Welcome back to part of my interview with Samuel Marquis, author of numerous books of history and historical fiction, including his newest, "Captain Kidd: A True Story of Treasure and Betrayal."Samuel's previous book "'Blackbeard" won the Kirkus Reviews Book of the Year Award and his articles have been published in "History Central," "Writer's Digest," "The Lazy Historian," and "The Good Men Project," among other outlets.Today I'm talking with Samuel about what I call inner stuff–thought processes, internal dialogues, confidence–all that fun stuff! We covered:- Why villains are so fun to write (hint: it's not because they're evil)- Empathizing with folks who lived centuries ago and did things that we consider to be horrible today (like attending a public hanging on your wedding day, which Captain Kidd and his wife did)- His least favorite part of the writing process- Dealing with the nagging fear that you're not accurately portraying history- Looking for historical figures who were ahead of their time (because they make great characters)- Why Captain Kidd isn't the murderous pirate he was made out to be- Deciphering primary historical records–the handwriting, the different spellings (this was a really fun peek into the realities of writing about history)- Anchoring your research in the work of well-respected historians- How the idea that if you work hard things will come easily is a myth- Why he played competitive lacrosse until he was sixtyConnect with Samuel at samuelmarquisbooks.com.For full show notes with links to everything we discuss, plus bonus photos!, visit katehanley.substack.com.Thank you for listening! And thanks to this week's sponsor, Air Doctor Pro. Empathizing with Each OtherEmpathy is a fundamental human trait that allows us to connect deeply with others, understand their experiences, and respond with compassion. Here are several ways to practice and cultivate empathy in everyday life: Be Fully Present: When someone is speaking, give them your full attention. Avoid distractions and focus on their words and emotions. This shows that you value their thoughts and feelings1510. Non-Verbal Communication: Use body language like eye contact, nodding, and mirroring their posture to convey that you are engaged and empathetic511. Encourage Sharing: Ask questions that require more than a simple "yes" or "no" answer. This invites others to share more about their experiences and feelings, fostering a deeper connection411. Acknowledge Emotions: Validate the other person's emotions by saying things like, "I can understand why you feel that way" or "It's completely normal to feel that." Thishelps them feel heard and understood5. Be There: Show empathy by offering your support. Ask if there's anything you can do to help or if they would like to talk further about their feelings. Sometimes, just knowing someone is there can provide immense comfort5. Open-Mindedness: Approach conversations with an open mind and a non-judgmental attitude. Avoid making assumptions or jumping to conclusions about others' experiences or emotionsActive ListeningAsk Open-Ended QuestionsValidate Their FeelingsOffer SupportAvoid Judgment
In this episode of "ThinkFuture," host Chris Kalaboukis dives into a surprising study by Allstate Insurance that shows AI-generated emails being perceived as more empathetic than those written by humans. Chris explores why this might be, attributing it to AI's ability to draw from a vast database of human language to craft responses that are not only appropriate but also emotionally resonant. He discusses how AI, lacking personal ego or biases, can follow instructions to be empathetic more consistently than humans. Chris also touches on broader implications, like AI in rule-bound tasks such as driving, and suggests that if AI can outperform humans in certain areas like customer communication, perhaps human roles should evolve to focus on tasks where human judgment and creativity are paramount. This episode challenges listeners to reconsider the role of AI in enhancing, rather than just replacing, human endeavors.---The First Future Planner: Record First, Action Later: https://foremark.usBe A Better YOU with AI: Join The Community: https://10xyou.usGet AIDAILY every weekday. https://aidaily.usMy blog: https://thinkfuture.com
Creating legitimate points of access to justice is a cornerstone of our legal system. But when it comes to modern forms of abuse such as digital bullying or image-based sexual abuse, or even with children in the foster-care system, the path to justice is often retraumatizing, ill-equiped, or simply non-existent. My guest today is Allison Mahoney, the Founder and Managing Attorney of ALM Law, where she specializes in trauma-informed legal representation for survivors of abuse and children harmed in child welfare systems. With more than a decade of experience, Allison has built a distinguished career advocating for vulnerable children in foster care and those impacted by sexual abuse and domestic violence. Her work is defined by her deep commitment to securing justice for survivors. We discuss her early career and what drove her to pursue a line of work many of us would like to forget, why victim-blaming is so ingrained - even on a linguistic level, and what steps need to be taken to reform the system to serve the people who need it most. Enjoy the show.

