Steuart Pittman has been the Anne Arundel County Executive since December 2018. We first met him on the campaign trail when we interviewed him across his dining room table at his Davidsonville home. And again after he first got the keys to the Arundel Center, And again, mid-way through his first term. Now after winning a second term in office, we wanted to catch up and see how it is going. What has worked for the past 7 years, what has not, and what to expect from him in the next 18 months . We discuss legacies, successors (he's term-limited), how he sees the County in the future, and much more! If you want an inside look (well, listen) into the leadership of the Anne Arundel County... Have a listen.
I bet you did not know that one of the largest bison farms is in Davidsonville. I bet you did not know it is owned by the founder of Nighttime Pediatrics. It's true. Today we sit down with Dr. Robert Graw to talk bison--or buffalo (we learn the difference) and how a local pediatrician came to own Bowtie Bison Farm, one of the largest bison farms in the region. Did you know a bison can jump 9 feet? Bison is a much healthier alternative to beef as it is much more lean and Boomer's Market, located at the farm, has a huge variety of meat--from ground bison, to sausage, to patties, to jerkie, chile and more! You can shop for your bison two days a week, or the easiest way is to order online and swing by to pick it up! Plus they are no supplying many of my favorite restaurants! Really a fascinating discussion! Have a listen! Reverand Al and I can't wait to dive into the life of this Anne Arundel County Farmer turned County Executive. I first met Steuart in my office, Laura Neuman, the former Ane Arundel County Executive, who has a good eye, wanted me to meet him. I was immediately impressed and optimistic that a real person with real concerns for the community, starting with our precious land was interested in making a run. I also sensed he had the energy to win an election.. Well, it happened Steuart Pittman, Jr. was elected Anne Arundel County Executive after his first campaign for public office in 2018 and he was re-elected in 2022. Born and raised on his family farm in Davidsonville, Steuart graduated from the University of Chicago and then went on to work as a community organizer in Chicago and Des Moines, Iowa. In that role, he built neighborhood organizations, confronted environmental hazards, and attracted private investment to blighted communities. Steuart's philosophy of government is both conservative and progressive. As a farmer, he worked hard against onerous regulations that had no public benefit and promoted policies to make the industry commercially viable. As a Director of the Anne Arundel County Soil Conservation District, he pushed for compliance with erosion and sediment control standards to protect local waterways, important work. As County Executive, Steuart has pledged to make Anne Arundel County “The Best Place - For All,” by “Putting Communities First.” We catch him poolside, our second in a long day of recordings. He's fired up to be with the development community and he knows that the phenomenon of putting everyone in the same place at the same time is electric. This is a great conversation with a great guy. Thanks Steuart!

If I'm not mistaken, it was John Keats who said “A thing of beauty is a joy for ever.” That pretty much sums up Chelsea Clocks. This company is the oldest functioning clock company in the United States, and they make clocks at the highest levels of refinement and luxury. They still make mechanical clocks with their iconic solid brass case. The breadth of their offerings is significant, and they still run a robust repair shop to keep these beautiful timepieces running in top shape. You will find Chelsea clocks on naval and private ships, in homes around the world, and they are even a steadfast presence in the White House.Today on the podcast we have the pleasure of talking with Tony LaChapelle, the President and COO of Chelsea Clocks. In our conversation, we discuss the history of the company, the current structure of their business and production facilities, the nature of the “ship's bell clock”, and how Chelsea has maintained their relevance for more than a century. We even discuss their long relationship with Tiffany & Co. and the production of clocks for their business. If they are good enough for Tiffany, they are certainly good enough for anyone! While we discuss the range of Chelsea's activities, you certainly need to hold one in your hand to appreciate them. When you first feel the literal gravity of these timepieces you will start to understand the difference. Here are a few places to find Chelsea Clocks in person, and more can be found on Chelsea's retail locator.Deprisco Jewelers, Boston, MA (The Dogwatch can personally vouch for this business as we have worked with them for a decade, including a very important ring...); Shreve, Crump, and Low, Boston, MA and Greenwich, CT; Tiffany and Co. , Boston, MA and New York, NY; Phillips' Clock Shop, Swampscott, MA; F.L. Despite being a Pasadena native, it is a rare opportunity to see Ray Weaver perform in the area. This September 19th, you have a chance to see him perform a special and intimate show for one night only at Killarney House in Davidsonville. Weaver is a singer and a songwriter--in fact, he will also have a set at the Annapolis Songwriters Festival in September. But perhaps his strength lies in his storytelling. It comes from the heart, often a father's heart--which is the title of his book. Today we speak with Ray (all the way from Denmark) about the upcoming trip to the States, his show at Killarney House, and the charity it will benefit which is near and dear to his heart. Tickets are limited as Killarney House is a small venue, but it is a perfect venue for A Night With Ray Weaver! Have a listen! LINKS: Ray Weaver (Website) Ray Weaver (Facebook) Ray Weaver (Twitter-X)

