Liv Little often found herself asked to speak on behalf of all marginalised voices, as the only person of colour in the room… so she decided to build her own room. She founded Gal Dem magazine, a place and community where anyone could talk not just about their trauma, but about their joys and passions. It was the creation of a home that helped and inspired many people over the eight years for which it ran. She then took that search spiritual, emotional home as the theme for her debut novel, Rosewater. Join Liv now for a walk along the kent coast, as she talks about creativity, loss, grounding herself by the sea… and trying to keep her socks dry A Life More Wild is an 18Sixty production, brought to you by Canopy & Stars. The producers for this episode were Gareth Evans and Clarissa Maycock. Sound recording by Marnie Woodmeade. Our theme music is by Billie Marten.

We're talking about the work of young people entering the online 'influencer' economy and journalism today. Moya Lothian-McLean is politic editor for Gal-Dem and a freelance journalist. Hello gorgeous listeners. We're very excited for this week's episode with the truly brilliant Liv Little. Liv is the creator and former editor of gal-dem, a magazine created exclusively by women and nonbinary people of colour. gal-dem is a rare print magazine success story, building a cult audience while simultaneously helping to change up the UK's wildly white media landscape (94% of British journalists are white). Liv, who launched the mag when she was only 21, has been listed as one of the BBC's 100 most influential women in media, as well as a Forbes' 30 under 30. As she announces a major career pivot (she announced she's stepping down as editor and CEO in September) we talk to Liv about the future of print media, how to balance being ‘nice' with being a boss, and how to be a CEO in your early 20s. Happy listening ❤️ Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

