Today it's a delight to have my friend Crystal Caudill back on Book Talk. The last time I saw her was at the Christy Award Ceremony in November when we were both finalists in the Short Form category for our novellas in We Three Kings, the collection we wrote along with Angela Strong for Kregel. It was such fun celebrating with her when she won! Today we are talking about her latest novel Written in Secret, a romantic mystery set in the Gilded Age. This novel is a hoot with plenty of fun moments and intrigue. The balance is really impeccable. I also think you'll enjoy our conversation about how this story grew out of a sentence in another book. It really is a madcap adventure in some ways. Enjoy the journey and the fun!Connect with Crystal CaudillFacebook | Pinterest | InstagramWant to watch this interview? Bible Readings: Ps 98, Matt 2:1‑15 Last Sunday’s sermon: “Hark! We Three Kings of Orient Are” with Greg Olliffe, part of our series “Hark! Carols of the King”. The post Hark! We Three Kings of Orient Are appeared first on All Saints North Epping.
Who doesn't like the old, familiar hymn with the catchy tune “We Three Kings of Orient are”? It conjures up images of bejewelled noblemen riding on stately ornamented camels, each with a gift in their hands. Well, the real story from the Bible is a lot different from that. Yes, there were “wise men” or magi that actually made that arduous journey in search for a King, a Messiah. But their quest was for something far deeper than to see the latest heir to the throne. They had heart longings to personally meet the Saviour promised by God. It was worth it for them to leave their homes and head off in long, hard journey until they found Him. And find Him they did! What a joyous day it was for these men! Those that stayed behind in unbelief missed the greatest discovery of their lives! And how many are doing the same today?
In "We Three Kings" we hear about magi coming to visit Jesus and present him with gifts. What seems like a very random story leads us to learn about God's perfect plans and the prophecies that foretold them. In the seeming randomness of modern life, what is God planning for you?
The nativity story around the wise men is something we are familiar with. We see images of three kings in so many nativity scenes. We hear in the carol “We Three Kings” about three kings who follow the star. But what does Matthew actually tell us about this part of the story? When we get into it, the story is really about an undetermined number of wise, learned, knowledgeable scientific astrologers who travel a long distance to worship a child from another nation. But why? Why do that? Because they know this child is special. He is important to them, as outsiders. He is important to His own nation. He is important for the whole world. And their response is to worship Him. Their story points us to who it is that is worthy of worship, and how to express that worship.
With Christmas just a few days away, Pastor Josh joins us to share on We Three Kings from our Christmas Playlist Series.
In this episode, we look at the history of the "We Three Kings" (or Wise Men) during the Celebration of Epiphany and told during the Season of Christmas. In our work task, we examine the concept of traveling in our daily tasks, traveling to get food, or for a longer trip. This movement helps us in our physical training, through the lifting of our gold (weights), and moving basics to travel forward. In our mental training, using incense and myrrh to bless our dojo and aid in our meditation to become more spiritual in our training.
We finally review all the films from Thanksgiving Weekend, and there were definitely too many! We kick-off with the theater-released Amazon film, Red One. To keep the chaos somewhat manageable we go by network, starting with Hallmark (A 90s Christmas, Holiday Touchdown, Christmas Quest), Netflix (Our Little Secret), Lifetime (BeBe Winans' We Three Kings), and Great American Christmas/GAC (I Heard the Bells, A Cinderella Christmas Ball, Home Sweet Christmas).
