“Hudson Street” was an ABC sitcom that aired for one season in 1995. The show starred Tony Danza as a divorced detective in Hoboken, New Jersey. The series also featured Lori Loughlin as Melanie Clifford, an idealistic crime reporter with whom Tony starts a romance. The show initially received good reviews and placed in the top ten (partly due to its placement between “Roseanne” and “Home Improvement”), however, it struggled to hold on to its lead-in audience. A decline in viewership ultimately led to its cancellation. Does "Hudson Street" live up to the standard of the Danza sitcoms that came before it? Listen as the boys deep dive the show's pilot episode. Starring: Tony Danza, Lori Loughlin, Jerry Adler, Christine Dunford, Frankie J. For this episode of the Data Center Frontier Show Podcast, DCF Editor in Chief Matt Vincent sits down for an instructive chat with Phillip Koblence, a strategic executive and ubiquitous thought leader in the data center and network space. Koblence co-founded NYI in 1996 and has successfully navigated through an ever-shifting infrastructure landscape, growing the company from a single data center in Lower Manhattan to a robust network with executional capabilities in key national and international markets. His leadership, focus on customer experience, and ability to cut through complexity and hype, has positioned NYI as an industry leader in high-touch infrastructure solutions. Koblence is also CEO of Critical Ventures, a consulting agency offering a range of services to help clients, owners and investors optimize the value of critical infrastructure assets. Koblence sits on the DE-CIX North America Advisory Board as well as on the Board of OIX (formerly Open-IX). He is co-founder of the Nomad Futurist Foundation and podcast, designed to demystify the world of critical infrastructure and inspire younger generations to join the industry. The interview begins with a discussion of NYI's entry into 60 Hudson Street and the challenges of retrofitting legacy buildings for modern data center needs, while emphasizing the importance of connectivity and collaboration in the digital infrastructure industry, and highlighted the rapid pace of technological advancements such as AI. Here's a timeline of the podcast's highlights: 2:03 - Koblence discusses NYI's entry into Manhattan's historic colocation and interconnection hub, 60 Hudson Street, emphasizing the importance of connectivity in New York City's digital infrastructure evolution. 6:20 - Koblence elaborates on the challenges and considerations when retrofitting legacy buildings like 60 Hudson for modern data center needs, highlighting the importance of creative solutions and understanding the nuances of different deployments. 11:38 - The discussion turns to an exploration of deploying data centers in skyscrapers, the evolving criticality of digital infrastructure, and the need for redundancy and a "data center mindset" in reckoning with society's reliance on connectivity. 20:02 - Remarks on the rapid pace of technological advancements, specifically the increasing densities of GPUs such as Nvidia's H100, H200, Grace Hopper, and Blackwell chips. 20:32 - More on the exponential increase in densities within the digital infrastructure community and predictions of a future "flattening out" of density growth. 23:59 - Koblence emphasizes the continued relevance of legacy facilities such as 2 megawatt (MW) or 5 MW data centers in modern deployments, particularly in major connectivity hubs. The concept of the edge is also discussed in the context of facilitating connectivity with AI sites. 26:59 - Koblence elaborates on the importance of collaboration and creating cohesive solutions across various data center facilities, while emphasizing the role of NYI as a solutions facilitator and discussing partnerships with Hudson IX and other providers. 31:22 - Koblence elaborates on the mission of the Nomad Futurist foundation to demystify the world of digital infrastructure, highlighting the simplicity of the industry beneath the technical complexities, and emphasizing transparency and accessibility in making connectivity and digital infrastructure understandable and available. Welcome to Bri Books! Our Wine Week series on the podcast has made me tipsy. As I burrow deeper into the wine world, I feel like every day I find a new grape, region, or literally hectare that I didn't know existed before. Wine is like traveling the world in a glass. Today's episode is all about the magical world of Swiss wine. In this episode, I'm sharing the best Swiss wines worth your money (and where to buy/ taste them), and revealing a bit about the history and significance of