Back in Australia! In this 5-Minute Friday, I’m checking in from Bondi Beach to clear up my recent travel whirlwind, AKA why I bounced between Sydney and LA, and preview the upcoming live show with Coach Bennett for the Nike After Dark Tour. Plus, we dive into the psychology of staying consistent on the road. After receiving a bunch of DMs about signing up for a local gym pass right after the marathon, I’m sharing the mindset behind it: where there is a "why," there is a way—and why motivation almost always follows action, not the other way around. Later, I answer a great listener question: Is running really for everyone, and should everyone run a marathon? I break down why anyone with a body who runs is a runner (pace and distance don't matter!), why you never need to chase someone else’s finish line, and the power of pursuing movement that genuinely feels good to you. Prompt of the Week: What goal is lighting you up right now? Whether it’s a big milestone, a habit change, or a short-term challenge, reach out and let me know on social. Vanessa breaks down the biggest scientific takeaways and most actionable gems from her recent conversation with Dr. Lee Breen, one of the world's leading researchers in protein metabolism, resistance training and skeletal muscle health across the lifespan. Before diving into the latest research, Vanessa shares an exciting update from her postpartum fat-loss and body-recomposition journey: she has lost five pounds since beginning her gentle fat-loss phase two weeks ago. She explains the four simple food swaps that reduced her intake by only approximately 150–200 calories per day, why the initial change likely includes water and glycogen as well as body fat, and how she is using three to four resistance-training sessions per week to gradually reveal her muscle while continuing to exclusively breastfeed baby Taylor. Vanessa also shares why she is deliberately giving herself the longest possible runway, why she does not expect to continue losing five pounds every two weeks, and why she plans to wait until Taylor begins eating solid foods before bringing Protein-Sparing Modified Fasting days back into her routine. One of the biggest themes from Dr. Breen's research is that losing weight and improving your body composition are not necessarily the same thing. Vanessa explores why the scale cannot tell you whether you are losing fat, water or metabolically active tissue; how much lean mass may be lost during significant weight loss; and why regaining weight after dieting or discontinuing a GLP-1 medication could potentially leave someone with less muscle and a higher body-fat percentage than when they started. She also examines how much protein may be needed to protect muscle during weight loss. Is approximately 1.4 grams per kilogram enough, or should you aim closer to 2–2.2 grams per kilogram? And how should that target change based on your body size, activity level, age and the aggressiveness of your calorie deficit? Create your own custom protein blend at truenutrition.com/vanessa and use code VANESSA for 20% off your first order. Let Vanessa know what your custom blend is! Now shipping internationally. Vanessa explains why protein and resistance training are most powerful when used together, why at least two whole-body resistance-training sessions per week can provide an effective starting point, and how training tells the body where the amino acids from dietary protein are needed. She also unpacks Dr. Breen's research comparing whey and pea protein in middle-aged and older adults. Whey produced a greater leucine response—but did that translate into more muscle protein synthesis over the complete 10-day intervention? The full results were more nuanced than a simple animal-versus-plant-protein conclusion. They also revealed something potentially even more important about the effect of resistance training on the muscle's ability to use the protein being consumed. Vanessa finishes with Dr. Breen's fascinating prehabilitation research showing that a single resistance-training session helped protect older adults' muscle during five days of bed rest, emerging evidence on whey protein and glycemic control, and the essential questions anyone using a GLP-1 medication should consider to help protect muscle and improve the quality of their weight loss. In this episode: Vanessa's latest postpartum fat-loss and body-recomposition update How she lost five pounds during her first two weeks of gentle dieting Why those five pounds are unlikely to represent body fat alone The four simple swaps that reduced her intake by approximately 150–200 calories per day Why she expects her rate of weight loss to slow from here How she is approaching fat loss while exclusively breastfeeding Why she is deliberately giving herself a longer fat-loss runway Her goal of protecting her muscle—and potentially more facial fat and collagen—this time Why she is waiting until Taylor begins solid foods before reintroducing PSMF days How three to four weekly resistance-training sessions are supporting her body recomposition Why she plans