In this Episode I sit down and talk with Amadeo Bachar. He is a painter and artist who portrays often realistic paintings of fish, both in profile and in action, that have captured the fishing community. We talk about inspiration, capturing the magic of realism, what the ocean means to him, how we can help protect this ocean we love in a lasting way and much more. Amadeo travels to many fishing shows and outdoor expo's as well and teaches art to others. We talk about how this day impacted him and changed him. Jack is full of excitement and energy, one of my favorite friends to nerd out about fishing. He has fished his whole life, worked on a commercial boat fishing for tuna, caught tons of beautiful fish, both fresh and salt water. He is full of adventure.
In this episode, I talk with Faith Beyer, RN and podcast host of Radiant Health Outdoors as we talk about the connection between health and wellness and it's connection to hunting and fishing. In this episode Ira Waldman and I talk about his journey into Saltwater bass fishing from his early obsession with small and largemouth bass in the Pacific Northwest. Ira is an established videographer here in Southern California, with years of experience working in the social media space for the fishing industry. We talk about how social media impacts fishing in both in positive and negative ways. We move towards talking about how one can successfully use social media for their benefit without maybe being pulled down from the negative aspects of expectations and comparison. To follow along Ira's fishing content and new business follow him at: @Ira.waldman @waldman.media
While hunting and fishing provide a life changing opportunity for most. Our bodies and our minds, are truly the foundation for who we are, and what we are able to do. Especially as we get older, it becomes more important we live a life we are proud of day after day, but that takes sacrifice and a lot of work. I am captivated by the resilience of a body builder, because your body cannot lie. What accomplishments you may have once made, your body quickly forgets. Therefore, it is only up to you, to work all over again and make yourself again. This is no easy task. If it was easy, than everybody would be ripped. But somehow it seems like only few people are able to dedicate their lives to this discipline. I believe that this discipline is important in everything we do, whether that be in the outdoors or our personal lives. In, this podcast, Anthony breaks down finding the motivation day after day & the feeling of finding confidence and living into your best self. -- @Ant_Woodz - instagram @allweknote - journal antwoodzcoaching.com

Wes Pierson is a captain and part owner of Bight Sportfishing. He has spent years and years searching for some of the biggest pelagic fish from tuna, swordfish and white seabass. He enjoys the dedication and knowledge it takes to seek out the elusive fish of white seabass. But Wes isn't just about fishing, on his day off, we decided to hike around in the high desert looking for Chukar and Quail. I liked his approach to being outside. His interest in adventure, animals, clean food and simply being outside more brought about a peace and wisdom that was refreshing to be around. If you have any desire to catch a White Seabass, I highly encourage you to seek out Bight Sportfishing and look up Wes on his instagram @onedowner

Gregg Shaw is a co-owner of Ampal Creative, fly-fisherman, and hunter. He has spent many years fly fishing for many years, and also a bird hunter and adventurer. Through these experiences, Gregg has found certain practices and thoughts that are to me very helpful to find what success and even happiness might mean. Mastery, perfection and simple, are his approach. We talk a lot about expectations, dopamine, comparison and many other things we might feel while calling ourselves a hunter. I think the insights Gregg shares can help all of us find a little more wisdom in our journey into being not just quality hunters and fishermen but good people.

In a comfortable world of standard 8-5 office jobs and uber eats, safety, and routine there are some that pursue different paths. Cole King is one of those, called up to Alaska to fish with his family years ago for Sockeye Salmon. This venture has taught him about grit, hard work, lack of sleep, stress, cold, danger unlike many could truly imagine. Alaska is often called the Last Frontier, for a reason…things are often bigger, grander, wilder and more dangerous than in the lower 48… it's just the the nature of the beast. and most can't make it through these conditions. The question that must be asked becomes why would anyone choose this life, because it's definitely not for the money, but maybe accomplishment that a commercial fisherman that keeps them coming back. One thing is for sure in Alaska, calm seas don't make sailors… I mean fisherman. To follow along with Cole and his Family's business please find them on instagram @bristolcrownfisheries
In today's podcast we talk to Brad Thompson who spends his summer ocean hunting with his spear gun and through Fall roaming the hills and wilderness land hunting after western big game while drawing parallels from each practice. Brad is the real deal, down to earth, calm and inviting. He has found lots of success in and out of the water, but is always inviting others into the sport. Because spearfishing has changed his life, Brad led the local spearfishing club, OC spearos for 4 years, but is equally friendly and inviting about sharing his knowledge for landing hunting as well. In this episode Brad talks about many of his great adventures, even a near death experience while diving, hunting tactics in the ocean and on land, and wisdom for all outdoor activities.