Swiss wine. The Swiss like to keep secrets. Of the 1.07 million hectolitres of wine produced in Switzerland each year, 98% is consumed within the country. Nonetheless, Swiss wines have become an open secret in the wine world. With six wine-growing regions and over 250 grapes being cultivated, Switzerland boasts an enormous variety of different terroirs. Today, there are six winemaking regions across Switzerland — Geneva, Three Lakes, German Switzerland, Ticino, Vaud, and Valais. In 2024, I want to sample the variety of St. Gallen wines in the Rhine valley and Lake Zurich regions; explore the vineyards of Geneva via TukTuk; take a luxurious bike ride through the Ticino region; and visit the Carnotzet of the Hotel de Ville in Lausanne where I can immerse myself in Lausanne's vineyard history. I want to indulge in Zurich's wine at vineyards, wine bars, and the Expovina Wine Fair. I sincerely see Switzerland in my future! All About Chasselas Grape: The Workhorse of Swiss Wine Chasselas is an indigenous Swiss white grape variety. A white grape grown all over the world, Chasselas grape is called Fendant in Switzerland and is the most widely planted variety in the country. Chasselas is a soft, often herbaceous wine, often consumed over pots of fondue and trays of raclette. Lightly spritzy, chalky, with hints of Swiss meadow herbs and a tart palate, this grape is like a breath of fresh air. Swiss Wines Worth Tasting Robin de Vignes, Vilette 2022 (Chasselas, Lavaux AOC): This wine is 100% Chasselas grape variety, and boasts a rich aroma of citrus and apple. The mineralogy is out of this world! This is the perfect wine for an early spring or early summer dinner party. Dôle des Monts Red, Gilliard 2020 (Valais AOC, Pinot Noir/Gamay): Consider this the perfect Swiss red wine for easy drinking. With elegant flavors of Gamay and Pinot Noir grapes, this full-bodied yet lightweight wine is superbly blended with harmonious tannins. It's perfect for pairing with red and white meat, as well as hard and soft cheeses. The deep ruby red hue gives way to a lightly fragranced wine with hints of ripe fruits. Weingut Fromm 2018 Pinot Noir Village (Pinot Noir, Graubunden): This is another excellent ‘everyday' wine from Switzerland. The grapes for Village are spontaneously fermented in open oak vats with 2 weeks of maceration. This light and cherry-driven Pinot Noir has slight acidity, and I love the muted flavors of black cherry and blackberries. The wine has an earthy texture with a slight touch of spice, but retains smooth, balanced tannins. Highly recommend! Caves du Paradis: Avalanche Fendant 2022, (Valais): This is a truly magical Swiss wine. The lemon flavors on the palette give way to delightful minimality and hints of nuttiness on the finish. I love this wine as an aperitif, or as a perfect mate for a fish course. The flavors also compliment Swiss culinary staples: raclette and fondue. I can't wait to crack open a bottle during the vernal equinox. My Favorite Spot for All Things Swiss Wine: The Lavaux Wine Bar in NYC The Lavaux Wine Bar was founded by three Swiss culinary and wine afficionados who wanted to bring the warmth, hospitality, and time-honored wine traditions of Switzerland to NYC. The name, 'The Lavaux Wine Bar,' pays tribute to the vineyards of Lavaux, Switzerland. It's my go-to spot for all things Swiss: food, cheese, and, of course, wine. I recommend a Swiss wine flight at The Lavaux, located at 630 Hudson Street in New York, NY. Hunter Newby doesn't claim to have invented the Meet-Me Room, but he created one of the first, in the iconic and historical Manhattan facility, 60 Hudson Street, in about 1998 At the time data centers had separate connections from multiple carriers, and linking between those carriers meant running a link between their connection points - and paying them heavily. Hunter set up a room where the networks all met up for physical (layer 0) connections - and the rest is history. It's a well-documented history because he went on to write a series of magazine articles "Meet Me In New York", "Meet Me In Chicago" etc, about interconnection facilities in major US cities. That series is archived on his site, alongside live data of connections for each of those cities from the open peering resource, PeeringDB. Today, there are still not enough Meet-Me rooms. Some US states with large cloud facilities don't have nearby carrier hotels, so local user traffic has to go out to a city like Chicago and back. Hunter's wants to foster neutral carrier hotels where there are none. Why is 60 Hudson Street the Ellis Island of the Internet? And did Hunter ever write "Meet Me In St Louis"? Listen in, and meet Hunter Newby..