In this podcast episode, I spoke with Theresa Lear Levine, Founder of Becoming More Me, all about EFT Tapping and how to use it to regulate your nervous system to decrease anxiety. Theresa's own struggles as a high-achieving mompreneur with trauma, ADHD and high-functioning anxiety escalated into chaos and self-doubt and led her on a journey to regain inner peace, confidence and self-love. She learned to cultivate what she felt had been missing in ways that restored her nervous system and calmed her fight or flight impulses and reactions, creating totally new outcomes that had once felt elusive to her. She has worked for over 25 years to help women work on their mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health by expertly combining her personal experiences with her background in psychology, nutrition, and fitness. Using a unique blend of Energy Psychology, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Tapping, Chakra work, and strategy, Theresa empowers other mompreneurs to overcome anxiety, distractions, and limiting patterns so they can be present and feel happier and more fulfilled as they align their beliefs, values and vision for the future with the actions they take in their business and daily life! Theresa lives in Davidsonville, Maryland with her husband Jeff and their 4 boys. In this episode, we discuss: All about EFT: EFT stands for “Emotional Freedom Techniques”, a technique that is a form of energy psychology, not just for those with PTSD but also super helpful for those with high-functioning anxiety. How EFT is a blend of modern psychology and Eastern medicine using the body's meridian points that are used in acupuncture to release energy blockades by tapping those points. Learn how EFT works to regulate the nervous system's fight or flight response as Theresa demonstrates how to use this technique in your everyday life. This technique is so accessible you can utilize this technique with your self-care routine or as a baby step towards self-care if you are in a place of not being able to slow down or are “too busy” for self-care. The science behind the tapping shows that energy can get stuck in the body and the tapping motion helps to move the energy around and release any pain you may have (physical, mental, emotional). How to get started practicing EFT with high-functioning anxiety. The origins of EFT and how it is used not only for mental health, but also performance. How EFT can be used not only for the mental/emotional side of anxiety but the physical side of it as well. Theresa Levine lives in Davidsonville, Maryland with her husband Jeff and their four boys. As an entrepreneur with a background in psychology, nutrition, and fitness, she has been helping women work on various aspects of their mental and physical health for over 25 years. Her struggles with ADHD, trauma, and the chaos and overwhelm of being a mompreneur with big goals and responsibilities led her to learn how to cultivate the success, clarity, and inner peace that used to feel so elusive to her. Using a unique blend of Energy, Psychology, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Tapping, and Strategy, Theresa empowers other mompreneurs to overcome anxiety, distractions, and limiting patterns so they can feel happy, present, and fulfilled as they align their beliefs, actions, values and vision for the business and daily life! In my conversation with Theresa, we start by discussing her journey and how she raised her boys and recognized through their lives that they had ADHD. It was then that she noticed some patterns and had herself tested and diagnosed. So for her, it's been a process of understanding and finding ways to manage their diagnosis. Theresa looks at ADHD as a gift! She feels that is where all of her creativity and curiosity come from throughout the day as her mind takes these little journeys. What a great way to flip something that can seem overwhelming into something positive and empowering! Theresa shares how she discovered EFT and how she uses its principles to help with focus and shifting thoughts and energy within our mind and body! While working in her networking marketing business, she attended a seminar where they had someone come in for the day and teach EFT tapping, The day focused on teaching the basics and how to use it to relieve stress and anxiety. It was that day that she realized that she could be using these techniques for so many more areas of her life and this modality could be the answer for her! It was then that Theresa knew that she had to explore it further and enrolled in getting certified as an EFT Practioner. Attending that seminar with curiosity and an open mind was truly transformational! How she felt after the seminar was amazing and didn't need to understand how it worked but just knew it worked! During our discussion, Theresa walks us through how to do EFT Tapping by explaining that by tapping certain meridian points on our body we can release pain and negativity in the body. She explains each tapping point on our body and how easy it can be and can be done almost anywhere! Even without people noticing which is amazing as we can do this in a public setting when we may feel anxious, nervous, or angry about a specific situation. Theresa also shared how she used EFT tapping prior to getting on the podcast interview today to help her feel grounded, focused, and positive about how she would be showing up and contributing to the interview. Theresa shares that tapping for just ten minutes a day can lower your stress hormone cortisol by up to 43%! Cortisol can have a tremendous impact on our mind and body so why not try something that can lower those levels? With tapping comes incorporating a mantra and we discuss how to decide what mantra you need to use in combination with your tapping. Theresa advised starting with the problem you are experiencing. For Example: Even though I