CCA California is a non-profit association and advocate for anglers all around America. In California specifically they help fight for the recreation of all anglers and the conservation of our fisheries through providing education, habitat and access. Darren and Chris host the podcast for CCA California and have years of experience on the water, from deck handing to fishing all around California. In many ways, I, personally got to share more of my story and my vision for Sagebrush Wisdom, why they give lots of wisdom for anyone interested in fishing in California. I was honored to podcast with them, and looks forward to podcasting again with both of them in the future. The two worlds of fly fishing and conventional fishing hardly come close to each other, and when they do they often collide. Opinions, camps, teams, tactics, ideologies and practices remain often untested. Well, Ty Adnani loves both, for separate reasons, but these practices help him fishing in both scenarios. Bridging the gap and combining strengths, Ty finds pleasure in all fishing, seeking after new fish, new tactics and it's proving in his fishing abilities. Ty has been fishing for fresh water bass for many years, but wanted to pursue fly fishing a few years ago to target trout, red fish and even bone fish with a fly. This took him by storm and consumed him for some time. Now he combines both skills to routinely seek out spotted bay bass in our local "pond" Newport Harbor. In this podcast we talk about many tactics for fishing for spotted bay bass, while incorporating skills we have picked up along the way for all fishing... and hopefully finding some fun along the way.

Doug May has been a lifelong hunter and angler from Southern California. Learning from his father, he has hunted and fished throughout California for over 60 years. Even more, Doug has traveled around the world and caught nearly 50 species on the fly. Doug has a story of many would strive for as a life well earned in search for something more. He has a picturesque progression of fly fishing through his life and he's not stopping anytime soon. I truly believe there is a wisdom that only time can tell -- the history of California, the progression of the sport and art of fishing and hunting, but also what is important in life. Doug has it all. I was so inspired by Doug's respectful approach and excitement as an outdoorsman. He lives a life full of imagination, drive, and wisdom that both gives reverence to a rich history of fly fishing, and also inspiration for the future of these activities. -- For more information on San Diego Salt Water Fishing - please visit www.sandiegosaltwaterfishing.com
"One of nature's greatest gifts is the abundance of food that is growing and thriving all around us available for our nourishment". Windward Westward believes that food brings us together, but also presents an opportunity to connect to the world around us. Whether we harvest our own food, or shop at the grocery store regularly Wendell Berry says "eating is an agricultural act". In many ways, the food we choose to eat directly impacts the world around us. We have the opportunity to intentionally consume in order to give back to the world around us. For a long time Windward Westward has had the goal of "Deeper relationships with the natural world, richer conversations around the table" and as a result, have created a sustainably sourced food box to facilitate this lifestyle further. Dave Allee sits down to talk more about his vision for the box, the impact of the food industry vs direct to consumer relationships, food, community and helping to give make the world a better place, one table at a time.

Many might dream of being out on the ocean every day - - fishing for big fish whenever you want, but very few would leave comfort and normalcy behind to do it. Tonie Bangos deck hands aboard the Grande out of H&M Landing in San Diego and has quite the stories to tell. She works extremely hard day in and day out, living her dream with very little sleep, pursuing her passion everyday, bringing big fish on board and helping others have the best fishing experience she can. In this podcast we talk about this last year of fishing with historic numbers of dorado, big angry tuna, and her time helping out BD Outdoors with their weekly round up videos and working on getting her Captain's license. Tonie helps countless people everyday use the right fishing gear to land the appropriate fish -- whether that is a holding onto a fish of a lifetime tuna, or tricking a weary yellowtail on a paddy... Tonie loves fishing and wants others to feel the same.
Life Long waterfowl hunter Luke Clark has been obsessed with ducks from early childhood. Through this obsession, he has gotten to travel through all 3 major flyways, pursuing ducks and geese, he has been involved with contest calling for geese, guided snow goose hunts, and worked in the industry for almost 10 years. He has been one of my biggest duck hunting mentors after meeting 4 years ago and since our friendship has flourished. Luke has taught me a lot about pursuing duck hunting the right way. In this episode we talk a lot about what we have learned hunting California public refuges, especially here in Southern California, with the goal of landing ducks in the decoys -- from hiding, calling and decoy set ups, and more... These are the things that get us excited about duck hunting, and I hope it gets you excited too.
