“Unfortunately over the years birth has become so medicalised. Birth is not a medical event. It can become a medical event. When it does, we have all the help in the world.” Seeing crap or misinformation around birthing was a huge motivation for Melissa to take on the role as a clinical hypnotherapist. This gave her the ability to help people feel empowered throughout the birthing process. We had four sessions with Melissa in the lead up to our firstborn and the process was incredible. I felt calm from the moment my wife started to feel the “surges” (contractions) to the moment our son was born. My wife Taneal couldn’t speak highly enough of the classes we had with Melissa. The tools we were given have helped us in different areas of our life. A lot of the mental applications that Melissa talks about are relatable to me because it applies in the sporting world - how to deal with pain, visualization, meditation, belief, trusting yourself. All are key in helping you perform at your best. We chat: Clinical hypnotherapy - focused attention and mindfulness has a great ability to help the birthing process. How she used visualization to help her get appearances with major media outlets throughout Australia - Sunrise, Today Show and many others. Hypnosis for dealing with pain - especially while birthing. Your subconscious beliefs control your behaviour, which controls your motivation which becomes your reality. Using self-hypnosis leading up to major events. Vision boards to help you get what you want. Ways to improve your study time and how to retain more information. Getting a hold of your flight or fight response. You have to see it, hear it, say it and feel it consistently over a long period of time for it to come true - whatever that dream may be. Your mind is like a computer. You need to shut it down every night completely so it can have a full rest. Watching negativity, the news etc, before sleep will keep the computer on all night which results in overheating and stress. To get in touch with Melissa visit: https://www.facebook.com/hypnobirthingaustralia https://hypnobirthingaustralia.com.au “The Hypnobirthing Australia program is uniquely designed for Australian mothers and their birthing partners. Hypnobirthing Australia classes prepare you with the knowledge, confidence and tools you need to birth calmly. Birth can, and should be a positive experience - one that you will always want to remember.” About David Mead David Mead has played professional rugby league for 13 years. Dr. Erin Bowe is a Clinical & Perinatal Psychologist, Course Creator, Business Mentor and Author of More Than a Healthy Baby: Finding Strength & Growth After Birth Trauma. She has attracted over 2000 students in less than 12 months, so this speaks volumes to how much this work is needed. You can learn more about Erin here: www.doctorerin.com.au

As she was a first time mum, Ellie decided to book in with a private Obstetrician so that she could have continuity of care through a private hospital near by to her home. Ellie and her husband Alex took a private Hypnobirthing Australia course to prepare for a low intervention and relaxed water birth.   Ellie’s identical twin sister made the journey back to the Gold Coast from Bali during Covid and was required to isolate in a hotel for 14days when she arrived. Ellie was able to drop off parcels and wave to her from outside and they both crossed their fingers that Ellie wouldn't go into labour early.    To hear more about how Elli’s birth unfolded, tune into this week’s episode.

In today’s episode, I interview Melissa Spilsted. Melissa shares with us the stories of her three pregnancies and vaginal births. After attending birth classes at the private hospital where she planned to birth her first baby, Melissa was very disappointed and found the education lacking. She carried on to do her own research and armed herself with tools and knowledge, doing everything she could to train her body and mind.    At 37 weeks Melissa met Leanne Jackson (a hypnotherapist) who she then saw for a session. At 41 weeks she went into labour naturally and had a really calm, beautiful labour using the techniques Leanne had taught her. One minute after her son was born she said to her husband ‘Let’s do this again!’  Melissa went on to have two more babies, both water births, using hypnobirthing techniques. She was inspired to train as a hypnotherapist and hypnobirthing practitioner after her successful use of the techniques throughout all of her labours. Melissa then founded the highly successful Hypnobirthing Australia program. In her program Melissa uses evidence based tools and techniques for positive birth experiences (however a baby is delivered) and feels a strong sense of justice in helping women achieve the beautiful births they deserve. She believes ‘Labour and birth can be the highlight of your life’.

