In a culture that celebrates celebrity stardom, idolizes professional athletes as the best of the best, and constantly pushes for success, perhaps no virtue of God is more forgotten than the virtue of humility. And yet Jesus consistently, continually modeled a different kind of life marked by genuine humility. Yet, while we know humility is important and to be exemplified in our lives we all struggle with practicing such humility. How do we expect “great things” as a church and in our own lives while living lives of humility? What does it mean to live a life of humility? Why is it necessary for a genuine walk with God? We will seek to answer these and other questions as we attempt to pursue a way of life not often traveled by many in our culture, the holy practice of humility.

We will use this theme to kick off the new year as we explore the book of James in its entirety. James is a well-known Biblical book about putting faith into action. People are often anxious to begin the new year “on the right foot” and put resolutions, etc into practice. As a church, we want to begin the year by acting on our faith in Christ. In this sermon series we explore the book of James as a whole, covering one chapter each week. We also will use this series to invite all small groups to study the book of James in a corporate fashion throughout the month of January. In this series we will encourage all small groups to get involved (if they are not already) in some of the key sending activities of the church and in that way, JUST DO IT! This approach should allow for greater alignment in our vision and impact in the church as a whole as we focus and serve together. We will also touch on how to find time in the midst of our busyness to DO IT all. In this way, we will hopefully begin the new year with a bang!

How do we effectively share in community and share in life together? Join us in this sermon series as we seek to explore how to maximize and appreciate our time together with each other. In a world that focuses upon “me, me, me” yet leaves us wanting, come discover a life that focuses upon God’s idea of “us, us, us” and be surprised at what is discovered. We tend to think of community as a “nice” but not “necessary” part of life. Come discover why life together is not only fulfilling, but essential for “full living” and the hope of the world. In this sermon series we will focus on how EVERYTHING is meant to be useful and beneficial in the building of God’s kingdom… from the “obvious” spiritual practices of prayer and Bible study to the less obvious ones of how to use our resources and dealing with facilities. In this series we will focus upon the upcoming Vision Initiative with the theme of God’s Vision being Our Future and the call to stewardship this brings. But in doing this we will remind everyone that everything is meant to be spiritual and used for God’s purposes. So as we talk about money and facility improvement and the hiring of people for jobs, etc. we will recognize how these things are indeed spiritual and meant to be used for the glory of God. In many ways we will also explore a theology of money and again seek to understand how something as “slippery” as the usage of money is meant to be spiritual in nature in order to glorify God. And in this series we will examine how our treatment of finances challenges us in the depth of our discipleship.

This God is constantly moving us, and when necessary, shifting us, from one place to another so that we grow in connection with God… in other words, God is constantly transforming us. That’s what we at First Church are all about… being shifted, changed, transformed in God’s love. Come explore with us what it means for us to be shifted into “high gear” with God as we carefully unpack God’s vision of transformation for us through inviting, teaching, and sending. A famous media personality used to once say, “And now… the rest of the story…?” And then they would go on to give more information and some of the back ground to a particular story they were sharing with their audience because, well, people want to know. Intrinsically we are a people who like to know the rest of the story, or the whole story, but we have a natural tendency to only focus on a small part of the story. Even though we like to know the big picture, we tend to only focus on what is right in front of us. Sometimes Christians ONLY focus on Jesus… but there is much more to the Bible than Jesus. Sometimes Christians only focus on the brokenness of human beings and their sad state, but there is more to the Bible than simply the fallen nature of humans. And some folks like to only talk about “end times” and what that will be like, but the Bible talks about a lot more than simply what will happen in the last days. When we look at the entire story, all of what God wants to share with us, we see the beauty and depth of God’s perfect love for us and the lengths God was willing to go to share such love with us. And in that love we see its lasting power. Join us in this sermon series as we examine the entire Biblical narrative… from start to finish (in broad strokes of course!) as we look at the whole story… from Creation, to the Fall, to Redemption, to Restoration.

But when we get real—mistakes and all-- God offers hope, life, and grace in spite of it all and desires to use the church despite its human short-comings.
