Detective tells another Thailand story; this time about kayaking in our own urine! We don’t recommend, but we didn’t get sick and had fun.In our restoration segment, the Poop Detective tells us why it’s bad to swim in urine and poop (and other pollution). Some of these reasons include viruses, pathogens and parasites.Other ways to stay healthy at the beach include leaving the beach and public access sites cleaner than you found them, and reporting spills. If you see something spilled in the water or at a Washington beach contact the Department of Ecology’s Spill Response line for investigation and follow-up at 1-800-OILS-911 (https://ecology.wa.gov/About-us/Get-involved/Report-an-environmental-issue/Report-a-spill).You can also check local monitoring program websites before you head out to make sure the beach is safe for swimming (at least for those beaches that have funding for monitoring). This includes statewide monitoring Beach Monitoring Programs in Washington and Oregon. Even British Columbia has some beach monitoring programs mostly focused in the Greater Vancouver and Victoria areas. Most swimming related monitoring programs in the Pacific Northwest are focused on sampling between Memorial Day to Labor Day, which is typical to the time when it is potentially warm enough for swimming. The Poop Detective then tells us about the BEACH Act and related programs. These beach monitoring programs each produce a proposed list of monitoring locations and the public is invited to provide input on the selection of monitoring sites, biannually. You can maintain contact with the Washington Beach Program through their blog, fecal matters (Amy is upset someone beat her to this title) or on their social media sites. Find out about the health of beaches in your area through their interactive map.The Oregon Beach Monitoring Program monitors waters along its coastline. In Oregon, the public is guaranteed free and uninterrupted use of all beaches along the coastline; therefore, beach advisories are issued but closings are not. They do not have an interactive map, so you have to figure out where the beaches are on your own. What’s up, Oregon??? The Magical Mapper is disappointed in you.Surfrider also have a volunteer beach monitoring program called the Blue Water Task Force. They provide beach monitoring throughout the US and provide an interactive map. There are some local jurisdictions, like King County, which also have local river or lake monitoring programs. Check your local government website to see if they have monitoring program results available. The Poop Detective then makes us sad while warning us of the dangers of freshwater harmful algal blooms, which can be toxic to humans and pets. Both Washington and Oregon have limited Freshwater Toxic Algae monitoring programs, which include health advisories and closures of water bodies.Learn about more ways beaches can be harmful in the episode, and also find out which beaches The Poop Detective and The Magical Mapper think are #sleg!Speaking of beaches, the Washington Department of Ecology is running a campaign this summer for people to share photos and videos of the Washington Coast and Puget Sound on Twitter with the hashtag #WAbeaches and the location. They’ll be sharing them throughout the summer. Share no matter what the weather! In the GIS section, the Magical Mapper gets some style (files)! Head over to the GIS Tools blog for more.In our final segment, the Magical Mapper lets you know about Clean Marinas, which is a voluntary eco-certification program. There are programs in several US states as well as in British Columbia and around the globe.Gig Harbor Marina & Boatyard is the latest in Washington to receive Clean Marina certification, on October 11, 2018. Way to go, Gig Harbor! There are a lot of benefits to becoming a clean marina, including cleaner water and reduced costs! If you don’t own or operate a marina you can help your local marina get certified (unless they already are, in which case you should support them). If you’re in Washington or Oregon, or even in British Columbia, local program websites have all sorts of helpful information. Thanks for joining us, and here are a few extra links just for fun!Fun Beach trivia game from National GeographicBeach FactsMore Beach FactsCat Fact 1Cat Fact 2

The second part of the history of the Miami River describes the evolution of the river from the mid-1800s through modern times. Prior to the Brickells arriving to the area, the big cash crop in the area was the cultivation and processing of the cyad plant, known as Coontie. It was one of the few industries that provided trade for the area. After the Tuttles and Brickells came to an agreement with Henry Flagler, the river changed dramatically. The news of Flagler extending his railway to what would become the city of Miami attracted a lot of new people. The first port of Miami was setup along the north bank of the river near today’s Miami Avenue as a result of the influx of civilization to a once desolate paradise. Nathan Heber is the Founder and CEO of Boatyard, the world's first on-demand marketplace for recreational boating. The Boatyard app makes it easy for boaters to find and book qualified marine professionals for services ranging from fuel delivery to cleaning to captaining a boat. Boatyard also has a B2B application. Boatyard for Business provides marine professionals with an easy-to-use platform for automating their admin tasks, while helping them to deliver remarkable customer service experiences to their boat owners.  