And you thought YOU were gonna have a lot of holiday company! Poor Mary, who's only given birth a week or so ago, now faces this onslaught of unexpected visitors in today's episode. We'll find out who exactly all those folks are, their connection to one of the most powerful families in Europe, and what's up with the peacock. Pretty sure that wasn't one of the animals at the Nativity... Today we look at the profound truth that Jesus is the eternal King who never ceases to reign by connecting verses in the book of Matthew to the carol “We Three Kings.” The story of the wisemen and Herod's response to Jesus' birth are two completely different responses to Christ's kingship. True fulfillment comes only through submitting to Christ's eternal kingship, not through pursuing temporary satisfaction to other “kings” of our lives (career, relationships, success). The three kings. The wise men. The magi. They're the supporting cast in many a Nativity scene...the subject of several postage stamps and greeting cards...the subject of that classic Christmas song. Who were they? Where were they from? Why did they traverse afar following yonder star? What was with the gold, frankincense, and myrrh? Were they even real? And does it matter? Today, professor and author Eric Vanden Eykel joins Brian to tell the story of these mysterious figures. To kick off the fourth season of “Hark! The stories behind our favorite Christmas carols” we're embarking on an adventure to learn about an American-born carol that features some classic nativity characters—figures that, though very familiar to us, we know little about. It's a Christmas song that begins on a plodding, somber note and erupts into a thrilling epiphany. We're exploring “We Three Kings.” To help us understand who the magi were—at least from the perspective of Matthew's Gospel— host Maggi Van Dorn invites Eric Vanden Eykel, author of The Magi: Who They Are, How They've Been Remembered, and Why They Still Fascinate and Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Ferrum College. The magi's gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh have long been viewed as symbolic of Jesus' kingship, divinity and humanity, but how were these two herbs used in antiquity? Maggi learns about their earliest uses from Emiliana Patrick, a fourth year doctoral student in Classical Chinese Medicine at Daoist Traditions College in Asheville, North Carolina. To trace the star the magi followed, Maggi turns to the director of the Vatican's observatory, Guy Consolmagno, S.J., a Jesuit brother. Finally, to better appreciate the musical genius of the carol's composition, she speaks with ContraForce, a folk metal band known for their eclectic range of musical styles at contra dances, who specially created an instrumental rendition of “We Three Kings,”specially for “Hark!,” that is woven throughout the episode. The music featured in this episode is courtesy of ContraForce, Michael Logozar, Cynthia Boener, Dante Bucci, the Lee siblings of the Seasons band, Jeff Black and Lotos Nile Music. We Three Kings (2 Kings 3) by Faith Family Church Oak Grove
There are few stories in the scriptures as familiar to our imaginations, as the story of the wise men. We sing about them in Christmas carols like "We Three Kings." We set them up each year with our nativity scenes. However, given how the story is talked about and portrayed, one has to wonder if we know it as well as we think we do. Were there just three of them? Were they in fact kings? Were they actually there at the birth of Christ? What is this story even about and why did Matthew include it?

We are all likely familiar with the story of the "Wise Men" at Christmas. Every year we hear songs like "We Three Kings" and see Nativity displays with finely dressed men bowing at the manger, presenting their gifts to Jesus. We laud these "wise men" for following the star and locating by their wisdom the Savior of the Nations. But what if I told you we got it wrong? What if these "Wise Men" weren't followers of God - but rather enemies of His people? What would that mean for Christmas...and for Christians? In this sermon, Pastor Kevin walks through the classic Matthew 2 text on the "Wise Men" and shows us why we ought to be open to worldly wisdom, be wary of worldly wisdom, and see to whom it all points.
Today is Epiphany—the event described by the carol “We Three Kings of Orient Are.” It’s the time when Gentile wisemen visited the child Jesus. Yet they weren’t kings, they weren’t from the Far East (as Orient formerly meant), and it’s unlikely there were three of them. There were, however, three gifts, and the carol considers each. When the magi arrived in Bethlehem, “They opened their treasures and presented [Jesus] with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh” (Matthew 2:11). The gifts symbolize Jesus’ mission. Gold represents His role as King. Frankincense, mixed with the incense burned in the sanctuary, speaks of His deity. Myrrh, used to embalm dead bodies, gives us pause. The fourth verse of the carol says, “Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume / breathes a life of gathering gloom; / sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, / sealed in the stone-cold tomb.” We wouldn’t write such a scene into the story, but God did. Jesus’ death is central to our salvation. Herod even attempted to kill Jesus while He was yet a child (v. 13). The carol’s last verse weaves the three themes together: “Glorious now behold him arise; / King and God and sacrifice.” This completes the story of Christmas, inspiring our response: “Alleluia, Alleluia, / sounds through the earth and skies.”

As a powerful person of integrity, I need to be inwardly clear, And commit to serving and give my best, To all I hold near and dear. ☉
Though the title leads us to an inaccurate understanding of the Magi, the carol "We Three Kings", gives us an opportunity to discover deeper prophetic meaning of the gifts the Magi bring to young Jesus and his family. There is much that we don't know about the Magi and their famous trip to Palestine to visit Mary & Joseph, but what we do have from the stories in Matthew's gospel reveal a God that was both at once thrilled and at work in the world.
You're not likely to hear a more creative interpretation of the old carol “We Three Kings” than this one by the Williams Brothers.