Kevin VanHentenryck was born May 28th 1953 in Ferndale Michigan. Throughout High School, VanHentenryck also raced motorcycles off the road in both Enduros, and Observed Field Trials. While attending the Academy of Dramatic Arts at Oakland University in Michigan, he suffered a crash while practicing, breaking both ankles and his jaw, resulting in a thirteen-month recuperation. When mostly recovered, he moved to NYC to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Art. While there, he saw The Savage Messiah, a film by Ken Russell, at the Little Carnegie Cinema. Of that life-changing experience, he says:“During the course of the film they showed a close-up of a real sculptors hands working a block of marble with a hammer and chisel. I was so turned on to, and by the idea of a rock as a plastic medium. I started haunting The Sculpture House, a sculpture supply place literally around the corner from the Academy. When I had worked up my nerve sufficiently and saved up what I hoped was enough money, I went in and pestered some poor sales girl with every question about stone carving I could think of and walked out with a small square hammer, and three basic chisels. I went and found a rock on the street in the East Village, and I set up a work bench underneath what is now known as the Highline, an elevated railroad line at eleventh Ave. and thirtieth street. In those days, it was an abandoned area on the weekends. The first moment I touched steel-to- stone the most amazing thing happened. You could call it an epiphany, or a revelation… an absolute understanding that THIS was what I was meant to do; that there were angles circling around my head guiding my hands. That moment has powered my whole life to this day.” Within a short time, VanHentenryck switched his primary focus from acting to sculpture in natural stone. Even taking a job in the book dept. of the Met so he could spend every lunch break studying sculpture. Also around this time (1978), he rented a loft in the then abandoned neighborhood of Tribecca, at 151 Hudson Street, across from the Holland tunnel exit, which became his studio. Then in an interesting reversal, Ilze, whom he had met at the Academy, introduced him to Frank Henenlotter, an independent film maker, who offered VanHentenryck the starring role in his film, Basket Case. Low budget and campy, Basket Case won the Best Picture Award at the International Drive-In Movie Awards, and has over the years become a cult classic, and in 2018 was restored by and included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in NYC. VanHentenryck has appeared at horror movie conventions and film festivals world-wide for fans of the film. After four years in Tribecca, the writing was on the wall. SoHo, the next neighborhood north of Tribecca had been discovered. Loft-living was becoming trendy. Robert De Niro moved into a loft a few blocks south of VanHentenryck's studio. The lawyers and yuppies were moving in, rents were going up, and in spite of winning a major lawsuit against his loft lord, he realized his days in Tribecca were drawing to a close. In 1984 he relocated his studio to the mountain top region of the Catskill mountains where he remains to this day producing the finest sculpture and hand-carved signs in the region.Todays Episode is brought to you by Get Slicks -head over to https://www.getslicks.com and check it out!https://www.freehscs.comhttps://www.kevinvanh.comhttps://www.deluxeedition.showhttps://www.twitter.com/deluxediSupport the showCheck out all of our previous shows at https://www.deluxeedition.show
Hudson Street WAS a show. Tony Danza plays yet another character named Tony in this story about a divorced police detective in Hoboken, New Jersey. Finally ready to give love another chance, Tony gets set up on a date with newspaper writer Melanie, played by Lori Loughlin. The catch? He's a tough-on-crime conservative, and she…pretty much just believes in basic civil liberties and due process. In another twist, she lands the city police beat for the New York Times, so now they have to work together! Uh oh… Join Brynn, Aaron and Barry, as they gather evidence for their investigation into why this star-studded sitcom got bumped off after only one season. Today, I'm joined by Tommy Craig, Senior Managing Director at Hines, and Rick Cook, Founding Partner at COOKFOX. Tommy and Rick are both pioneers of the sustainable architecture movement and have joined forces for the 555 Greenwich and 345 Hudson Street project. As it stands, they're two existing buildings that form an entire block in the Hudson Square neighborhood of Manhattan. The goal for 555 Greenwich was to stitch the two buildings together, complete 345 Hudson Street, and face west out towards the