The definition of ‘self-expression' is the expression of one's feelings, thoughts, or ideas, through words, choices or actions, especially in writing, art, music, or dance. Sounds easy doesn't it? The trouble is that we are all so bogged down with messages about how we should look, think, speak, and act; that it can make it difficult to let go of expectations and simply be ourselves… and for women this conditioning has many additional layers! What about you? How fully self-expressed are you? Do you want to speak on stage but feel like an imposter positioning yourself as an expert in your niche? Maybe you do speak, but on stage you find yourself playing safe, or trying to be what you think a presenter should be instead of sharing your personality with the audience? Well, my guest today will be sharing some ideas to help you to be more you. Michelle Minnikin is a Chartered Organisational Psychologist, speaker coach, and author of Good Girl Deprogramming. For many years Michelle struggled under the weight of expectations, playing small, putting herself last and being a ‘good girl', without even realising she was doing it. Eventually she discovered she was suffering from ‘good girl conditioning'! In this show she shines a light on what that is and how it has disempowered women for years, decades, and generations. And whether you're a man or a woman, who is burdened by how you are told you should be … you will get tips in this show, for how to deprogram that conditioning and set yourself free! What you'll discover: How Michelle became a rebel and why Why Michelle is to women like Orpheus is to Neo in the matrix What's on the other side of good girl conditioning. The resistance she has encountered to her book and ideas. How you can tell if you're a good girl. How good girl conditioning may be holding you back. "I was feeling this self censoring and constant push pull in sharing my voice and just feeling quite afraid of going for things that I wanted and so I got really interested in that gap and started to work with people with those clients around the inner critic. And my first guess was like, oh, we're going to dig into their childhoods and find who was the critical source in their lives that created this voice. And very quickly, I found out that was not going to be my answer because I would hear the exact same adult inner critic in these women. And some were like, my parents were so supportive. And some were like, my parents ignored me, my parents cheered me on, my parents were so critical. And yet this sort of adult, more professionally oriented, more adult selfhood oriented inner critics sounded the same despite this wide range of early experiences. So then I had to look a little more culturally and also biologically. And what became clear was that that inner critic voice really spoke up when something took us out of our comfort zone, or when we were contemplating something out of our comfort zone. And to place that in a context of gender, for women, what is unsafe and what we very deeply learn is unsafe is visibility, power, too much success, shining bright, standing out from the crowd in some way, all of that." So Says Tara Mohr, a coach, educator and the author of Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead, which is celebrating its 10th birthday this fall. I first met Tara a decade ago and was so taken with her and her insights that we did four stories together—stories that were deeply resonant with women everywhere. These stories were about understanding—and releasing—your inner critic, locating your inner mentor, examining the ways in which you keep yourself in the shadows and why, and the most potent one of them all: why women are so quick to criticize other women. We cover this same ground 10 years on—and it's just as powerful as it was then. I loved reconnecting with Tara and can't wait to do more with her over the coming decades, specifically revisioning what it might look like if more women led—but not in a model defined by men, in a way that might be uniquely their own. The Catalyst: Sparking Creative Transformation in Healthcare
In a world where wealth is often measured in material terms, Dr. Lara Salyer invites us to consider a deeper, more personal definition in this episode of The Catalyst Podcast. Sparked by a TikTok video that reminisces about childhood indicators of wealth, Dr. Salyer urges us to reflect on perceptions that may have shaped our understanding of wealth. She suggests that just as we periodically reassess our health, our ingrained beliefs about money and success might also require a fresh perspective! Wealth, as Dr. Salyer presents it, is a multifaceted concept. She shares her own experiences of finding richness in life's simple joys, like the comfort of her own space and the liberty to align her medical practice with her personal ethos. Because money mindset is so important, within Dr. Salyer's mentorship, The Catalyst Studio, Financial Fridays are dedicated to supporting functional and holistic practitioners to challenge, explore and be aware of their money stories. To inspire a reimagined approach to wealth, Dr. Salyer regularly recommends transformative reads, including "Happy Money" by Ken Honda, “Happy Pocket Full Of Money” by David Caperon Gikandi, and “Playing Big” by Tara Mohr. In closing, Dr. Salyer invites a shift in focus from financial accumulation