We wrap up our epic 4-day Disneyland adventure with a jam-packed finale full of iconic attractions, creative eats, and unforgettable vibes. We kick things off by blasting into Hyperspace Mountain and conquering the classic Matterhorn Bobsleds before fueling up with a legendary Disneyland breakfast chimichanga from Ship to Shore Marketplace. Our Downtown Disney detour leads to a shopping spree and a wild bite of the viral Pickle Corn Dog at Blue Ribbon Corn Dogs. The evening shifts to lounge hopping with stops at Broken Spell and Trader Sam's, where we try tiki cocktails, pork gyoza, and poke bowls. We hop aboard the Disneyland Monorail back to Tomorrowland, soak up the nighttime magic with popcorn, Dapper Dans, and shopping, and then wrap up with a Blue Bayou dinner—complete with crab cakes, filet mignon, and a refreshing mint julep. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, "The Wildest Ride In The Wilderness", has been delighting Disney fans at Disneyland since 1979, with other versions created for Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris. Imagineer Tony Baxter, carrying forward an idea from Imagineer Marc Davis called Thunder Mesa and Western River Expedition, led a team to create this pivot storytelling roller coaster, setting a new standard for Disney mountain attractions (previous ones included Space Mountain and Matterhorn Bobsleds) that have resulted in such iconic attractions as Expedition Everest and Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars.   In this episode, we discuss the history, story, mythology, lore, and Imagineering details for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and Disneyland Paris. Disney Conversations

Hello Tourists! On this adventure of Disney Conversations, we take a look at the differences and similarities of Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom as compared to Walt's original park Disneyland! For this discussion, Magical Matthew is joined by Tour Guides Janette Pellegrini and Mindy Muir! If you are planning a trip to one of these parks, and you have never been, we hope you find this information useful. Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom and Disneyland Park in Anaheim are two of the most popular theme parks in the world. While they share some similarities, they also have some significant differences. Here are some key comparisons between the two: 1.    Size and Layout: Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom is significantly larger than Disneyland Park in terms of overall size and number of attractions. The Magic Kingdom covers an area of 107 acres and has 47 rides and attractions. Disneyland Park, on the other hand, covers only 85 acres and has 40 attractions. The layout of the two parks is also different, with the Magic Kingdom arranged in a circular pattern around the iconic Cinderella Castle, while Disneyland Park is more linear in design, with its entrance on one end and Sleeping Beauty Castle on the other. 2.    Unique Attractions: While both parks share some attractions, such as Pirates of the Caribbean and It's a Small World, there are also many unique attractions to each park. Magic Kingdom has several attractions not found at Disneyland, including the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train roller coaster, the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover, and the classic Carousel of Progress. Meanwhile, Disneyland Park has its own exclusive attractions, such as the Indiana Jones Adventure, the Matterhorn Bobsleds, and the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage. 3.    Dining Options: Both parks offer a variety of dining options, ranging from quick-service snack stands to sit-down restaurants. However, Disneyland Park has a slightly larger variety of dining options, with unique restaurants such as the Blue Bayou, located inside the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, and the Cafe Orleans, which serves New Orleans-inspired cuisine. 4.    Atmosphere: The overall atmosphere of each park is also different. Magic Kingdom has a more grand, regal feel with its ornate castle and spacious Main Street, USA. Disneyland Park, on the other hand, has a more whimsical and nostalgic feel, with attractions like the original It's a Small World and classic characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/matthew-wallace9/message

