Send us a textThe educational landscape is undergoing a profound transformation through artificial intelligence, and mindfulness education stands at this exciting frontier. In this thought-provoking exploration, Amy Edelstein reviews Sal Khan's new book "Brave New Words" and unpacks the potential and challenge of AI tutors to support students' inner development, while maintaining crucial human connections.Amy examines Khan's great success with Khan Academy and the AI Khanmigo, looking specifically at how AI tutors can personalize learning experiences, making first-class education and tools more accessible. AI tutors can deliver mindfulness content in students' native languages, honor cultural contexts, and support English language learners in contributing their unique perspectives despite language barriers. Imagine a classroom where students speaking Mandarin, Ukrainian, Spanish, and Vietnamese can all engage with the same wellness curriculum, then bring diverse insights to group discussions. With proper guardrails preventing misinformation and protecting privacy, these systems can safely guide students through their inner development journey.Amy discusses the need for a mindfulness AI tutor that integrates contemplative practice with systems thinking, helping students see knowledge as interconnected rather than compartmentalized. By connecting well-being and self regulation concepts across neuroscience, psychology, physics, and ethics, AI can help students discover meaningful relationships with our world as a whole and enable students to feel their spheres of interest grow. There are valid concerns about digital overuse, however thoughtfully designed educational AI offers something fundamentally different—tools that address each student's needs while building community.Join Amy on this journey into the possibilities of conscious technology. During today's podcast, Diana talks to us about what compassion is and why it's challenging to practice. We discuss the brain's negativity bias and how our brains are more conditioned to focus on what's wrong and what's not working. Diana shares that the practice of self-compassion helps us connect to our innate goodness to realize we are OK, even with our failings. Diana also discusses how we can model compassion in our families and she inspires us to bring more compassion to the world, especially now. Diana Winston is the Director of Mindfulness Education at UCLA's Mindful Awareness Research Center (MARC) and the author of several mindfulness books. In this interview, we talk about the importance of forgiveness in our lives and why carrying our anger or resentment around with us is like carrying hot coal. Dropping the hot coal can lead us to more freedom, openness, and joy. It doesn't mean we have to condone or forget, but it is truly an act of self-compassion. It's simply good for us and the practices she teaches can be really powerful. The first step, she says, is to have the willingness to even start working on forgiveness — whether it's forgiving another person for hurting you, asking another person to forgive you, or, also extremely important, forgiving yourself. None of this is easy…but it can make a big difference in our own health and ease. Letting go of these difficult feelings is a great way to begin a new year filled with more open, positive, and productive energy.

She talks to Tami Simon about the various ways we can access and experience awareness, from narrow and focused to effortless and spacious—states we are constantly moving between. They touch on ways to deepen and explore awareness through “glimpse practices” and discuss how we can work toward making natural awareness our default state. Finally, Diana explains why tapping into the full range of awareness can act as a good antidote for those feeling stuck or restless in their meditation practice.

When the reality of the pandemic started setting in last year, the LA County Department of Mental Health announced a partnership with the meditation app Headspace - anyone living in the County could get a free subscription. Regardless of whether you took advantage of that, it does seem like more folks are turning to meditation and mindfulness practice in the stress of the last year. And that also means more tech platforms entering the space. As reported by the L.A. Times, wellness is now a part of the streaming wars, with Netflix partnering with Headspace for a three part program this year, as a counter to HBO Max’s “A World of Calm” series. We sit down with Diana Winston of UCLA to discuss the recent trends in mindfulness, the impact of tech as an avenue into meditation and the benefits of the practice. Plus, if you’ve started meditating because of pandemic-related stress or have questions about how to get started, we want to hear from you via 866-893-5722. Her work has been mentioned in the New York Times, O Magazine, Los Angeles Times, Allure, Women's Health, among others. The LA Times calls her one of the nation's best-known teachers of mindfulness.” A former Buddhist nun, you can find her on the UCLA Mindful, Waking Up and Ten Percent Happier apps or at www.marc.ucla.edu and www.dianawinston.com In this episode Diana gives us an Introduction to classical mindfulness, and how we train our attention to stay on one object in the present moment, but mindfulness isn't just that. There is a whole territory of mindfulness teachings, that teach about something more expansive and spacious. Diana Winston calls this “natural awareness” and it is like classical mindfulness is like the lens of our awareness and attention very narrowly focused, whereas natural awareness is like opening that camera-lens of our awareness wide open. Diana also tells us about her experience as a nun in Burma, and how she totally crashed after a while, feeling so frustrated with her meditation practice, and how that is when she discovered the teachings and practices of natural awareness where the gist of it is that there is nothing to get, nowhere to go, there is no goal, it is all about the awareness that is already existent. The awareness that is already present inside of us, and how we can open up and get access to that natural awareness and experience a shift in our being, in how we experience ourselves ant the world around us in that moment Interestingly Diana shares, that it tended to be the westerners at the Burmese monastery that got frustrated in their meditation practice, perhaps because we are so goal-driven and have a tendency to over-effort - which is not beneficial when you are meditating. We also talk about this frase from her book: “I wanted to reach enlightenment so badly because I didn't want to be me!” Ad about how that really was rooted in a sense of unworthiness, and how inherent in the natural awareness teachings is a notion, that we inherently are filled with natural goodness. And she also talks about her practices with loving kindness and different compassion practices She also dives into what awareness actually is and from there she goes into explain the spectrum of awareness: focused awareness, investigative awareness, choiceless awareness and natural awareness She explains to us that there is no hierarchical relation between natural awareness and classical mindfulness - but that each of them is called for in different situations We speak about Our modern lives of speed and distraction - why do we want so badly to distract ourselves from ourselves? Mindfulness brings us face to face with ourselves Diana says: Meditation is like a doing in the service of being. And of course in this regard se speak about neuro plasticity. And she explains to us how awareness is capable of holding anything and healing anything. How awareness doesn't judge, awareness is infused with a compassionate holding. The willingness to sit with ourselves without exiling any part of us, but bringing compassion to the wholeness of who we are - also our traumas. How awareness can provide us with that safety. She speaks about Enlisting the wisdom mind And of course Diana leads us trough a glimpse practice! My website: www.duritaholm.com