Hudson River. The combined buildings are 1.2 million square feet, and as you can imagine, designing that kind of space isn't without its challenges. However, the team at COOKFOX has come up with a way to embrace those constraints and create a thermally active superstructure, the first of its kind in New York City. Rick describes the firm's various efforts to make radical carbon changes and revamp this 100-year-old building to serve the community for the next 10+ decades. We also discuss the importance of mentorship, how their own mentors have impacted their career development, and what they hope to pass on to the next generation of young architects at their respective firms. We touch on the current trends that are making buildings better for the planet and its occupants, and how to balance the quality and speed of construction. Listen in to hear more of our conversation about sustainable and modern living spaces. About the Guests:Tommy Craig is Senior Managing Director and the Co-Head of the New York office of Hines, as well as Head of the Boston office. Hines is an international developer, investor and manager of real estate with nearly 5,000 employees worldwide. He is on the board of the Urban Design Forum, and the Phipps Houses, a non-profit affordable housing developer. Previously, he taught at Columbia Business School.Rick Cook is a Founding Partner at COOKFOX, the New York City based design firm he started in 2003 with Bob Fox. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are once again joined by Trek Writer, author, journalist, thru-hiker, and fan favorite, Clay Bonnyman Evans aka "Pony". Pony gives us a play-by-play of his recent PCT thru-hike, we talk an uncomfortable amount about semen, the challenges of maintaining a marriage during a four-month backpacking trip, why this bout of post-trail depression was especially intense, and more. We wrap the show with a triple crown of soups done during another plank-off per our guest's request, and things generally fall off the rails as they tend to do. Listen Download this episode. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, the nepotism continues as I'm joined by my 2011 AT pal (drink), Melissa "Click" Goodwin. In addition to an extensive backpacking resume, Melissa is a professional photographer and the founder at Girl Gotta Hike, a guiding company for women based out of New York. We of course take a trip down memory lane- trading some of our favorite moments from the AT in 2011 (drink), we also talk about what it's like to thru-hike with a parent, how Melissa and her husband Donni make due with her being gone for such long stretches, some of the tricks behind the trade of food photography, and we learn all about Click's foray into becoming a professional hiking guide. We wrap the show with a brand new segment- who do you think you are I am of the week. IndexIQ: You no longer need to choose between supporting the environment and investing in your financial future. Important Events May 25, 1803 Today is the birthday of the American transcendentalist, essayist, philosopher, and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson. Ralph Waldo Emerson was a son of Boston. By the time he finished his schooling at Harvard, he had decided to go by his middle name, Waldo. He was his class poet, and he wrote an original poem for his graduation. Six years later, on Christmas Day, he would meet his first wife, Ellen. Two years later, he lost her to tuberculosis. Her death eventually made him a wealthy man — although he had to sue his inlaws to acquire the inheritance. Deeply grieved after losing Ellen, Waldo eventually traveled to Europe, where he visited the Royal Botanical Garden in Paris. The experience was a revelation to him. At the Paris Garden, Waldo sees plants organized according to Jussieu's system of classification. Suddenly he can see connections between different species. The American historian and biographer. Robert D. Richardson wrote, "Emerson's moment of insight into the interconnectedness of things in the Jardin des Plantes was a moment of almost visionary intensity that pointed him away from theology and toward science". Upon his return to the states, Waldo befriended other forward thinkers and writers of his time: William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Thomas Carlyle. In 1835, Waldo married his second wife, Lydia Jackson. Waldo changed her name from Lydia to Lidian, and he calls her by other names like Queenie and Asia. She always calls him “Mr. Emerson.” Around this time, Waldo began to think differently about the world and his perspective on life. Waldo was also the son of a minister, which makes his move away from religion and societal beliefs all the more impressive. By 