Aviation News ‘The alarm bells are going off': Air travel hits new lows Recent events have made commercial air travel a difficult proposition for many air travelers. We see increasing fuel costs and increasing ticket prices, long lines at some security checkpoints, TSA workers absent, recent accidents, air traffic controller shortages, equipment malfunctions, and more. The U.S. Travel Association's senior vice president of government relations, Erik Hansen, said of passengers, “What they're seeing is chaos, and what they're seeing is a system that doesn't work.” Delta suspends special congressional services amid shutdown In a statement to The Hill, Delta said, “Due to the impact on resources from the longstanding government shutdown, Delta will temporarily suspend specialty services to members of Congress flying Delta. Next to safety, Delta's no. 1 priority is taking care of our people and customers, which has become increasingly difficult in the current environment.” Those services have included airport escorts and red coat services. Senate passes measure prohibiting preferential airport screening for lawmakers Just days before the Delta action, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved a proposal to end the special treatment members of Congress get at airports. That included permitting members of Congress to speed through or skip security screening checkpoints. To become law, the House would have to pass the bill, and the President would have to sign it. LaGuardia controller staffing may have violated procedures on night of collision, document shows On March 22, 2026, an Air Canada jet landing at LaGuardia struck a fire truck, killing both pilots. LaGuardia tower’s standard operating procedures specify that a controller cannot perform both air and ground duties. The NTSB is investigating the roles of the controllers at the time of the crash. A 2023 rule in the LaGuardia ​Tower Standard Operating Procedures states, “Positions at LaGuardia Tower are not to be consolidated to one position prior to midnight local time or 90 minutes after the start of the shift, whichever is later.” Those familiar with the matter said the rule remained in effect in 2026. D.C.-area ATC evacuations followed 2025 smoke event which injured controllers On March 13, 2026, FAA operations were disrupted after Potomac Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) reported a strong smell. Fire responders investigated, and the source was identified as an overheated circuit board. That incident caused a ground stop lasting a little over two hours, affecting DCA, IAD, BWI, and nearby airports. On March 27, 2026, the TRACON was evacuated again after another strong chemical smell, reportedly originating from an overheated battery backup or other electrical component in the break room/IT area. That second evacuation also triggered ground stops and significant delays across the region. A similar event occurred in April 2025, when smoke entered the Potomac TRACON control room. That incident did not lead to an evacuation, but did leave multiple controllers with health issues severe enough to affect their medical certificates. Artemis II Headed for the Moon The Artemis II Mission flew four astronauts around the moon before returning them to Earth. The planned 10-day test flight is the first time since Apollo 17 in 1972 that humans have departed Earth orbit. NASA's SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and Orion spacecraft lifted off from Launch Pad 39B at the agency's Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 6:35 p.m. EDT on April 1, 2026. The Artemis III mission will launch a crew in the Orion spacecraft atop the SLS rocket to test rendezvous and docking capabilities between Orion and commercial spacecraft (SpaceX and Blue Origin) needed to land astronauts on the Moon. NASA will announce specifics on the Artemis III mission design and crew closer to the 2027 launch. Artemis IV astronauts will travel to lunar orbit, where two crew members will descend to the surface and spend approximately a week near the Moon’s South Pole conducting new science before returning to lunar orbit to rejoin their crew for the journey back to Earth. Report Calls for Major Flight Training Changes The FAA has released a 471-page report by the National Flight Training Alliance (NFTA) titled A Comprehensive Modernization of Pilot Training Conducted by 14 CFR Part 141 Training Organizations, which states: “The goal of this modernization effort is unambiguous: to develop a robust certification and regulatory framework under 14 CFR Part 141 that stands alone as the preeminent accreditation and method by which aviators are trained throughout the world. Under this new framework, achieving FAA certification would represent the highest standard of training excellence available anywhere negating the need for further accreditation or external oversight. The American flight training system would, in this vision, stand alone already.“ The key recommendations include: Establishing a dedicated Central Management Office responsible for all Part 141 pilot school initial certification and ongoing certificate management. Establishing both Safety Management Systems and Quality Management Systems within the Part 141 training environment. Reforming how the FAA manages and oversees certificated pilot schools. Developing industry consensus standards as an alternate means of compliance with Part 141 regulations. Reforming the Part 141 examining authority framework. Expanding Flight Simulation Training Device (FSTD) and Technology Credit and Usage. Modernizing training course appendices. Replacing Provisional Pilot School with Registered Pilot School. A-10 Warthog Being Tested With Aerial Refueling Probe Bolted Onto Its Nose A test A-10 has been flown for the first time with a refueling probe replacing its normal aerial refueling receptacle. The A-10 successfully connected to the aerial refueling drogue of a C-130.  