How do we think about Christmas this year? What does it mean to celebrate the ‘Prince of Peace' when the realities of war and genocide continue without ceasing? What use is the Christmas story when church bells are drowned out by bombs? If our Christian spirituality doesn't engage deeply with the darkness, what right has it to proclaim the coming of light? We've created an audio experience to help locate our hearts with those who suffer this Christmas. A mix of poetry, music and reflections to remind us that the heart of the Incarnation story is a God who does not shy away from the darkness, but comes to dwell in it. We encourage you to take 30 minutes on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day to experience this liturgy and to consider sharing it with others, in the belief that Christmas is not a distraction from the horrors of the world; it's an invitation to confront them directly and show up in solidarity however we can. Barry entered We Three Kings by Patti Smith into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music with a comparison to Blue by R.E.M. (which features Patti Smith!). And we're back like a vertebrae! Two worlds collide and we present “Welcome To Everyone: We Three Kings”. The Not For Everyone and Welcome To Horror podcasts have teamed up again for what the cool kids are definitely still calling the most ambitious crossover event in history. It's Christmas; so we bring you “We Three Kings”- where we each choose our top 3 Stephen King adaptations. Between double-thinking each other's lists and a few participants wilfully ignoring the assignment, this is a truly eclectic selection of the King on screen. A Christmas present from the people who brought you the unique podcast idea of squabbling man children talking about films. Enjoy.

The music! The makeup! The MAESTRO! We're diving into Bradley Cooper's Leonard Bernstein biopic, the result of his post-A STAR IS BORN Blank Check, and we're getting personal, emotional, and pretty ridiculous. Who does Griffin's Bernstein impression sound like (because it certainly doesn't sound like Bernstein)? What is Ben's familial connection to the Maestro? Will Marie ever forgive Griffin for inviting Bobby Wagner on a date to visit Bradley Cooper's Philly cheesesteak truck instead of her? Will David ever forgive Griffin for comparing the Maestro to Will Smith? Do you ever wonder where authors get their ideas? Today I share the story behind the story for my novella Beauty Bright in the We Three Kings collection that releases in September 2023. It's a story that's near to my heart because it's set in the days after WWII in Germany and involves the Monuments Men. It also ties to my contemporary series that launches in April 2024. I loved writing in this collection and returning to my WWII roots. I hope you enjoy seeing and hearing some of my passion for the story and the research that goes into writing a book like this. Have you read a book set in the days immediately after the war? One set in the race to return the art to those who had lost it? I'd love to know if topics and settings like this intrigue you because I'm always thinking about what I'm writing next.

Have you ever wondered what it's like to write in a novella collection when the authors intentionally connect the stories closely? That's exactly what Crystal Caudill, Angela Strong, and I did for our collection We Three Kings which releases in September 2023. In this episode of Book Talk, we talk about how we got the ideas for our novellas, how they are connected, and what we incorporated into the stories. It was a real joy to write with Crystal and Angela, and you'll enjoy meeting them and learning more about their books. Of course, we also talk about writing too. Since we all right different genres and time periods, it's fun to compare notes on how we do what we do. I hope you enjoy this edition of Book Talk! Barry and Abigail discuss Flight of the Cosmic Hippo by Béla Fleck and the Flecktones and sample The Brangus, Bull Ring, Sour Patch Kegs - Watermelon Sour, and Brambles BlackBerry Hazy IPA from Daft Cow Brewery in Alachua, Florida. Barry first heard Flight of the Cosmic Hippo on an episode in the third season of Northern Exposure called Jules et Joel. Barry stunned Abigail with the information that Steve Martin is a GRAMMY-winning banjo player for his album The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo. He has two albums with Edie Brickell, Love Has Come for You and So Familiar. Abigail heard We Three Kings in Star of the County Down. Béla Fleck and the Flecktones have a Christmas album called Jingle All the Way, but, unfortunately, We Three Kings does not appear on it. Many thanks to Scott Brown, owner and brewer (and professional glass-washer!) of Daft Cow Brewery, for sitting down with us to chat about the history of the brewery and the San Felasco Tech City where it resides. I don’t often talk about my own high-school years on this podcast, but I remember in high-school jazz band playing a Christmas medley called “Heaven and Nature Swing.” It led with a “Caravan”-inspired arrangement of “We Three Kings”--if you don’t know “Caravan,” hit YouTube post-haste–and when I hear the hymn, these thirty years later, I always feel cheated when it doesn’t break out into snake-charmer saxophone runs at the ends of the rhyming lines. Today we’re not talking about jazz, but we are talking about what we think we should see and we should hear when we take on stories and characters that we think we know. Eric Vanden Eykel’s recent book The Magi: Who They Were, How They’ve Been Remembered, and Why They Still Fascinate treats the Magi (and my pronunciation of that word is going to move around as we talk–blame seminary Greek and T.S. Eliot) as a kind of jazz standard–we do well to study the first recording, and we also learn some really cool things when we take on later arrangements and reimiginings and even deconstructions of these mysterious figures from Matthew. Christian Humanist Profiles is glad to welcome Dr. Vanden Eykel to the show.
