There's a little production studio tucked in a building off of Chinquapin Round Road in Annapolis called Riggo Productions. Some days, you might find them creating content for Homestead Gardens, maybe Jos. A. Banks, Blades of Green, or the Annapolis Film Festival. Other times, they might be with Madison Rising, Chic-Fil-A, the Blue Angels, or in the Saudi desert, making training films for the Army. That's just a taste of what they can do and the respect this small Annapolis firm has earned. We sit down with Torrey Pocock to learn more and to find out why every business really should have some video presence (guilty as charged for not having one) in today's world. We learn about the golden nuggets that lay on the cutting room floor and how valuable they are, and we hear what thumb-stopping entails! Curious? Have a listen! We had the opportunity to speak with Beth Lane and her directorial debut of UnBroken, which will be the feature documentary at the Jewish Experience! UnBroken | April 7, 2024 | 10:00 AM | St. Johns College Key Auditorium The incredible story of how the seven Weber siblings, ages 6 -18, evaded certain capture and death, and ultimately escaped Nazi Germany using their own cunning instincts following their mother's incarceration and murder at Auschwitz. Emboldened by their father's mandate that they ‘always stay together,' the children fought through hunger, loneliness, rape, bombings, and fear, declaring themselves as orphans in order to escape to a new life in America. Unbeknownst to them, their only salvation would be what ultimately tears them apart, until reunited 40 years later. Filmmaker Beth Lane, daughter of the youngest Weber sibling, embarks on a quest to retrace their steps seeking answers to long-held questions about her family's survival. UnBroken examines the journey of the Webers as told through conversations with living siblings – now in their eighties and nineties – while Beth and her crew road trip across Germany, following the courageous, tumultuous, and harrowing path taken by her family over seventy years ago. Unfurling the World | April 6, 2024 | 12 Noon | Maryland Hall Between 1933 and 1956, Irving and Electa Johnson sailed with young, inexperienced sailors aboard two schooners, both named Yankee. The Annapolis Film Festival opens on Thursday, April 4th, and will run through April 7th. It features over 70 films, panels, coffee chats, and parties throughout Annapolis. We had the opportunity to hop on the phone with Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart, the directors, for a Spotlight Film screening at the festival—Suze! Suze | April 6, 2024 | 7:00 PM | St. John's College - Key Auditorium When her only child goes off to college, an empty-nest mother gets stuck taking care of her daughter's heartbroken ex-boyfriend, whom she can't stand (especially when he calls her Sooooze). SNL alum Michaela Watkins shines in the role of “Suze,” a perimenopausal, post-matrimonial woman whose mid-life is stagnating until she discovers a renewed sense of purpose in the most unlikely person. “Gage” (amusingly portrayed by Charlie Gillespie) plays in a rock band called The Emotional Morons and his life is going nowhere. In the grand tradition of other such warm-hearted dramedies about lovably flawed people like The Savages and The Skeleton Twins, this film is an emotionally satisfying story with amusingly relatable dialogue and empathetic performances that perfectly capture the humor in human behavior. We had the opportunity to hop on the phone with Josh Greene, the director for his film that will be screening at the festival-- Waves Apart. Waves Apart | March 26, 2023 | 10:00 AM | Maryland Hall (Main) After moving from his Jewish community in Chicago to the small surf town of San Clemente in middle school, Josh Greene became one of the only Jewish kids in his entire town. Josh was bullied and ridiculed for his Jewish heritage, so he decided to find solace in the coolest possible thing he could do as a twelve-year-old San Clemente boy: he took up surfing. Fast forward ten years, and Josh is now an avid surfer. However, Josh was never quite able to leave his Jewish roots behind as new hate groups continue to rise in the United States, with antisemitic rallies happening in his own Southern California backyard. After finding swastikas carved into surfboards at a surf museum, Josh looks back at the sport that once allowed him to fit in. He uncovers California's long, strange history with anti-semitism and how the world's oldest form of hatred has found a home in surfing. By speaking with historians, journalists, and pro surfing legends, like Shaun Tomson and Izzy Paskowitz, Josh personally confronts the hidden underbelly of surfing before discovering new signs of light and community that can help combat the darkness of the sport. Peace By Chocolate will be featured as a spotlight film at the 10th Annual Annapolis Film Festival.  Today, we hopped on the phone with Director, Jonathan Keijser to discuss the film and the festival. Tickets And Passes Available Here. The Annapolis Film Festival opens on Thursday, March 31, 2022 and runs through Sunday, April 2, 2022. Synopsis: PEACE BY CHOCOLATE SUNDAY, 4/3 | 2:30 PM MARYLAND HALL | MAIN THEATER Life for refugees means losing everything — home, history, and family. Issam Hadhad (played by the late great Hatem Ali) is the best chocolatier and “happiness-maker” in Syria but, when his factory is bombed, the family flees to start a new life in the frozen hinterlands of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. His son, Tareq, an aspiring medical student, wants to resume his studies and become a doctor but is torn between a Western culture that values individualism and his Muslim upbringing, where tradition and allegiance to the family are deeply rooted. This touchingly poignant film about beginnings and endings tells the real-life story of the Hadhad family striving to make sweet dreams come true with their new taste of freedom in a Canadian community and