The picture of your grandmother holding your baby. The lifesaver candies that remind you of Grandpa. The empty chair at Christmas dinner. The holidays magnify grief in ways that send you straight to the kitchen at midnight, eating to fill a void that food can never actually fill. If you've lost someone close to you and the holidays feel impossible—caught between wanting to honor happy memories while drowning in sadness—you're navigating something most people won't talk about. We've been conditioned like Pavlov's dogs to associate food with love, celebration, and connection. When someone dies, especially around the holidays, those associations become a tangled mess that feels impossible to unravel without abandoning the memories altogether. This week, I'm breaking down what's really happening when grief and food become intertwined during the holidays. You'll discover why your brain defaults to emotional eating when you miss someone (hint: it's pure conditioning, not a character flaw), learn the difference between honoring someone's memory and using food to avoid feeling sad, and hear practical examples of how real families have transformed grief into meaningful traditions that don't require eating your feelings. I'll share the "Mike and Hazel Bowie" story from my own family and how one client processes her father's passing through daddy-daughter photo time instead of emotional eating. Ready to stop letting grief sabotage your health goals? Join my Conquer Emotional Eating class where you'll get real tools to navigate the holidays without using food to fill emotional voids. Check it out HERE Plus, my January class on making goals without beating yourself up starts January 9th—because this year can actually be different. "These five words changed everything: It All Starts With You." Trent Shelton June is Men's Mental Health Month, and on our platform, that means leaning into the tough conversations—asking the hard questions that may be uncomfortable, but are necessary for real change. Sometimes, all it takes is one honest moment, one powerful story, to shift a mindset or spark a breakthrough. In this special episode, we sit down with former NFL player turned motivational force and social media phenomenon, Trent Shelton, for a raw, honest, and deeply necessary dialogue about the emotional struggles many men face behind closed doors. Joined by Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder, and Fred Taylor, Trent shares his powerful journey—from chasing NFL dreams to losing his sense of self, battling depression, and ultimately rediscovering purpose through pain. He opens up about the crushing pressure to appear strong, the stigma around vulnerability, and how real strength lies not in silence, but in healing. Trent recounts the darkest moment in his life—when he nearly gave up—and how one glimmer of hope helped him fight his way back. Together, the guys chat about life after sports, identity crises, the importance of mental health, and how Trent transformed his lowest point into a movement with his powerful message: “It's Rehab Time.” Inspired by the tragic loss of a close friend to suicide, Trent turned pain into purpose, creating a platform for healing and growth. The episode takes an even more personal turn as Channing opens up about grieving the loss of his father, Fred reflects on the weight of quiet moments, and Ryan shares his thoughts on life's next chapter. The conversation is unfiltered, vulnerable, and incredibly moving—a testament to the power of speaking truth, facing pain, and finding strength through faith, family, and brotherhood. Whether you're an athlete, a father, or a man struggling in silence—this conversation is for you. Is there a way to navigate grief and loss more effectively? Is it possible to reclaim your life and find peace amidst the pain? In today's episode, I'm joined by Grief Transformation Coach and Founder of Handling Grief, Ghulam Fernandes. Ghulam learned the hard way that time doesn't heal all. The unexpectedly painful loss of her brother made her realize she hadn't dealt with her mother's death, who passed away when she was only 13. Looking for answers to deal with the unresolved grief from her mother's death and facing her own mortality, she discovered an action-based, step-by-step process for handling grief, which, eventually, she used as a pillar to create her unique Handling Grief Programme. Throughout this episode, Ghulam and I discuss the differences between traditional grief counseling and Ghulam's approach, the lessons she learned from her grief experiences, and the importance of recognizing that every grief journey is unique. Ghulam also shares practical tips on supporting someone through grief, how to avoid unhelpful comments, and why practical help is much better than saying: "let me know if you need anything." Ghulam also shares her thoughts on resilience and finding happiness after loss, why it is crucial to recognize grief's long-term effects, the significance of staying in touch and providing ongoing support to grievers, and more.Tune in to episode 226 and find out how to regain peace, productivity, passion for life, and a sense of purpose after grief. Grappling with the harsh reality of a terminal illness diagnosis within a loved one, my sister Jessica and I open up about our feelings of grief and helplessness. Our memories of our shared childhood and personal faith become balm as we traverse these waters, shedding light on the deep and often unspoken impact family dynamics have on our emotional response. As we navigate this journey, we encounter the unspoken 'rankings' of grief within the family, a delicate topic we further unpack.Switching gears, Jessica and I share our contrasting social tendencies, and how these are reflected in our parenting strategies. As the social butterfly of the duo, Jessica generously shares her insights into managing our kids' social lives, while I, the homebody, delve into the unique challenges and rewards of my prefer-to-stay-home tendencies. As we conclude, we share words of comfort and encouragement to remind you of the enduring power of love in the face of grief, and the importance of embracing every moment with our loved ones. In this heartfelt conversation, we hope to offer solace, a sense of shared experience, and perhaps even a few sparks of joy. Sara gets raw and real on the week of the anniversary of the death of her mother. We all go through major transitions that shake us to the core, and Sara speaks of her own divorce and the loss of her mom. She connects it to Identity and core values and the importance of making sure those are up to date and used as guidelines for maneuvering thru hard changes. Sara talks of her Divorce as a major transition, and how she had to sit with her core values and make sure she named them and acted according to them. She suggests an every 6 month inventory of who you are, and what your values are. Her's include integrity, love, honesty, communication, relationships, and health. Sara chose to climb a mountain and watch a beautiful sunrise to honor her mom not being here and to honor herself as well. She needed to get quiet and meditate and be in nature to really go thru the grief. Sara suggests this as a tool to use: get quiet, whatever way works for you. She takes us thru her Identity shifts now that she is the only woman in her family structure and how that changes her awareness of her role to her dad, her uncle, her kids, etc. It's an honest look at how we handle our identity thru shifts and changes, and how, if we do the work of identifying and re-evaluating, we work through it all in the most beautiful way. Everyone deals with grief. Many ask the question does Jesus care about my loss? Today Pastor Jamie explains to us how Jesus was a man acquainted with grief. He weeps when we weep! Be encouraged as we draw from the deep deep well of God's love, and he heals our pain and sorrows.
We've had some great questions come in recently and we're here to serve. We'll look at a question about worship from Paul Happ and then take on some theological questions in Genesis from Jesse Pipe. Finally, we'll talk about what to do with grief during the holidays. We often talk about the joy of the season, but we rarely help people walk through grief. But before we get there, let's play a game! We're testing our staff's knowledge of Christmas movie quotes. #Redemption #ThePost #2022 #podcast #onlinechurch #churchonline #ChristmasMovies #Quotes #Games #Holidays #Christmas #Grief #Theology #Genesis #UnilateralCovenant #Worship #Bethel #Elevation #Heresy #WorshipWars To support this ministry and help us continue to reach people all around the world click here: https://pushpay.com/g/redemptionchurchmi?src=hpp&r=monthly Connecting people to Jesus for life change...
