Anne Gross, PhD, RN, FAAN, is senior vice president for patient care services and chief nursing officer. Dr. Gross is responsible for adult and pediatric nursing practice across all sites of care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, The Phyllis F. Cantor Center for Research in Nursing and Patient Care Services, and the Center for Clinical and Professional Development. She also oversees a variety of other clinical services, patient and family programs, and Volunteer Services.       Since joining Dana-Farber in 2002, she has led implementations of a primary nursing care model and a residency training program for newly licensed nurses, and secured funding for programs and research to support inclusion, diversity and equity, positive practice environments, and self-care and renewal programs. She also is involved in committees, boards, and initiatives nationally and internationally and is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.       Dana-Farber continues to grow, and Nursing and Patient Care Services is continually evolving to meet the increasing need for our services with an inclusive and welcoming environment. Dana-Farber recently opened the International Patient Center in the Yawkey Center for Cancer Care. At our regional campuses, collaborative efforts among clinical teams led to increased enrollment in clinical trials and the first regional campus-specific trial. In Patient Care Services, there was a notable rise in requests for interpreter services and support through the patient-volunteer One-to-One Program.       These initiatives, and many others, have contributed to Dana-Farber's Magnet culture, resulting in the organization's fifth consecutive designation in 2024. Out of an estimated 6,200 hospitals and health systems nationwide, fewer than 1% have achieved a total of five Magnet designations. Dana-Farber's Inpatient Hospital also recently received two awards from Press Ganey for excellence in patient experience.       Nursing and Patient Care Services offers many educational and career development opportunities for current staff and future hires to advance their careers and ensure a highly skilled workforce.       Anne is touched by the stories she hears every day of the amazing work of our nurses and patient care services staff who often go above and beyond. Some examples include:• Staff at our Milford campus who recently organized and celebrated a high school graduation with a party for a patient.•       Our Brighton campus recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary of caring for patients.       Adults with cancer experience a significantly higher level of anxiety compared with the general population and so a group led by nurses launched a project to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of using medical-grade weighted blankets to reduce patient anxiety. They found that patients felt much less anxious using the weighted blankets, and now these are available in almost every infusion area across the institute. ·   This year, the Institute celebrates 25 years of our all-volunteer adult and pediatric Patient and Family Advisory Councils (PFACs).

As primary care providers, it's easy to assess a patient based on the symptoms and circumstances they present with when they walk in the door. However, patients who had adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may have psychological injuries from that trauma that are more difficult to recognize. These patients also have a lifelong risk for health problems. What if healthcare professionals changed their mindset from “what is wrong with this child?” to “what has happened to this child?” In this episode, we explore childhood trauma with two experts and dive into the concept of trauma-informed pediatric care. Guests: Lyndsay Jensen Gaffey, LPC, is the Director of Patient Care Services for the Pediatric Mental Health Institute at Children's Hospital Colorado. Steven Berkowitz, MD, works in the child and adolescent physiatry unit at Children's Hospital Colorado and is the Director of the START (Stress, Trauma, Research and Treatment) Center. John Gums, PharmD, FCCP - Professor and Associate Dean for Clinical and Administrative Affairs - and Eric A Dietrich, PharmD, BCACP, CPC-A, CEMC, CPB - Clinical Associate Professor from the University of Florida College of Pharmacy talk with us about billing for pharmacy services. Key Lessons: A sustainable clinical practice model is formulated by creating a business plan that considers the services to be provided as well as reasonable estimates of the number of patient encounters, the duration for each patient encounter, billable revenues, collections, and costs.  Evaluation and Management (EM) codes are used to bill services.  The complexity of the patient encounter characterizes the "level" of service, ranging from level 1 (minimal complexity, self-limiting problem) to level 5 (High, Chronic Conditions, Severe Exacerbation, Disease Progression). Comprehensive medication management services provided by pharmacists are typically billed by a recognized provider (physician / nurse practitioner) using an "incident to" billing method. Pharmacists can also bill for transitional care management (TCM), chronic care management (CCM), and annual wellness visits (AWV) - but each of these services must meet specific conditions and requirements under Medicare Part B. Learning to speak the language of billers and coders is critically important. Consider training or certification through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) There is a significant difference between what is billed and what is collected. Pharmacists should track their time, number of patient encounters, billable units of services, and collections to determine if their initial estimates are correct.  When there are discrepancies, determine the sources and address the causes. Check out these guidelines and resources on how to develop a business-practice plan and bill for pharmacists' patient care services: American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) - Developing a Business-Practice Model for Pharmacy Services in Ambulatory Care Settings American Association of College of Pharmacy (AACP) - Integration of Clinical Pharmacy Faculty in Professional Practice Care Settings National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) - Billing Guidance for Pharmacists' Professional and Patient Care Services

