This setting has greatly influenced and caused him to grow as a person, as he's witnessed systemic change, the rise of incarceration, and the children visiting their parents go on to become inmates themselves. Becoming familiar with the cycles of crime and poverty, David sees the people behind bars as we all should - as human beings. We all make mistakes; some of us just get caught doing it. Can you think back to a moment of reckless decision-making that could have ended badly? In this episode, Max digs deep to share his personal history with mental illness and what prevented him from a tragic end to his life that was just starting. Max explores his history with anxiety and depression, which had been either repressed or forgotten until resurfacing in college. After graduation, he did what his family and the world expected of him and went straight into the rat race. After giving his all, he was laid off after only a month. That's when the dark thoughts took over, and he began considering suicide. We all grow up with expectations from our mentors, parents, or community, but I encourage everyone to take a page out of Max's book and intentionally sit down with themselves to figure out what their core values are.