feel anxious about ______________, I deeply love, accept, and forgive myself. She repeats this mantra three times with a nice deep inhale through the nose and exhales through the mouth. It's important to keep your mantra simple. It's also important to be specific because it helps to hunt down those blockages and specifically remove them. It's important that we honor the feeling and accept ourselves! It's also important to access at the beginning of your tapping how you feel on a scale of 1-10 and then how you feel after the tapping. This will help you to gauge your success. We discuss that tapping can be used anywhere and for a lot of different reasons! Fear of flying, heights, spiders, venting to others about your day! Just by tapping different points of the body, you can release the fear and negativity you are feeling and be able to move forward! Theresa feels that when setting goals and reaching forward it's important to reach backward and learn from the lessons. We need to honor where we've come from and how much we have already accomplished. Sometimes we may experience goal trauma in setting goals which makes us fearful of trying again or setting too aggressive of a goal. We walk through the seven Chakras in our body and how when we declare a goal, it moves from the of our head ( crown chakra ) to the root chakra and working that goal through all of the different chakra systems so you can internalize it. Theresa starts with the root chakra because that's where all of our feeling of unsafety are hiking and need to be released in order for us to move forward. If we don't have a safe place for each of these stages for the goal to manifest then it cannot become physical. Our lives can be busy and crazy at times and it's important to have a good coping mechanism to deal with these circumstances and triggers. It's also important to deal with our feeling and work through them because if we don't then we will end up creating more chaos for ourselves and could possibly make ourselves physically ill. Rob Choisser- Choisser Automotive Services, Davidsonville, MD. Rob started in the industry as an oil change/apprentice under my step-father, Bob Owens, at a Honda dealer in 1989. He worked toward certification in every course HONDA would offer and ASE, achieving Platinum Level with Honda and ASE Master Auto Technician with L1 Advanced Engine Performance. Continuing on the training and certification path I became a Maryland Vehicle Safty Inspector, a Maryland Emissions Repair Technician, and a Maryland Licensed Locksmith. In 2002 he was recruited to open a new Honda dealership as the shop foreman, this experience was paramount in igniting his entrepreneurial spirit. In 2006 he launched Choisser Enterprises, Inc. DBA Choisser Import Auto Services, a mobile auto diagnostic service. He kept this business small and flexible so he could support and facilitate his two young son's activities. Fast forward, while running this small solo operation, he became an advanced level EMT-I (Nationally, Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate or Cardiac Rescue Technician in Maryland) and volunteered with the local fire department from 2008 until 2013 when he was offered a career position with the Anne Arundel County Fire department. He used this training and experience to relate to people when discussing their vehicle “health”. The modern automobile is more like a complex organism than one might think, each system is interdependent on the other's proper function. This decision to serve the public on a different level is when he hired his first 2 employees and in 2014 we started operating out of our current 3 bay facility in Davidsonville, MD. They have grown to 9 member team, including himself. Their goal is to keep vehicles on the road for at least 15 years or 300,000 miles and to keep our customers out of new/used vehicle debt. We accomplish this through consumer education, preventative maintenance and proactive repair processes. Key Talking Points Educate customers- relate to them and guide them where they should be. Transparent communication that offers comfort. Maintenance- eating well, exercising, not living a sedentary lifestyle for both humans and vehicles Vehicles should be viewed as infinite instead of finite “good for few years then turn in” “Car Pain”- everything that is painful that surrounds a vehicle (breaking down, AC/heat doesn't work, getting new vehicle etc) Pay attention to predictable car pain. Weak points in different makes and model vehicles- have your team understand and research and discuss openly. New customers- they are “breaking up” with their previous repair shop, ask them what their “car pains” are. Let them know your unique approach as a business- eliminate car pain and provide enduring confidence with vehicle (unless rusted out, been in flood, structural damage and less than 15 years old it is beneficial to keep it). What's in it for the customer- keep you on the road and provide a return on investment with their vehicle. Robert has 80% customer retention- based on old Honda maintenance practices. Uses Bolton for the pre-scheduling process. Hesitation with pre-scheduling appointments for customers- if they drop off their vehicle they lose their freedom. How do you overcome that? Consider loaner cars Stubbing your toe- you will limp and it affects your forward motion. Hitting pothole- activate ABS, stability, change shift points, throw the alignment off etc. When that goes unaddressed bigger issues will arise. SOAPE Note- Subjective (what you see), Objective (customer car pain), Assessment (inspection), Plan (what it will take to fix it), and Effect (this is what it means to customer and driveability of the vehicle going forward). Referrals- customers are the best marketing source. New customers that come in based on referrals and drop their keys are essential and their trust cannot be compromised. Thanks to Rob Choisser for his
