Discuss our troublesome relationship to AA literature, including the current GSO controversy about changing "the founders" writings. Alternate steps and the problems they bring. Can the Big Book be rejected entirely and still be AA? Is new literature like "The God Word" being made available, and are other strategies necessary? Embarking on the path to sobriety at a young age and continuing the journey into later years presents a rich tapestry of experiences, challenges, and triumphs. This presentation brings together the stories of individuals who have embraced Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) at various stages of life. From the fresh perspectives of youth to the wisdom of older members who came into the program young, we will delve into the unique insights gained from sharing experience, strength, and hope across generations of recovering members. This recording is from ICSAA 2024, Saturday 10:30 AM, September 21, 2024, in Orlando, Florida, led by Stephanie F.There was a battery issue with the recorder, so it does cut off earlier than the session went. This workshop focused on the primary dangers of broken anonymity in 12 step fellowships. Topics include the dangers of privacy breaches and how this can expose individuals to judgment or harm from employers, family, or the public. This breach can deter participation, erode trust among members, and lead to legal or professional consequences for affected individuals. Additionally, it undermines the reputation of 12 step fellowships and its effectiveness by compromising the confidentiality of members and providing a safe and supportive environment, crucial for recovery. Maintaining anonymity is not just a tradition but a fundamental principle designed to protect individuals and ensure the success of recovery programs. This recording is from ICSAA 2024, Sunday 1:30 PM, September 22, 2024, in Orlando, Florida, led by Tracy C. and Stephanie F.Secular AA is AA sobriety that is neither religious nor irreligious, focusing on the practical, humanist tools of Alcoholics Anonymous and borrowed from the wider recovery community. Many of us stay involved in "traditional" AA; in fact some of us only (or at least mainly) go to such meetings and are active in AA General service. Of these, some are "out there" as unbelievers, others not so much. Some see Secular AA as an attempt to evolve the culture of the fellowship we love from within rather than any kind of alternative. Many of us don't. Let's discuss tactics, war stories, experience and explore presuppositions and challenge them. This recording is from ICSAA 2024, Sunday 9:00 AM, September 22, 2024, in Orlando, Florida, led by Kurt R.Secular AA is AA sobriety that is neither religious nor irreligious, focusing on the practical, humanist tools of Alcoholics Anonymous and borrowed from the wider recovery community. Beth Aich is the author of We're Not All Egomaniacs: Adapting the Twelve Steps for Alcoholics with Low Self-Esteem. Some of us come to Alcoholics Anonymous feeling terrible about ourselves and are told, bewilderingly, that our problem is too much ego and a lack of humility. Bill W. described himself as an egomaniac. He put his own needs and wants ahead of others, was grandiose, felt entitled, and thought he was all-powerful. He called this the alcoholic personality type and designed a program to crush the ego as the foundation of sobriety. But what about alcoholics who normally put others' needs before their own and see themselves as less-than, unentitled, not enough, defective, impostors, losers? Our egos need building, not deflating. The Steps can be modified to build and strengthen our sense of self, to grow from a place of feeling unlovable into a strong sober person, no longer dependent on alcohol or external validation to feel good. This recording is from ICSAA 2024, Saturday 10:30 AM, September 21, 2024, in Orlando, Florida, led by Beth H.The presentation slides can be found on www.aasecular.org/icsaa2024, direct link here.Secular AA is AA sobriety that is neither religious nor irreligious, focusing on the practical, humanist tools of Alcoholics Anonymous and borrowed from the wider recovery community. Glenn Rader is the author of Modern 12 Step Recovery: Updated Steps Support from Science and Psychology Practical Guidance. Today's talk is about cognitive distortions, which are irrational and exaggerated ways of thinking common with anxiety, depression and substance use disorder, including alcoholism. In the rooms, we hear the term "stinking thinking." For Glenn, it's all the same. Dwelling on the negative, overgeneralizing, catastrophizing and black and white thinking, Glenn shares some of the traps about his personal journey and how observing thoughts, investigation and other cognitive behavioural theory practices (CBT) have helped him along his recovery journey. Last month (August 2024), JEB celebrated 46 years of sobriety, and he is a retired Licensed Professional Counselor. In an interactive session, we will explore what has been for JEB the most important part of Step 12 practicing the Steps as a program of living, applying what we first learn as we clean up the wreckage of our past. In Step Twelve of Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, Bill