In this episode of the Social Lights Podcast, podcast host and Social Mediology founder Kate vanderVoort chats with Melissa Spilsted, Founder and Director of Hypnobubs (https://www.hypnobubs.com/) . ABOUT MELISSA, HYPNOBIRTHING AUSTRALIA, AND HYPNOBUBS Melissa started out in the travel industry, and would travel to new places for days, weeks, and even months at a time, trying to find out her reason for being. Upon arriving in Australia, Melissa began to teach travel and tourism to others. She had finally found her passion—teaching. She completed an education degree and a drama degree, but realized that she wasn’t suited to teaching at schools. Melissa then met her husband, and over the years, had three children. Hypnobirthing classes weren’t readily available back then, so she read books and created her own form of hypnobirthing for her children. She realized that all of her previous experiences and training pointed her towards the same direction. She used the knowledge acquired from her degrees to teach hypnobirthing. It was kind of by accident and it wasn’t at all what she planned to do, but here she is. Today, Hypnobirthing Australia and Hypnobubs are the fastest growing childbirth education courses in Australia. Through them, Melissa is also able to teach hypnobirthing techniques to parents and practitioners from all over. BIG IDEA 1 Hypnobirthing, is a fancy word for a positive birth. (7:20) While the term hypnobirthing sounds a bit weird, it refers to the use of self-hypnosis—a state of deep relaxation tapping into your own subconscious. These skills are used to stay calm during birth. The time of giving birth, after all, is an intense collision of the physical, emotional, and spiritual. Hypnobirthing helps one to create and maintain a really positive mindset, remove fear leading up to birth, and also to be able to chill and to release and let go during birth. Self-hypnosis is just a small part of hypnobirthing. Hypnobirthing is a comprehensive, evidence-based antenatal course that covers everything from tools and knowledge to support and preparation. Women don’t have the same care during their actual labor as they have had through their pregnancy. (9:38) Hypnobirthing provides a certain continuity of care. Women in Australia and all over the world end up birthing with strangers—but the one thing that is constant is having one’s partner there. BIG IDEA 2 They’re skills for life. (21:35) Melissa knows how beneficial hypnobirthing is for babies, mothers, and families—and has always wanted to make hypnobirthing accessible to everyone. However, she realized that she has been limiting her big plan. Their online course is very popular, and is actually the leading antenatal course in Australia. Hypnobirthing Australia gets so much interest internationally for their programs, and she receives weekly requests from countries who want to translate their online courses or teach their face-to-face courses. All Melissa needs to expand internationally is the right people in her realm to help and support her, and so she’s ready to expand this year. BIG IDEA 3 Trust your instincts. (31:00) Melissa was a trained teacher and had a fantastic job. Though she was happy and loved what she did, she knew that her instinct told her that she could make more of an impact by creating her new business. She took a leap of faith in many ways. Her advice? Take the chance. Because if you really want to experience joy and joy beyond where you are now, sometimes you need to make some changes and take some risks (31:59). In today’s episode, I interview Hannah Polites. Hannah is a midwife who worked in the hospital system for five years before she fell pregnant with her daughter, Avaliah. She speaks candidly about the pressure and the privilege of being a midwife giving birth and admits that during her first birth, she was acutely aware of the birth process and yet somewhat unprepared for the emotional and mental challenges. “I felt like I knew everything about the physiological birth process and what to expect but I didn’t know how I was going to personally handle it. I also knew that you can have all of these plans and it can all change so quickly,” she says. After 24hours of niggling, unproductive contractions following her waters breaking, Hannah and her husband Garth, a Paediatric Registrar, went to the hospital to check on the baby. Instead of being induced she opted for expected management yet it took three days of period pain cramps and acupuncture treatment to kick start labour. “I was over analysing everything because I’m a midwife and I was acting transitional so when I got to the hospital to discover I was 2cm I just lost it.” She agreed that it was best to have an epidural so she could relax but unfortunately her baby’s heart rate plummeted then spiked and it was decided that an emergency cesarean was required. Thankfully she could feel the deep pressure of the contractions despite the epidural and she asked her midwife to assess her. She was 10cm so the Obstetrician agreed to do a vacuum delivery. “I said: No, I don’t give you permission to give me an episiotomy and my midwife advocated for me. I was ok with tearing but unless absolutely necessary I didn't want an episiotomy,” she says. Hannah admits that coming so close to receiving an episiotomy - a birth injury - and then not tearing was a major part of her story. “That was huge for me and it took me a long time to get past it. I became scared of the birth process because it was an emergency situation in the end. Ultimately I felt so much pressure that as a midwife, I should have coped better.” She admits that she started questioning her personal and professional ability.  This guilt plagued Hannah when she fell pregnant with her second baby and she had terrible nightmares from the outset. She sought the help of a one-on-one hypnobirthing practitioner Shari Lyon from Belly 2 Birth, who helped her and Garth move through the birth trauma and actively prepare for her second birth.  “The first class was really about identifying my fears and how they made us feel and after that we debriefing and started building a tool kit of skills to take with us into birth. It was amazing how connected Garth and I were during Arlo’s pregnancy; we were doing regular meditations, breathing techniques and listening to tracks together. We opened up and talked about our issues...hypnobirthing helped us establish a very strong birth partnership.” Within three weeks of starting her hypnobirthing practice, Hannah started to get excited about giving birth and embraced her pregnancy despite nausea, low blood pressure, bleeding and early labour symptoms. She went into Arlo’s birth with a positive mindset and a skillset that literally carried her through the entire labour and to an ecstatic delivery.