to complete another DEXA scan at the end of the process Why losing weight and improving body composition are not necessarily the same thing How much lean mass may be lost during significant weight loss Why lean mass loss is not always identical to contractile-muscle loss What may happen to body composition when lost weight is regained The potential consequences of losing fat and muscle but regaining predominantly fat Why the scale should not be your only measure of progress DEXA scans, measurements, strength, performance, photographs and clothing fit Why muscle preservation must be built into a fat-loss plan from the beginning Is 1.4 grams of protein per kilogram enough during weight loss? When 2–2.2 grams per kilogram may provide additional muscle protection Why the conventional protein RDA should not be treated as an optimal fat-loss target When goal weight, adjusted body weight or estimated lean mass may provide a more appropriate calculation Why protein and resistance training work better together How training helps your muscles use the amino acids you consume Why two whole-body resistance-training sessions per week can be an effective starting point How to begin resistance training without a complicated program or gym membership Why breakfast may be the most important protein meal to improve The potential benefits of approximately 0.4 grams of protein per kilogram per meal How to create a breakfast containing approximately 25–40 grams of protein Why two eggs may not provide as much protein as many people assume When protein's appetite-suppressing effect is helpful—and when it may not be Why an enormous protein shake could be counterproductive for a frail older adult with a low appetite Whey protein vs. pea protein in Dr. Breen's latest research Why whey produced a greater leucine response Did the higher leucine response produce more muscle protein synthesis? Why well-planned plant protein can still support muscle remodeling When protein quality may become more consequential Why nothing has consistently outperformed whey protein Why whey can be especially efficient when calories or appetite are limited The benefits of a "food first, but not food always" approach When a protein supplement can be a practical tool Why ingredient quality and third-party testing matter Could one resistance-training session help protect muscle for five days? What prehabilitation may mean before planned surgery or predictable inactivity How Vanessa used a similar strategy before delivering her babies Why building muscle now creates a reserve for future illness, injury or inactivity Can whey protein help improve post-meal glycemic control? Why the idea that whey is automatically bad for blood sugar because it stimulates insulin is overly simplistic Previous research using approximately 15 grams of whey with or before carbohydrate-rich meals Dr. Breen's ongoing trial in adults over 75 with obesity and type 2 diabetes The difference between completed findings and promising ongoing research Why protein, resistance training and diet quality become more important—not less—when using a GLP-1 medication The questions every GLP-1 user should consider about protein, strength, fiber, micronutrients and long-term maintenance Vanessa's practical action plan for losing fat while protecting muscle BACK TO SCHOOL SALE! Home affairs minister Tony Burke delivered a speech at the National Press Club on Thursday, announcing immigration reforms to achieve Labor's forecasts for net overseas migration. After being postponed at short notice six weeks ago, Burke's speech comes in the same week that One Nation announced its policy to significantly cut the number of temporary migrants in Australia. Political editor Tom McIlroy speaks to Burke about why the government is making the changes, the limitations that come from not successfully securing Coalition support, and why new migrants aren't to blame for the housing crisis

There is something magical about flight. Since the dawn of time, humans have yearned to soar like birds. Lacking wings of our own, we built machines to conquer the sky, and in today's jet age, roughly 4.5 billion people take to the air each year. Yet the sky is not our natural environment, and the dangers multiply rapidly high above the ground. In this program, we meet a man who knows those risks all too well. Chris Rantall fell 10,000 feet (3 kilometres) to the earth and lived to tell the story. But his survival came at a devastating cost.On July 30, 2021, Chris boarded a light aircraft at Torquay on Victoria's coast in Australia. It was meant to be a celebration: a tandem skydive with his daughter, Raya, for her 30th birthday. Raya and her instructor jumped first. Moments later, Chris followed, harnessed to Arron Toepfe, an experienced jumper with more than 6,000 descents to his name. What should have been a routine freefall and a smooth landing was about to go terribly wrong.
Pete Alonso's return to Citi Field as a Baltimore Oriole delivered a curtain call for his 300th career home run — and it's just the beginning of a stacked Thursday Night Live.