When the pandemic hit, gal-dem lost £60k in ad revenue in just a couple of weeks. So it asked the community to support its independent journalism - and 700 new members signed up in just one day
For this episode, I recorded Liv Little, the founder and CEO of gal-dem -an award-winning online and print publication committed to sharing perspectives from women and non-binary people of colour. Here is a scary stat for you - the current journalistic landscape is 94% white and 55% male. What I love so much about gal-dem is that they are actively trying to redress this imbalance through both their editorial and commercial work. And in this interview, I got a real understanding of the magazine and how Liv came to start it at the age of just 21! We chart the different influences in her life from how her mum’s social enterprise work influenced her growing up to going to Bristol Uni and how hard she found it not seeing people like herself with the same background and experiences. It is through this isolating experience that Gal Dem was born – a chance for Liv to carve out her space and create a community. She credits her ambition and sheer determination for making it all possible. She talks about the many skill sets she had to develop quickly to become CEO and the importance of surrounding yourself with experienced mentors that can help you with all the different aspects of your business. It’s not about following in their footsteps but instead have access to a pool of knowledge that can help you make better decisions. There is a huge amount we can all learn from Liv’s amazing story.
Welcome to the season finale of Modern Day Rebels, I can hardly believe that 12 weeks have passed since launching this podcast. With so many brilliant and insightful guests, I've loved exploring how we can live better and more meaningful lives. Like many of my guests I have taken a more unconventional career path myself. Having initially studied both cognitive science and psychology, I found a love for the tech sector, specifically user experience design, which provided a perfect intersection of psychology and design to solve problems. In this episode I want to give you more background on Modern Day Rebels as a whole, and take a deeper dive into three of the key themes that kept coming up in conversation with my guests, understanding the importance they play in living life on their own terms. While I have to admit I feel a lot more comfortable asking other people questions than talking about myself it's been fascinating to look back at this season as a whole and I can't wait to bring you more stories of Modern Day Rebels in September. Recording live from Words Weekend festival, on this special episode we’re joined by Reni Eddo-Lodge, journalist and author of ‘Why I’m No Longer Speaking to White People About Race’, Mariam Khan, editor of anthology ‘It’s Not About the Burqa’ and writer, journalist and critic Anita Sethi. In a joint discussion between all three of our literary guests, we speak about encountering casual racism within friendship groups, the complexities of existing in multiple cultures and the impact that has on our affiliation to britishness, and the common expectation of diasporan eldest daughters to take on mothering roles within their families.Find transcripts and show notes for all of Growing up with gal-dem here. After Alison Roman apologised to Chrissy Teigen and Marie Kondo, we took to Instagram to praise Chrissy for her graceful response. But we showed a blind spot in the process - how quick the world is to downplay the racially charged comments of white women. After an amazing listener called us out, we got her on the phone to talk through this textbook case of white feminism in action - and it came not a moment too soon. As we - and the rest of the world - felt sick to our stomachs about the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, we had already decided to try and wade into the tricky, often uncomfortable topic of race. Why are white people so unwilling to acknowledge their own inherent biases? Why do we think that racism is 'someone else's' problem? And why do we always end up relying on people of colour to explain to us how to dismantle a system that we are responsible for creating? We tackle all these questions, with varying success, in this episode - we'd love to hear your feedback. Thanks to Crystal Andrews for being a guest on this episode. Her first book, 'How To Win Every Argument', is available now. Some things everyone can do: - Change our consumer habits: look at how many books you own which were written by people of colour, who directed and stars in the movies you watch, the magazines you buy, the stories you're engaging in - Look around us and notice when there's no minority groups in the room- Analyse the power you have at work - do you have the power to hire new staff? Is your workplace diverse? If not, why not, and is there anything you have the power to do to change it?- Call out casual racism always - Read about our history and follow (and engage!) with people of colour and minority groups- Look for initiatives that relate to causes you're passionate about and dedicate resources, either money or your time.- Sign petitions and share the news. gal-dem is a UK publication that is actively addressing the way people of colour are portrayed in the media. Founded by Liv Little in 2015, gal-dem’s mission statement is clear: To empower and support young women and non-binary people of colour, to disrupt racist stereotypes, and shine a light on stories and experiences that matter. Two women playing a vital role in doing that are gal-dem journalists Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff and Leah Cowan. In this episode of History Becomes Her, Cowan and Brinkhurst-Cuff discuss their book "I Will Not be Erased": Our Stories about Growing Up as People of Colour and their personal experiences of erasure. They pay tribute to the women they find most inspiring: American political activist Angela Davis and Myrna Simpson, mother of Joy Gardner who died in a botched deportation in 1993. Cowan and Brinkhurst-Cuff explore the forgotten women of the Windrush generation and women's role in Britain's Black Power movement. Please subscribe, rate, and review. This week, gal-dem's Head of Editorial Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff talks about the publication's evolution into a fully-fledged and funded publishing business, why they decided to have a print magazine alongside the digital site, and the lessons she will and won't be applying from her time working with other publishers. She also explains why it's so important to have a truly supportive internship scheme, and how publishers need to prepare themselves to properly support diversity in the workplace before bringing people in. In the news round-up, Peter and Esther are joined by International Magazine Centre founder Nikki Simpson. The team discuss Vox Media's acquisition of New York Magazine, how the BBC has found itself in the middle of a racism row with Naga Munchetty, and the launch of Platinum magazine from DC Thomson.
In this week's episode of The Pleasure Podcast we have a rare interview with Wild Iris - sex worker and Queer woman of colour. Her name and voice have been altered to protect her anonymity.Wild Iris speaks eloquently and openly about her experiences of having sex with men in order to fund her true passions in life. Iris shares how her autism, negotiating the social interactions and office politics, meant keeping a ‘regular' job was virtually impossible and how that led her to consider sex work. We discuss the various forms of sex work and her views on ‘sugaring'. Wild Iris reveals how the majority of her time is devoted to administration rather than sex: the business of hotel bookings and websites.Iris talks openly about the groups of men she works with, the services she provides and what it's taught her about men. Fascinatingly she reveals how her sexuality intersects with the work she does and how her skin colour makes men view her, in the world vs in a private sexual space.Iris talks movingly about loneliness and otherness, the isolation of sex work; and sadly, why relationships with health care and particularly the Police are a source of threat and violence to sex workers, how the current law continues to make sex workers remain at risk.Read Wild Iris's Gal Dem article on loneliness and sex work here. Whilst she prefers to stay away from social media, if you would like to contact her directly, Wild Iris has given permission for her email address to be shared: wild.iris.366@gmail.com.If you're affected by any of the issues raised in this episode or interested in learning more about keeping sex workers safe, please check out the links:The Sex Worker Advocacy and Resistance Movement (SWARM): https://www.swarmcollective.orgNational Ugly Mugs: https://uknswp.org/https://decrimnow.org.uk*CW: This episode has mentions of rape and sexual violence.*As usual, we would love to hear from you and continue the conversation. "We have money all of a sudden!" Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff is the editor of gal-dem, the magazine made by women of colour and non-binary people of colour, which made an immediate impact when its first print issue launched in 2016. They've been working hard since then to increase their reach, for example with their takeover of The Guardian's Weekend magazine last year, and this week saw the release of their first book, I Will Not be Erased. I caught up with Charlie to speak about the rapid growth of gal-dem, including the funding they received earlier this year, which is allowing them to embark upon "gal-dem 2.0" – the ambitious next stage of their development.
Liv Little is the founder of gal-dem, the magazine for women and non-binary people of colour, which she started while still at university and has grown into a unique publication with huge collaborations. 2018 was a big year for gal-dem, with a takeover of the Guardian Weekend, a pop up bookshop, and somehow Liv is still only 25. She talks to Lauren about freelancing for Elle and the BBC while running gal-dem, thoughts on building brilliant teams, and her advice for creating a magazine.

We had an epic chat with Kelechi Okafor (are you ready for the receipts?): pole dancing instructor, studio owner, actress, public speaker, letter writer extraordinaire and a baby girl. In part two Kelechi lays out her journey from teaching pole dancing classes to establishing her very own studios in North and South London. Kelechi speaks about overcoming small thinking with the support of her partner, maximising the potential of her first studio and making a profit while keeping prices accessible, and raising her profile through features in Time Out, BBC Three’s Twerking Through Trauma and a Gal Dem live event at the V&A. Kelechi speaks about the safe space she’s created in her classes where women feel comfortable enough to take their wigs off to get down, as well as the importance of sensuality and eroticism for maintaining a form of sexiness that hold humanity at its core. Make sure you also catch our minisode where Kelechi break's down the benefits of crowd-funding. Gal-dem is a magazine and creative collective which supports the creative work of women and non-binary people of colour. Created in response to the lack of diversity in Britain's top institutions, gal-dem has made its mark as a platform for thought provoking content.
The Gentlewoman and Gal Dem are two very different magazines combatting a common problem: how women are spoken to by women's magazines. To coincide with International Women's Day, we invited editors Penny Martin and Liv Little into the Pod to discuss their growing magazines, and the role of the editor.