to nurturing well-being and self-expression, personal fulfillment and joy. Quotes: • “A quote that really resonated with me is ‘Some people are so poor that all they have is money.” (4:14 | Dr. Lara Salyer) • “Wealth has become blown out of proportion and this is why I was diligent in making sure we had financial Fridays inside my mentorship, the Catalyst Studio. And my favorite thing is these “Financial Fridays” now where we unpack the idea of wealth and all the behavior around it. Are you hoarding it? Do you have a scarcity mindset? Do you spend it as soon as you get it because you're not sure when you'll get more? And there's all these things to unpack. And this is wonderful.” (5:17 | Dr. Lara Salyer) • “Wealth isn't just about money or financial need. It's also about how your energy is spent. How your energy is curated again and recharged.” (10:21 | Dr. Lara Salyer) Links Happy Money by Ken Honda: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MJHJ57T?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_QFR6QY5ZAXP2NXTHCFMR Happy Pocket Full of Money by David Cameron Gikandi: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1571747362?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_HK64JTF2PDMT2QHF9MCS Playing Big by Tara Mohr: https://www.amazon.com/Playing-Big-Practical-Wisdom-Create/dp/1592409601 Connect with Lara: Mentorship: https://drlarasalyer.com/catalyst Archetype Quiz: https://3nb09zv7070.typeform.com/archetype Website: https://drlarasalyer.com The Catalyst Way: https://drlarasalyer.com/catalyst Instagram: @drlarasalyer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drlarasalyer Linked-In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drlarasalyer/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/DrLaraSalyer TikTok: @Creativity.Doctor Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm
Do you truly believe that you have what it takes to succeed? Or do you find yourself held back by self doubt? Too often, we don't trust ourselves enough to make the big power moves or decisions that will move the needle in our businesses. You may believe that you're too inexperienced or that you don't have the skills necessary to take your best next steps or attract your dream clients. It's really easy to fall victim to feelings of imposter syndrome! But as I tell my coaching clients and community, you already have all the best answers inside of you — all you need to do is learn how to access your inner mentor.Your inner mentor is a version of yourself that is further ahead, more experienced, and has the insights that you need to take your business to the next level. While this concept may sound a little woo-woo or magical, it reflects the very foundation of good coaching work. The best coaches don't just offer you answers and instructions, they help you tap into and trust your own knowledge and intuition! This episode of The Business of Thinking Big draws on the concept of the inner mentor developed by Tara Mohr in her book Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead. This is a Girl Take the Lead Sound Bite which is a short episode which may be a bit more about a topic we've covered like our episode today or a quick inspiration. This episode builds on Tara Mohr's book, Playing Big, which we covered in our previous episode. Here are 3 takeaways from today's episode: 1. As women transition from student mode to career they need the ability to improvise, challenge authority, trust they already know and make their work visible. 2. Knowing your personal brand can help us know our value and build our confidence. 3. Probably the hardest thing for us in Playing Big, is making our work known and building awareness of it. We can practice doing this and if you need someone to share your successes with, I'm here. Just email me and I'll hold the space for you. This episode is for anyone that wants to speak up, create and lead and as Tara Mohr says it's Playing Big, the title of her book which was named a best book of the year by Apple's iBooks. Tara Mohr is an expert on women's leadership and well-being. She is the creator and teacher of the global Playing Big leadership program for women, and of the Playing Big Facilitators Training for coaches, therapists, managers, and mentors. She is a Co-Active Training Institute certified coach with an MBA from Stanford University and an undergraduate degree in English literature from Yale and lives in San Francisco with her husband and three children. We'll be covering the first couple chapters about our inner critic and voice of our inner wisdom which she calls our inner mentor. Here are 3 takeaways from today's episode: 1. Everyone has an inner critic and it can hold us back from playing big. 2. Naming and becoming aware of that critic is Step One in playing big. 3. Having a relationship with our inner critic is a lifelong journey but as we make peace with that part of us, our intuitive self or inner mentor, can immerge which can help and comfort us on that journey! But, as the workforce evolves with the entry of Gen Z, current workplace cultures are being questioned, as they no longer align with contemporary work expectations. I admit, I am in denial that I will ever be going through menopause (I'm sure many women are). I don't want to think about yet another life change. I just had my kids. And maybe that's the problem. As a society