What if I told you that the biggest hurdle to your organization's success might just be a blind spot lurking in plain sight? Today, we're diving into that very idea with Hacia Atherton, the trailblazing first female CEO of a major plumbing company in Australia. Hacia's journey—one that includes surviving a near-fatal accident—has fueled her mission to transform workplace cultures into safer, more inclusive spaces that genuinely unlock human potential. We'll explore how the cultures we create can either propel us forward or quietly drain resources, costing businesses billions. Stick around, because this conversation might just flip your perspective on leadership, psychological safety, and the hidden costs of exclusion.Takeaways:The greatest threat to an organization's growth might just be the blind spots we overlook, often hiding in plain sight.Creating a workplace culture that unlocks human potential can save businesses billions, so it's worth the effort. Our guest, Hacia Atherton, shattered industry barriers as the first female CEO of a major plumbing company in Australia, talk about trailblazing!Hacia's near-fatal accident transformed her perspective on resilience and leadership, leading to a movement for safer, inclusive workplaces. This episode challenges conventional leadership views by emphasizing the importance of psychological safety and inclusion, which are often ignored.Real success in leadership is about valuing people as humans, not just cogs in a machine, and recognizing their contributions at every level.Links referenced in this episode:haciaatherton.combarnesandnoble.comamazon.com

The gain comes from a battery that grows from 19 kWh to 41.2 kWh and a stronger motor. The T8 manages 117 miles, easily beating the BMW X3 30e (56 miles) and Mercedes GLC PHEV (80 miles), and the XC90 PHEV rises to 100 miles, with both long-range hybrids expected in North America.BYD ATTO 1 OFFERED FOR $19,990 DRIVEAWAYBYD is offering the Atto 1 Essential for A$19,990 driveaway in Australia until 15 December unless extended, a 26% discount from A$23,990 plus on-road costs. That makes it the country's cheapest new car and undercuts the petrol Kia Picanto. It has a 65 kW motor, a 30 kWh LFP battery, 220 km WLTP range, 65 kW DC charging, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, and adaptive cruise control, while the rival Geely EX2 starts from A$26,490 plus on-road costs.HYUNDAI AND KIA EXPORT 591,000 ELECTRIFIED VEHICLESHyundai and Kia exported 591,000 electrified vehicles in the first half of the year, up 22.3%, according to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association. Hybrids drove the growth as Hyundai prioritised the US, lifting hybrid exports there by 38% in response to IRA tax-credit changes and consumer demand. Combined EV exports rose 12.7% to 162,000, but Hyundai's fell 12.4% while Kia's climbed 34.3% to almost 104,000 between January and July, helped by the EV2, EV4, EV5 and PV5 van in Europe.RENAULT UNVEILS 800 V ELECTRIC TRAFIC VANRenault unveiled the Trafic Van E-Tech Electric at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover, built on the 800 V RGEV medium-van platform with an 81 kWh battery. It claims more than 470 km of range, nearly 690 km in urban driving (not an official figure), and 280 km added in 20 minutes of charging. Renault says total cost of ownership is 10% lower than a combustion equivalent, and the van adds vehicle-to-load, new multi-link rear suspension, and a planned electric power take-off for conversions such as refrigeration and ambulances. It is part of a plan for five new LCVs by 2028, following 2.8 million Trafics sold since 1980.SCANIA SAYS BATTERY LAYOUT CAN INCREASE RANGE TO 720 KMScania's new Battery Behind Cab layout adds two MP20 packs behind the cab to supplement chassis-mounted batteries, raising electric truck range to up to 720 km for long-haul operators. Scania claims this doesn't reduce operational flexibility, and the layout works with its aerodynamic Increased Vehicle Dimension front and vehicles longer than 16.5 m, alongside the rollout of megawatt charging (MCS).CATL UNVEILS TECHTRANS 2 TRUCK BATTERYCATL unveiled Techtrans 2, a modular battery for medium- and heavy-duty trucks and buses, at IAA Transportation. It claims up to 1,000 km of range, 80% charging in 25 minutes via a megawatt charger, and 70% capacity retention after 12 years or 1.5 million km. At 170 Wh/kg it still forces fleets to trade range against payload, while 300–400 Wh/kg chemistries head to test vehicles in 2027 and solid-state could double density, starting in high-end applications.ENGLAND PLANS CROSS-PAVEMENT EV CHARGING RIGHTSFollowing consultation, the government has confirmed plans for permitted development rights that would let eligible homes in England with on-street parking install cross-pavement charging gullies without a planning application. Highways authority approval remains a separate requirement. With four in ten UK households lacking off-street parking and relying on pricier public charging, the change aims to cut costs and red tape, though it won't stop others taking the space outside your home.GERMANY CONSIDERS PLUG-IN HYBRID AND EREV TARIFFSGermany will seek cabinet approval on 14 October for economic-security measures