culture where everything begins to feel possible. Tickets And Passes Available Here. The Annapolis Film Festival opens on Thursday, March 31, 2022 and runs through Sunday, April 2, 2022. Synopsis: YELLING FIRE IN AN EMPTY THEATER SATURDAY, 4/2 | 12:30 PM ANNAPOLIS ELEMENTARY SUNDAY, 4/3 | 12:30 PM MARYLAND HALL | BOWEN THEATER A recent college graduate arrives in New York City full of youthful naivety and skyscraper-sized expectations. She moves in with an eccentrically inconsiderate couple, finds a temptingly trivial temp-job, and soon earns her first reality check on life in the big city. Made for less than the rent of the Brooklyn apartment where it was shot, this guerilla-chic independent film uses its mini-DV video aesthetic to create an intimate fly-on-the-wall peek into the amusingly awkward lives of young urban bohemians. The inestimable cast gives priceless performances, and Justin Zuckerman's writing is a treasure trove of golden nuggets of humor and pearls of wisdom in his cynically sincere gem of a debut feature that values talent over a big budget. Tickets And Passes Available Here. The Annapolis Film Festival opens on Thursday, March 31, 2022 and runs through Sunday, April 2, 2022. Synopsis: BOBLO BOATS: A DETROIT FERRY TALE SATURDAY, 4/2 | 2:30 PM MARYLAND HALL | BOWEN THEATER SUNDAY, 4/3 | 3:30 PM ANNAPOLIS ELEMENTARY When the Ste. Martha Reeves, the Motown legend with a lilting voice, narrates this revelatory fable-doc that's full of heart and hard truths about a challenging restoration, the iconic amusement park's exciting yet whitewashed history, and the intoxicating ways that nostalgia can inspire and blur memories. Tickets And Passes Available Here. The Annapolis Film Festival opens on Thursday, March 31, 2022 and runs through Sunday, April 2, 2022. Synopsis: EMILY THE CRIMINAL SATURDAY, 4/2 | 8:00 PM MARYLAND HALL | MAIN THEATER The amazing Aubrey Plaza shows off her serious side taking on the titular role of a woman who gets lured into a credit card scheme to make some easy money and gets caught up in a vicious cycle that becomes impossible to break. This cautionary tale is incredibly timely as it reflects the plight of the working-class population who are at the mercy of the unsustainable gig economy, the impossibly high cost of living, and crushing student loan debt. It also highlights the dangers of technology in our interconnected society that makes it so easy to get scammed but so difficult to pass a background check for an honest job interview. John Patton Ford has crafted a unique modern-day parable — part philosophical crime thriller and part psychological portrait of a Millennial Robin Hood. This is the antithesis of Emily in Paris, the idyllic tv show about a young woman landing her dream job as a brand influencer in France; the Emily in this movie stumbles into a nightmare grift as she falls under the wrong kind of influence. It is a real-life race with some true adventurers competing for the steak knives for the most part. The moral of this film is you don't mess with indigenous women. With an unwanted oil pipeline, clean water is at risk for current and future generations that live on sovereign land, and the Sioux women risk their lives and their positions to take a stand against the Dakota Access Pipeline. And it worked, for the most part. The saga continues to this day. We spoke with Shannon Kring, the Director of End of the Line: The Women of Standing Rock to learn about the film, how she intergrated herself with the women, and surprisingly how she did not just make a film and leave--they still speak daily! It's a heartbreaking story of human rights and human decency and the clash with corporate greed. This is a must-see documentary! At 18 months old, Evan Bertrand of Annapolis was diagnosed with autism. Now, this diagnosis will not stand in his way as he takes to the stage at Maryland Hall to perform with his piano in front of  sold out crowd. This short film in the "Maryland's Got Talent" shorts program highlights the preparation for and the execution of that concert in 2017.   We spoke with Producer Robin Miller Ungar and Director Michael Faulkner about how this film came to be and an inside look from an insider's point of view. It's back! And with a vengeance! The 9th Annual Annapolis Film Festival will return virtually this year for ten days from April 8th through the 18th!  And like we do each year, we sit down with the movers and shakers that make all the magic happen.  Today, we are speaking with Patti White and Lee Anderson who founded the festival 9 year ago. After having the run pulled out from under them at the last minute by COVID last year, they are raring to bring one of the most diverse and largest slate of films yet. We talk about what the heck happened last year, how this year will work (technically), and of course some of the fantastic films that need to be on your must-see list. One takeaway I left this conversation with was that you still need to plan your films. While many will be available essentially on-demand, many are time restricted, and others are capacity restricted. So, the secret sauce is to get your pass and make your reservations now to make sure you can catch the ones you want to see! Passes (recommended) are on sale now as are individual tickets and discounted 4-packs. Don't delay! Have a listen! It happens every year...well at least for the past seven years! The Annapolis Film Festival is bringing more than 70 films to Annapolis March 21st to 24th! We sit down to talk to the producers of "Aleppo", a short film that attempts to change the narrative of how Syrians are depicted in the media, and ultimately change minds. By telling a story about one doctor's experience in Aleppo, they  hope to shed light on the critical work of all doctors and victims of the war as it continues. The film is about Hanan, a successful young Syrian-American doctor, who returns to Syria to help victims of war. When the hospital where she works is bombed, she suffers a traumatic brain