The Air Force uses a flying boom system, while the Navy uses a probe-and-drogue system. Full Transcript Below: Emmanuel: God Is With You, Even Now By: Alexis A. Goring Bible Reading:“Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Emmanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” - Matthew 1:23 NLT I sat at a crossroads in my mind. Physically, I was in the driver’s seat of my car in the parking lot between Panera Bread and my favorite local bookstore. But mentally, my mind was weighing the pros and cons of a new job offer. Minutes earlier, Erin, who was the managing editor for the newspaper where I worked as a freelance reporter, had called me to say a publisher of a newspaper in Montana had called her asking for a recommendation about me. She said he sounded very interested in hiring me. In fact, she thought I was getting the job! I was excited but also apprehensive. If they offered me this job, then was I ready to leave the only home I’d known, pack my bags, and relocate from Maryland to Montana? After all, I was a city and suburb East Coast Girl. Was I ready to take this leap of faith and move out to the West of the USA without knowing anyone there or what to expect? Within a matter of days, the publisher interviewed me via Zoom and offered me the job. I froze. Was this really happening? After a moment of silence, I asked for time to think it over. He agreed. Later that day, my Mom—convinced this was the right opportunity for me at that time—said I should accept the job offer and prepare to move. After prayer—and considering the fact that I needed a job, but no local jobs had been offered to me for several months prior—I agreed and told the publisher I would move to Montana. My Mom took a week off from work to help me relocate. We took a flight from BWI and a connecting flight before landing in a small airport in Montana. I still remember the statue of a big cow standing tall and strong in the center of baggage claim. We had arrived in what they call Big Sky Country. Over the course of that week, Mom and I explored my new neighborhood—a small town that was equally charming as the people were nice. We drove an hour away to Billings (the nearest city), where we shopped for home living essentials at Target and Walmart, visited the Ashley Furniture Store to furnish my apartment, and enjoyed meals at the local village cafe near my new home. We both enjoyed the fresh mountain air, the wide-open spaces of land, and being able to see the stars shine bright in the sky at night. When it came time for Mom to leave before sunrise to catch an early flight at the airport so she could return home to Maryland, she told me to pray this prayer every day: God be with me. After she left and the sun rose in the sky, I put on a brave face and said that prayer, then moved forward fearlessly. Looking back, I see how God protected me and kept me safe during that time when I lived alone. He kept wild animals away (cougars were known to prowl near where I lived). He kept me safe when I drove alone through roadways bordered by majestic mountains. God also sent His blessings my way: He surrounded me with people in the community who seemed to care about me. He blessed me with friends who were Christians and married to each other; they drove me to church in Billings every weekend until my car was shipped to my new location. He blessed me with a good neighbor who lived across the hall from me. Her name was Lindsay. She and her school-age children baked Peanut Butter Blossom cookies for me with Hershey’s Kisses in the center of each cookie. They gave this sweet treat to me as a Christmas gift. It showed me that God cares about the little details in life because I was craving chocolate that night, but couldn’t drive anywhere that late to buy it from the grocery store. When my time in Montana was over, God sent Lindsay to my door the night before I had to catch my flight home to Maryland. When I opened the door, she greeted me with a Christmas card and a sincere expression on her face. When I opened the card, money fell out. She told me she had been praying for me, and God told her that is what I needed. I thanked Lindsay for the generous gift. All the time I journeyed in Montana, God was with me. I felt His Presence as clear as day. He sent the people I needed at the right time every time. He blessed my time there, and He brought me home safely. I am so grateful to have witnessed firsthand how God moves. While in Montana that December, a Christmas song by Casting Crowns titled “God is with Us” became the soundtrack for my real-life story. May you take heart in knowing that wherever you are in this world—at home or abroad—the Creator of the Universe knows where you are and He is with you, even now. More to come? The bad news for the top of Penn State's 2026 prospects started Wednesday when four-star tackle Greyson McKeogh chose Notre Dame over Penn State and Texas. Shortly after, industry experts put in picks for top defensive back targets Khary Adams and Joey O'Brien to join him in South Bend. After that, reports from On3 surfaced that USC and Ohio State were in a bidding war for top defensive end Luke Wafle, who was about to command a seven-figure NIL package. Where does that leave Penn State? Snyder will do his best to give fans the intel on why things are trending away from the Nittany Lions with in-state and regional targets. We'll also discuss who is left on the board and what the program can do to make up ground. Penn State finishing June with three camps in five days Penn State hosted a smaller mid-week camp on Wednesday that BWI attended. Several top commits and prospects were also in attendance. We'll discuss what we saw from defensive line commit Isaac Chukwurah, and 2027 target Abraham Sessay. Defensive back commits Julian Peterson and Matt Sieg also attended camp, which was our first time to see them work up close. Fitz will discuss the latest that BWI has learned about the recruiting efforts from last week and the ones coming up tonight at Penn State practice. We'll discuss which players are trending in the right direction for offers, official visits, or potential commitments. House Case Unresolved after first day Penn State and the rest of the college football world await the final resolution and fallout from the House Settlement case, which started its final verdict on Monday. Bauer will discuss what he learned from the first day's deliberation and how those initial comments shape his perception of college football's immediate and long-term future. We'll discuss those implications for Penn State. Finally, we'll end the show digging deeper into our discussion about the Penn State wide receiver room from last week. Receivers coach Marques Hagans and head coach James Franklin spoke about the position with reporters last week. He'll recap the events and discuss what meaningful things he's learned this week about the program. Penn State recruiting wins Penn State commit and potential five-star receiver Khalil Taylor discussed his decision to join the program with reporter Ryan Snyder earlier this week. While Snyder is off today, we're discussing his conversation with Taylor and relaying some of the highlights from his conversation with the 2027 pass catcher. We'll also discuss the team's out of region prospects. Penn State primarily relies on strong recruiting within its geographical footprint but can occasionally snag players from other states. There's a growing list of names that Fitz and Snyder have collected from players interested in the program beyond the borders of Penn State country. How big of a factor can or will they play in this recruiting class? We'll ask Fitz what he can glean at this stage in the recruiting process. Spring visits and upcoming visitors Finally, we'll discuss the players who visited the program last week and stand out on the list of names that BWI has collected.