Nathan grew up in Miami Beach and has been boating since he was a child. Later in life, he took up sailing and has been hooked ever since. An avid kite surfer, Nathan has found that being on and around the water is an invaluable component of a happy life for him and his family. We discussed his sailing adventures, the founding of boatyard and how it helps both boaters and marine professionals, ways to make the boating lifestyle accessible, and much more. Enjoy! On growing up in Miami Beach…..You grow up on boats. I’ve been boating my entire life. Seven years ago my wife bought me sailing lessons and I’ve been sailing ever since. On learning to boat and sail.....I was probably too young to remember how I learned to boat. Sailing has a lot more components. Understanding angles of wind and all the technical stuff that goes into learning to sail, I’d have to say learning to sail is harder. We took a private lesson, just me and my wife and the teacher He was an Olympic hopeful who teaches out of 79th Street in Miami. We took 10 or 12 hours with him and then we could pay him to have access to the sailboats and jump on whenever we wanted. On the inspiration for Boatyard.com.....In a way, it started when I was a kid because I’ve been hearing about this pain point my entire life. The sailing lessons led to a series of events that led to the creation of Boatyard. We were taking a trip to the BVI and jokingly she said, "Why don’t we just sail down there.?" It was an off-season time and they agreed to do a short, bareboat charter for us. The two of us went island to island and had the greatest adventure of our lives. When we came back we wanted to rent that same sailboat and it was $800 a day. We thought, if our neighbors knew that we were responsible professionals who were certified sailors I’m sure they would let us rent it for less. But at the time there was no mechanism to do that. I set out to build a peer-to-peer marketplace. I was in an accelerator to do that and kept hearing from our boat owners what a pain it was to service their boats and I saw this big opportunity that wasn’t being tapped. So we pivoted the business and that’s how Boatyard was created. On solving boat owner's biggest headache.....When we originally launched, boat owners were really resigned to word of mouth or google searches to find the providers to service their boats. There’s the old joke the best two days of a boat owner’s life are the day they buy it and the day they sell it and a lot of that has to do with what a pain it is in between to find qualified guys who will show up on time. They’re out there but the average boater has to sift through and find those people that they can trust. We looked at that and said, if we could create a marketplace where we aggregated the best providers we could find and then gave boat owners a really simple user interface where they could place a request and get a qualified service provider, and have a really great experience, we thought we could change the way boat services are ordered.  On what boaters use Boatyard for.....The most popular are fuel and boat washing. We’ve been able to expand our service offering to mechanical service, captains, boating lessons, on water help with Sea Tow and a number of other services. On the reception among boaters.....You have people who are forward thinking and progressive about technology and those people really buy into it. It’s a challenge to get people who aren’t forward thinking to try it but once they do they continue to come back. 80% of our orders come from someone who has ordered from us before. On the reception among marine professionals.....Currently, they don’t really have a great place to put marketing dollars where they’re gonna generate a good ROI. With us, the fees we take are far less than the cost of acquisition for attaining those same customers. In addition to that, they don’t pay us until they make money. We’ve had great experiences and great luck finding amazing providers that are very forward thinking and willing to provide this high level of service that we demand for our users. We’ve even had some customers tell us we’re the reason they didn’t close. On finding qualified service providers.....It’s a challenge across the whole industry. It’s hard for me to understand why that’s happening in such a big way. Boating and boat services is one of those industries where it truly needs a skilled labor set, where having that job can provide someone with a comfortable middle-class lifestyle or more. Some of it comes down to messaging. Letting kids know who are coming out of school or who are in other technical schools about the great opportunities there are in the boat services industry. On helping marine businesses grow.....We’ve recently launched a new platform called Boatyard for Business. It’s a B2B SaaS platform that helps marine professionals manage their service requests. They can basically run their whole business off it. It takes all the admin duties that take up a lot of time and keep the smaller shops from growing and allows them to get it through Boatyard for a small monthly fee. On getting new boaters into the industry.....It's great what you guys are doing with Freedom Boat Club, the launch of all the peer-to-peer boat sharing platforms, Boatsetter, Boatbound, Sailo, and then companies like Dockwa that make it easy to