Guests visit the island by traveling on a motorized raft which is piloted by a Disneyland Cast Member. The short 3D Jamboree features the famous Mouseketeers and their leader Jimmy Dodd. The presentation includes the animated shorts Melody and Working for Peanuts all in 3D. Storybook Land Canal Boats (originally known as Canal Boats of the World in 1955) features 13 boats (powered by outboard motors) afloat in 465,000 gallons of water.1958:Disneyland's Columbia ship opens on the Rivers of America. It is a full-scale version of the first ship to carry the American flag around the world. It actually was built in large part from the plans for the HMS Bounty (of mutiny fame). Disney's shipbuilders couldn't find plans for the original Columbia, so they relied heavily on those of Captain Bligh's ship, which had similar dimensions. It has cost $300,000 to build. Fowler's Harbor (named after Admiral Joseph Fowler, who helped to build Disneyland) is also officially opened on this day to dock the new ship. A dedication ceremony takes place with Fowler and Walt Disney himself in attendanceThe Disneyland attraction Alice in Wonderland debuts in Fantasyland. Actress, Kathryn Beaumont, voice of Alice in the 1951 animated movie, provides the voice for the dark ride. It follows the path of the movie, as the riders (as Alice) follow the White Rabbit down the Rabbit Hole into Wonderland. Disneyland's first "Alice" attraction - Mad Tea Party (a spinning tea cup ride), has been operating since the park's debut in July 19551959:Three major attractions are christened at Disneyland on this day:The first urban monorail system in the U.S., the Disneyland-Alweg Monorail System, begins operation in California's Disneyland. The two Mark I trains run on a .8 mile track around Tomorrowland. Walt Disney and U.S. Vice president Nixon and their families are on hand for the dedication of the "Highway in the Sky." (In June 1961, the Monorail will become a true transportation link instead of just a sightseeing ride. With an extended 2 1/2 mile track, Disneyland Hotel guests will be able to board the Monorail at the hotel and begin their park visit in Tomorrowland.)Also on this day at Disneyland, the Matterhorn Mountain with its Matterhorn Bobsleds, opens. Modeled after the Matterhorn, a real mountain in the Swiss Alps, it is the first roller coaster to use cylindrical rails and urethane wheels (which will become standard in the roller coaster industry). At 147 feet tall, the Matterhorn contains 500 tons of structural steel. The ride consists of two separate tracks that run somewhat parallel to each other for much of the ride, intertwining and eventually deviating from each other at the loading areas. The Submarine Voyage ride is officially dedicated on this day as well in Tomorrowland (although it has has been open since June 6). The attraction has cost about $2.5 million to create. The Nautilus and 7 sister submarines - the Triton, Sea Wolf, Skate, Skipjack, George Washington, Patrick Henry, and Ethan Allen allow 38 Disneyland guests at a time to take their own voyage to the North Pole. For the dedication of the new Submarine Voyage attraction the opening ceremonies feature eight live mermaids performing a synchronized swimming ballet in the lagoon.Mrs. Mildred Nelson, wife of the chief machinist on the the first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus, helps Walt Disney christen the sub D-301, appropriately named Nautilus. Also taking place at 1:30 is a special dedication parade specifically designedfor this day's festivities. The parade and all the day's events are filmed for an ABC television special to be titled Kodak Presents Disneyland ’59.1967:The Club 33 restaurant (for members-only) opens at 33 Royal Street, in New Orleans Square at Disneyland. It is comprised of two dining rooms and several adjoining areas, all of which hold a wide array of magnificent antiques and original works of art. A secret feature of the theme park, the entrance of the private club is located next to the Blue Bayou Restaurant at "33 Royal Street" with the entrance recognizable by an ornate address plate with the number 33 engraved on it.1971:The All American College Band performs for the very first time at Disneyland. The All-American College Band, made up of musicians from colleges all across the United States, will perform for 11 weeks throughout the summer (and become a yearly tradition).1972:The Main Street Electric Parade kicks off at Disneyland for the very first time. The floats include the Blue Fairy, Casey Junior Circus Train, Alice In Wonderland, Chinese Dragon, Dumbo’s Circus, Cinderella’s Ball, "it’s a small world", and the American Finale.1974:Disney World’s "Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue" dinner show debuts in Pioneer Hall at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. Created as a college workshop summer production only, guest response will be so positive that Walt Disney World entertainment will continue the show with a permanent professional cast at the end of the 1974 summer! 