Doing It Right with LeadershipIn the second part of her “Doing It Right” series on the Home Care Heroes and Day Service Stars podcast, industry veteran Ginny Kenyon returns to talk about leadership — not as a title, but as a responsibility. Ginny, who Ken Accardi describes as worthy of the “Home Care Hall of Fame,” shares her hard-earned wisdom on what it truly means to lead a successful and compassionate home care organization.Ginny begins by drawing a sharp contrast between being a "boss" and being a true leader. A boss, she says, issues orders and expects obedience. A leader, on the other hand, embraces their role as the “chief responsible person.” Leaders serve their teams by ensuring that staff have both the tools and the knowledge they need to succeed. Leadership is not about power; it's about service. The Podcast covers:Your Most Important Customer: Your Teamemployees are your most important customer.empower your team, and they will grow your business. From $1.2M to $5.3M: How Listening Fueled Explosive GrowthThese practices built loyalty, reduced conflict, and created a culture where staff felt seen, valued, and empowered.Serving Referral Sources Like VIPsrecognize referral partners as key customers Your Competition is Not Your Enemytreat your competitors as colleagues. What Makes a Great Leader in Home CareIn Ginny's view, leadership in home care is not about hierarchy. It's about ownership, empathy, and service. Leaders must:Listen to staff and act on their inputEquip employees with tools and knowledgeRecognize achievements in meaningful waysBuild strong relationships with referral partnersCollaborate with peers, even competitorsWhen you take care of the people who do the work — your caregivers, office staff, and partners — they take care of your clients. And when that happens, your business will thrive.Home Care Heroes and Day Service Stars is produced and sponsored by Ankota - If you provide services that enable older or disabled people to continue living at home , Ankota can provide you the software to successfully run your agency. Positive Pregnancy, Childbirth and Motherhood

The Perfect Birth Lie: What No One Tells You About "Doing It Right"In this raw and real episode, I unpack one of the most insidious pressures in modern birth culture: the idea that there's a perfect way to give birth. Whether you're dreaming of a calm water birth or just hoping to avoid unnecessary intervention, the pressure to get it "right" can quietly chip away at your confidence.I explore how the perfect birth narrative actually hurts women, why it's okay to change your mind, and how to build real confidence—not performative calm.Whether you're preparing for your first baby or healing after a birth that didn't go to plan, this chat is a must-listen for anyone who wants an empowering, grounded and judgment-free approach to birth.

Maggie is back from her holiday so let's get into it.  Justin Timberlake was arrested last week and made Jas realise media literacy is DEAD.  Next, Jas is being served 'No Sugar' videos on her TikTok. Is she alone in this or is it the next iteration of diet culture disguised as wellness?  Pop music is dominating 2024 but not everyone agrees. We discuss two pieces with differing opinions. One is for British GQ titled How Pop Music Got Its Personality Back by Daisy Jones. The latter is for the Wall Street Journal and is titled Why Pop Music Is So ‘Meh' Right Now by Neil Shah. We also reference an ep from Pandora Sykes' podcast Doing It Right titled How Tech Flattened Personal Taste, With Kyle Chayka.  Charli XCX and Taylor Swift battled it out for the UK's number one album last week. We share our thoughts on whether this was intentional and reference this TikTok by pop culture journalist Eilish Gilligan and another by Zee Feed's Crystal Jane.  In recommendations, Jas loved this debut novel while Maggie watched an animated film.  Love you! When you think of skills that are important to list in your CV or resume, you probably think of hard skills.  That is, quantifiable or measurable accomplishments. Hard skills are important when it comes to tasks where we do not rely on others. But in team environments and as leaders, soft skills may even prove more important. You can do all the budgeting you want or data analysis, but if you do not have the communication skills to relay that information so others can understand and accept it, then it becomes almost pointless. In this episode I share why soft skills are so powerful and the importance on focusing on them if you are going to succeed as a leader. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are problems that require long term work in order to provide long term impact. So, why do companies keep seeking "quick fixes" and flashy solutions that just won't work? To understand the issues the industry is facing in DEI, and the hard work needed to change organizations, we've invited Lily Zheng to join us. Lily is a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion speaker, strategist, and organizational consultant. Recently, they wrote DEI Deconstructed: Your No-Nonsense Guide to Doing the Work and Doing It Right, a definitive foundational text for critically analyzing and applying actionable DEI techniques and strategies. DEI is an ongoing issue for most organizations, so it's baffling to think of it as a subject that ebbs and flows with trends. Lily explains why this continues to happen, and the dangers it poses to the long term success of DEI in the workplace. We learn that there are no short term fixes or hacks to solving the problem. It's going to take hard data and hard work to concretely change the way people think and act. Lily further shares how they help companies assess their workforce and understand what is going on beneath the surface. By collecting data on employee engagement, retention, promotion rates, and access to opportunity, Lily is able to get a clear picture of the problems the company is facing and provide solutions that change culture in a lasting manner. With so few best-practices and many underdeveloped strategies out there, Lily took it upon themselves to literally write the book on DEI. Today, they share how they hope the book can teach companies to hold themselves accountable, and also provide a critical resource for budding practitioners in the industry. Three Key Takeaways: * Complex problems such as DEI don't have quick fixes. It's the nature of the beast. * Thought leadership is a way to up-skill your audience, allowing those who work with you to "skip the baby steps" and spend more time on the hard stuff. * Data has to be the core of problem solving. You can't provide a solution, when you don't understand the problem.