book dockage with the click of a button. One of the biggest things we can do is make boating more accessible which is happening but also just getting more people on the water. We all know it’s not the boat that makes you happy, it’s the experiences that you have. On misconceptions about the boating lifestyle.....Still, a lot of people think that boating is for wealthy people, that it’s intimidating, that it’s not accessible. By having boat clubs and peer to peer and all the tech to make it easier to use the boat, I think that’s going to go a long way towards introducing a lot more people to boating. At Boatyard we think that when you own a boat it shouldn’t be a hassle. You shouldn’t spend your free time fixing it, you should be spending your free time on the water and we’re trying to solve that pain point. On the changing demands of marine customers.....Millennials prize access over ownership. There’s a whole significant portion of our business that comes to us because there’s no one else to talk to. Close to 40% of our orders are placed between 5pm and 9am or over the weekend. I think it’s really important to be able to transact 24 hours a day and make it really easy for customers to connect with you. Customers are having much higher standards as far as customer service goes. If the marine businesses are not doing it now, they’re going to have to in order to make customers happy. On how boating can drive happiness.....They’ve done a ton of studies on what drives true happiness and it all came down to experiences. When you’re planning an experience, you have all the excitement leading up to it, then you have the time on the water, then you get to look back on it fondly. That’s what drives true happiness. That’s what we all need to work on – how to enable more people to have these remarkable experiences on the water. On learning to kitesurf.....I picked it up because I couldn’t sail and boat as much. I couldn’t make a whole day of boating but I could throw the gear in the car, set up, go kiting and come home. Last year was the first time I went kiting off a boat and that was spectacular. I’m a pretty good snowboarder and I surf and it still took me 10 hours to pick up. No matter what, it takes some commitment. Once you learn it you can get much better much quicker. The best thing to do is get a little trainer kite and fly it on the beach. Once you get the kite control down, you can pick up the board part fairly quickly. I have a 9-meter kite, a 12-meter kite, and a 15-meter kite for the light winds. The next thing I want to get into is to learn how to foil. On advice for would-be boaters.....It can fundamentally change your life. When we learned how to sail it gave us something we could enjoy together for the rest of our lives. You’re out there, you’re enjoying the elements. And it opens up a world of new experiences you can have. You can go to new parts of the world and have this incredible experience with this incredible perspective that not everyone can have.   It was so great and uplifting speaking with Nathan. He truly believes that boating and being on the water can lead to a happy life and incredible experiences you will never forget, and is working tirelessly to make those experiences easier to come by. Check out Boatyard and keep an eye out for it in an area near you soon!

On the 21st episode of the Sailing Anarchy Podcast, we go straight to the source for an analysis of the new direction announced last week by the Volvo Ocean Race.  First, Clean updates us on the Podcast's status, tells us his story of hunting and killing a 300 pound alligator in Charleston, and gives us his view on the new Volvo plans.  Then VOR big boss Mark Turner explains the reasons for their decision to use foiling monohulls for the offshore legs and foiling multihulls for the inshore legs of the two or three races following the next one.  Listen for Turner's views on what other options they considered, what the new 60 footer will look like and how it is expected to perform, how the new lease model will effect the organization, and why teams have had such difficulty finding major sponsors.  The discussion moves to the timetable for full flying boats to take over the race and safety considerations between mono and multihulls, and finally what kind of events would make up the more permanent annual racing schedule for VOR teams. Next we spoke to Nick Bice, Director of Operations and founder of the Boatyard, about more technical matters: How, exactly, a new-rules VO60 can be converted to an IMOCA-legal Open 60, what kinds of differences does a Volvo require compared to a singlehanded boat, and a whole lot on foil control systems and logistics for a two-fleet race owned entirely by Volvo.  Clean and Bicey got deep into the subject of the continually shrinking crew component and the impact of this shrinking pool to ocean racing and the sport in general, and plenty more. Finally, we spoke to pro trimmer and former VO70 crew (ABN AMRO2, 2005) and medical officer George Peet on the anniversary of his crewmate Hans Horrovets' death about a race that remains very close to his heart.  GP and Clean got deeper into crewing issues with a general discussion of the state of professional offshore racing as well as the usual pull-no-punches analysis of the new classes with a guy who always tells the truth.  As a bonus, we got Bear - one of the nation's top Moth racers - to give us his America's Cup picks... Enjoy!