1836, Waldo published his philosophy of transcendentalism in an essay he titled "Nature." He wrote: "Nature is a language and every new fact one learns is a new word; but it is not a language taken to pieces and dead in the dictionary, but the language put together into a most significant and universal sense. I wish to learn this language, not that I may know a new grammar, but that I may read the great book that is written in that tongue." The next year, Waldo gave a speech called "The American Scholar." It so moved Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. that he called Waldo’s oration text America's "intellectual Declaration of Independence." After his Nature essay, Waldo befriended Henry David Thoreau. In late September of 1838, the Salem Massachusetts Unitarian minister and American botanist John Lewis Russell visited Waldo, and they spent some time botanizing together. Waldo wrote about the visit in his journal: "A good woodland day or two with John Lewis Russell who came here, & showed me mushrooms, lichens, & mosses. A man in whose mind things stand in the order of cause & effect & not in the order of a shop or even of a cabinet." In 1855, when Walt Whitman published his Leaves of Grass, he sent a copy to Emerson. Waldo sent Whitman a five-page letter of praise. With Emerson’s support, Whitman issues a second edition that, unbeknownst to Waldo, quoted a passage from his letter that was printed in gold leaf on the cover, "I Greet You at the Beginning of a Great Career." Waldo was displeased by this; he had wanted the letter to remain private. In the twilight of his life, the man who once advised, “Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience,” Ralph Waldo Emerson was invited to join a group of nine intellectuals on a camping trip in the Adirondacks. The goal was simple: to connect with nature. The experience included Harvard’s naturalist Louis Agassiz, the great botanist James Russell Lowell, and the American naturalist Jeffries Wyman. It was Ralph Waldo Emerson who wrote, "The landscape belongs to the person who looks at it." "Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year." And “The Earth laughs in flowers.” Finally, here’s a little prayer Waldo wrote - giving thanks for the gifts of nature. “For flowers that bloom about our feet; For tender grass, so fresh, so sweet; For song of bird, and hum of bee; For all things fair we hear or see, Father in heaven, we thank Thee!” May 25, 1949 Today is the birthday of the Antiguan-American novelist, essayist, and short-story writer Jamaica Kincaid born Elaine Potter Richardson. Jamaica Kincaid is a gardener and popular garden writer. Her book Among Flowers: A Walk in the Himalaya offers many wonderful excerpts. And here, she discusses the dreams of gardeners - and how they form from our desire and curiosity. She writes, “Something that never escapes me as I putter about the garden, physically and mentally: desire and curiosity inform the inevitable boundaries of the garden, and boundaries, especially when they are an outgrowth of something as profound as the garden with all its holy restrictions and admonitions, must be violated.” Jamaica’s book My Garden offers an intimate look at her relationship with her garden. She writes, "I shall never have the garden I have in my mind, but that for me is the joy of it; certain things can never be realized and so all the more reason to attempt them." Here she talks about time and the destruction of a garden: “In a way, a garden is the most useless of creations, the most slippery of creations: it is not like a painting or a piece of sculpture—it won’t accrue value as time goes on. Time is its enemy’ time passing is merely the countdown for the parting between garden and gardener.” "The garden has taught me to live, to appreciate the times when things are fallow and when they're not." She also wrote, “I love planting. I love digging holes, putting plants in, tapping them in. And I love weeding, but I don’t like tidying up the garden afterwards.” During the pandemic in August of 2020, Jamaica wrote an essay for the New Yorker called, The Disturbances of the Garden. She wrote about learning to garden from her mother: “My mother was a gardener, and in her garden it was as if Vertumnus and Pomona had become one: she would find something growing in the wilds of her native island (Dominica) or the island on which she lived and gave birth to me (Antigua), and if it pleased her, or if it was in fruit and the taste of the fruit delighted her, she took a cutting of it (really she just broke off a shoot with her bare hands) or the seed (separating it from its pulpy substance and collecting it in her beautiful pink mouth) and brought it into her own garden and tended