we are pretending that these issues don't exist, resulting in a lack of representation and systems that reflect women's needs at different life stages. We still prize youth in women and don't see enough models of what life looks like as you age. My guest today is a trailblazer who is rewriting the narrative and proving that you don't need to be 30 under 30 to overcome addictions, battle self-hate AND start a new business. Tune in if you want to be seriously inspired about carving out your own path and doing it on your own terms. With host retail coach Wendy Batten https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/ Show Notes: Did you know we have an active book club in my Level Up Mastermind? It's true - we do! One of our amazing members - Millie Blackwell of Mrs. Blackwell's Village Bookshop - curates an incredible list of books for our Mastermind members and leads our book club each month. Today on the podcast, Millie and I are having a fun time reviewing the books we read so far this year, complete with star ratings! Don't miss the first episode Millie and I recorded together. Bonus points for whoever knows which of the books we review today Millie called out as a favorite in Episode 132. It's linked below! A quick reminder - before you shop the big guys for you reading and listening think local retail first. How to support your local booksellers: 1. Shop in store! This is the very best way for your local booksellers to help you find exactly what you are looking for - and maybe even a little more! 2. Shop your local bookstore's website or through bookshop.org . Bookshop.org is an amazing alternative to shopping on Amazon. You can choose which shop you want your purchase to support. Use bookshop.org if your favorite local bookstore doesn't have their own website. 3. Purchase audiobooks through Libro.fm. Libro.fm is an alternative to Audible. New Zealand followers, you can shop directly with Millie HERE. The Books: Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead by Tara Mohr (2014) Our thoughts/themes/takeaways: To us, this book was all about overcoming your inner critic and self doubt. Millie shared this quote: “Feedback can only tell you something about the person giving you the feedback. It can't tell you anything essential about yourself.” - Tara Mohr I loved this one: “I wrote this book because I'm tired of meeting women who have important messages to share but whose self-doubt is keeping them quiet. I'm tired of encountering woman after woman diluted by the myth that she needs to be MORE of something: more qualified, more prepared… than she already is in order to share her ideas.” - Tara Mohr Millie & Wendy's Star Rating: 3.5 / 5 stars - We both loved the book but the themes have been exhausted over the past 9 years. Therefore, it didn't hit home as much as it would have had the book been read back when it was written in 2014. Get Different: Marketing That Can't Be Ignored by Mike Michalowicz (2021) Our thoughts/themes/takeaways: Following your industry's “best practice” marketing creates white noise. If everyone else is doing it, your business won't stand out. We have to differentiate our marketing to stand out from the competition. Millie and Wendy's Star Rating: 4.5 / 5 stars - Millie loved this one so much that she listened to the audio and then bought the book to highlight and refer back. We both liked that this book had practical, actionable marketing ideas for small business owners. I'll Be Back: How to Get Customers to Come Back Again and Again by Shep Hyken (2021) Our thoughts/themes/takeaways: Customer loyalty is not about a lifetime, it's about the next time every time. Hyken talks about marketing for loyalty vs. loyalty programs: We need our customers to want to choose us. We need to have our team on board with knowing why we can't just be mediocre. Millie & Wendy's Star Rating - 4 / 5 stars: Shep knows his audience (busy shop owners) and caters to them: this book is easy to read and has great chapter summaries. I interviewed Shep Hyken back in Episode 118. Perennial Seller: The Art of Making and Marketing Work That Lasts by Ryan Holiday (2017) Our thoughts/themes/takeaways: We need to always be looking outside of our own industry for inspiration. Another takeaway that got us thinking was Holiday's idea of relationships as a platform that needs to be nurtured. Millie & Wendy's Star Rating - 4.5 / 5 stars: Lots of the ideas in this book were new ones that we hadn't heard before. 4000 Weeks by Oliver Burkeman (2021) Our thoughts/themes/takeaways: If you live to the age of 80, you will live for 4000 weeks which, according to Millie is “terrifyingly and insultingly short.” This “time reminder” (not time management) book is all about embracing that limit and realizing we will never get everything done in our lives that we want to get done. We need to be intentional about what is important to us including rest and recovery. Millie's Star Rating - 5 / 5 stars: Millie reminds US readers to not judge this book by its cover. Wendy's Star Rating - 4.75 / 5 stars: I would give the audiobook 5 / 5, but found the paperback harder to pick up. How to Grow Your Small Business by Donald Miller (2023) Our thoughts/themes/takeaways: This one is textbook-like, specific, all-action: A great how-to guide for someone who wants to start a small business. Miller uses an airplane analogy to break a business down into 6 parts which when we discussed in the mastermind, many had strong feelings. Millie and Wendy's Star Rating: 4 / 5 - Neither of us were in the space of needing a book like this at the time we read it, but it is great if it is the type of business book you are looking for. Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown (2014) Our thoughts/themes/takeaways: Millie loved the chapter on sleep and buffering: creating buffers in our lives to relieve stress. My big takeaway was the reminder that there are trade-offs with every decision and you have to be disciplined with decision making. “Simplify, eliminate, reduce. Do less but better.” - Greg McKeown About Millie and Mrs. Blackwell's Village Bookshop: Mrs. Blackwell is a specialist in non-fiction categories and stationery. She grew up on an apricot orchard in Central Otago but never really cared for the taste of the fruit. Mrs. Blackwell's Village Bookshop is an independent bookshop for inquisitive minds and romantic souls in Greytown, New Zealand. Your inner critic can latch onto aspects of your life that you don't like, ways that you've showed up in the past that felt troubled, things you've said that you don't feel good about, anything that can be used as a source of self-disappointment, and create repetitive criticisms that become inner self-talk that are the self-created limitations to finding happiness and contentment. In this episode you are invited to consider how to paradoxically befriend your inner critic in order to use it as an information provider of what you want to create your fulfilled and beautiful life as well as the ways you've been conditioned to believe what's important before your grow-up self could make those important decisions. Journaling prompts are suggested to further your exploration. "Du bist nicht gut genug. Das ist nicht möglich. Du brauchst noch XY, bevor du starten kannst... " Kommt dir das bekannt vor? Vermutlich hörst du hier die Stimme des Inneren Kritikers. Der dich in deiner sicheren Zone halten will.
Tara Mohr is a career coach and the author of Playing Big. In this special episode, Mohr guides us through an audio workshop on breaking free from our inner critic. In this conversation, Gladys and I discuss the critical nature of movement in our lives and work. We also explore how to identify where to start and why it's more about beginning that finishing. Key Points All life needs to move. If we're not moving, we can't function. Stuckness is an illusion. If we know what to look for, movement is all around us and within us. A flashlight in the dark can only see a few steps ahead — but that's enough to move in the right direction and begin seeing more. Look for the trickle around the dam. Noticing where movement already is will often be the starting point to go further. Doctors don't heal patients, only patients can heal themselves. Pay attention to beginning instead of finishing. I am reading the book Playing Big by Tara Mohr and I am learning so much about taking a second look at our fear and criticism to help us heal and grow. What does your inner critic sound like? In this episode, Wendy introduces coach Lorna Wilson and they dive deep into how to silence your inner critic, identify the opinions or feedback you should be paying attention to, and how not to be reliant on receiving praise from others. Wendy shares how Lorna has helped her reframe criticism and tap into her own inner mentor. The discussion stems from the book Playing Big by Tara Mohr, which Lorna and Wendy both highly recommend to all women! Lorna Wilson's journey as a life coach began with a story of courage and resilience. As a young widow, she learned early on that navigating life is certainly not always easy, but it's our life experiences that can make us stronger and more determined to create a better future. Drawing on this strength, Lorna became a certified professional Life Coach, using her personal journey to help countless women on their own paths to personal growth and fulfillment. She then became a certified alcohol-free coach, where she helps women achieve a healthier, happier lifestyle by ending the conflict between their conscious desire to drink less and their unconscious belief that alcohol is beneficial. Lorna's career experience in managing non-profit organizations and leadership roles in local government has given her a unique perspective on the challenges facing leaders and individuals in public service. She understands how those challenges can take you in a direction where you're no longer in alignment with your true calling, and that's why she's committed to helping her clients navigate the twists and turns of life, rediscover their true purpose, and unlock their full potential. If you've ever felt addicted to praise, or like one critic could topple your self-worth, you don't want to miss this episode. Show NotesIn this episode, Sandi speaks with Kim Marsh, Founder of The Open Book Company & Writing / Book Coach.Kim shifted from corporate life as a VP of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion & Communications to found her company. Kim talks about the ‘beautiful no's' that led her to the ah-ha moment when she decided to start her company. She first started as a freelance writer as a side gig while working full-time. Kim shares that when people told her she was finally living her