In the past couple of years, the term "DEI" has started popping up *a lot* online, to the point where Googling just those three letters turns up hundreds of hits! However, you would not be alone in admitting that you maybe don't exactly know what DEI...like...is. Fortunately, Lily Zheng (author of the recently-published "DEI Deconstructed: Your No-Nonsense Guide to Doing the Work and Doing It Right") is here to explain everything; not only in layperson's terms, but from a queer perspective! In an incredibly wide-reaching conversation, Lily (they/them) explains how both the acronym "LGBT" and the phrase "people of color" originated as solidarity terms, and demolishes the maddening argument that "it's actually *harder* to be a straight white man right now..." (complete with factual data you can share with all the butthurt people in your life!). Plus, Lauren tells a story that demonstrates why you should NEVER host a tequila drinking contest in your college apartment!Check out https://lilyzheng.co/home/ for more info on Lily (including links to all of their books!), and connect with them on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/lilyzheng308/.

Key Takeaways:[3:13] Jennifer discusses finding her voice in the workplace equality movement as a professional, a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and someone who recognizes their privilege.[5:25] Jennifer talks about carrying the LGBTQ identity as a source of challenge, and using it as a vehicle to transform her own leadership.[12:22] When getting leaders and insiders to enact lasting change, we need to focus on DEI efforts on the moral case, just as much, if not more than, the business case.[15:43] If you are an insider, you can push on other insiders to lead differently.[17:40] Up to 75% of change management efforts fail, especially the top-down-led ones.[21:01] We can find core issues that we can focus on, which will then create ripples of change. One example of this can be toxic masculinity.[33:01] We should recognize that the differences between us are ones we should face and name, rather than sweep them under the rug.[38:11] The journey of understanding others is challenging and may reveal things about ourselves that we never expected. It's important to be patient, humble, and transparent about our experience. Humans don't learn by shaming one another.[1:01:28] Leaning on others within your community is super important, and Jennifer talks about the profoundness of an ally showing up to help speak for someone who can't.[1:09:49] Jennifer's challenge: get comfortable with being uncomfortable.[1:10:44] DEI is a laboratory for human evolution, and it challenges us at the deepest level in the not knowing.Mentioned:Jennifer BrownHow to Be an Inclusive LeaderDEI Deconstructed: Your No-Nonsense Guide to Doing the Work and Doing It Right, by Lily Zhengbell hooks

Lily Zheng: The Three Reasons DEI Efforts Fail – Fatigue, Backlash and Denial

Joining us on today's episode is Lily Zheng author of DEI Deconstructed and a sought-after diversity, equity, and inclusion speaker, strategist, and organizational consultant who specializes in hands-on systemic change to turn positive DEI intentions into positive DEI outcomes for workplaces and everyone in them. Why do DEI efforts fail, is a question asked by many leaders. Why is it that companies claim to be invested in advancing DEI, launching one initiative after another, yet research finds at any one point in time roughly 50% of us feel isolated, excluded, devalued and disengaged at work? There are three reasons why DEI efforts fail, these include fatigue, backlash and denial. When DEI efforts, don't address the root cause of inequality people become tired with all the lip service. This fatigue leads to backlash as people resist effort and initiatives that aim to address discrimination and inequality at work. And when resistance isn't enough, people may resort to denying that inequality exists at all, examples of this include managers simply not believing inequality is a problem in their workplace. Lily explains that it's not that people are tired of doing DEI work, it's that they're tired of doing DEI work that doesn't achieve anything. To address that kind of fatigue we need to be rethinking all of our in initiatives, potentially even doing less, but making sure that we can directly tie every single thing we're doing into the outcomes we're trying to create. Fatigue backlash and denial create the DEI death spiral because it leaves people feeling powerless to affect change. There is nothing I can do to change my workplace, but this simply isn't true Lily gives us these actions to take away. Action One: Get to know the difference between the types of power; formal, reward, coercive and expert power.  Know that everyone within an organization has power, you just have to know how to use it. Action Two: Be strategic in how you use your power and think of your connections within an organization to use your unique power as a tool to make change.  Back this up with expert ideas to aid change to take place. Action Three: Organizing is really powerful. You can organize as part of an employee resource group. You can organize as part of a DEI council or committee, you can organize to encourage and highlight the workforces strengths. All of these are really powerful.   Manifestations of collective power, collective organizing, collective advocacy. They're all tools that all employees have at their disposal to make change within workplaces   Lily Zheng Dei Deconstructed: Your No-Nonsense Guide to Doing the Work and Doing It Right

