Recovery often comes with its share of expectations and surprising realities, as illustrated by a humorous yet enlightening episode from the early days of Alcoholics Anonymous. This video explores the story of a man who claimed to have recovered independently by reading the Big Book, only to struggle significantly when he tried to share his journey in person. We delve into the initial hopes of the AA founders that the book could facilitate recovery on its own and the stark realities that emerged, underscoring the critical need for community support and personal interaction in the recovery process. Join us as we reflect on this story and discuss how it shapes our understanding of recovery today. We'll explore how personal inventories and the guidance of others play indispensable roles in overcoming addiction. Sybil C had been sober for 39 years at the time of this speak, she is from of Los Angeles and is speaking on the subject of How the Traditions Were Born, a topic she lived while working in the AA office in New York at the time of their creation. Sybil got sober in 1941 after trying for 17 years, at her first meeting she was asked to wait out in the hall because it was a closed meeting and they thought she was one of the wives, not one of the drunks, she was also the first woman AA member on the East coast. I was a bit shocked at how well this cleaned up considering how it sounded on my first listen. Repost from mid 2022. "The Doctor's Opinion" was penned in 1939 by Dr. William Silkworth who detoxed people with alcohol use disorder in 1930's New York City, including several sufferers who would become AA pioneers. What was Silkworth's opinion? What did he think - beyond medical intervention - would positively impact outcome rates for people the inebriates whom he helped?"In terms of 'recovery' the main emphasis in A.A. is almost always placed on 'The Program,' and a belief in God as we understand Him. But there are many A.A. members with years and years of successful sobriety that would disagree with this. This idea that the key to success does not rest with a SUPREME BEING, but in the FELLOWSHIP has an interesting history in early Alcoholics Anonymous." Bill Schaberg, author of Writing the Big Book: The Creation of AA @ the 5th biennial International Conference of Secular AA (October 29th and 30th, 2022)Eleven years of primary research on early AA has made author William Schaberg a go-to keynote speaker for scholarly commentary and myth busting about early A.A. history. At #ICSAA 2022, Bill Schaberg makes the argument that a very humanist - not just a supernatural - answer could be found in case studies of early 20th century chronic alcoholics who found lasting sobriety. "One alcoholic talking to another." Schaberg looks at writings and lectures given by Dr. Silkworth in the years leading up to the book Alcoholics Anonymous and William Silkworth's contribution, "The Doctor's Opinion." For atheists, freethinkers, humanists etc., who are looking for relatable written versions of recovery a la Alcoholics Anonymous, reviews have varied widely through AA history. Seven million copies of Living Sober are in circulation, AA's 1975 offering of the practical experiences of hundreds of thousands of accounts and AA anecdotes from AA's first forty years is appreciated by many. AA Grapevine has printed the experiences of unabashed atheists since the 1960s. It wasn't until decade two of the 21st century did AA's publications devote ink to the agnostic/atheist recovery stories in earnest. This recording offers an hour in AA History with Dianne P of Toronto chairing and featuring:John L from Boston, sharing about Living Sober coming off the press when he was a New York City AA members and the usefulness of this down to earth AA offering for secular AA meetings through the years, Susan of Bristol UK, talking about secular AA in England and how the Great Britain 2014 The "God" Word: Agnostics and Atheists in AA came to be, AA Grapevine publisher, Amy B of New York City talks about the hot-off-the-press October 2016 Grapevine special issue on secular AA storytelling. The setting is the We Agnostics, Atheists and Freethinkers International AA Conference, November 2016 in Austin Texas - the second biennial International gathering for secular AA members. Since this recording, One Big Tent: atheist and agnostic AA members share their experience, strength and hope did get published just in time for the 2018 Toronto International Conference of Secular AA and holds the title of the AA Grapevine book with the most pre-publication order of any published offering. William Schaberg wrote Writing the Big Book: The Creation of Alcoholics Anonymous (2019) after over eleven years of primary documentary research. William reflects on the three things the research revealed that drastically altered his core beliefs about early AA:1. Bill Wilson was a fabulous storyteller and not a reliable source for accurate historical details. 2. No Hank Parkhurst—no book! Almost written out of AA history, Hank P had as much to do with the publication of Alcoholics Anonymous as anyone, including Bill Wilson. The influence on this little-known man reverberates in our 12-Step culture, today. 