On this episode of the Customers First Podcast, I have an enlightening discussion with Matt Lyles, a distinguished keynote speaker and customer experience consultant. We explore the profound impact of simplicity in creating memorable customer experiences. With an extensive background in brand management at FedEx, Matt shares valuable insights into how he has transformed customer experiences across diverse sectors, emphasizing his passion for fostering loyalty through simplicity. We dive deep into the concept that while creating a magical customer experience is critical, it must rest upon a foundation of simplicity. Matt argues that in our increasingly complex world, consumers gravitate to brands that can streamline their experiences. It's not about making things easier for businesses; it's about understanding and alleviating customers' hurdles in their brand interactions. Matt highlights research findings that showcase the benefits of prioritizing simplicity, revealing that 64% of consumers are willing to pay more for a straightforward experience, and 78% are likely to recommend brands that deliver such experiences. A compelling part of our conversation centers around the practical application of simplicity in customer interactions. Matt introduces the "SIMPLE" acronym, breaking it down into six actionable behaviours: Simple Never Stops, Innovate to Stay Ahead, Minimize Barriers, Prune it Back, Lose the Jargon, and Empathize with Your Customer. Each behaviour emphasizes continuously refining processes to meet customer needs while minimizing friction throughout the customer journey. Moreover, we must tackle customer experience misconceptions, particularly reducing customer service to a mere function rather than recognizing it as an integral part of the overall brand interaction. This mischaracterization leads to missed opportunities for fostering deeper relationships with customers. Matt reinforces that customer-centricity means placing the customer at the heart of every decision, fundamentally altering how companies view their operations. Domination consciousness leads us to believe that the louder we raise our voices, the faster the other person will capitulate and join our side. However, in order to create real change, the key is to get others to care about what it is we're caring about. And this is a much slower, longer, harder task.In this episode, a caller embarking on a trip to South Africa, asks how to put someone in their place - but in a nonviolent way! We explore how she can show up authentically with others and express her truths, without raising their defenses. The ultimate goal? To get them to care about what she cares about. We discuss:1:44 How can I show up authentically around my husband's colleagues when we see the world so differently?3:34 One of the dynamics present is the devaluation of indigenous history and culture 5:55 How to step out of the old domination game7:43 Making the implicit explicit12:54 Empathizing with the other side16:37 The importance of expressing care18:45 It's enough to introduce a disruptive voice into the room— Thank you for tuning in. Innovative Digital Marketing Solutions to Unlock Growth: https://powerdigitalmarketing.com/ In this episode of Chew on CRO, Ash and Ned discuss how losses can be beneficial for businesses by highlighting common mistakes brands make on their websites. They emphasize that new users typically do not scroll down far on homepages, suggesting that critical information should be placed above the fold. The importance of effective navigation is stressed, as most new users tend to use the menu rather than scrolling. They advocate for a user-centric approach, focusing on clear use cases and educational content in navigation. They also point out that rotating banners are often ignored, and brands should prioritize showcasing their most recognized products to new visitors.

