Being "authentic" has become a real buzz word, but what does living and working authentically look like for you? While we hear a lot about being authentic I'm curious as to how can we move from talking to taking action and show up as our true selves, breaking free from external expectations. Joining me in this conversation is Esme Filsinger, business and self-belief coach who is helping her clients get connected to their purpose and understand their true desires overcoming expectations of what we "should" be doing in life or work. In this episode, Esme raises many intriguing questions to help us dive into our values, our desired impact and how to uncover what we really want outside of what might be expected of us. When you factor in that women are more likely to take time off work to care for their family and have a more cautious attitude to investing money, as well as the gender pay gap, it's easy to see how this chasm is created. Although it wasn't a career path he imagined for himself reflecting on this now, he can see all junctures that lead him there based on his passions and values. If you're thinking about making a career change and aren't sure where to start or how to take the expertise you have and apply them to a new role or industry, then this is the episode for you! 6. How to rise at work

Anyone can live life on their own terms, not just freelancers and those who are self-employed. Being your own boss is a mindset and a conscious decision, not always a title you can put on a resume. We often underestimate how much the freedom we have within our roles in an organisation, whether that's bringing our personalities to work or finding ways in which we can grow in a job. The idea that innovation can only happen outside of traditional roles is shifting. This conversation with Alice Olins, Founder of the Step Up Club, highlighted this notion and had so many tangible takeaways for me. Another that sticks out is being an “intrapreneur”. Intrapreneurs take the innovative thinking of an entrepreneur, challenging ideas and looking for opportunities, but within an organisation. As Alice says so beautifully throughout this episode, we put a lot of pressure on our jobs and they become a measure for how happy we are in our lives, but our needs and wants evolve over our careers. By understanding what our own version of success looks like we can stop comparing ourselves to others and do more of what makes us happy. This week I sat down with Roshni Mahtani, a modern day rebel in every sense of the word. Roshni's a captivating storyteller and is an expert in quite a few different fields. After 9 years of studying architecture, Roshni began to question whether she wanted to continue down her current career path or if she would be more fulfilled by applying her creative and analytical skills within other industries. After much analytical thinking and careful planning, she took some time off to change fields, retrain, and relocate. I really admire Roshni's analytical approach to changing her career trajectory; her shift was calculated, strategic, and ultimately felt more like an appropriate next step rather than a big career leap. If you're currently considering a change of direction with your career or other elements in your life, this episode may provide takeaways for building a framework around thinking about job transitions and guidance on figuring out when the time is right. As Roshni says in the episode, nothing you do is a waste of time, especially if you can focus on experimenting and learning rather than succeeding. Roshni recently started a new role as a UI/UX Designer at New Day. Her first day was actually as lockdown began in the UK, so I was interested to hear how working remotely has impacted her experience of starting a new job.   Book recommendation: The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin Roshni Mahtani: Website: www.roshnimahtani.com LinkedIn: Roshni Mahtani   Stay Connected: Instagram: @juliafranckh YouTube: Julia Franckh Instagram: @moderndayrebels Website: www.moderndayrebels.com   Sign-up to the bi-weekly newsletter filled with digestible content, actionable exercises, and my favorite resources to help you create the life you want to live here: http://eepurl.com/g6lokv

This week I have the absolute pleasure of speaking with Sarah Curtis, founder of Move Your Mind and one of the co-founders of 10Ironwomen, a group of 10 inspiring women who undertook the Barcelona Ironman in 2019. Sarah integrates her active lifestyle to all aspects of her world including her work as a counselor & psychotherapist. Taking her sessions out of her practice in Shoreditch she is able to offer running and walking sessions to those who feel more comfortable out in nature. Sport has always been a part of Sarah's life but she hasn't always been a lover of running. It was through joining running groups in London that she found a supportive community of runners and motivational women which saw them take on the challenge of running from LA to Vegas and later the unthinkable challenge of an Ironman. I was really eager to understand the decision process Sarah went through when she agreed to take on these challenges and if she was daunted by the size of the task, but as she explains the hardest part of these physical or mental challenges is saying yes in the first place. From there she fully commits and goes for it. Pushing yourself physically or mentally really is just one decision away. Since completing the Ironman Sarah and 10Ironwomen have become a movement with a mission to see a 50/50 gender split at Ironman events, so if you're even slightly considering it Sarah will get you inspired to take on the challenge. Marcus Eldh is a true free spirit. We join him in his element walking in the forest in Sweden surrounded by the sound of birds transporting you there with him. Having completed his studies in computer science Marcus was clear on what he didn't want from a job. He knew he didn't want to work at a desk waiting for his holidays to get outside and have some fun. The freedom of being in nature needed to come first, and work to follow. Overhearing two tourists ask where they could see wild moose sparked an idea that maybe he could take visitors to see wildlife in Sweden allowing him to spend his days outside. From winging it on that first tour to now welcoming nature loving travellers from all over the world Marcus is still checking in with that list of what he doesn't want and pivots his work to ensure it captures all he loves and delegates the work that doesn't. Marcus has built a fulfilling career immersing humans with nature and showing them that we are all connected to the natural world. As he says ‘you are as much a mammal as a moose' so while we may think we need to reconnect with nature Marcus explains we are all apart of nature, a lovely reminder that we can all become a little bit wilder. Joining me this week is Alice Benham, digital marketing coach, podcast and retreat host, and absolute power house. Actively shaping the life and career she wants Alice has a mission to make the business world more honest, focused and an intentional space leading by example. Having left school at 17 to follow a desire to be “doing”, Alice launched into the world of work and gave it everything. Sacrificing friendships and her health lead to burnt out and while from the outside things looked shiny she knew that she needed to build a business that worked not only for clients, but served her as well. Bouncing back Alice shares the process she went through to define a clear purpose for herself. From trying on everyone else's approach for size to building a business on her terms and continuously evolving what success means to her. Through trusting her instinct she's paving the way for others to create sustainable & value-driven businesses. In the very first episode of Modern Day Rebels I am joined by the amazing Aiden Carroll, founder of The Coloring In Department and digital education wizard. Aiden was practically born a rebel, raised on lateral thinking, and grew into a maverick not afraid to get in over his head. An early experience saw Aiden's career trajectory change after being challenged on his belt choice one day, and he knew at that moment he wasn't made to toe the line. Through fearless career experimentation, he's carved out a unique path that saw him leading the social media campaign for Team GB during the 2012 Olympics and heading up a global project at Google. The desire for freedom and flexibility has always been imperative to Aiden, so in launching The Coloring In Department he has curated his working world to be, happy, healthy, and unshakeably honest. Hello and welcome to the Modern Day Rebels podcast, the podcast that tells the stories of pioneers who actively create the lives they want to live. I'm Julia Franckh, and I am fascinated by the question of how we can live both better and more meaningful lives. Each week I will sit down with a modern day rebel from a range of different personal backgrounds and industries, to chat about how they actively shape the life they want to live, one step at a time. We will talk about why they decided to live life differently, how they managed to do so in the first place, and what they do now to sustain, maintain, and continuously transform their every day lives. I learn something new through each and every one of their stories which continuously motivate me to keep building the life I want to live. I hope it will do the same for you. The first episode goes live Monday May 11th, so subscribe wherever you listen to your podcasts, and I can't wait to have you listen in on all the amazing conversations I have lined up for season 1.   Stay Connected: Instagram: @juliafranckh YouTube: Julia Franckh Instagram: @moderndayrebels Website: www.moderndayrebels.com   Sign-up to the bi-weekly newsletter filled with digestible content, actionable exercises, and my favorite resources to help you create the life you want to live here: http://eepurl.com/g6lokv