3. Akron AA had no interest and no creative input into the first 164 pages of the Big Book. Despite the story of the book being an ensemble effort of one-hundred AA members, it's (the first 164 pages) is largely Bill W's story. Season Two/Episode 3 of the Secular AA podcast focuses on facts vs. folklore about the creation of the Twelve Steps. Evidence shows that much of what we've heard, even from the author Bill Wilson is more artful, than accurate. The truth will set us free? You tell us. “More will be revealed,” in one hour and 15 minutes; it sure makes for an informative and riveting podcast. This recording is from the December 11, 2021 International Conference of Secular AA held on Zoom. Agnostic, Atheists, Freethinking, Humanist and Pagan AA's have been coming together from around the world, starting in Santa Monica in 2014. We were in Austin in 2016, Toronto in 2018 and the twice re-scheduled Washington DC conference is still waiting to happen as we broadcast this, due to COVID. Since the pandemic and the era of AA Zoom, December 5th, 2020 was our first online gathering and June 19th, 2021, we enjoyed another 1st: The European ICSAA. This session is one of over ten meetings/panels that happened in two Zoom rooms throughout the day of December 11th. The 2021 International Conference of Secular AA, December 11 2021, presents a third decade of the 21st century contemporary update from our 80+ year old text, Alcoholics Anonymous. From "The Doctor's Opinion" to "A Vision for You," we take to heart how the book wraps up: "... the book is meant to be suggestive only. We realize that we know only a little." And as hinted at, more has been disclosed about AA life. Our Zoom conference spent some time looking at the history of the writing of AA's first book. We spent more time looking at AA today, unabashed and in our own words. the Big Book's "A Family Afterward" closes with three simple precepts that stand up to the test of time: First Things FirstLive And Let LiveEasy Does ItThe chapter starts with a stereotype of a married, male heterosexual, all-America drunk. Today's talks don't aim to throw stones at our quaint 1939 writings, nor are we trying to create a new stereotype. Instead, we offer a sample, one sample of multi-generational alcohol use disorder and recovery in AA, starting with Penny who sobered up as a young mom in 1968, followed by her daughter and son-in-law, both in long-term recovery. Others in this recording, from ICSAA 2021, share their present-day family experiences with us and reflect on the stories so generously shared from our panelists. Jay Stinnett is a researcher and historian, a co-founder of AA History Symposium, the author of Loving Sober and is currently writing a book about Bill W from 1950 until his death in 1971. Jay reflects: “What I think AA needs today, is not more parrots, but more philosophers. I've read hundreds and hundreds of letters written by Bill to fellow AA members. Never once did he say, ‘Your problem is X and your answer is in Chapter so-and-so, read page blah, blah, blah, in Alcoholics Anonymous; that's where you'll find your answer.' What Bill - who wrote the book we quote - did, was to draw upon on his own personal struggles, and relate to the other member's problem. He never sent his fellow sufferer to the book for answers; he related to them with his own personal experience. through storytelling”Since finding sobriety in 1979, Jay continues to thirst for the opportunity to explore and share the transformative experience of 12-Step recovery. This is the full opening ceremony and meeting of the 60th International AA conference held in San Diego in 1995. There was a lot of pomp and circumstance at the beginning of this recording (about 40 min worth). I think Im correct that the vast majority of you wont be interested in that. So I took the first 40 min of the event and moved it to the end of the recording so you go right into the speakers. For those of you interested in hearing the sobriety countdown the procession and entrance of all the countries in attendance keep listening after the closing prayer, its all there. There were also a number of silent moments and I removed a good amount of that as well. The full attendance of the conference was 56,000. A little footnote: I am being a little self indulgent with this one since I was at this meeting and it was truly remarkable sitting in the baseball stadium with 47,972 other AA members. He is telling the story of what happened in the early days of AA's formation. This recording was awful but cleaned up remarkably well, keep in mind however, it was recorded 72 years ago. Please take this in your heart; some will, some won't, So we bless them! and set them free, if they love us they will be back. You're one of the doers and shakers that makes a difference in AA. We keep Gods train alive and well. He is the principal we are His agents, He is the father we are His children, most good ideas are simple. I am asking you; Yes you!, take this program to your generation, if you pray and ask the father to put put a wet one next to you God will do it, they are ready and you can do it they're asking you for their help because alcohol, drugs and life has beaten them to a pulp! they are ready! Thank God. They are ready as only the dying can be! God's blessings on you rummy!

