Our guest this week is the actor, writer, director, sound designer and composer, Nicholas Briggs. Nick is probably best known as the voice of the iconic Doctor Who villains The Daleks and The Cybermen, which he began voicing on TV at the start of the 2005 revival.  Before that, he was writing and performing in audio dramas for Big Finish Productions, for which he's now their Creative Director. A second man is now charged in a brutal acid attack in New York that left a college student scarred and blind in one eye, as prosecutors say her former boyfriend helped plan it. This week's guest is actor, writer and producer Gary Russell.As a child actor, Gary starred in the classic BBC adaptation of The Phoenix and The Carpet, he also played Dick in The Famous Five, and had the starring role in the Scarred For Life favourite Dark Towers from the Look and Read series.  Gary has written extensively in the world of Doctor Who and spent six years as script editor of the TV series, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood under both Russell T. Davis and Steven Moffat. Gary co-created audio company Big Finish and had a key role as a producer in its early days. In 1966 Jonathan Miller's BBC Television adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic children's story caused something of a moral panic, even before it was broadcast. Amidst much foot-stamping, harrumphing and letters to the Editor the point was very much missed - yes, it was to be screened after nine o'clock in the evening and was not aimed at children but not because it contained questionable material (or, as some believed, 'X-rated filth'!). The writer and performer Bob Fischer first saw Miller's Alice In Wonderland about twenty-odd years ago and was immediately drawn in. It was a snapshot of the time it was made despite the period trappings, an example of early psychedelia with offbeat performances, thought-provoking visuals (inspired by Victorian photography), and an overall dreamlike undercurrent set to music by Ravi Shankar. All of it conveyed the torpor of an endless summer.Miller eschewed actors in animal costumes and was blessed with a stellar cast including Peter Sellers, Wilfrid Brambell, Peter Cook, Alan Bennett, Leo McKern and even Malcolm Muggeridge, not to mention the girl at the centre of the film, Alice herself, played by Anne-Marie Mallik. Bob & Tyler immerse themselves in the film and discuss its background, the controversy, the casting, story, score and much else besides. Bob throws in the odd Alan Bennett impression and wonders if 1966 AIW could in some ways have inspired both The Prisoner and The Rutles, and even draws some parallels with Revolver, released around the time the film was in production. Now, this is a more serious phrase, and we use it to talk about when something traumatic happens to someone and it's something that they will remember for the rest of their life. I guess the best example would be this. When I was a kid, we were sitting, waiting for a lift, bridge to come down, and a, person hit us from behind. And in some ways, in a very small way, I was scarred for life. I'm always afraid when I'm stopped somewhere now that someone's going to hit our car from behind. Luckily, when I was a kid, when that happened, no one was hurt. We had a really big car. The people who hit us, though, were injured quite badly. And I do remember I was probably 9 or 10 years old seeing the ambulance come to take those people out. So in a small way, I mean, other people have far more serious things happen to them. But in a small way, I was scarred for life.I don't teach serious phrases very often. But I think it's important.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? This phrase is sometimes used in a humorous way. Here's an example. Let's say you're watching a soccer game or a football game. Someone kicks the ball and it hits another player in the face. You might react by going, ooh, that's going to leave a scar, or, oh, that's going to leave a mark. Basically what you're saying is, there's probably going to be a bruise or something after that happens. You can also use this figuratively when something happens to someone that isn't an actual action. Maybe at work you get fired and you can say, you know, that's going to leave a mark. That's going to, going to leave a mark for that guy or for you. Because, yeah, losing your job is not fun.To review when you are scarred for life. It means something traumatic happened when you were younger and you still at times think about that in a negative way. You have negative emotions, and then that's going to leave a scar or that's going to leave a mark simply means that something physical has happened or something, you know, an action has just occurred that will, you'll remember it for a long time.Let's, let's look at a comment from a previous video. I'm not in the right mood to teach serious phrases. It's a tough thing to do, you know, I want to do an English lesson about death at some point, but I don't know how to do it well. So I just never do it. But maybe someday. This is from Zerevan. That old car needs a lot of gas. It's tough to have an old car. And my response, for sure, I'm surprised how much better on gas our new car is, although I am comparing it to my minivans, which are older and bigger, so maybe not a fair comparison. Thanks, Zerevan, for that comment.But, yeah, yeah, there was a car, in a video the other day a couple days ago. Whoa. That was a fast turn, Bob. And it was huge. It was enormous. What surprised me is many of you commented about the car, which was cool, but no one commented about the huge family of kids that walked by. At the beginning, I didn't realize they were behind me. I was in the zone when I was making that English lesson. And then when I sat down to edit it, I was like, how many kids are in that family? There was, like, one kid, two, three kids, four kids, five kids. It was a big family. So I'm glad my camera blurs people in the background out a bit, because I don't want to inadvertently put people in Support the show

From its humble beginnings as a tiny independent movie meant to be shown small audiences to a global phenomenon that raked in hundreds of millions of dollars this is the series that launched so many other found footage titles over the next decade for better or worse. Along with special guest Mary Beth McAndrews (Dread Central, Scarred For Life) your cohosts discuss how creator Oren Peli self-taught himself the basics of filmmaking and with a minimal cast and crew, made this supernatural chiller in his own home. We also dive into the themes present throughout the movie such as the toxic relationship between Katie & Micah that only makes the haunting worse, the way the film predicts our growing acceptance of constant surveillance, and the demonic as a microcosm of rampant consumerism and an economic system on the edge of collapse.