to it in a careless, everyday way, as if it were in the wild forest, or in the garden of a regal palace. The woods: The garden. For her, the wild and the cultivated were equal and yet separate, together and apart.” Later she writes about her own relationship with the garden. “But where is the garden and where am I in it? This memory of growing things, anything, outside not inside, remained in my memory… in New York City in particular, I planted: marigolds, portulaca, herbs for cooking, petunias, and other things that were familiar to me, all reminding me of my mother, the place I came from. Those first plants were in pots and lived on the roof of a diner that served only breakfast and lunch, in a dilapidated building at 284 Hudson Street, whose ownership was uncertain, which is the fate of us all. Ownership of ourselves and of the ground on which we walk, ...and ownership of the vegetable kingdom are all uncertain, too. Nevertheless, in the garden, we perform the act of possessing. To name is to possess…” “I began to refer to plants by their Latin names, and this so irritated my editor at this magazine (Veronica Geng) that she made me promise that I would never learn the Latin name of another plant. I loved her very much, and so I promised that I would never do such a thing, but I did continue to learn the Latin names of plants and never told her. Betrayal, another feature of any garden.” Unearthed Words After Nicholas hung up the phone, he watched his mother carry buckets and garden tools across the couch grass toward a bed that would, come spring, be brightly ablaze as tropical coral with colorful arctotis, impatiens, and petunias. Katherine dug with hard chopping strokes, pulling out wandering jew and oxalis, tossing the uprooted weeds into a black pot beside her. The garden will be beautiful, he thought. But how do the weeds feel about it? Sacrifices must be made. ― Stephen M. Irwin, Australian screenwriter, producer, and novelist, The Dead Path Grow That Garden Library Plant Identification Terminology by James G. Harrison This book came out in 2001, and the subtitle is An Illustrated Glossary. Well, to me, this book is an oldie, but goodie; I first bought my copy of this book back in 2013. This book aims to help you understand the terms used in plant identification, keys, and descriptions - and it also provides definitions for almost 3,000 words. Now, if you're looking to improve your grasp of plant identification terminology, this book will be an invaluable reference. And just as a heads up. there are around 30 used copies that are reasonably priced on Amazon. But of course, they're not going to last forever, so if you're interested in this book, don't wait to get a copy. (After those used copies are gone, then the next lowest price is around $200.) This book is 216 pages of exactly what it says it is: plant identification, terminology - and I should mention that there are also helpful illustrations. You can get a copy of Plant Identification Terminology by James G. Harrison and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $12 Today’s Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart May 25, 1908 Today is the birthday of the Michigan-born poet, gardener, and the 1954 Pulitzer Prize winner for poetry, Theodore Roethke (“RETH-key”). Ted wrote about nature and the American Northwest. He enjoyed focusing on “the little things in life.” His father was a gardener, a greenhouse grower, a rose-lover, and a drinker. As a result, many of Ted’s pieces are about new life springing from rot and decay. His best poem is often considered to be “The Rose.” The poem reminded him of his father, and he could barely speak the poem without crying. Today, garden signs and social media posts quote Ted’s verse, “Deep in their roots all flowers keep the light.” Ted battled bipolar depression most of his life, and his darkness can be seen in his poem called The Geranium. When I put her out, once, by the garbage pail, She looked so limp and bedraggled, So foolish and trusting, like a sick poodle, Or a wizened aster in late September, I brought her back in again For a new routine - Vitamins, water, and whatever Sustenance seemed sensible At the time: she'd lived So long on gin, bobbie pins, half-smoked cigars, dead beer, Her shriveled petals falling On the faded carpet, the stale Steak grease stuck to her fuzzy leaves. (Dried-out, she creaked like a tulip.) The things she endured!