This is not a meeting so choose another episode if you need that right now. This is one for the AA history buffs, it is a speak by Sister Ignatia (a very early AA supporter) about Dr Bob. I have no idea where or when this was recorded, it sounds like she might of been a guest speaker at a meeting. The was fairly bad but cleaned up quite well and its an easy listen. This one is not an AA meeting, so if you need one pick a different episode. This is an interview conducted by an unknown AA member with James H a member of the Oxford Group (and AA) at the time Bill W was also a member. He was 90 years old at the time of the interview and is described as the last surviving member that worked with Bill W within the Oxford Group in the 1930s. This was a phone interview recorded in Feb of 1996 and it had one of the nastiest hums I have yet had to deal with in a recording, I was able to remove it and clean it up but the recording does sound slightly hollow and as a result and you may need to adjust the volume a bit as it progresses. Sackvilel M from Dublin Ireland got sober in 1947 and passed away 1979. He was the author of the story in the big book called "The Career Officer". At the time of this speak held in Huston Texas at an unknown time he was sober just over 9 years. He tells his own story and the story of how AA started in Ireland, he was its 6th member. Ebby T is the man Bill W referred to as his sponsor, he is also the man that introduced Bill to the Oxford group, eventually leading to the formation of AA. Ebby had a tumultuous path in sobriety, regardless he remained a lifelong friend of Bill W. He tells some of the story about the formation of AA. If you have any interest there is a pretty good book about him: "Ebby: The Man Who Sponsored Bill W." It is available HERE He is followed by Icky S another early member of AA. This was recorded in Kansas City in 1960 and for an old recording its very good. I did make a couple of small edits, I pulled the volume way down on the applause because it was painfully harsh and cut the length of some it as well. This episode features a conversation with Bob K., author of Key Players in AA History. The conversation includes a discussion of AA co-founder Bill W., the first women in AA, and some of the common misunderstanding's of the AA founding mythology. We took calls from listeners who asked questions about the Steps, inconsistencies in the Big Book, and sponsorship. Every Friday night at 7:00 PM Central, Angela and John host a live stream on the AA Beyond Belief YouTube Channel. We will have a topic to discuss and take questions from the chatroom in YouTube and from callers to our toll-number.
This sounds a bit fuzzy for the first 4 min then it clears right up. This one is a bit of AA history and a bit of nostalgia for your podcaster since I was at this meeting. In 1995 AA held its 60th Anniversary Conference in San Diego California with 56,000 people in attendance. The theme for the convention was A.A. Everywhere – Anywhere. It was the very first time many Eastern European countries had been able to attend an international AA event including Russia. This meeting features members speaking about their first encounter with AA and the founding of AA in multiple Eastern Europe countries and in Russia. Jim B from San Diego CA got to AA in Jan of 1938 and he is speaking at an unknown event in June of 1957, this is a great talk with a lot of AA history and a bit of his story. This recording had a really nasty hum I was able to remove, but as you might guess its not the best quality being from 1957 that being said its listenable and I think worth the slightly harsh sound. This episode of Sober Cast is a bit of AA history, if you need to hear a meeting please pick a different episode, this is more accurately described as a bit of AA spoken history, a 1962 recording of Gene C who was 40 years sober at the time. He is speaking about the topic I dont hear much about anymore, the “Four Absolutes” of Alcoholics Anonymous. The four absolutes were considered yardsticks in earliest days of the recovery program and come from the Oxford Group. If you would like to learn a bit more about them this is a good starting point (http://silkworth.net/pages/aahistory/fourabsolutes1.php). As the saying goes, "take what you need, and leave the rest". This episode of Sober Cast is not an AA speaker, if you need to hear a meeting please pick a different episode, this is a bit of AA history. The June 24th episode of Sober Cast was Bill B telling his story, he was the author of the screenplay for the 1989 movie My Name is Bill W., as the author of the screenplay he spent considerable time interviewing Lois W. the wife of Bill W. This Sober Cast consists of the three hours of interviews that he did with Lois regarding her life with Bill and the formation AA . It is a really excellent quality recording of Lois speaking in great detail about her life before and after Bill got sober and became the co-founder of AA. My thanks to all of you that emailed and requested we add this to the podcast. If you happen to be in the PNW. This is not an AA meeting so if you need to hear a meeting just now please choose another Sober Cast Episode. For the AA history buffs, this is a phone interview with Henrietta Seiberling the woman that arranged the first meeting between founders Bill W. and Bob S. I was unable to find any context but it is a 1971 Interview with her son John Seiberling, she passed away in 1979. This picks up having already started and ends abruptly with the phone being hung up mid sentence (I assume accidently).
