Disney's Discovery Island (Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida) This is the story of a place, abandoned in plain sight at Walt Disney World for over two decades. This is the story of Discovery Island. It had a long history before it became Disney property, hosting fruit farmers and hunting enthusiasts and tax delinquents. As part of WDW, the island had goals to be a pirate-themed adventure. Instead, the focus became one of nature preservation and bird conservation. The dusky seaside sparrow went extinct here on Discovery Island. When Animal Kingdom was announced, the writing was on the wall for Discovery Island, and it closed 25 years after its opening. The island remained abandoned, with much rumors and very few insights beyond the trees. Find complete show notes and references for this episode at https://theabandonedcarousel.com/24. C. P. Huntington Collis Potter Huntington was a railroad tycoon involved in the making of the Transcontinental Railroad. One of the engines on his line was named after him: C. P. Huntington. She operated in active train service from 1863 through about 1900, and then began a life on display that still continues in 2019. She's a relic from the Iron Horse steam locomotive era that's inspired one of the most iconic and popular theme park trains around: the miniature C. P. Huntington. Lake Dolores (Rock-A-Hoola) Waterpark Lake Dolores is really three (or four) waterparks in one. Bob and Dolores Byers built America's first waterpark back in the 60s, putting their land to a new use after trying some alfalfa farming. Lake Dolores became known for thrills and danger, drinking, hookups, and anything goes - almost an Action Park of the West. Slides were incredibly eye-catching along the I-15 for this family-run operation. In the late 80s, Byers wanted to retire. He sold the park. It became Rock-a-Hoola Waterpark - America's first waterpark, now in the twentieth century. A modern set of slides were added, as well as a modern 90s retro-50s design. The park suffered from financial mishaps by its investors, as well as costly lawsuits from accidents; in addition, changing attitudes and water rights pressures made the park less feasible. After a short stint as "Discovery Waterpark", the park closed in 2004 for good. In the current, abandoned state, the park is popular among urban explorers and skateboarders. Efforts have been made to restore the park, but they seem unlikely to succeed. Listen, watch, or read at https://theabandonedcarousel.com/16 - it's The Abandoned Carousel. Trinity Loop (Newfoundland) This is a story about an abandoned place, but it's also about so much more than that. This is a story of preservation, what we choose to remember, and what we choose to keep alive in common memory through storytelling. In the early 20th century, Trinity Loop was constructed as a unique solution to a geography problem, connecting the town of Trinity to the rest of the Newfoundland Railway. The loop closed when the rest of the railway was shuttered, but a one-man campaign saved the historical structure from demolition. The Loop gained new life as a small amusement park, including a Ferris wheel, several repurposed train cars, and a miniature train ride around the historic Loop. Trinity Loop Amusement Park was the home of many happy memories until it closed in 2004. Since then, the site has been abandoned, and there are no immediate plans for the Loop despite campaigns from interested locals. Hurricane Igor did significant damage to Newfoundland in 2010, including Trinity Loop. Much still remains on site, and the Loop has gained a new popularity as a place for unique social media photoshoots. The Abandoned Planes of Villamarzana Gigi Stecca, a brewer and entrepreneur, assembled two planes in the middle of rural Italy, reportedly inspired by the Italian seniors who desired to board an airplane. "The Planes" operated as a pizza restaurant for many years until local governmental permit battles got the best of it. Today, the faux Renaissance art, the DC-6 airplane, the TU-134-A airplane, and the August Super Ranger helicopter sit in abandoned glory, waiting for a new investor to come along. Joyland Park (Wichita, KS) - Part 2 This week, I finish the second half of the Joyland Park story. Joyland came under new management, and the park began a series of ups and downs much like its famous rollercoaster prior to the park's ultimate closure. There are good moments (new rides, like the Log Jam and Whacky Shack) and bad moments (deaths, injuries, catastrophic floods, lawsuits). In its abandoned state, the park became a haven for urbex enthusiasts. Ultimately, a series of fires destroyed much of the park's infrastructure. However, the park still remains a fond memory for locals, and physical pieces of the park can still be found today. Joyland Park (Wichita, KS) - Part 1 This week on The Abandoned Carousel, I'm talking about Joyland. In its abandoned state, Joyland is infamous for delightfully creepy pictures. But the story of Joyland goes much deeper than that - this is a story about communities. This family-run park goes back decades and holds a special place in the heart of many people who grew up in Kansas. In part one of my two-part series on Joyland, I talk about the Ottaway family and their special miniature steam train that provided the impetus for their amusement parks, as well as about the early history of Ottaway ownership at Joyland. Yes, I even talk about Porky the Paper Eater. Find complete show notes and references for this episode at https://theabandonedcarousel.com/6. Magic Forest Amusement Park in Lake George, NY The Magic Forest is a 50-year-old park in the Adirondacks. Formerly home to a host of kiddie rides scavenged from other parks, as well as over 1000 fiberglass figures, the park is on the verge of change. It reopens for the 2019 season under new management: most of the fiberglass figures are gone, and there's a new component to the park now called "Dino Roar Valley". Will the charms of the park survive these changes? Learn more about the complete history of the Magic Forest this week on The Abandoned Carousel. You'll hear about diving horses, Snow White, and the Great Danbury Fair. Find complete show notes and references for this episode at https://theabandonedcarousel.com/5.