- The dumb dames shrieking half the night Or the two of us, alone, both seedy, Me breathing booze at her, She leaning out of her pot toward the window. Near the end, she seemed almost to hear me- And that was scary- So when that snuffling cretin of a maid Threw her, pot and all, into the trash-can,I said nothing. But I sacked the presumptuous hag the next week, I was that lonely. A sunnier and more tender poem was called Transplanting. Ted wrote the poem from the perspective of "a very small child: all interior drama; no comment; no interpretation.” Watching hands transplanting, Turning and tamping, Lifting the young plants with two fingers, Sifting in a palm-full of fresh loam,-- One swift movement,-- Then plumping in the bunched roots, A single twist of the thumbs, a tamping, and turning, All in one, Quick on the wooden bench, A shaking down, while the stem stays straight, Once, twice, and a faint third thump,-- Into the flat-box, it goes, Ready for the long days under the sloped glass: The sun warming the fine loam, The young horns winding and unwinding, Creaking their thin spines, The underleaves, the smallest buds Breaking into nakedness, The blossoms extending Out into the sweet air, The whole flower extending outward, Stretching and reaching. Theodore Roethke died in 1963. He was visiting friends on Bainbridge Island. One afternoon he was fixing mint juleps by the pool. The friends went to the main house to get something. When they returned, three perfect mint juleps sat on a table by the edge of the pool, and Ted was floating face down in the water. He’d suffered a brain aneurysm. After his death, the family honored their friend by filling in the pool. They installed a beautiful zen garden in the pool's footprint that is framed by conifers and features raked sand and a handful of moss-covered stones. There is no plaque. Today, we’ll end the podcast with Theodore’s ode to spring - called Vernal Sentiment. Though the crocuses poke up their heads in the usual places, The frog scum appear on the pond with the same froth of green, And boys moon at girls with last year's fatuous faces, I never am bored, however familiar the scene. When from under the barn the cat brings a similar litter,— Two yellow and black, and one that looks in between,— Though it all happened before, I cannot grow bitter: I rejoice in the spring, as though no spring ever had been. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
Guest Overview This week we welcome Mother and daughter team Barbara Anderson and Jackie Graham, Founders of Art on the Ave. This New York-based social impact initiative spotlights the work of under-represented artists and turns storefronts into exhibition spaces and streets into open-air galleries. In the first part of this interview, we ask Barbara about Jackie as a child and explore the impact of her mother and father on her life and career direction and work ethic. Jackie discusses her international upbringing and its influence on her sense of self and feeling of being a global citizen. We discuss how Jackie's character and organizational skills were evident at an early age and how curiosity was cultivated. Jackie discusses education and her focus on the art business and how a serendipitous summer internship opened her eyes to the value of accessibility to the arts, ultimately preparing her for the work she and Barbara are doing with Art on the Avenue. We talk about the role of art in teaching children about socio-cultural moments in history. Then we dive into their work with Art on the Ave, launching it as a response to the pandemic, the shuttered stores, barren windows, and deserted neighborhoods in New York's upper west side, with the aim of supporting local artists and bringing life back to the streets. Turning New York's Columbus Avenue's empty storefronts into a gallery space, Art on the Ave has reimagined street art and democratizes art spaces and community art access. Their second exhibition launches in the West Village and runs from April 15th through May. After over 150 submissions to their latest exhibition, their curated works will be displayed along Bleecker Street, Christopher Street, and Hudson Street, creating what Barbara calls the West Village wander.Through organizations like Art on the Ave are reimagining the role of art in communities, its impact on what a neighborhood is, while creating new commercial opportunities for artists. If you want to learn more, we have added links to Art on the Ave in the show notes. But for now, be engaged, entertain, and educated by the marvelous mother and daughter team of Barbara Anderson and Jackie Graham. Andrew Anzalone was restless. It was late fall, 2017. The year was winding down, and so was his MD/PhD program at Columbia. Trying to figure out what was next in his life, he'd taken to long, leaf-strewn walks in the West Village. One night as he paced up Hudson Street, his stomach filled with La Colombe coffee and his mind with Crispr gene editing papers, an idea began to bubble through the caffeine brume inside his brain.