1975:Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln returns to Disneyland after being replaced in 1973 with The Walt Disney Story.1983:The Disneyland parade Flights of Fantasy, which celebrates the opening of the New Fantasyland, debuts.1999:Disney's animated feature Tarzan premieres in the U.S. at the El Capitan Theater in HollywoodThe computer controlled sign that welcomes guests to the main entrance of Disneyland's parking lot is removed. Its site will be absorbed into the new California Adventure area. (This is only the second sign to greet guests as they entered Disneyland in the park's 44 year history. The original marquee, erected in 1958, had letters that had to be changed by hand!) Disney's 37th animated feature Tarzan is generally released in the U.S.2010:Toy Story 3 has its worldwide premiere at Taormina Film Fest in Italy. (It will premiere in the U.S. the following day.)2012:An expanded and spruced-up Carnation Café debuts on Main Street, U.S.A., in Disneyland park.A 4.1 earthquake in Yorba Linda that shake parts of Southern California on this evening adds a little extra unexpected excitement to the star-studded red carpet opening of the new Cars Land at the Disneyland Resort.Disneyland Resort caps off its $1 billion renovation of Disney California Adventure with the public opening of Cars Land and the new Buena Vista Street. Based on the Disney-Pixar movie Cars, Cars Land is the largest piece of a five-year expansion at Disney California Adventure Park, adding 12 acres of new attractions to the theme park. It is a recreation of the fictional town of Radiator Springs, featuring Luigi's Flying Tires, which flies riders over what looks like a giant air hockey table; Mater's Junkyard Jamboree, which swings riders in trailers in a "tow-si-do" square dance; and Radiator Springs Racers, which takes riders through a race through a mountain range.2016:Finding Dory, a 3D computer-animated comedy adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures, hits U.S. theaters. The revamped Soarin’ flight simulator rides at Disney California Adventure and Epcot open to guests. Now called Soarin' Around the World, new scenes include a flight over Switzerland’s Matterhorn, the Arctic Ocean with a leaping whale, the Sydney Opera House in Australia, Germany’s Neuschwanstein castle, a herd of African elephants, the Great Wall of China, Egyptian pyramids, India’s Taj Mahal, hot air balloons in Monument Valley on the Arizona-Utah border, outrigger boats off Fiji, the Iguazu waterfalls on the Argentina-Brazil border and France’s Eiffel Tower. Disneyland is supposed to the happiest place on earth, but it has been the most tragic to some since 1964.  According to intouchweekly.com, "In late July 1955, a Disneyland Railroad operator switched tracks before the back of the train had safely crossed into the station — a mistake that sent the last car of the Retlaw 2 train onto a separate set of tracks. The caboose swung to the side and collided with a concrete divider before derailing. Fortunately, no one was hurt. The worker fled the scene and never returned., After that, Disneyland had no major incidents for nearly a decade. The good streak ended in May 1964, when 15-year-old Mark Maples from Long Beach, CA, stood up and was thrown from the top of the Matterhorn Bobsleds. He landed on an adjacent ledge, fractured his ribs and skull, and died three days later." But it seems that the tragedy doesn't stop there due to a series of deaths, derailments, drownings, fights, and suicides that have followed and made its way onto the park's property throughout the decades.   The paranormal aftermath, is it possible that the spectres the staff and park goers have witnessed may be linked to deaths on the park's grounds?  Or could they be connected to the remains of the loved ones that family members would disperse on certain rides?  Find out as we sit down and take a virtual haunted walking tour with former Disney Cast member, Mitchell Ralston.