In a way, we're all managing our personal brand in the infosphere aren't we? But Nathan Allebach, in a far more tangible way, really does manage brands - not just his own, but also for companies. And in managing the Steak-Umm brand on twitter, he drew attention by being one of the first to adopt a personal, authentic, and informative style - covering topics far beyond the world of frozen processed steak. Far from providing the typical zero-calorie bland corporate platitudes, Nathan quickly drew attention by delivering substantial threads on weighty topics like conspiracism and online disinformation. He played a delicate game of being edgy without being snarky or combative, providing informative and positive intellectual fare, nourishing both the hearts and minds of twitter users everywhere. As a hardened and savvy longtime twitter user, he's got a good understanding of the weirdness of Being Online, and the various ways to do so. Hello! This week I spoke to the author, podcaster and journalist Pandora Sykes.  I was thrilled to interview Pandora all about the flattened female identity of motherhood; how we generalise, lump together and dismiss mothers into one homogenous group and how that impacts everyone either thinking about having a baby or who has become a parent.  Pandora's book, How Do We Know That We're Doing It Right is already a bestseller and will be out in paperback in May 2021. As well as being an author and journalist, Pandora was the co-host of the phenomenal podcast The High Low, presents podcast The Missing and has her own podcast, Doing It Right. You can follow her at @PINsykes [https://twitter.com/PINsykes] on Twitter and @pandorasykes [https://www.instagram.com/pandorasykes/?hl=en] on Instagram. I was also lucky to talk to Sarah McCullen, Director of Impact and Engagement and the National Childbirth Trust. Sarah and I discussed post-natal mental health, identity and what we can do to hold on to our sense of who we are, while growing another person. We're back, it's January and that means one thing, it's time to set some goals. But after what can only be described as the craziest of years we're taking a slightly different approach in 2021. This year they're all more holistic, they're focused on more than just hitting a certain number in the gym or reading an arbitrary number of books, instead we've looked back on the past year and thought hard about not just what we want to achieve but also how we want to do it. Welcome to the season finale of Modern Day Rebels, I can hardly believe that 12 weeks have passed since launching this podcast. With so many brilliant and insightful guests, I've loved exploring how we can live better and more meaningful lives. Like many of my guests I have taken a more unconventional career path myself. Having initially studied both cognitive science and psychology, I found a love for the tech sector, specifically user experience design, which provided a perfect intersection of psychology and design to solve problems. In this episode I want to give you more background on Modern Day Rebels as a whole, and take a deeper dive into three of the key themes that kept coming up in conversation with my guests, understanding the importance they play in living life on their own terms. While I have to admit I feel a lot more comfortable asking other people questions than talking about myself it's been fascinating to look back at this season as a whole and I can't wait to bring you more stories of Modern Day Rebels in September. Today we chat with Emilie Beecroft. Emilie is a postpartum doula, lactation consultant assistant and mom to two. Her children are 4 ½ and 2 1/2 . We chat about how Emilie decided to pursue becoming a postpartum doula, what a postpartum doula does and why a new mom might want to hire one and about some really helpful resources for new moms, both locally in our Sacramento area and more generally. When the weather gets nice again, Em will be hosting her monthly postpartum in the park moms groups here in Sacramento. You can follow her facebook page for more updates. She also hosts new moms groups at Java Mama here in Folsom twice per month on the first and third Tuesday. My favorite part of the interview was what she would tell a new mom – “You're Doing It Right.”   Enjoy the show! You can find Emilie's website here. Follow her on Facebook here.  Emilie is also a member of the Capital City Doula collective.