Imagine an entire school pausing, turning inward, and dedicating several unbroken minutes to mindfulness guided by a prompt overlaid with classical music. Imagine each student, teacher, and school staff member beginning the day with this experience. You can almost feel the collective exhale and see the clear minds emerging from each musical moment. This is exactly what happens in classrooms and schools that partner with Mindful Music Moments, a program that brings mindfulness practice to K-12 students in partnership with world-class performing arts organizations. In the second episode of our Mindfulness Education miniseries, Mindful Music Moments creator Stacy Sims explains just what makes this program so powerful, and how educators can begin to practice some of the most effective aspects of mindfulness right now. If you ask health experts, schools leaders, and even students about the biggest problem students face today, you'll get the same answer: anxiety. Student anxiety levels have risen steadily over the last seven years, with recent national data suggesting that one-third of students will experience an anxiety disorder. Students themselves recognize the massive problem that anxiety presents. A 2019 Pew Research Center study found that 70% of teens surveyed felt anxiety and depression was the number one issue they faced, with another 26% indicating it was a minor problem. The underlying causes of the rising trend are complex, and many fall outside the influence of schools. But there are significant and relatively simple strides that schools can take to reduce the anxiety students experience in school. One of the most effective is the intentional integration of mindfulness. In this week's episode, Lou Redmond, founder of One Mindful Education explains that mindfulness is about so much more than "just calming down", and shares a powerful framework that educators can use in classrooms, school-wide, and even personal practice. And because mindfulness can't really be understood outside of experience, Lou walks us through some simple exercises to get us started. In episode #12 of the Mindful Life Podcast I talk about my Kids Mindfulness program. A relatively new program that I introduced to my suite of services in mid 2018. Kids Mindfulness is a mental health program that I designed and implemented within my local community for children aged 8-12yrs. It is a combination of Meditation and Mindfulness Education from a Buddhist perspective with its aim to teach children how to self regulate their emotions, self soothe and self manage stress. Kids Mindfulness is therapeutic in nature and it is designed to address difficulties, but the best bit is, the kids actually enjoy it. Its fun and its an opportunity to make new friends. It’s a time for kids to relax, be still, unwind. A time for kids to let go and just be….. Melanie always wanted to be a doctor. She was going down that path, studying for hours and focusing all her energy on getting into that profession. But as life often does, she was thrown a few curve balls and her plans changed, setting her on a different path. And she's thankful it did. She had been volunteering and doing placements in hospitals, and what really struck her was how stressed out and exhausted everyone was. Even though she knew this, she was seeing the results first hand and it triggered something inside her. From there, an interest in mindfulness, meditation and figuring out how the brain connects to happiness and healthy living began to take shape. She wanted to know how to help others live their best lives and stay mindful in a world that is often extremely chaotic. Realizing that no one is perfect, she works at creating experiences that are welcoming to everyone - whether you've meditated before or not. As she focuses on completing schooling in a psychology based program, she gives talks to school kids, hospital practitioners and host meditative workshops at yoga studios. The desire to bring mindfulness education to the forefront of our everyday lives is what keeps her motivated.