In this episode I interview Disney Legend and Imagineer Bob Gurr about his incredible career working for Walt Disney. We discuss Bob's early life as a young boy through his time at WED Enterprises working directly for Walt Disney on the construction of Disneyland. Bob is often quoted as saying..."If it moves on wheels at Disneyland, I probably designed it." That quote is quite accurate considering Bob's impressive resume as designer of such iconic attraction ride vehicles as: the Monorail, Matterhorn Bobsleds, Disneyland Fire Engine, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride cars, and the OmniMover ride vehicle system, which appears most notoriously in the 'Doom Buggies' Haunted Mansion ride vehicles.  Bob is not only a Disney Legend, his career is legendary but it did not end when Bob officially left Disney in 1981. In fact, Bob not only continued to work as Designer for many years after leaving Disney, he is still working today!  Be sure to check back for a Part 2 of this podcast interview in which Bob and I will further explore his time at Disney and beyond.  You can learn more about Bob Gurr and his incredible life by visiting:  BobGurr.com  Bob also conducts Bus Tours in Southern California of historic and iconic locations that are significant to Walt Disney history. Bob Gurr's career is one many Disney fans know well. After being hired by Walt Disney to join WED Enterprises in 1954, Bob went on to build vehicles, ride systems, and other designs for a wide range of classic Disneyland and Walt Disney World attractions. For example, Bob created the vehicles for Autopia, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the Haunted Mansion, and the Ford Magic Skyway. He also designed the original version of the Disneyland and Walt Disney World monorails, the mechanics for Walt's Abraham Lincoln animatronic (as seen in Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln at the 1964 World's Fair), the omnimover ride system, and the world's first tubular steel roller coaster—Matterhorn Bobsleds. After concluding his career with Disney in 1981, Bob went on to design over 150 projects for Universal Studios, Steven Spielberg, Michael Jackson, and more. For his contributions to the theme park industry, Bob has been honored with the Disney Legends award, his own window on Main Street USA at Disneyland, and the Themed Entertainment Association's lifetime achievement award, which also places him on the judging committee for the association's annual theme park awards. Bob is still very active today at the age of 88. His current projects include: Waltland: a bus tour around Los Angeles to visit important sites in Walt Disney and Bob Gurr history. Fandom Productions: Bob Gurr merchandise signed by the legend himself. "Bob Gurr: Legendary Imagineer": Bob Gurr's autobiography, published in 2019. Harriet Burns was known as Walt Disney's First Lady of Imagineering, not only because of her contributions to the organization but also because she truly was the first woman hired at WDI in a creative capacity. Harriet is a Disney Legend and even has a window on Main Street U.S.A. at Disneyland. Working directly with Walt Disney, Harriet helped to create many of the classic attractions we know and love today, including Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room, The Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Matterhorn Bobsleds, the Carousel of Progress, and Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. She also built the robin that Mary Poppins sings "Spoonful of Sugar" to in the original film. Harriet passed away in 2008, but her legacy still lives on today. In this episode, I have the distinct privilege of interviewing Haley Clair, the granddaughter of Harriet Burns. Haley and I chat about her grandmother's life, legacy, work at Walt Disney Imagineering, and interactions with Walt Disney. Which of Harriet Burn's creations do you love most? The Mad Chatters Podcast | Walt Disney World and Around the Disney Universe

2019 marks the 60th anniversary of the very first roller coaster to open at a Disney park: the Matterhorn Bobsleds. Disneyland was open for four years before it got its first coaster, and when the mountain-themed attraction debuted, it was anything but your average, off-the-shelf ride. In fact, it was the first tubular steel coaster in the world! That attraction was the first in an iconic lineup of roller coasters that would eventually be introduced at the U.S. Disney parks, and on this week’s show we work our way chronologically through all 12 of them. Join us and special guest Courtney Guth as we discuss the impact and legacy of the Disney coasters and how we feel each one succeeds as a Disney attraction. Also on episode 212, we review some of our recent meals at Ale & Compass, Liberty Tree Tavern, and Olivia’s Cafe. Plus, we have some fun with the hashtag #DisneyfyDisney by adding Intellectual Properties to original Walt Disney World attractions and restaurants. Come join the fun! Be sure to find Courtney online and let her know you enjoyed hearing her on the show! http://www.attractionchecklist.com - Join John B. deHaas and I as we take the Grand Circle Tour on the Disneyland Railroad!  