“The average knowledge worker is interrupted every two minutes during work hours,” according to Microsoft Chief Marketing Officer Jared Spataro. “You're getting an email, a meeting kind of request, a chat coming in, and if you do the math, that's 275 times a day.” On this episode of Tech Disruptors, Spataro joins Bloomberg Intelligence Senior Technology Analyst Anurag Rana to discuss emerging trends in the way employees work and how AI is already changing the game. The two define the “Frontier Firm” and discuss why this is a big year for such organizations. They also talk about the introduction of new research and analyst AI agents and the future of head count and staffing needs.
At the end of last year, I ran into a friend I hadn't seen in a long time. We were chatting and this person mentioned that they were looking for a new job. They had been laid off and needed something. This is someone with a lot of experience and skill, so I wasn't worried for their career or future. At the time, they mentioned they had gotten an introduction and interest from Amazon, but they weren't interested in a position because of the return-to-the-office (RTO) mandate that Amazon was implementing. I was recently chatting with another friend at a different company. This person manages a tech team, and was looking to hire another data engineer, but was told they could only hire in a certain city (City A) in the US. In this case, it was the city with their main office. They have offices in a few cities, and a large one in City B, but the organization has been thinking of their own RTO plans and has limited hiring. My friend is now wondering if they need to consider moving to City A (not likely) or find a new job. They don't want to have to go to the office every day in City B. Episode Title: Feeling Stuck at Work? [It Might Be Time for a Change!] Host: Robyn Engelson Guest: Kelly Rossi Episode Summary: In this episode, we sit down with Kelly Rossi to explore her incredible career journey—starting in affiliate marketing, transitioning into corporate America, and ultimately returning to her entrepreneurial roots in small business. Kelly shares the pivotal moments that shaped her path, from navigating the economic downturn in 2008 to working in the online lending industry, and eventually joining TransUnion after her company was acquired. She also opens up about the life-changing impact of meeting keynote speaker Lindsay Shook, how that connection led her to co-create a boutique female speakers bureau, and why she's passionate about supporting women in business. Now, having recently transitioned back to the small business world, Kelly describes the experience as refreshing—a place where her ideas are not only heard but also implemented. She shares the stark contrast between corporate life and entrepreneurship and why she believes some people are built for one over the other. You'll learn: How Kelly entered affiliate marketing during the 2008 economic downturn The transition from small business to corporate America and what she learned The unexpected challenges of working in a corporate structure vs. small business The importance of an environment that values creativity and innovation How a keynote speaker changed her career trajectory The creation of a boutique female speakers bureau The joy of returning to small business, where ideas are heard and acted upon Memorable Quotes: "I never in a million years thought I'd be in corporate America—and I don't think I'll ever go back." "Small businesses thrive on big ideas, but in corporate America, you have to learn to play the game." "Being in a place where my ideas are not just heard but implemented—it's refreshing!" Resources & Mentions: Women Work F***ing Hard (Lindsay Shook's Organization) TransUnion & Corporate Experience Boutique Female Speakers Bureau Actionable Steps for Listeners: Identify Where You're Stuck: Take a moment to evaluate if you're feeling “stuck” in your current work environment, whether it's corporate or entrepreneurial. Acknowledge whether you're going through the motions or if you're passionate about the work you're doing. Consider Change: If you feel uninspired, think about what small changes could make a big impact. Maybe it's speaking up more, suggesting ideas, or even considering a switch to a different work environment, such as a smaller, family-owned business or an entrepreneurial venture. Share Your Ideas: If you have an idea, share it with those around you. It might be with your team, your boss, or a mentor. Be bold and confident about it—you never know when it will be received well and put into action, just like in the story shared in the podcast. Take Action: Once your idea is heard, take action to help implement it. Be proactive in bringing your vision to life, as this can lead to personal growth and new opportunities. Find Your Authenticity: Reflect on whether you feel comfortable being your true self at work. If you're in an environment that allows you to be authentic, embrace it. If not, explore ways to bring more of your true self to what you do. Final Thought: The feeling of being “stuck” is common, but there's always room for change. Whether you're in a corporate setting or a small business, it's crucial to find a place where you can share your ideas, have them valued, and take action. When you're able to be your authentic self and contribute meaningfully, everything feels refreshing. Never underestimate the power of a change in environment or mindset—it can light up your entire career and life. What listeners have to say: “Her energy is fire! Join us in welcoming Esteban Sotomayor to VHMA for this episode, coming on to help us address multiculturalism in the workplace. Esteban is a veterinary business consultant with an extensive background in Latin American veterinary practices, and he sheds some light on some of the differences between the veterinary practices in Latin America and the United States, including the role of veterinary technicians and the unique challenges and opportunities faced by clinic owners in both regions. (For example, the lack of veterinary technicians in Latin America drastically affects how practices operate, requiring veterinarians to take on tasks that would typically be handled by technicians in the U.S.) We also explore how competition among clinics and