Australia’s nurses and midwives are overworked, under supported and in serious danger of burning out, with 32 per cent considering leaving the profession. This is according to findings of a Monash Business School survey of nurses and midwives’ wellbeing. My guest today has found the confidence to work in a way that is aligned with her soul purpose, so that she’s not going to be another statistic. If you want a sustainable career as a midwife, you need to actively level up your self-care and support. These are teachable skills. Hannah Willsmore is an Endorsed Midwife in private practice, a life coach and a buddy of mine from Hypnobirthing Australia. She is based in Adelaide, and runs childbirth education and women’s circles. At fifteen years of age, Hannah managed to swing work experience in a hospital. She got into the labour ward and watched a cesarean birth. Can you imagine that ever happening now?! With the spirit of knowing that midwives are so often just doing the best they can with shitty conditions, Hannah and I talk about how we can be preventing burnout and preventing birth trauma We look at language- using person-centered language instead of medicalised language Making things seem like an emergency when it’s not And issues around Informed consent We also talk about the importance of having a supportive network and not waiting until you’re stressed to seek support. If your support system doesn’t actually make you feel better and have you walking away lighter, then there’s something that needs some tweaks I want you to stay in birth work, if that’s your goal. Let’s talk about actionable steps to help make that happen. For all the resources and people mentioned, go to the podcast section of http://doctorerin.com.au/podcast/

Sometimes I notice women chatting on social media about having read a book on hypnobirthing but it didn't really work for them. Other times couples think that hypnobirthing looks like it will be a bit too woowoo or way too alternative for them. Many of my past clients say that we should change the name "hypnobirthing" as it conjures up images of people doing silly things like clucking like a chicken on stage and the name gives the wrong impression of what hypnobirthing is. In this episode I talk about why it is important to not just read a book, but attend the classes with a qualified Hypnobirthing Australia™ practitioner and the reasons why - because hypnobirthing is so much more than just reading a book or being hypnotised.

In this weeks episode, I interview Sarah Hocking. Sarah first found out she was pregnant when she was in her first year of primary teaching. The pregnancy came as a shock as they were planning their wedding however they soon became really excited. At Sarah's eight week scan they discovered they had miscarried their baby. Devastated by their loss, Sarah decided to throw herself into her wedding preparation.  Nine weeks prior to the wedding Sarah found out she was pregnant. Thrilled to be pregnant Sarah went through the care at the Mercy Hospital in Melbourne. Sarah had had a stroke at the age of 24 which meant she was categorized as high risk during her pregnancy. Sarah was diagnosed as having placenta previa and as she was on blood thinning medication from her stroke, she had to watch out for any bleeding. Due to the placenta's positioning Sarah was booked in for a caesarean section. A week before her scheduled Caesarean section Sarah's vision began to deteriorate and she initially thought it was due to tiredness. She went to see the doctor and she said if it gets worse come back in for more tests. Sarah was watching the news with her husband and she started crying as she couldn't see the faces of the news readers properly. They decided to go to the hospital and they had monitoring and then the doctor came back in and he thought she should have a CAT scan to rule everything out. At this stage, they were just waiting for results and she sent her husband home for some rest.  At 3 am she was woken when all the lights in her room came on and a team of doctors came in and said “You're going to be in for a really rough ride. We've found three clots in your brain.”   To hear more about Sarah's journey tune into this weeks episode. To connect with Sarah and her blog   Today's episode is sponsored by Renee from .