As the COVID-19 global pandemic has entered its third week, our healthcare providers are realizing the dramatic impact this has had on how we deliver care. Our lives have been touched not only professionally, but certainly personally as well. The uncertainty that this pandemic has driven into our lives is equally matched by the resiliency and ingenuity of our healthcare providers and larger community to come together to face this head on. In this episode, we will cover the current epidemiology of COVID-19, answer listener submitted questions and talk about the creative delivery of primary care that you could consider implementing in your practice as you navigate the pandemic. On the podcast we have previously covered the clinical presentation of the coronavirus in pediatrics, what providers should do if their clinical suspension is high and approaches to pediatric care during the mitigation phase of this pandemic – you can go back and listen to those discussions on Season 3, Episodes 31, 36 and 38. Clinical protocols are strict instructions or steps that must be followed absolutely without any compromise. These steps are based on the best evidence in literature on how to proceed in accomplishing a task or performing a treatment or a diagnosis. It's basically a roadmap for the dentist to follow. Dr. Marwan Abou-Rass is with us today to discuss how large dental practices can increase the quality and productivity of patient care services through the introduction and use of clinical protocols.    Dr. Abou-Rass holds a master’s degree in Dental Science in Prosthodontics, a certificate in Endodontics and a Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Abou-Rass served as Endodontic Department Chairman and Director of the Advanced Endodontic program at the University of Southern California, School of Dentistry (1971-2000) and Director AEGD program at (2000-2012). He is now USC Professor Emeritus, practicing endodontist and publisher of CEMENAOnline.com.  During the past few years, Dr. Abou-Rass has been focusing on his continuing education courses on the global problem of substandard care in endodontics and the reasons for the decline in the quality of endodontic education and practice.  Because general practitioners in the USA and Canada do about 75 to 80% of endodontic treatments, he believes that the introduction of clinical protocols in endodontics helps in improving the quality, efficiency, and productivity of general dentistry practices. In his educational career, Dr. Abou-Rass developed three clinical protocols in endodontics specifically written for General Practitioners  4R Operational Diagnosis Protocol Composite Post and Core Buildup Protocol Endodontic Treatment Finalization Protocol  Recently he produced two online continuing dental education master class series. The fist is “ Best Practices In Cracked Teeth Management “ An online five parts series totaling 14 hours of detailed information about his philosophies and approaches in endodontics and the relationship with cracked teeth. The second Master class series is “Advanced Diagnostics for Dental Hygiene Practice.” An online six parts series are totaling 6 hours of endodontic knowledge especially developed for Dental Hygienists.   CEMENAOnline.com

Clinical managing editor Karen Roush interviews Acieta Small, who discusses her implementation of a staff education program for improved patient care while she managed a med-surge unit at New York University’s large teaching facility, Langone Medical Center, in New York City. A quality of care assessment of the unit, staffed with long-term nursing attendants and RNs, found that patient care services were negatively impacted by practice issues such as attendant accuracy with vital signs, recording intake and output, and communication among the technicians and nurses. Although the RNs were involved in continuing education opportunities, technicians were not. Nurses volunteered to lead an initiative to upgrade technicians’ skills by addressing their educational needs. Both collaborated to define staff roles, which enhanced their team spirit for better patient care.

Does Better Design Make for Better Health?

Hospitals and clinics are not generally considered well-designed places for today’s healthcare needs. Work spaces for doctors and nurses can be crowded, too close to patient treatment areas, and missing new technology that would streamline care. At hospitals, patient rooms often lack windows or privacy. They can be cramped and far from waiting areas and cafeterias, making it more difficult to visit easily with family. But a growing number of hospitals and clinics are taking design and architecture into consideration with an eye toward patient outcomes and quality of care. The shifts have been shown to aid recovery, boost morale, decrease hospital-caused infections that can cost billions of dollars a year, calm patients, and create better communication between doctors, nurses, families, and patients. They have also helped clinics expand their services beyond primary care. Could good design make for good health, and save money in the process? Zócalo invited journalist Dana Dubbs, James Theimer, principal architect and founder of the Redding firm of Trilogy Architecture, Robin Orr, a board member of the Center for Health Design, and Mary Dee Hacker, Vice President of Patient Care Services of the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, to explore how medical care environments harm us, and how they could help us.