Chris, a lifelong friend, has grown into quite an accomplished deer hunting in California, and that is no easy feat. He would probably disagree with me, due to humble demeanor and hard work ethic, but Chris has put in the time, and it shows. While deer hunting the southern A zones in California, is a common quest for eager hunters, the success rate is very low. The hot country late summer, it can be a brutal experience where often times even seeing a deer feels like a miracle. In this episode Chris reviews his early hunting experiences and shares some helpful wisdom to how he found success. In the last 5 years Chris has just started his journey into deer hunting and you can't but help be excited for where he is going to go with this pursuit. This episode is for anyone, as we cover how he began deer hunting, strategy, failure, determination, glassing until your eyes bleed, and so much more, and whether you don't hunt big game at all, or have been hunting for years, I hope you enjoy this one.
Starting from fresh water fly fishing for trout, this podcast covers my very own pursuit for catching a pelagic fish on the fly in Southern California. A story of growth, learning more about the ocean, expanding horizons of how to fish well, breaking the rules, and learning how to fish in a conventional way, in order to finally get better at fly fishing. This is a story that is just beginning for calling Southern California in my home waters as I grow as an angler whether fly fishing, or conventional fishing in general.
California Spiny Lobster season is quickly approaching and Clayton Beaver can't sleep until it comes. Most people wouldn't expect that swimming into the ocean at night, would be one of the most fun hunting and fishing activities awarded with a bounty of tasty tails if found successful. Sometimes it feels more like you are a bandit trying to rob a bank, other times like someone flying through space, wrestling against aliens; lobster diving is a strange but wildly rewarding sport and it has become an obsession for my friend Beaver. In this episode, I love getting to talk to my friend as he is just so stoked about going after these bugs. And as for most people this would easily be a nerve wracking experience, Beaver goes after it in pure fun. Its in this infectious way he approaches lobster diving with so much excitement, stoke and pure joy, and similarly all his other activities whether it is duck hunting, deer hunting, pronghorn or soon to be elk, he shares so much wisdom about how to approach the outdoor space and why I am so happy he is such a close friend.
If fishing was easy, they would call it catching. The wide range of emotions found in these leisure activities sure do have an impact on us -- from euphoria to despair... But what do we do with these? In today's episode I'm talking to my friend, Darren Bagwell, who by day is a Marriage and Family Therapist, but in his off time, loves to find adventure and build relations with those around him. He is deeply caring, he is very wise, and he has some great real life examples as we talk about the psychology around these outdoor activities.
Iowa raised, goose and duck hunter, deer stand extraordinaire, moved to California coast in 2018. The Ocean called to him, and he responded, getting into spearfishing and furthering his hunting skills, but this time underwater. What started as a simple task, has led to a life full of adventures, and finally his first yellowtail out on Catalina island. Cody is not faint of heart, a life well lived, bringing joy to all the people he meets, he encourages you to be be your best, as he also strives to be he best. With the grit, and good sayings like any good cowboy, to the adventure of the west found at Catalina, Cody is the Catalina Cowboy. He's one of the good guys.
Jen Barton created Full Plume Photography in 2018 with her love of being outside and growing passion for waterfowl through California and beyond. A hobby quickly became a passion taking beautiful photos of lots of ducks and geese. She fully immersed herself into duck hunting, traveling thousands of miles, and going on many adventures to both shoot photos of ducks and also hunt them. It's exciting to see, and encouraging to hear her story about how this passion began. Her photography, in my opinion, clearly captures a purity of what duck hunters imagine and dream of. She encourages such a beautiful take on duck hunting, encouraging variety, adventure away from some of the traditional photography of just mallards from the mid-West. She is a California Duck hunter, and a good one at that.
From backcountry archery hunting elk, fly fishing for big trout, even lobster diving when she can and so much more, Logan gives a picture of what being a woman of the wild means to her. From her beginning interest of hunting, and fishing, to being out on many backcountry hunts weeks at a time. Logan talks about her love of elk hunting, overcoming being uncomfortable with the cold, leaning into emotions, being exactly who you are and embracing the part of yourself that is, indeed, wild. This podcast is both for women who have interest in learning how to hunt/ already hunt and for men, as they expand in their growth into the sport of hunting. Spearfishing isn't quite like anything else I've ever experienced, and being good in such a foreign landscape comes at no easy task. In this episode my guest, Mitsuki Hara, talks about her experience spearfishing for, and harvesting the current women's world record for White Seabass, aka the ghost... and so much more about spearfishing. Mitsuki loves the ocean, loves animals, and her and her husband are excellent cooks, who showcase their catch and cook practices from lobster all the way to tuna. To follow along her adventures, please follow @lazy_seal_spears
For a long time climbing a mountain a strong metaphor to aid in telling the hero's journey. In this episode, my friend Connor, talks about how he, climbs a literal mountain, as he ran a full marathon to the top Mt. Whitney and back down a few years back, but also talks about how this challenge seemed to act as a moment of clarity going into the rest of life. A small Business owner, photography, videographer, and a jack of all trades, this podcast points to the struggles, uncertainty, risk and what success means in life, not just one mountain experience. Connor started his business right before the pandemic and had no idea what he was in for, and as he faced the struggles, doubts, and challenges of this risk of his new business he was able to tap into his mental strength brought through physical challenges and these wake up moments and the wisdom brought on by his adventures to be able to take on the challenges in personal life. As we all pursue our dreams and passions, there is often a flip side to that coin of struggle, fear, doubt, pain, uncertainty and what we in those moments when things are hard, in the end, is often what matters most.