injury that leaves her face blind. Unable to recognize the faces of even those closest to her, Hanan's world has been turned upside down and her identity lost. Now home in New York, Hanan has difficulty coming to terms with how her life has changed following the attack. Haunted by her trauma and struggling to adjust to her condition, Hanan must confront her fear of navigating the world, putting her identity, and her future as a doctor, in doubt. It happens every year...well at least for the past seven years! The Annapolis Film Festival is bringing more than 70 films to Annapolis March 21st to 24th and we sat down with the founders once again to see what was in store for their seventh go around of this fantastic event that has brought millions to the area economy! Tchaico Omawale is the writer, producer, and director of Solace. We spoke a little bit about the film and how real the characters are, the struggles they face and how they mimic some of her own as she was growing up as the child of a UN employee living across the globe. Solace is about a 17-year old girl, Sole, who is sent to live with her grandmother after her father's death. The relationship is toxic and the film examines the struggles between the two as Sole tries to find her way and her crew. It has been banded as a coming of age movie, but deep down, this is so much more!  Omawale will be present at the screening and will be hosting a Q&A afterwards! Solace screens at 2:45pm on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at  St. Johns College Key Auditorium! It happens every year...well at least for the past seven years! The Annapolis Film Festival is bringing more than 70 films to Annapolis March 21st to 24th and we sat down with the founders once again to see what was in store for their seventh go around of this fantastic event that has brought millions to the area economy! John Chester directed The Biggest Little Farm and is also the man living the plot along with his wife and son.  A filmmaker by trade he and his wife gave it all up to create a sustainable ecosystem just outside of Los Angeles. This is not just a movie, but their life, and their farm--Apricot Lane Farms. The farm is a 200 acre sustainable (after a LOT of work) farm not far from LA. And the movie is the story of how they got there. Catch it now at the Annapolis Film Festival prior to release in theaters later this year!  2 Screenings The Biggest Little Farm screens at 12:30pm on Friday, March 22, 2019 at  Maryland Hall! The Biggest Little Farm screens at 10:30am on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at  Maryland Hall in the Bowen Theatre! Episode 32: Using Mood Boards to Jump Start Your Next Design Project

There is a black hole in design projects. It's this realm right between the development of the creative brief and the presentation of those first few design concepts. Sure, the client knows is that their designer is hard at work – brainstorming, ideating and being as creative as possible in order to deliver the most fantastical design concepts imaginable. Obviously. But where exactly does the designer go? Do they trek through the mountains of Tibet in order to find inner peace and bolster their creativity? Do they flee to an uncharted island to perfect their focus? Most project managers and clients probably couldn't say what goes on during this time. And it's problematic because then, when the first rounds of designs are reviewed, designs come out of left field and no one is quite happy with how it all came out. Goals and expectations were not established, and feelings get hurt. Mood boards are like a lifeline back to the mainland. They bridge this gap that we all struggle with, whether you're a designer or not. And they run both ways, helping both designers and clients communicate better with one another. In this week's episode, Liz and I discuss my own process for using mood boards in design projects. I talk about the tools that I use to brainstorm design concepts and build out mood boards. In particular, I share how they help me communicate better with my clients and ensure that we are both on the same page regarding their needs and desires. Flipping this concept around, Liz also shows how marketers and noncreatives alike can use similar tools to talk to their own designers.  WHAT DID WE TALK ABOUT?   Why use mood boards? How do mood boards help with brainstorming? How do they help with presenting and clarifying design concepts? How should you set up your mood board? How do you create a successful and meaningful mood board? Can a mood board bridge the gap between designers and decision-makers? How can marketers and other nondesigners use mood boards for their projects?   TOOLS MENTIONED:   InVision Pinterest Creative Market Moodboard Niice Canva   RESOURCES:   Noisli (For all of your "rainy-trainy" needs) This adorable penguin holiday cookie cutter mailer 2016 Annapolis Film Festival artwork – "Captain ACrab" by Citizen Pride Foodie photography app Liz avoided my efforts to take a photo of her official "Friday shirt," but I promise to force her to add it to the Creator's Block HQ Instagram when I can.

This week Scott MacMullan interviews Annapolis native Christian Smooth. Christian is a true product of Annapolis. He went to Tyler Heights Elementary School, Annapolis Middle School and, finally graduated from Annapolis High School. While at Annapolis, he was a two-time Anne Arundel County cross country champion. He went on to graduate from Morgan State University, where he began making films. Christian recently directed the film "Ration Day" which will be shown March 11th, 2017, with many other films, at the Iconaclash Cinema Review. For more information, check out the Iconaclash website here.  The back story is Christian aspired to have his film in the Annapolis Film Festival and it was rejected. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he went out and organized a new festival. You gotta respect that. If you haven't already, please tell a friend about the podcast.