Please join Kate and Sheila as they recap rule #2-All people deserve respect— in Jacob Hudgins book, House Rules. Respect may be a bit challenging to define but it is easy to see the lack of it. Where is respect taught first?... You guessed it–The home! We are made in God's Image and God values all people, yes ALL people, the good, the bad, and the disparaging. It is not about us or them, it is about our Heavenly Father, 1 Peter 2:17 says to ‘honor everyone', quite a challenge when leaders are unjust. David was a good example of respecting an unjust ruler. David could have killed King Saul but would not because he was the Lord's anointed, he trusted God's timing and was known as a man after God's own heart. This is a tough rule indeed. It is easy to see when this rule is not kept. In times past, manners, kindness, and courtesy were modeled in the home. Where/when did we lose ground in this arena? Instead of looking back and pointing fingers let's look forward and endeavor to make a change. Do you want to set your children up for a more joyful life? Give them the gift of respect. Thanks so much for listening as we strive to live lives pleasing to our heavenly Father! This week we have a diamante poem to highlight the contrast between the dark side and the light. Disrespect negative scornful Belittling, ignoring, interrupting Arrogance, inconsiderateness, appreciation, kindness Empathizing, listening, teaching Positive, valuable Respect Additional books mentioned in this podcast: Love & Respect: The Love She Most Desires; The Respect He Desperately Needs — by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer The Devil and the White City by Erik Larson --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/recapbookchat/message
Dr Zofia Bajorek is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Employment Studies (UK). She was HR Magazine's Most Influential Thinker in 2022 and 2023. Zofia's recent work has focused on the quality of work to improve workforce health and wellbeing. She describes why giving employees good quality work improves results, why good work matters, and what it comprises. Zofia explains how good management contributes significantly to employee retention and well-being. KEY TAKEAWAYS [02:33] Zofia studied psychology to understand how people think, as well as behavior change, why and how we do things. [04:17] Zofia's Master's focuses on the Future of Work and occupational stress/health at work. [05:03] Zofia is curious about temporary work arrangements after her own—voluntary—experience. [06:18] Temporary workers' different agency and autonomy affects their experiences and health. [08:01] Zofia's PhD analyzes temporary staff management and patient care in NHS emergency departments. [08:47] Possible safety/quality effects when emergency dept. employees get temporary assignments. [09:42] NHS ‘bank' and agency staff differences highlight many important talent management nuances. [11:56] A systems approach to analyzing the UK's ‘Speedy Summary Justice” – the promise. [12:45] The effect of disconnects in a system that is overworked, underpaid, and understaffed. [13:50] The practical reality of human messiness and how organizations and people work. [15:02] Evidence shows workers' health and wellbeing affects their productivity and retention. [16:00] Q: What interventions make the biggest difference to employees' health and well-being? [16:50] A: Good management and good employment relationships are the most impactful. [18:05] In 2006, two researchers discover “Work IS good for your health IF it's good quality work.” [18:26] People don't really know what good quality work is. [19:27] Good work includes: varied tasks that match interests and skills, co-collaboration, having a voice, autonomy and a fair work environment, with growth opportunities and strong work relationships. [22:50] “Secure work” depends on the contractual arrangement—imposed or two-way. [24:24] To achieve a healthy workplace with engaged employees, good quality work is essential. [25:42] An important factor is someone's choice about the work they have and can do. [26:27] Zero-hour contracts are detrimental when managed badly with no communication or flexibility. [27:28] Freelancers can have good choices: clients, autonomy, relationships, and interesting work. [28:48] Empathizing is important to discover what encourages people to work, their values, what they bring to the workplace. [30:26] Companies with embedded focus on wellbeing and good work pre-pandemic were able to transition well through and beyond the crisis. [31:36] Good management practices including consistent communication, listening, and workplace policies. [32:15] Zofia shares some examples of data points companies can colligate to increase understanding of their employees' well-being. [37:32] The challenges facing organizations are numerous, but a lot of the change can be addressed with good management practices. [43:55] Young and old want the same thing from the workplace, but demographic pressures are changing the face of retirement. [47:46] IMMEDIATE ACTION TIP: Good work requires good managers. Ensure those promoted to managerial positions have people management skills and technical excellence. They need training, coaching support, and feedback to help them continue to improve. And that is where we are still struggling because people don't know what good quality work is.” “Every human has fluctuating mental health. But what's important for the workplace is that work doesn't make it worse.” “If you want good work and good health, you have to have good management.”