economic factors influence practice management, particularly in Esteban's home country, Ecuador, but a key takeaway from this episode is the importance of building and managing a strong team. Esteban shares his own approach to recruitment, training, and keeping the right people engaged, even in regions where veterinary talent is in high demand. We discuss how cultural differences shape management styles, especially in Latin American clinics where veterinarians often wear many hats, from diagnosing to managing HR. If you are in the veterinary field yourself and/or are curious about how business practices differ across cultures, then this episode will definitely resonate with you! At the core of effective leadership lies authority - the power to influence, direct, and inspire others towards a common goal. Whether you're leading a team, a company, or simply managing your own life and career, authority is an essential component that cannot be overlooked. It's important to note that leadership styles can vary greatly from person to person. Each leader brings their unique personality, experiences, and approach to their role. However, regardless of individual differences, there are certain universal principles that underpin strong leadership authority.here are some common pitfalls to avoid:1. Prioritizing Likability Over Respect2. Over-Reliance on Consensus3. Reactive Communication4. Lack of DirectnessEffective leaders cultivate the ability to be clear, direct, and respectful in their communication. They provide specific feedback, address issues head-on, and clearly articulate their vision and expectations. This directness, when coupled with empathy and tact, strengthens a leader's authority by demonstrating confidence and clarity of purpose. Jeannette shares valuable insights on creating a positive environment for teams to flourish and thrive. She outlines five key areas essential for fostering a productive workplace culture, including establishing a clear purpose and strategy, defining core values and behaviours, optimising the physical work environment, ensuring the right people are in the right roles, and reflecting on one's leadership style. KEY TAKEAWAYS Establish a crystal clear purpose and strategy for your business. This clarity helps the entire team feel inspired and aligned, making it easier to work towards common goals. Define and communicate the core values and behaviours that shape your business culture. Engage your team in discussions about these values to ensure everyone is on the same page and can embody them in their work. Assess and improve the physical workspace to create a welcoming and conducive environment for creativity and productivity. Consider aspects like breakout areas, wellness facilities, and overall aesthetics to enhance employee morale. Ensure that you have the right people on your team who share the organisation's vision and values. Focus on recruitment, development, and creating a supportive team environment where everyone can thrive. BEST MOMENTS "If you have an absolute crystal clear purpose and reason for being, then actually that's something that the whole team can get excited about." "Creating that right culture is very much around the values, the behaviours, and getting that buy-in from everyone on the team." "We are products of our environment. If the office isn't really very welcoming, you're not providing... wellness aspects, then you're going to struggle to get people back in." "A winning team has each other's backs. A winning team wins together or not at all." This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Sean “Diddy” Combs, the once-celebrated music mogul behind Bad Boy Records, has been accused of creating a "degrading" and "predatory" work environment for the members of his hit girl group Danity Kane, according to former member D. Woods. Speaking on Good Morning America, Woods described a toxic atmosphere where the band members were judged primarily on their sex appeal rather than their talent. “He viewed his artists as ‘pieces of meat,'” said Woods, who joined the group after appearing on Combs' reality TV series Making the Band 3. “In some of the environments, it was even scary to be by yourself.” Woods' allegations come amid mounting legal troubles for Combs, who was arrested in September on suspicion of sex trafficking and racketeering. Prosecutors allege he orchestrated events he called "freak-offs," where women were forced to participate in multi-day sex parties. More than 150 individuals, including men and boys, have accused Combs of sexual assault, resulting in over 30 civil lawsuits. Woods recounted her experiences during an upcoming Investigation Discovery docuseries titled The Fall of Diddy. In the series, she recalls witnessing “inappropriate communications” between Combs and fellow Danity Kane member Aubrey O'Day, who was ultimately fired alongside Woods during Making the Band 4. Woods noted that there was no one to report such behavior to, forcing the group members to rely solely on one another for support. Asked by Good Morning America's Eva Pilgrim if any avenues for reporting existed, Woods replied, “Absolutely not. What were they going to do? It's like, ‘How do we survive this?'” Despite the damning allegations, Combs and his legal team maintain his innocence, calling the accusations “pure fiction.” In a statement to GMA, his lawyers criticized the documentary's producers, claiming they failed to give Combs an adequate opportunity to respond to the allegations. “[Combs] has full confidence in the facts and the judicial process, where truth will prevail,” the statement read. Woods explained her decision to come forward now, stating that she finally feels her story will be heard and taken seriously. She acknowledged fears of retaliation if Combs is acquitted but emphasized that staying silent hasn't changed anything. “Every time I think I should stay quiet, I remind myself that not talking hasn't helped,” she said. Combs is currently being held in Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center. A judge determined he was a flight risk and could potentially intimidate witnesses. His trial is set to begin on May 5, 2025. #SeanCombs #DanityKane #MusicIndustry #SexTrafficking #MakingTheBand #CelebrityTrial #BreakingNews Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
