Ted Meyer’s work is influenced by his dealings with the health care system and his own health problems. Born with Gaucher’s disease, his early paintings depicted contorted and pained skeletal images. His current project “Scarred for Life, Monoprints of Human Scars” depicts scars as art, in particular, he has been working closely with veterans to record their scars and stories.

Starla Hairston-Blanks, MBA is the director of Health Promotion and Policy for Community Voices: Healthcare for the Underserved of Morehouse School of Medicine. As director of Health Promotion and Policy, Mrs. Blanks oversees the development of curricula, health education aids, technical assistance plans and trainings for community health workers and project staff focused on chronic disease and policy. Additionally, she is charged with the evaluation of numerous nationwide projects related to community health, access to care, health policy, diabetes and nutrition. To this position she brings experience working at the local, state, and national levels on health promotion, health policy, diversity and access to care issues. Mrs. Blanks has worked with community health workers, coalitions, health departments, school systems, community based organizations, and national networks on a variety of health promotion initiatives including diabetes, obesity, tobacco use, and chronic disease prevention. In addition, Mrs. Blanks has been published in journals such as the Journal of the National Medical Association and the Journal of Men's Health and her writings can be found in several books related to health disparities and the social determinants of health. She is a nationally recognized trainer with certifications in public health practice, adult learning, community organizing, smoking cessation and chronic disease. Mrs. Blanks holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and her Masters degree in Business Administration with a specialization in non-profit leadership. She currently is also enrolled in the University of New England's Master of Public Health Certificate program, making Mrs. Blanks the first UNE student to be featured as a Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration keynote speaker!

The 2013 Spring Symposium presents many faces of pain through evidence-based research, patient narratives, family stories, and portraits that translate pain in vivid and powerful ways. Chronic pain is recognized as a significant clinical and public health problem. The number of people in the United States living with chronic pain is estimated to be 75 million, and these represent those willing to share their pain with others. The symposium events will expose learners to knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to respond effectively, safely and with empathy to those living with chronic pain. Case Study We are honored to have a patient and family willing to tell their story for the purpose of deeper learning about pain and its related effects. Paula’s story will be translated into a case study available to students and instructors prior to the April 4, 2013 symposium. At age 13, Paula sprained her ankle. It did not respond to traditional treatments and over time her pain increased exponentially. Paula has subsequently endured chronic pain; multiple diagnoses have been proposed and she has been seen by a spectrum of health, mental health, and health-related professionals culminating in a diagnosis of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome or CRPS.

Regina Holliday is a DC-based patient rights arts advocate. Regina began painting a series of murals depicting the need for clarity and transparency in medical records. This advocacy mission was inspired by her husband, Frederick Allen Holliday, II, and his struggle to get appropriate care during eleven weeks of continuous hospitalization at five facilities. After his death resulting from kidney cancer on June 17, 2009, she began painting a mural entitled "73 cents."