Empathy can be a puzzling concept for a young child. They often need adults to model it for them. When reading stories or playing with the wooden peg people together, ask your child: “How do you think that person is feeling right now? How can you tell? How would you feel in his place?” Encourage your child to notice the clues in their environment and use them to draw conclusions. In this final episode in the executive function series, Senior Director of Programs at Zero to Three Rebecca Parlakian joins Host Jessica Rolph to look at how empathy fits into the critical thinking skills coming online for your 4 year old. Takeaways: Empathy is caught not taught. We are teaching our child what empathy is when we model it, but also when we empathize with them. Empathizing with our child doesn't mean that we're agreeing with them or doing exactly what they want us to do. Rather, it involves acknowledging that what we're asking them to do is hard for them. In order for a child to recognize that what they did was wrong, they have to accept some degree of shame. That's asking a lot of a 4 year old. Rebecca recommends shifting 100% of the attention to the child who has been hurt, and only later (in private), asking your child questions like: How did you know she didn't like it? Rebecca has 3 suggestions for building empathy in the day-to-day with your child: Try to imagine how your baby is interpreting a situation and put that into words. For example: “It's so frustrating when you can't reach your pacifier!” Suggest ways that your child can show empathy. Something like: “Your cousin fell and hurt his knee. Would you like to help me get the ice pack for him?” Explore empathy in pretend play. So if we're playing veterinarian, we can say: “The doggy has to have a shot, but look, he's feeling a little scared…” Finally, Rebecca suggests using the Imagine-if cards in the Examiner Play Kit as a way to build empathy. For example: “Let's imagine you're at preschool. What if a friend is feeling sad about saying goodbye to their mom or dad? What could you do to help them?” Mentioned in this episode: Brought to you by Lovevery.com Zero to Three Receive weekly emails about your child's development, and stay in the know about new play essentials, promos, and more by signing up at Lovevery.com Follow Lovevery and Jessica Rolph on Instagram
***This episode originally aired on February 16th, 2021***Connection. Empathizing. Offering choices. Cyberbullying or cyberharassment is a form of bullying or harassment using electronic means. With the rise of social media and technologies, cyberbullying has become very common among teenagers. Cyberbullying is very harmful and in fact traumatizing. In fact, Hana Kimura, from the Netflix's series Terrance House, took her own life in part due to the major stress she was getting from online bullies and haters. In this video, Psych2Go want to cover some of the main reasons why haters hate. Do you know any haters in your life? Are you dealing with haters right now? A hater is someone who's negative, who's critical, who judges you harshly for no reason. So, how to deal with haters, you might ask? Hate is almost impossible to avoid. "Haters gonna hate" and there's always going to be people out there who can't deal with who we are. But what can we do? Perhaps, understanding why they hate would be a good start. Empathizing can always be the start of a piece of mind. What do you think? Is empathizing being the bigger person? If you find this video helpful, you can share it with someone who might be experiencing cyberbullies, bullies, or haters to help them empathize. You value your relationships -- that's without a doubt. And, knowing that, I can imagine how many times people have come to you for advice. Maybe your friends, your mentees, or your family have come to you in moments where they're experiencing something in life that's troubling them. They trust you. They know you'll guide them. They know you hold space for them when needed. So, after that breakup or whatever it is, they can find comfort in speaking with you. But, what if I shared that your relationships can reach a new level IF you do this... Empathize with the people in your life by understanding the emotions they're experiencing rather than the experience they're going through. What does this mean? I'm sure you have experienced emotional pain. Maybe that pain was caused by the example above: heartbreak. And, when that friend comes to you after their moment of heartbreak, instead of empathizing by experience (the heartbreak), empathize by understanding the emotion: the pain (and what's under it). Dive into the full episode for the full thought dump on this. And, would love if you shared this with someone in your life.

I share my personal experience with anxiety and provide 13 helpful tips for navigating through it. Here are some key points we discuss: 1. Staying calm and understanding that other people's anxiety is not a reflection of us. 2. Empathizing with others and acknowledging their feelings without judgment. 3. Practicing active listening by fully focusing on what the other person is saying. 4. Validating their feelings and letting them know that we understand why they might feel that way. 5. Offering support by asking how we can be of help. 6. Utilizing relaxation techniques like deep breathing and grounding to manage anxiety in the moment. 7. Maintaining boundaries and encouraging others to seek additional help if necessary. 8. Redirecting negative thoughts and steering conversations towards positive or neutral topics. 9. Limiting exposure if someone's anxiety begins to make us uncomfortable. 10. Practicing self-care by participating in activities that help us relax and recharge. 11. Reflecting on why someone's anxiety affects us strongly and exploring ways to manage our own triggers. 12. Seeking support from friends, family, or professionals when needed. By implementing these tips, we can effectively manage our own anxiety and provide support to others who may be experiencing it. In the next segment of the podcast, we delve into navigating situations where someone in a position of power, like a boss or supervisor, is dealing with anxiety. The first tip is to maintain our own sense of calm in these scenarios. We should empathize with their work-related pressures and personal factors that may trigger their anxiety. Active listening is essential, allowing them to express their concerns while we attentively listen and respond in a measured manner. While offering support is encouraged, it's crucial to maintain professionalism and avoid getting too involved in their personal matters. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