that could include tariffs on plug-in hybrids and EREVs. Chinese makers have used these vehicles to sidestep EU tariffs on battery-electric cars and grow European sales. Ministers are also weighing mandatory joint ventures with European majority ownership and stronger investment requirements, a tougher, more reciprocal China stance for export-reliant Germany before it seeks uncertain EU backing.JAC PLANS 2027 HUNTER PHEV CAB-CHASSIS FOR AUSTRALIAJAC plans to launch a Hunter PHEV cab-chassis in Australia in 2027 to rival the BYD Shark 6, letting tradespeople, fleets and farmers fit trays, canopies or toolboxes. It is expected, but not confirmed, to share the powertrain of the dual cab. That dual cab is now in dealerships from A$50,000 plus on-road costs for the Pro, and offers up to 100 km electric range, more than 1,000 km combined, 3.3 kW V2L, 3.5-tonne towing, 915 kg payload, and seven-year commercial warranty, servicing and roadside cover.HULL 096 REACHES SOUTH AMERICAHull 096, the world's largest battery-electric ship, built by Incat in Tasmania, has arrived in South America after a heavy-lift vessel carried it from Hobart across the Pacific and around Cape Horn in under a month. After commissioning, it will carry more than 2,000 passengers on a 30-nautical-mile River Plate route between Buenos Aires and Colonia, Uruguay. Incat is also building three similar ferries that will be the EU's largest of their type.

Hide your China, the boys are at it again with a drink and a discussion of 2011's “Warrior”. Gavin O'Connor's film found Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton at the perfect time, and he paired them with legend Nick Nolte for one of his best performances. Jeff also saw “Practical Magic 2” in the theaters on 9/11 and gives a mini-review. Two very different films! They both go well with drinks. The university sector is pushing back against One Nation's migration plan, which would cut hundreds of thousands of international student and graduate places over three years. Pauline Hanson says she's reflecting the will of the people, but industry leaders say the policy could wreak havoc on the economy and worsen skills shortages. The policy has also prompted fresh calls for reform and investment in research and education. In this podcast episode, we hear how One Nation's proposed migration cuts have triggered strong opposition from universities, student groups and industry leaders, who argue the policy would harm education, research, economic growth and Australia's skilled workforce. The main points:One Nation has proposed major migration cuts:The party wants to reduce migration by more than 750,000 places over three years, targeting international students, graduate visa holders, skilled migrants and their families.Universities warn of serious economic and research impacts:University leaders argue the cuts would damage Australia's international education sector, reduce research funding, hurt the economy, and put jobs at risk. They say international education contributes billions of dollars annually. The policy has become part of a broader political debate:Critics from the university sector say One Nation is not alone in seeking tighter student migration settings, arguing both Labor and the Coalition have also supported measures such as student caps and visa restrictions.International students and universities reject claims they are "visa factories"Student representatives say international students have not been properly consulted in the debate and support stronger quality controls rather than arbitrary visa cuts. Universities argue most international students return home after graduating and are not using study as a migration pathway.Business groups warn the cuts could worsen skills shortages:Industry leaders say reducing skilled migration and graduate visas could deepen existing labour shortages in sectors such as engineering, healthcare, aged care, trades and cybersecurity. They are calling for a more efficient and transparent migration system instead of large reductions.

Since July, Australia's competition regulator has had the power to examine the big supermarkets' books to see how much they are paying suppliers, and what they're charging customers. From there, it can assess whether a supermarket has excessive profit margins...if so, they could face a fine of up to A$10 million dollars. To explain how it's working in Australia, and what New Zealand can learn from it, Dr Meg Elkins spoke to Guyon Espiner. She's a cultural and behavioural economist, and an associate professor at Melbourne's R.M.I.T. University.
We crossed the Tasman to talk to our correspondent Richard Willingham from ABC in Victoria.

Some of the biggest names in technology are backing calls for greater caution over the development of artificial intelligence, amid warnings increasingly powerful systems could become difficult to control. The head of Anthropic, Dario Amodei, has called for stronger safeguards, while Elon Musk and OpenAI chief Sam Altman have publicly backed elements of his proposal. And the debate has reached Australia, where political leaders, technology experts and security specialists are examining what increasingly powerful AI could mean for the country and the wider Indo-Pacific.