Sam Mason from Odd Fellows: "We knew {at WD-50} what we wanted to do. We knew the kind of stuff we wanted to produce, that type of aesthetics and the type of techniques but we just didn't know how to do it. So we had to teach ourselves. It was before anyone else was doing it. So you couldn't really ask people questions because no one knew what we were trying to get across in our mind's eye. We had these ideas. We had to come up with the techniques. And thankfully Wylie (Dufresne) was able to develop the relationships with the companies that produce the stuff and they were very helpful and, even them, they couldn't quite grasp what we were trying to do because the stuff we were trying to do was a little bit new to them too." What we covered In this first episode recorded face-to-face Sam Mason has created more than 250 ice cream and sorbet flavors since he opened Odd Fellows in Brooklyn. And he doesn't gravitate towards sweets stuff and desserts He went to culinary school for pastry at Johnson & Wales in Providence. Some of his mentors: Jean-Louis Palladin, David Burke, Charlie Palmer, Paul Liebrandt, PIerre Hermé and Rocco DiSpirito. He says: "I've had a very charmed life as far as food goes" Nowadays he doesn't think people (in the industry) care about culinary school diplomas. Instead he recommends to get real world experience in some of the finest kitchen. He remembers WD-50 with chef Wylie Dufresne. WD-50 is where Sam Mason discovered "science" in the kitchen. A lot of trial and errors. Obviously baking is a science. But he says that you don't think about it as such. Sam Mason talks about his creative process. He is using Shiitake mushrooms ice cream as an example. Outside of food architecture is a source of inspiration for Sam Mason. But at the end of the say he says what he sells is a scoop on a cone so how far can you go? The influence of Instagram in the creation of a dessert. First tasting session during the podcast with the following flavors: Lemon Turmeric Ginger sorbet, Rosemary Infused Goat Milk ice cream with Concord and Walnut, Peanut Butter S'mores ice cream, Toasted Sesame Nutella, and Vegan Coconut Caramel Chips. Increasing popularity of vegan ice creams. Developing a non sweet ice cream base for savory ice cream. The "passport" concept to boost sales in "non-ice cream" seasons. Sam describes the Odd Fellows Dumbo and Hudson Street concepts. A potential future TV show. 5 rapid-fire questions. Links to other episodes in New York City Chef David Burke - Restaurateur Pastry Chef Mark Welker - Eleven Madison Park Executive Chef Gabriel Kreuther Chef Trigg Brown - Win Son The Brandy Library with Flavien Desoblin Created a new ice cream base for savory ice cream concepts I made today a new formulation. I've been trying to come up with an ice cream that's not sweet. And I think I found it. To get that texture without sugar is almost impossible because sugar is a very fundamental ingredient in ice cream. It keeps ice cream from freezing rock hard. So this is my interpretation of what it can eventually be. This has obviously no flavor. It just tastes like salt and cream. I want to take this as a texture experiment but this can also be now a base for foie gras ice cream. I just did a dinner in Pittsburgh at a friend's restaurant where we did the entire entire menu had an ice cream component. So with six courses of ice cream the first ice creams obviously were very savory because they were with like squab or foie gras with squab Edamame, and Green Apple Bonito sorbet. So we started off very savory and then we ended up sweet. You know obviously we went through the transition of salty sweet but I hadn't quite figured this out yet before the dinner and this new base would have obviously elevated some of the savory stuff.But I'm very excited about that texture. #gallery-3 { margin: auto; } #gallery-3 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px;
This week our guest is Eric Lemonides, co-owner of Almond Restaurant & Bar and L & W Market in Bridgehampton. In his early teens, Eric was allowed to go to two places without supervision — his uncle’s restaurant, which was right downstairs, or La Gamelle, a nearby French Bistro owned by friends of his dad. At La Gamelle he would sit at the bar, eating steak frites, drinking Pepsi with a splash of red wine, and making small talk with the bartenders and regulars at the age of 13. It was on those nights that he realized how much he loved being in restaurants and that it was the restaurant world in which he would make his mark. Years later, he walked into the newly-opened Della Femina looking for a waiter position and walked away the new general manager, which became the stepping stone for his next position as general manager of F.illi Ponte in Tribeca. Following F.illi Ponte, Eric opened Pacific East in Amagansett and Chelsea, as well as the original Market in the Meatpacking District. He opened Lunch on Hudson Street in 2000 and successfully ran it until selling it in 2001 so he and childhood friend Jason Weiner could open Almond. We're looking forward to talking with Eric about his total coolness and the creative process involved in restaurants, food, entrepreneurship, and life.

Inside each bar, you take a drink and listen as your actor/tour guide tells of the history of the establishment and of the great authors who have hung out, gotten drunk and written there. You'll get recitations from relevant texts and stops at "unique sites that are literary, historical, or alcoholic in nature." Tours start off every Saturday at 2pm, beginning at the White Horse Tavern, 567 Hudson Street and 11th Street, and last for three hours. (Take the 1 train to Christopher Street; Left on w. 10th to Hudson St.; Right/North on Hudson St. to West 11th Street). Tickets are $20, $15 for students/seniors. To make a reservation call (212) 613-5796. I caught up with owner Eric Chase at the White Horse recently to learn more about the Crawl and why literary pilgrimage for many assumes such importance.