dream, that didn't quite resonate with her. Kim shares that she realized:“It's not that I'm living my dream, but now I get to dream.” Kim had people ask her to help them with career writing (LinkedIn bios, resumes, articles, and books). Her clients held a mirror up to her to where she was adding value. In Kim's coaching and writing circles authors, coaches, entrepreneurs, inspirational speakers, and "but-I'm-not-really-a-writer" writers learn how to find, hone, and use their voice. Kim coaches clients through mindset issues and has created a safe space where they can share (or choose not to share) work. The top two challenges she sees with many clients are 1) carving out time to write and 2) imposter syndrome and related mindset issues. Inner Critic work is central to living authentically, so in this episode we take a deep dive into what it is, what function it serves, and how to live a joyful life alongside it. I begin by defining what our Inner Critic is, and explain that it's ultimate goal is a benevolent one: it wants to keep us safe. Historically, and even today our inner critic plays its part. It helps us pre-empt disaster, apply scepticism and prioritize critical thinking. The shadow side of this executive function, however, is that there is no room for empathy for self, expansive thinking and creativity, because all of these things require risk taking and stepping into the unknown, which the Inner Critic does not allow. I illustrate more limitations our Inner Critic imposes and posit that in order to live the most expansive version of our lives, we need tools to subdue it. I then walk you through 3 tools you can implement immediately: giving your Inner Critic a personality, recognising your Inner Critic as merely a thought which can always be changed, and acknowledging, thanking and ‘relieving' your Inner Critic from the duty of mental bodyguard. “Spending time around people who inspire you will not only affect your career, it will change your life.” Shannon Siriano Greenwood My guest today, Shannon Siriano Greenwood, was inspiring throughout our conversation. It felt like Shannon was my older sister, and I was learning from her wisdom. She's made bold choices in her personal and professional life after experiencing postpartum depression and burnout. We have a lot in common, so it was great to talk with someone that truly gets it. During my conversation with Shannon, we covered: 1. What hyperfunctioning, overdriving, and chasing all the gold stars means 2. What prompted Shannon to start the Rebelle community 3. How Rebelle is different than Chief, another female membership community 4. What inspires Shannon and the book she gives away to all of her friends 5. The power of friendships and close community 6. Welcome to Ever Better Today: the daily podcast for creating your optimal business, career, or overall life in ten minutes or less. I'm Lisa Conners Vogt, Executive and Leadership Coach and founder of Ever Better Coaching and Consulting. Let's jump in! Notes from this episode are below. If you're not mindfully focusing your brain - every alert, email, person, or thought could become a distraction. If you can decrease these distractions, your productivity will go through the roof! Yesterday I discussed how to find a quiet space with fewer interruptions. Once you've found that space, here are seven ways to focus your brain. Ways to Focus your Brain 1) Control Your Phone Take a look at the alerts that are set up on your phone. Are you getting alerts that relate to work? Your personal life? Are you getting them for social media? Breaking news? Do you really need this information immediately?! If not, turn them off! 2) Block Time for Strategic Thinking Build strategic thinking time blocks into your calendar once a week or every day. Spend the time thinking about a challenge, the future, or your vision, and stay focused! 3) Use Paper Step away from the computer, put down the phone, and just use paper! It's been proven to enhance creativity! 4) Use a Meditation App There are lots of meditation apps out there, but I use Insight Timer. Whenever I need a stretch of time to work on a specific project, I turn on my favorite track that instantly allows me to focus. It's a signal to my brain that it's time to work. 5) Use YouTube Study Music Similar to Insight Timer, YouTube has a wide variety of instrumental music options. Just search “study music” or “instrumental music for studying” or anything along those lines. 6) Use Earbuds As you listen to Insight Timer or YouTube, you can block out external sounds with your earbuds! Earbuds signal to your brain that it's your focus time. Sometimes I even put in my earbuds and forget to turn on music! 7) Use a Subtle Distraction Listen to a webinar or podcast. I love listening to people who inspire me. I find their voices very soothing. By putting something on in the background, I get subliminal encouragement while working on a task. Tara Mohr, the author of Playing Big, has some great webinars! I love hearing her voice, and she constantly inspires me. I can still work while listening because her words are not distracting enough to take me away from my tasks. So try these out for yourself! If you've got other ways to focus your brain, please send me an email at Lisa@everbetteru.com. Learn more about Ever Better Coaching and Consulting at https://www.everbetteru.com/