wrote about this lifelong practice, “Here we begin to practice all the Steps in our daily lives so that we and those around us may find emotional sobriety.” This session will present a Personalized Version of the Steps, based upon the actions Bill described on pages 60 through 88, minus the make-believe old ideas, with questions we can ask ourselves in measuring our progress. He called this “a spiritual program of action,” choosing the word “principle” to emphasize that we now have principles for living, “a course of action." Alcoholism is a family disease. If you have been impacted by another person's drinking, Al-Anon is for you, whether that person is still drinking or not. Come share the experience, strength and hope of panel members, who each have different relationships with the disease of alcoholism: some as parent, adult child, or spouse of alcoholics, and some recovering alcoholics who are dual members of both Al Anon and AA.This recording is from ICSAA 2024, Sunday 10:30 AM, September 22, 2024, in Orlando, Florida, led by Tracy C, Alex, and Marilyn.Secular AA is AA sobriety without the God-stuff, one of the fastest growing subcultures within Alcoholics Anonymous offering 100 agnostic/atheist/freethinkers AA meetings every day + regional events and the International Conference of Secular AA (ICSAA). What a great talk by Dr. Jamie Marich based on her studies, practice and lived experience with addiction, recovery, the 12 Steps and Trauma. Hosted/introduced by Zanner, Jamie tells the ICSAA 2024 Orlando crowd that they had their Dr. Jamie Marich dress and PowerPoint professional presentation upstairs; after sitting through day one's chill-vibe, she thought that frayed gene shorts, a "Sober is Sexy" T-shirt and a talk from the heart was more in order. Not only is Dr. Jamie a recognized clinical professional and author, but their candid shares from lived experience as a trauma survivor and a person with mental health challenges in long-term recovery from addiction. Unafraid of controversy, she will also boldly speak to where her field and society at large gets it wrong about mental health and recovery. Her multi-layered perspective allows her to feel at home in front of diverse audiences as she addresses how to heal our history of wounding in new and creative ways that lead to emotional, spiritual, vocational, and interpersonal flourishing. https://jamiemarich.com/The International Conference of Secular AA first started in Santa Monica in 2014, then called We Agnostics & Freethinkers International AA Conference, went to Austin in 2016, Toronto 2018, online (Zoom) 2020 (when Washington was cancelled due to COVID), 2021, 2022, 2023 and live again in Orlando September 20th to 22nd in Orlando. This recording is from the 2nd annual BC Secular AA Roundup in Langley British Columbia (Canada) July 13, 2024. This is the Washington State panel. What does "conference-approved" literature mean (and what does it not mean)? What are the books that AA members, including irreligious members, read to aid recovery? Well, we don't cover it all, but we get some samples of experience, strength and hope from Washington: Peter A. from Mount Vernon explains the history of the AA Conference and how "conference approved" defined literature created by AA, collectively, and how General Service does not intend to approve of or disapprove of what members read on their own or in our AA groups. Bob J, Sandra J, Lori K and Janice K chime in with special books that aid AA recovery.Other panels/workshops on this day include:Dr. Ray B., “What I have learned and seen in Recovery Communities.” Joe C moderating a workshop on CHIME (Connection, Hope, Identity, Meaning, Empowerment), Shirley R of Nelson BC, NA, Al-Anon and AA member Emotional SobrietyAn update on the Vancouver International AA Convention 2025 and the International Conference of Secular AA in Orlando September 20-22, 2024. For information on ICSAA 2024 in-person in Orlando in September, check out www.aasecular.org/in-person-conference and register soon!William Schaberg, author of Writing the Big Book: Stepping back from his typical focus on the 18-month period from October 1937 to April 1939, Schaberg expands his scope to consider what was going on in the Fellowship from December 1934 to 1939 – a time that Bill Wilson called "The Flying-Blind Period." In this presentation, Schaberg underlines just how "blind" that period actually was and how clueless all the main participants were about where they were going to finally end up in mid-1939. Once again, this is a "challenging the creation myths" presentation, encouraging people to set aside many of the 'hallowed' stories they have so often heard about early A.A. history and inviting them to take an "unfiltered" look at what the facts actually tell us about that time. For more info on secular AA including Zoom meetings, in-person meetings, and virtual gatherings, check out:- https://aasecular.org- secularAA@gmail.comSecular AA is AA sobriety without the God-stuff, one of the fastest growing subcultures within Alcoholics Anonymous offering 100 agnostic/atheist/freethinkers AA meetings every day + regional events and the International Conference of Secular AA (ICSAA).
