In our engaging interview, Rachel talks about her hilarious new [picture book, How to Pee Your Pants: The Right Way (published by Feiwel & Friends, October 15, 2024) and the embarrassing real first-grade event which prompted her to write it (According to Rachel, it was 'directed by my little kid self').  Rachel grew up in Utah in a book-loving family, and talked about her dream trips to the Draper Library in the mountains, where they would pile the car full of books. WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE turned into a 'book of revelation' and helped chart out her storytelling journey, giving her permission to 'pee her pants and still be loved and appreciated.' In high school, she discovered writing (a poem a day) and loved art, but connected them only when she began to write children's stories. Rachel found her agent, Lindsay Auld, through the slush pile (!) and now has multiple book deals, including a ghost book coming out this summer. Rachel likes to vary her text between simplicity and complexity, adding layers to the story, and drawing humorous elements in the artwork (i.e., tooth braces on the giraffe). Rachel's mantra is "Follow the Fun." A great recipe for us all. Learn more about your ad choices. Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - There was a familiar face behind the Wild Things Seafood booth at Manson's Friday Market last week. In addition to being our former Regional Director, Noba Anderson's family has a connection to Cortes Island that stretches back to 1978. So Cortes Currents asked Noba about the new business she is undertaking with Peter Schmidt. “It's Peter's passion, there's no doubt about that. Peter owned his first fishing boat when he was a teenager off Saturna Island and has been fishing on and off with his own boat in younger years, and then on other people's boats more recently. So last year he was out on a tuna boat and took his payment in fish rather than money and had it processed. You can't just sell tuna, so then he bought some other things and went on the road last winter,” she explained.   “Then I started  getting a few things from his supplier and went to Denman and Hornby islands last winter, just once a month kind of thing.  We teamed up more considerably this spring and summer season.” Cortes Currents: How did you come up with a name for your enterprise? Noba Anderson: “Wild Things Seafood? -  Peter came up with it. It speaks to the fact we only carry wild products, only BC products and that great old book ‘Where The Wild Things Are,' just a little bit of play.”   “We set up in the Comox Valley for May and June, but we either didn't do enough marketing or whatever. It didn't really pan out as fast as we needed it to.” “So we pivoted and we've been  selling on six Gulf Islands every week all summer. Hornby,  Denman, Gabriola, Salt Spring, Pender and Maine, and then the odd little place in between and then having one day to  recharge and regroup and restock. So we direct source as cash flow and storage allows.” Cortes Currents: So you sleep on the road? Noba Anderson: “When we're on the road, we sleep in the fish truck.  We carry four big freezers full of product, generators, and rope to the front bumper. It's a traveling fun show a la Pete for sure.”

Maurice Sendak is often celebrated for his contributions to children's book art. You're likely familiar with Where The Wild Things Are, or even Higglety Pigglety Pop. But in the late artist's own words, "I do not believe that I have ever written a children's book. I do not know how to write a children's book. How do you set out to write a children's book?" This hour, we're exploring the Maurice Sendak Foundation in Ridgefield, where Sendak lived for forty years. There, the many layers of his artistic legacy live on, with the help of the experts and friends who knew and loved him best. We hear from them. Gio was disappointed to read that it was not about Combs' brother, just some random guy.  Hour 2 We come out of break with ‘Out Where The Wild Things Are' by Luke Combs, the song that Gio thinks he got duped listening to. We turned our attention to the Knicks and Julius Randle and surgery still being on the table. They beat the Sixers in Philadelphia and Spike Eskin was there ringing the Sixers Liberty Bell. C-Lo returns for an update but first Gio said this has been a slow week, probably because the kids are home. Spike was at the Sixers game ringing the Liberty Bell and then the Knicks beat them. Hal Steinbrenner talked about still looking to improve the team but nothing is imminent. Gio said, on paper, this is the worst Mets rotation. A caller said Evan Roberts claims to have never BBQ'd.  Hour 3 A couple at the Mavericks game called Kevin Durant a ‘bitch' when he came out of the locker room for shootaround. He approached them and was nice enough to tell security not to throw them out. The loser guy said, ‘I have a podcast'. C-Lo returns for an update, but first Fat Perez called in while traveling in Virginia. In the final segment of the hour, C-Lo gets to actually do his update and starts with the Knicks win in Philly last night. Kodai Senga is going to miss the start of the season, and Jerry wonders why the Mets wouldn't sign a guy like Jordan Montgomery. Tiger Woods' son did not do great at his qualifying event, but he was being followed and he really needed more security at the event for him.  Hour 4 We talked about the Mets season and the first series which is at home against the Brewers, in what Gio is calling a ‘David Stearns revenge spot'. Gio wonders if fans will want to go to that Brewers series if it's cold, as it surely will be. A caller compares Steve Cohen to a ‘two pump chump'. A caller said Evan Roberts has made it by having his in-laws live with him. He has a chef and a constant hall pass to go to games. C-Lo is here for his final update of the day and starts with talk of Blake Snell and the Yankees. The Moment of The Day involves the terrible new MLB uniforms where you can see the players' junk. In the final segment of the week, Peter Schwartz has a ‘long snapping son' and is going to do his college commitment live on our show next week.

“No Warning Shots Fired” Fang got their start in the early '80s in the East Bay. The Berkeley hardcore band's early start was a little less hardcore and more experimental but that lineup, which featured future Glass Eye bassist Brian Beattie, only lasted under two years. The new lineup, with newly minted singer Sam McBride on vocals, became the punk rock powerhouse that blasted their way across the Bay Area with shows that were feral, wild and filled with rabid intensity and hardcore muscle. But feral as they were, Fang's fans felt a part of a discernible community. As a friend of mine who never missed a Fang show once said to me: "Being at Fang concert was like being at a fistfight where everyone's winning.” The band's first two efforts—Landshark and Where The Wild Things Are—remain undisputed punk rock classics and although that lineup dissolved in '85, McBride soldiered on with new personnel and as a result, Fangs' legacy became firmly cemented in punk rock lore, with their songs being covered over the years by Nirvana, Green Day and the Butthole Surfers. Fang pretty much tore through the ‘80s on a pretty big winning streak, and although that streak came to an end when McBride ended up in prison, the band's second act is a feral as their first and their new album No Warning Shot Fired is a raw and nervy blast of classic hardcore. www.fangofficialmerch.bigcartel.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenonline.com www.emberarts.com Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