As hunters and anglers we spend a lot spend a lot of time out in the field or in the water, but then when we can't be out there, we spend a lot of time dreaming about those experiences and what they could be. In today's episode I talk to Zach Rutledge, who I constantly find myself watching his videos on instagram and youtube as I dream about the next time I get to hunt. Zach, born and raised in Indiana, now lives in Spokane, Wa and works primarily for Pacific Calls. He is an avid waterfowl, turkey hunter and fly angler for both trout and salt water fish. We talk about what inspires him in his adventures, his story telling and filming, as well as his future hopes of dreams for himself and the hunting and fishing community. To find more of his work please go to https://www.zachrutledgecreative.com/ and his instagram @zach.rutledge_ To watch his recent turkey videos visit https://www.youtube.com/user/pacificcalls
In this episode, my friend Mike Borchard and I talk about his dream to pursue Bluefin Tuna in our local waters of Southern California. Starting about 3 years ago, to current, Mike has not stopped following after this dream with many great stories of success and heartbreak. We discuss where this fever for Bluefin came from, and how it is going currently, mixed in with plenty of wisdom about commitment and ambition. Here in Southern California, we are experiencing Bluefin Tuna fishing like we haven't seen in over 100 years, and no one knows when these fish will be gone again. Mike decided a few years ago, he was not going to let this opportunity slip, and take advantage of something that could very well be gone tomorrow, and even more so, seems to live with this attitude in all aspects of his life.
In this episode, I sit down with Eric Chan, Wildlife biologist specializing in habitat conservation and endangered species for California DFW, and talked about his love/obsession for Southern California Waterfowl and Turkey Hunting. Southern California may not be a paradise to pursuit either of these animals, but that doesn't seem to stop Eric at all from making the most of it. f Duck hunting down here since childhood, Eric some great stories of duck hunting down here & how things have changed down here through his years of hunting... We talk some on strategy, tips, calling, and some secrets for how pursue mallards in our local refuge and why mallards really are different than other ducks we hunt, especially in Southern California. Then we move into talking about Turkey Hunting, as many waterfowl hunters also pursue Turkeys, Eric is one of them. Except here in southern California it just may be a bit harder than most places... All the way from the origins of where the Rio Grande Turkeys were reintroduced to California to where we are now in Southern California with Turkeys. Eric shares some stories of joy and struggle, passion and finally how his love for Turkeys brought him to a very special place this last January. Not only is this podcast filled with life long hunting stories, but a lot of science and history to fill in the gaps of understanding what it means to be a waterfowl or turkey hunter here in Southern California. If you have any interesting in bettering your hunting, or starting, the knowledge Eric has is priceless. Please follow @EricHunts and follow along his amazing journey.
Most people would not think of the coast off of Western Washington as a paradise for salt water flying, but they haven't met Josh Phillips, Co-owner of Spawn Fly Fish. In this episode, I get to sit down and chat with co-owner and co-founder of Spawn Fly Fish, and talk about his adventures of fly fishing, fly tying and owning a small business. From fly fishing for rockfish off of a jetty, to pursuing albacore tuna off the dangerous Columbia River Bar, Josh Phillips faces life with full commitment. We discuss how the dream of Spawn Fly Fish was born, how to catch lingcod on a fly rod, what color buck tail you need to buy and so much more. I am constantly inspired by Josh and the small team at Spawn Fly Fish, their imagination, invitation and adventurous nature for fly fishing is something that cannot be denied. This is just the beginning, the ethos, the laying down of foundation of what this podcast is and what I hope for it to become. You will hear a brief introduction of who I am and my background, but more importantly you will hear about where I want to go. I have wanted to make a podcast for a long time, but here, finally now, with the intersection of the Outdoors of fishing, hunting ect... and real stories, practical tips, tricks and tactics and how to become better fishers and anglers, but also humans, I found my vision. This is just the beginning, but we are on our way now...