One of Disneyland's opening day attractions!  Recorded on December 2, 2018. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. It’s time to take a gran circle tour of Disneyland on the Disneyland Railroad.  Disneyland’s website says, “Embark on a relaxing 18-minute scenic journey aboard an authentic steam-powered train around Disneyland Park.”  There are no age or height restrictions to ride the train and the Thrill Level describes the attraction as being Slow, dark and loud.  Before we climb aboard, here are five fast facts about the Disneyland Railroad. Before we begin our mountain climbing adventure, here are five fast facts about Disneyland’s Matterhorn Bobsleds. 1. The Disneyland Railroad began operation on Disneyland’s opening day on July 17, 1955.  In fact, Walt Disney himself pulled the train into Main Street Station that morning on his way to give the park’s opening dedication. 2.  The Railroad features five restored steam locomotives named C.K. Holliday, E.P. Ripley, Ernest Marsh, Fred Gurley and the Ward Kimball,  The first four are named after American locomotive legends, the fifth, the Ward Kimball, is named after the Disney animator who is credited for inspiring Walt Disney’s love of trains.  The older locomotive, the Fred Gurly, was built in August of 1894. 3. One of the most anticipated parts of the Grand Circle Tour is the journey through the Grand Canyon and Primeval World Dioramas.  The Grand Canyon diorama debuted in 1958 and features an amazing background mural painted by Delmer J. Yoakum that is 306 feet long and 34 feet tall.  The Primeval world diorama opened in 1966 and features audio animatronic dinosaurs that were build for the Ford’s Magic Skyway attraction in the 1964 New York World’s Fair. 4. The Railroad features a special train car, the Lilly Belle, named after Walt Disney’s wife Lillian.  It is the last remaining ‘opening day’ car that is still in service, albeit only occasionally.  Guests can pay to ride in the car as part of the separately ticketed Gran Circle Tour.  Sometimes the first 14 guests in line at Main Street Station when the park opens in the morning will get a chance to ride in it as well. 5. On January 11, 2016, the Disneyland Railroad closed for over a year to accommodate construction of Disneyland newest land, Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge. When the train resumed operation on July 29, 2017, the new line line had the trains making a left turn for the first time in the attraction’s history. Now let’s ride the Disneyland Railroad for a Grand Circle Tour of Disneyland.  Along for the ride is John B. deHaas and after we ride we’ll give you our thoughts on this opening day attraction.  This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones, put them on now as we take a ride on the Disneyland Railroad. http://www.attractionchecklist.com - Join John B. deHaas and I as we brave the Matterhorn mountain and ride Disneyland's Matterhorn Bobsleds!  Recorded on July 27, 2018. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. Let’s head to Disneyland to conquer one of the park's many mountains!  It’s time to ride the Matterhorn Bobsleds.  The Disneyland website describes this attraction by saying, "Careen through a snow-capped mountain on a speeding alpine sled while avoiding the clutches of the mythic Abominable Snowman." Guests must be 42” or taller to ride and Fastness and Single Rider options are available for this attraction.  The thrill level describes the Matterhorn Bobsleds as being a Thrill and Water ride with Small Drops that is Dark, Loud and Scary. Before we begin our mountain climbing adventure, here are five fast facts about Disneyland’s Matterhorn Bobsleds. 1.  The Matterhorn Bobsleds opened at Disneyland on June 14, 1959.  Located on the border of Fantasyland and Tomorrowland, the Matterhorn Bobsleds was not officially a part of any land until the 1970s, when the attraction became a permanent part of Fantasyland. 2.  The Matterhorn Bobsleds holds the distinction of being the first tubular steel roller coast in the world. 3. The ride’s famous Abomidable Snowman was given the name Harold by Disney Imagineers when he took up residence in the mountain in the 1970s. 4. On January 5, 2015, the ride began an extensive refurbishment to install new new effects and updated animatronics for Harold.   One of the original Harold figures can now be spotted in the Collectior’s Collection at the Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout attraction at Disney California Adventure 5. Yes, the rumors are true.  