Madison Dell'Aquila is, as her website proudly states, "constantly looking forward to challenging what people say can't be done." That mindset is strongly applied with the new platform Heretica, a website which aims to enhance the opportunities that women and gender diverse crew have on film and TV productions in Australia all the while dismantling the gender divide that exists in one of Australia's major cultural institutions. While Screen Australia has an initiative to address the gender divide in the screen industry - see the Gender Matters initiative - there's still minimal awareness of who is working within the industry who identifies as a women or non-binary. Heretica aims to address this by being a platform that provides people who wish to engage with women and non-binary crew the opportunity to make film and TV sets more reflective of real life. Having recently launched in August 2026, Heretica has already started to build an impressive array of names and creatives who are eager to start breaking down the gender division in the industry. In the last interview in our first Heretica Interviews series, and hopefully not the last, Andrew talks with Madison about the inspiration to force a change in an industry that has so often felt like it's resisted progressing into a better state of being. What does it take to grow one of America's biggest sporting brands in a market already obsessed with sport? In this episode of The CMO Show, Mark Jones sits down with Charlotte Offord, General Manager of NFL Australia, to explore how the league is building fandom, relevance and cultural impact far beyond its home market. From launching the NFL's first regular season game in Australia to growing the local fan base from 5.7 million to 8.8 million fans in just over three seasons, Charlotte shares the strategy behind one of sport's most ambitious international expansion stories. Charlotte explains why the NFL sees itself as more than a sports league, positioning the brand at the intersection of entertainment, fashion, music, lifestyle and culture to reach new audiences. She discusses the importance of listening before entering a new market, creating locally relevant experiences, and finding the passion points that turn curious consumers into lifelong fans. The conversation also explores how the NFL has transformed itself from a seasonal sports property into a 365-day-a-year engagement engine through content, live events, participation programs, digital experiences and community initiatives. Along the way, Charlotte shares practical lessons on audience growth, customer engagement, innovation, and why marketers should never dismiss a bold idea too quickly. For marketing leaders looking to grow brands across new markets, build stronger communities and create lasting customer loyalty, this episode offers a masterclass in fandom, experience design and cultural relevance. Alistair Day is General Counsel for International at AECOM, the US-headquartered construction and engineering business, leading a team of 65 lawyers across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia and New Zealand. He joined AECOM seven years ago and stepped into the international GC role three years ago, having started out covering the UK and Ireland before his remit grew to include India, Europe, and beyond. Before AECOM, Alistair trained as a litigator and made partner in private practice, before moving in-house to Bechtel. In this episode of Lessons I Learned in Law, Alistair talks about what makes for a genuinely embedded legal function, why the litigator-to-in-house move is often underrated, and how AECOM is putting AI and legal ops to work. His three lessons: first, confidence in having a voice — the best in-house lawyers don't just advise on the legal risk, they engage with what the business is trying to achieve, and that confidence builds over time and repeated exposure to the exec table. Second, flexibility and embracing change — there's never been a more exciting time to be an in-house lawyer, but that means genuinely engaging with AI and technology rather than assuming the job stays the same. Third, have a real passion for the industry you're in — people can tell whether a lawyer actually cares about what the business does, and that interest is what earns trust and buy-in.He also shares due-diligence questions for lawyers considering a move in-house — including whether legal reviews decisions or actually approves them — and reflects on why litigators often make excellent in-house hires. This episode is brought to you in partnership with Wordsmith AI — the legal AI platform built specifically for in-house teams.Resources & Links Mentioned in This EpisodeRegister your interest in joining The Lodge In-house Legal Community: https://bit.ly/TheLodgebyHBHeriot Brown: https://heriotbrown.com/Wordsmith AI: https://www.wordsmith.ai/Legal Engineering Project Application form: https://wordsmith.fillout.com/legalengprojectListen to the PodcastSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/61xrrepWuWxNsnXIaYxsj5Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/lessons-i-learned-in-law/id1563397804YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/@HeriotBrownInHouseRecruitmentConnect with Heriot Brownhttps://heriotbrown.com/About Heriot Brown: At Heriot Brown, we help lawyers find fulfilment in their careers.