There is a basketball hoop inside the Matterhorn.  While not a regulation sized half-court, there is a basketball hoop and playing area in the attraction that is said to have been used by the mountain climber who scaled the mountain regularly to wave at guests down below. And now, let’s ride the Matterhorn Bobsleds.  Along for the ride is John B. deHaas and after we ride, we’ll give you our initial thoughts on this classic attraction.  This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones, put them on now as we are about to experience, the Matterhorn Bobsleds at Disneyland. We started a HashTag this week #BRINGBACKGEORGELAWSON, not for us but for HIM. We feel he deserves for his story to be told. He told us that he's most hurt that he wasn't given a chance to defend himself and more so, the fact that he wasn't able to say goodbye to everyone he Loved seeing in the parks. We encourage you all to check out our social media and the initiative we have taken to get George's Story out there. And we highly encourage you all to join in! Breakfast & Brunch served daily from 7am - 2pm, and Dinner Served 4:30 pm - 10pm. While closed from 2pm - 4:30pm. We also learned this week that Cuties, known for their orange-like clementines, has become the Official Citrus Fruit of the Disneyland Resort. Cuties will be offered as a side in kids' meals at select counter service locations. Additionally, Cuties branding will be introduced at the Disneyland Resort. In Downtown Disney News, Disney confirmed on Wednesday that they have officially pulled the plug on the New Luxury Hotel that was Planned for Downtown Disney. However, the area will remain focused on shopping, dining, and entertainment. No word as of yet on if the old favorites like Rainforest Cafe, ESPN Zone and The Movie Theater will return or if new ones will emerge. As you all know, the new 6,500-space parking structure is currently under construction near the Mickey & Friends structure at the Disneyland Resort. This week we found out that along with the new Parking structure, there will be a new pedestrian bridge over Magic Way. This new bridge will connect visitors from the parking structure—over Magic Way— to the rest of the resort, allowing guests the option to stroll through the Downtown Disney District to the theme parks' Main Entrance. In addition, the new bridge eliminates the foot traffic crossing the street at Disneyland Drive and Magic Way, providing not only convenience but also greater pedestrian safety and better traffic circulation. Set to be completed next year, these parking and transportation enhancements—along with other existing parking options throughout the resort area—are designed to dramatically improve parking and traffic flow. The new parking structure is expected to significantly speed up guest arrival by providing a 60 percent increase in the number of access lanes and by adding parking capacity on the west side of the resort. In addition, the tram boarding area will be reconfigured to enhance the transportation experience for guests parking at both the new structure and Mickey & Friends. Coming this Tuesday October 16th - Trader Sam's at the Disneyland Hotel will open at 7am for the Exclusive Hatbox Ghost Tiki Mug that will be available for purchase...So I suggest you get there early and I'm sure it will go fast! Hello my friends and welcome to one of the most exciting shows in the history of the Disney Avenue Podcast. Today’s guest is no stranger to the Disney community and has always been a man on the move. For nearly 40 years, he has helped move countless Disney theme park guests aboard vehicles and ride conveyances of his own design. As he’s often stated, “If it moves on wheels at Disneyland, I probably designed it.” And he certainly has. He has developed more than 100 designs for attractions ranging from Autopia and Matterhorn Bobsleds to the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Monorails. He is the one and only Bob Gurr. Bob has an amazing new documentary coming out soon titled, Bob Gurr: Turning Dreams into Reality which we’ll be discussing among other highlights from his storied career working with Walt. You can learn more about the film and how to buy yourself a copy by clicking HERE. And, as if having Bob on the Disney Avenue Podcast wasn’t enough, legendary former Imagineer Tim Delaney, who was our very first guest here on the show, is joining us today as a very special cohost. Teaming up with a big named former Imagineer like Tim Delaney to interview the great Bob Gurr has not only created a spectacular show for our listeners to experience, but has been a dream come true. And so friends, it is with great pleasure and excitement to welcome Bob Gurr to the Disney Avenue Podcast.
